    Australia v Pakistan | 1st ODI | Brisbane | 13 Jan, 2017 | Pre-Match Thread

Pakistan ODI squad: Azhar Ali(c), Sharjeel Khan, Babar Azam, Shoaib Malik, Asad Shafiq, Umar Akmal, Mohammad Rizwan, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Amir, Wahab Riaz, Hasan Ali, Rahat Ali, Mohammad Irfan, Sarfraz Ahmed, Mohammad Hafeez

    1. Azhar
    2. Sharjeel
    3. Babar
    4. Malik
    5. Umer Akmal
    6. Sarfaraz/Rizwan
    7. Imad/Hafeez
    8. Wahab
    9. Amir
    10. Irfan
    11. Nawaz

Would love to see Rizwan get a chance, think he is decent (your opinion?), also would want Hafeez to finish the innings, but Imad has been brilliant...

What do you guys think? Which 11 players would you pick to start?

    Choudhry sahib!
    Assalamoalaikum. Welcome to PP family.

    For 1st two Odi's

    1. Azhar
    2. Sharjeel
    3. Babar
    4. Malik
    5. Umar
    6. Hafeez
    7. Sarfraz/Imad
    8. Imad/Sarfraz
    9. Amir/Wahab (Depends on Amir's Injury)
    10. Hasan
    11. Irfan

Sarfraz could be floated up the order in case Australia make the mistake (unlikely) of playing more than 1 spinner.

    8. Hasan Ali
    9. Wahab Riaz
    10. Rahat Ali
    11. Mohammed Irfan

    - 6 bowling options, 7 if you include Azhar Ali and you've got 4 different pacers in the team. Batting has good enough depth with Imad down at 7. Would rest Babar (looked extremely flustered in Sydney and seemed disappointed in himself after 4th innings performance, sometimes its good to have a rest and think about your game). Also have Rahat because he bowled pretty well in the World Cup. I think you need wickets in this format, especially against Australia because you won't contain em.

    Thanks for welcome!

    Agree with Sarfaraz moving up
that is one problem i saw with the team i suggested, Imad & Sarfaraz are down the order, but we are capable of giving them enough time 😅 collapse!

6 bowlers for sure! (Not counting Azhar)
I felt we were sort of a bowler in tests, needed to play another bowler or all-rounder there too.. but that's done now.
Babar's selection in the 11 is a debate, have a feeling if not Babar they will include Asad..

Yes, irrespective of his test match performance Babar after scoring three ODI tons recently has to be our main batsman in ODIs.

Akmal has to bat in the top 4. Sarfraz isn't good enough to bat in the top 4. And not a good enough hitter to bat below 5. Has to bat at 5.

Hafeez(would've tried Rizwan but Hafeez gives us bowling depth)
    Imad

People forgetting the brainlessness and ugly slogging of Umar Akmal . He should only play in T20s. I will play even Nawaz ahead of him. Atleast he plays some proper shots , is lefty and can bowl too.

This should be the team for the first ODI.

    1 Sharjeel.
    2 Azhar.
    3 Babar.
    4 Malik.
    5 Sarfaraz.

    11. Hasan Ali

I think this should be the team from the options provided. If Hafeez is going to be included as a sixth bowling option, it has to be at #6. Not a spot higher.

I don't like the idea of using Irfan. I'd rather keep Hasan Ali as a right-arm fast bowling option.

Will this XI win? I doubt it, but it's the best of a sorry bunch IMO.

After the devastating Test series we had, would still want Babar to play to prove himself yet again.

To make a mark in the ODI series, we need to step up our game. Team Pakistan needs to think positive and act positive, the approach to game should be modern.

The defensive mind set has cost us a lot till date, it's good to hold your crease but it ain't any good if runs aren't flowing smooth.

    Players to Watch Out for:

Azhar Ali : Very high on confidence would be looking forward to exploit the conditions further, hoping for some good starts in pairing to Sharjeel.

Hasan Ali: High Arm action zips the ball through at pace, he need to trouble the Aussies to cement his place.

    Mohammad Hafeez
: A comeback should be as sweet as it could be!

I think it is time the so called fan boys of individuals step it up and stop saying that a tough Aussie tour is not supposed to be judgmental on all the young players in the squad. This is Cricket, a players need to perform for his team anywhere around the globe.

Looking forward to Sharjeel quick runs at the top and Sarfaraz finsihing it off well.

Amir Amir Amir, the hype was huge but unfortunately hasn't lived up to it. This tour nothing has been good from him other than the pictures with his family. He need to hit back hard!

    Sharjeel
    Azhar
    Babar
    Hafeez
    Malik
    Sarfraz
    Imad
    nawaz
    Amir
    Wahab

Three fast bowlers , three spinners and azhar. I would be happier if we had amir yamin /faheem ashraf or hammad azam in place of nawaz.

Hasan Ali was arguably the best Pakistani fast bowler in the last couple of LOI series'

When you consider his inexperience, youth and untapped potential, he's the first pacer selected for me. Add Amir and Wahab, and Junaid starts the series on the bench most likely

lmao did you really check Irfan's fielding efforts? The guy was literally stopping every ball with his feet. Good luck doing that at international level. I'm not convinced with his fitness level. Inzi obviously only watched the final.

malik is as good a bowler as hafeez and a much more gritty batsmen, even when he isnt in the best of form. Junaid and Amir are key here. Aussies is very much top heavy team and if they bowl well in tandem, expect a lose shot from warner, etc. It will be interesting to see if we have learned anything from our Test slaughtering or if we bowl the same full pitched off stump line to warner. Smith is the real danger man; the man posesses no real weakness and has a solid temperament for all formats.

