Which is the greatest football derby in the world?

As we count down to Everton versus Liverpool, which do you think is the biggest derby in the world of football?

    Everton v Liverpool?
    Man City v Man Utd?
    Celtic v Rangers?
    Arsenal v Tottenham?
    AC Milan v Inter Milan?

    Perhaps none of the above?

They definitely have huge rivalries. But derbies are matches fought between two clubs in the same/nearby area.

Real-Atletico and Barca-Espanyol are derbies and have their own bitter rivalry.

The final of the Copa Libertadores is in now in progress in Madrid!

Some background to why this is being played in Madrid

    ================

BOCA JUNIORS HAVE had their bid to be awarded the Copa Libertadores title rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The Copa Libertadores final second leg – which was postponed after Boca’s bus was attacked on the way to the original fixture on November 24 – will finally take place at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu stadium on Sunday.

However, Boca confirmed on Friday that, having had an initial appeal rejected by CONMEBOL, they would take their case to CAS, claiming that they should be awarded the trophy without playing in the rearranged Superclasico against their arch rivals.

But, in a statement issued on Saturday, CAS confirmed that it has denied Boca’s appeal, and the second leg will take place as planned.

“CAS has dismissed the urgent request for provisional measures presented by Boca Juniors, who requested the suspension of the second leg of the final of the Copa Libertadores 2018,” the statement read.

The first leg between the two, which was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch before taking place on November 11, finished 2-2.

Boca president Daniel Angelici had revealed in November that his side were opposed to having to play the second leg following the actions of their rivals.

He said: ”We have decided to submit a request for disqualification to River.

“Today we expand the petition with 46 more pages, with videos, photos and evidence. Now the Disciplinary Tribunal has to answer.

“I hope that the court gives its answer with reasons. We are not willing to play any matches until the court decides. We believe that there are reasons to attend our request.

“If the court decision is negative, we will see if the reasons are strong. If they are not, we will appeal to the Chamber of Appeals of CONMEBOL.

“The rescheduling of the game is a decision of the CONMEBOL Executive Committee, not the Disciplinary Tribunal. We want them to adhere to the law, we believe that within CONMEBOL there are precedents for the request of Boca to be received positively.

“I have the duty and the obligation to defend Boca. It is a very serious fact, it is not about waiting for someone to die to make decisions. River have had many sanctions during this Copa Libertadores. Boca is going to exhaust all administrative instances.”

A derby can be between two teams from same town, city or region. Yes i did choose two countries, that could be defined as region at a push, admittedly I did say it wasn't a derby per se and mentioned it because a football game lead to actual war.

I wonder what Derby County fans consider there derby, Notts Forest, but for them it would be Notts County, Lesta, Coventry?

A derby is not necessarily a match between two teams from the same town, but just the nearest and bitterest local rivals. To qualify, the two teams in question need to have some prospect of ever playing each other on a regular basis (for example, Newcastle United and Gateshead are not considered great local rivals despite being closer together than Newcastle and Sunderland, as the clubs are too many divisions apart).

The most fierce imo is River Plate v Boca Juniors. 70% of Argentinians support one of these teams.

What a game it was last night and congrats to River Plate for taking the trophy thousands of miles back to Argentina.

At present in the EPL it is the North London Derby. If you watched it a couple of weeks ago you would know.

In Europe it has to be El Classico. The Milan derby at the San Siro I feel has sizzled down from what it used to be in the 90s and 2000s.

the milanese clubs never really hated each other like some others do, think lazio roma has always been really firey.

have to agree with @KingKhanWC tho, the river-boca derby is mental, watching a game live would definitely be a bucket list item.

Boca Juniors manager Guillermo Barros Schelotto has left the club, days after their defeat in the Copa Libertadores final by arch-rivals River Plate.

They lost 3-1 in extra time in Sunday's second leg in Madrid to make it 5-3 on aggregate.

The game had been postponed and then relocated after River fans attacked the Boca bus and injured players before their second leg in Buenos Aires.

Former Boca striker Schelotto had been in charge for two and a half years.

They have won the Argentine title for the past two seasons and currently sit sixth.

"Beyond the pain of not having won the cup, I'm going with peace of mind of having given everything," the former Argentina international said.

Club president Daniel Angelici added: "Though the pain and sadness have not yet gone, we understand that the best thing for Boca is a change, to start the year with a new coach."

Feature: Did staging final in Madrid work?
His reign ended with one of the biggest games in South American football history - as Buenos Aires' big rivals met in the continent's version of the Champions League final for the first time.

The first leg - Boca's home game - ended 2-2, but the second meeting was postponed when Boca's bus was attacked by River fans on its way to the stadium. Boca players suffered cuts from broken windows and were also affected by the tear gas used by police to disperse the crowds.

By contrast, River Plate coach Marcelo Gallardo pledged his future to the club earlier this week, having been linked to European clubs.

They play in this month's Fifa Club World Cup as a result of their win.

its really silly, but i used to play football manager, and i once managed river plate cos i wanted to try a different league, ever since then ive had a slight soft spot for river plate. remeber winning the league with a young gun named higuan my top scorer, lol.

having said that bocas stadium is amazing, simply for being so awkwardly shaped, i hear the sound, the resonance, the shaking is unbelievable, hence if i was to watch it live would don a boca jersey and watch it at the bombanera.

We've all been there with foriegn teams on FM. lol. It's a shame both teams have to sell on their stars to European teams. Imagine if both Boca and RP were rich, they would be up there with the likes of Real and Barca imo.

I am also going for Boca as my all time fav player Maradonna played for them.

true, i think the concentration of origin of footballing talent in beunos aires is pbly one of the highest in the world, right up there with paris.

actually that gives me an idea, i have a few free hours over the holidays, might try to see which city has the most world cup winners, cos google couldn't get me a definitive answer.

Hmmm not sure but I'd guess its prob Rio in Brazil. I know Zico and a couple of other world cup winners were born there.

City vs United is just a foot derby. Not formed by any political or economic rivalry.

United vs Liverpool started as an economic and political rivalry, since the two cities were competing economically as being one of the major northern ports.

The Arsenal v Spurs derby, is again a footballing derby, though I am not sure how it has gained so much rivalry.

But, the biggest one IMHO has to be Millwall v West Ham. They both started competing economically (literally for the same customers) and developed as they grew. They are also situated next to each other. I have never been to one of these derbies, but have heard that it is the most tense and volatile match.
