British police make fresh arrest in fixing probe [update#58]

Pakistan left-handed opener Nasir Jamshed was arrested on Tuesday by Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) alongside a bookie named Yousuf, Express News reported.

Jamshed, who is accused of referring Islamabad duo Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif to Yousuf, has been provisionally suspended from all forms of cricket on Monday by the Pakistan Cricket Board.

According to the representative of the NCA, Jamshed and Yousuf have been released on bail and asked to report to the agency in April.

“Two men in their thirties have been arrested by NCA officers in connection with bribery offences as part of an ongoing investigation into international cricket match spot-fixing,” read a press release on the NCA website.

“The men were arrested on Monday 13 February and have been released on bail until April 2017 pending further enquiries. As part of the on-going investigation we are working closely with the Pakistan Cricket Board and International Cricket Council’s anti-corruption units. The Pakistan Cricket Board has launched its own investigation which has resulted in the suspension of three players,” the statement further read.

    https://tribune.com.pk/story/1326798...bookie-fixing/

    Shahryar Khan speaking on TV:

"I have heard that Nasir Jamshed has been arrested though I haven't got confirmation."

"The PCB haven't done this but fixing is a criminal offence in England so they've been arrested, the same way that the trio was arrested in 2010."

"We have already suspended Jamshed and once we have evidence, we will take further action."

"Jamshed is from Pakistan but he lives in London, and I think Yousaf saab also lives there."

"Since they've done a crime according to the British law, they've been arrested. In Pakistan, we don't have these laws. The British police have done an investigation."

Prison rations are quite slim so Nasir won't need to worry about weight issues much longer.

Absolutely disgusted and repulsed by these people. Their greed, shamelessness and arrogance to think they'd get away with it knows no bounds.

Three pakistani left handed openers and three fixers.

In 2010 mazhar majeed named the names of four other players apart from the main culprits but apparently there was no evidence to suggest that those four guys were involved as well.

We usually get away with everything in pakistan , take an example of the prime minister of pakistan. The court has ordered them to shut down their sugar mills but they are saying " now they are working , keep them working".

If i recall correctly, the wrist technique to determine ages came into affect after Jamshed had moved one from under 19 cricket, he is from the same class as the likes of Sarfraz, Rohit Sharma and anwar ali, all of whom are around 29 getting on to 30.

So no surprise if Jamshed is around there

If they've not committed any offences in the UK and/or whilst the're in the UK, and/or against UK based businesses such as legal bookies, and/or against UK citizens (living in the UK or abroad), then it might be difficult to prosecute them in the UK courts. There could of course be an international arrest warrant issued by Pakistan or the UAE authorities.

Jamshed always looked like a far more talented left hand bat than even Sharjeel, in fact he looked a world beater when he came onto the scene with those centuries in India. His long term loss of form always seemed inexplicable - who knows, maybe it was genuine. But now there'll always be the thought in the back of your mind that he sold out a long time ago.

I know, I remember watching him play, and the commentator said he was 24 and both me and my dad were shocked.

He looked good at one stage but his career fell apart quite quickly unfortunately.

Surely Jamshed must be one of Pakistan's most disgraceful cricketers.

Had a shocking run of form after a promising start, turned up in the 2015 WC as an obese, joke of a cricketer getting out to short balls by UAE 130k bowlers, couldn't field and now he's involved in this. Was suspected a couple years back as well.

I agree PCB for all their faults have been trying hard recently, whether it is to bring back cricket to Pakistan or propel Pak cricket despite funds drying up as they are not playing India.

But everything that can go wrong is going wrong. Lahore blasts and now PSL spot-fixing.

There is no law against match fixing per se , in the UK - well to the best of my knowledge.

The law the trio were prosecuted under was seeking to defraud bookmakers or members of the public. Difficult to prove unless there is actual evidence the fix was on.

I don't think Jamshed has been arrested. His wife tweeted that they were heading away for Umrah a couple of days ago.
Guna ker ke Umrah pe chalay jao - logic of many Muslims these days!

Jamshed should be imprisoned and slapped for the rest of his life. Made us lose one of our best players and both our T20 openers - what an absolute disgrace of a human, if he still deserves to be called that.

I wouldn't be surprised if his passport has been taken off him by the UK authorities.

I really do hope that is indeed the case.

I'm not one to judge, but I really do think that after doing something like this he doesn't deserve to go for Umrah. Allah forgive me if I've said something wrong.

Now I'm suspect about his WC15 campaign.

Nasir was a walking wicket during that tournament and now I feel like something else might have influenced his bad performances

    What a waste of space
don't think so. as deplorable and humiliating as this whole current situation is, he at least didn't commit these crimes whilst representing his country like the trio. they are certainly far more disgraceful, yet you saw the open arms warmth which which they were welcomed back, including by hypocrites on this thread.

British police make fresh arrest in fixing probe

British police announced Thursday a third suspect had been arrested in connection with their investigation into international cricket spot-fixing.

A statement issued by the National Crime Agency said officers had arrested a British man in his thirties this morning in the Sheffield area (in northern England) as as part of its investigation into the spot-fixing of cricket matches.

He was later bailed pending further inquiries.

Two men, also in their 30s, were arrested by NCA officers on February 13 and were bailed until April.

Earlier this month, amid a corruption probe involving players in the Pakistan Super League, the NCA said they were "working closely" with the Pakistan Cricket Board and International Cricket Council´s anti-corruption units.

Saturday saw Pakistani cricket officials charge Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif for spot-fixing in a corruption probe that threatens to undermine the PSL.

The pair, suspended after being accused of meeting a suspicious person linked to an international betting syndicate, could face up to a life ban from international and domestic cricket under Pakistan Cricket Board corruption rules.

Another former player Nasir Jamshed was also provisionally suspended over allegedly influencing the two players. Jamshed was reportedly arrested in London last week but was granted bail until April.

Both Sharjeel and Latif have denied any involvement in the alleged corruption.

The PSL, a five-team tournament, is largely being played in the UAE because of security concerns although Lahore is the scheduled venue for next month's final.