If team management select this team & as per this batting order. This team cN beat any side in the world. It has free flowing aggressive player like Sharjeel & Umar. Azhar can provide the much needed stability at the top. Hafeez can hot big one in the end. While malik & safu can milk the spinners. Team has 4 front line bowler plus 1 genuine all-rounder . Plus batting all-rounder Malik who can bowl .

Umar at 4 is doubtful , in fact say it as team Pakistans miss fortune that we don't have dedicated batting numbers for the batsmen.

Babar Azam again hit a 98 which is good news, Sharjeel & Akmal did well for their 50's, good 49 by Malik👌

    5. Umar
    6. Hafeez

    10. Hasan
    11. Irfan

Sarfraz could be floated up the order in case Australia make the mistake (unlikely) of playing more than 1 spinner.

Kamran in for Sarfraz and Junaid in for Irfan for 1st two or 3 Odi's

I am not sure where Kamran should Bat. Ideally it should be number 3 but Babar has 3 centuries at number 3. If Kamran opens than where does Azhar go ?

If Azhar slots in at 3 than Umar is useless at number 6. He has failed as finisher in 97 % of games irrespective of Average and Strike Rate.

Sharjeel should not be benched. He stroked 62 of 39 vs CA eleven and he is the only batsman capable of scoring at a quick rate.

Don't play Umar at 6 rather bench him.

Kamran is in rich form. He will be wasted down the order. He has very poor record at number 7. He needs to bat during 1st or 2nd batting power play. Kamran should not be benched. He should be given atleast 3 Odi's.

Australian Team Analyst has not gone in hibernation.

    Last 1 year. 10 Odi's average of 15.

Atleast TTF has heap of runs at his back. Last 2 Fc sessons average of 65 plus with 7 plus Fc tons. Last 4 List A seasons average of 45 plus with 6 plus List A tons. So better take advantage of TTF's current form than to give a chance to someone who has been failing continuously in last 1 year.

Also 34 years old is given a final go to perform and stay or be lost for ever (internationally) never to return again. He isn't picked to be benched. Incase he is benched or not given atleast 3 matches than either Mickey will go or Inzamam will go because there is considerable friction.

How many times will that 34 Years Old be lost once and for all? It's a cycle with him, Always comes back.
Yes I know they are not in hibernation but then again what is the point for selecting Rizwan when he isn't even the first choice backup wicket keeper? And to be honest, Kamran give me three chances only has failed forever.

Who would you replace him with?
I would've loved it if Rizwan got some real chance to play, been on the bench for too long,
BUT Kamran Akmal has been in great form in 'our domestic'
As much as it kills me to say it, he deserves a call up.

Looks like the squad in warm-up will be similar to playing XI.
    Khan
    Azhar*
    Azam
    Malik
    Akmal
    Rizwan+
    Wasim
    Riaz
    Hasan
    Rahat
    Khan

Looks like Hafeez won't play as he wasn't in warm-up and Akmal scored a 50. Rest Amir for 1st game. Just like they rested Hazlewood.

They played a very easy team for us in warmup, all young unknown players, we on the other hand always play our 2nd team in warmups. Hope our players don't get the overconfidence (after those test match performances they shouldn't)

Yeah hopefully Nawaz won't be playing. Hafeez should've played warm-up instead of Azhar or Sharjeel.

    Another batsmen - Hafeez?
Another batsman or w-keeper - Rizwan?
    Imad
    Hasan
    Aamir
    Wahab

Top 4 and bottom 4 should be a lock IMO. Whomever we choose to w-keep will determine our line-up. Can Akmal keep all game? Should Rizwan play and take over w-keeping if Akmal stinks it up? Sort of like w-keeping insurance. In any case, I believe we should have 7 recognizable batters before our number 8.

As for our bowling, I believe our 5th bowler should be shared between Azhar and Malik (I have a feeling I missed something with Malik being suspended from bowling? - hope I'm wrong).

There will be one guaranteed change and that is Amir in for either Rahat or Junaid.

Funny how everyone always proposes xyz changes and posts up their XIs. You guys should know by now that the Pak think tank has an unorthodox way of thinking in the sense that they a) Do not learn from past mistakes b) Hate to experiment.

Most fans on here know that Rizwan is useless at anything after #5 and that Azhar does not merit a place in this team, let alone be the captain of it. Etc etc etc

    PP 'experts' > Pak management

I am not surprised Inzamam decision to send Hafeez and Kamran if he does get selected. Like i said there will never be someone like Imran Khan will come and select players with talent, hunger, and passion.

Inzamam decisions of selection is simple, he copy paste the team selected in the last series and gives it to media to release it.

Some decisions of even management is shocking.

Selection of Imad and Nawaz botb are similar type of cricketer. Yet no thought that lets select a good leg spinner or off spinner for a change. We suffered in Test series because of no good off spinner in the team.

No Allrounder in the team. Amer yamin, amad butt no chances given to them. Failure like Hafeez selected despite not having played for last 3 months or so.

No young fast bowler selected, same junaid, irfan, rahat why he is in the squad...😒

We are not looking ahead, which is why we are struggling to find good players, no rotation policy being applied. Aussies lost 1 series they changed the whole team.

But 1 thing i am happy is Umar and Babar in the team, both can give pakistan a chance to put decent total, if they bat sensibly.

    My Team.

    Sharjeel
    RizWan
    Azhar
    Babar
    Umar
    Hafeez
    Malik
    Imad
    Amir
    Junaid
    Asghar
