He has been doing this ever since the second innings of the First Test in England. It was worse at Christchurch.
He has checked out mentally from international cricket.
Misbah is probably capable of averaging a Hafeez-like 15-20, but he has lost the mental toughness to dig in, which is why he is averaging 7.60 in this series.
It's why the idea of "going out with dignity at Sydney" was never going to happen.

If Misbah announces his retirement now, he can retain some dignity and respect.
But if he doesn't, he looks like a desperate African dictator, whose whole life is built upon clinging to the trappings of power, and who will cling on by his fingertips to the end.
Tonight is a real crossroads. Misbah can exit with dignity or he can become the Robert Mugabe of Cricket.

I think, that stage is over. We can sugar coat his departure, but truth is, apart of PAK, any other Test country, he would have been sacked after SCG Test. Therefore, retiring after SCG doesn't mean anything to me - his last chance was MCG - just like Kim Hughes, 32 years back, almost same day.

If he announces it now even a defeat will be bathed in a sentimental warm glow.
But if the match ends without an announcement first, it just looks like Misbah was trying to hang on and perform enough to extend his reign.
Basically, every day of this match that passes without an announcement just makes Misbah look selfish and desperate to go on and on.

Exactly.
Any team with a modicum of ambition or self-respect would sack Misbah at the end of this match if he doesn't get his retirement in first.
It's not just about averaging 7.60 with the bat.
It's also about spectacularly weird and whacky field placements, terrible selections and utter misuse of the bowlers that he has got.
I've been watching Test cricket from Australia for decades. I've seen some pretty poor captaincy.
But Misbah's captaincy this year is the worst in Australia in my lifetime. By a very wide margin.

Sad to see Misbah not finishing on high, but it does not matter as he has had a great career and I salute him for that. Misbah will retire after this game before anybody says anything to him as he understands that it is time. His captaincy has been bad this series, but this can happen to any captain in Australia. Our bowlers have performed horribly in this series, so all the blame should not go to Misbah. Let's celebrate his career and send him off with all the respect he deserves!

Congratulations to FTB. Predicted even before the series started that he'll fail in all matches except the last one, just like what happened in England. Feel free to go through my old posts.
Hopefully he gets to his selfish milestone that he has always wanted in this match - so we're out the way and done with and he leaves for forever. Needs 107 more runs.
When others quit I keep going.

So you guys think, with Misbah's possible retirement, should Younis also retire on a high or continue to guide the team, as losing 2 seniors would be disastrous?

Younis now has centuries in all 11 countries. He is the first batsman to do so. Rahul Dravid also achieved this in all countries, apart from the UAE.
