Dalit Man Beaten To Death By Cops For Throwing Color On Upper Caste Man In Jharkhand: Report

The widow of a Dalit man has alleged that her husband was beaten to death by police personnel in the Koderma district of Jharkhand after he threw colored powder on an upper caste man during Holi celebrations, The Hindustan Times reported on Thursday.

Holi was celebrated on 13 March in many parts of the country.

According to the HT report, Pradeep Choudhary, 52, and a couple of other villagers sprinkled color on a local chowkidar Rajendra Yadav, who got upset at the gesture and called the police to teach them a lesson. "The police started beating up Pradeep till he fell unconscious. They then took him to the police station," Jashwa Devi, Pradeep's widow, told the newspaper.

Jashwa said that her husband's body had many bruises when the police dropped him home, the next morning. She also claimed that instead of helping them, cops at the Satbarwa police station abused them over caste.

Prabhat Khabar reported that the cops took Pradeep to the hospital after they beat him in his village, but after he revived, they took him to the police station where he was thrashed again.

Pradeep succumbed to his injuries at the Koderma Sadar hospital.

Dainik Bhaskar reported that Pradeep, a herder, was the father of six children. He was beaten so severely that his body turned had turned a shade darker from the bruises, DB reported.

This alleged crime in Koderma district is not an isolated instance of violence against Dalits on Holi. In Patheri village in Ambala, Dalits alleged that they were attacked with sharp-edged weapons by upper caste men during Holi celebrations. Two of the ten injured men were reportedly in a critical condition. In Boh village in Ambala, a Dalit man was allegedly thrashed by upper caste men because he was giving sermons on Holi.

In 2015, a Dalit man in Sonbhadra district was tonsured and paraded through a village on suspicion of having burnt a "holika" pyre.

And Hindus wonder why Dalits are converting to Christianity and Islam.

The Upper Caste never considered Dalits as Caste Hindus and the rift is too deep.

The Dalit man threw color on a Gentleman by the name Yadav. Aren't Yadav's considered as Backward Caste? Then how come it is considered Upper Caste atrocity? It is more like Backward Caste atrocity over Dalits. Typical BC and Dalit riots. Common in South India too.

PS - A Dalit by the name Choudhary? Does not sound like a Dalit name. Something does not sound right. Can anyone living in that part of India throw some light on this?

I have no idea why there are still Dalit Hindus in this world. All Dalit Hindus should have left Hinduism long time ago. Dont waste your life Dalits. You get life only once and it is not worth spending it in a religion which so much discriminates against you.

Dalit Hindus have been following Hinduism for many centuries. Many have their own deities especially the Tribal ones. Its not easy to leave the existing religion or beliefs.

Dalits these days are mostly converting to Buddhism and Church has also done a wonderful job in converting thousands to Christianity. Some converted to Islam.

The problem is there is discrimination in Islam and Christianity too. In many areas, Dalits are not allowed in Churches. So Dalits have their own Churches in some areas. Muslims also have a problem with Dalit Muslims. The Ashraf vs Ajlaf.

Then there is the issue of whether a Dalit will get reservation if he/she converts to Islam or Christianity. There is no Caste system there. So they remain a Hindu to avail the reservations and freebies that Govt showers on them.

In a massive country like India a few such incidents will happen. Th entire Indian society can't be blamed for that.

That is what exactly happened in states like Kerala. These days you find the Sangh & Associates propagating all sorts of Doomsday articles regarding the dwindling number of Hindus in Kerala (Kerala has 52% Hindus, 26% Christians & Rest Muslims the lowest majority hindu state after the North East ). But they still donot acknowledge that a major portion of the Christian converts and many muslims were lower caste and Dalit hindus, who had exposure to Cristian missions and Islamic preachers from Arabia centuries before the rest of India did !

If you were not allowed basic human rights like education, wages, decent accomodation, right to walk through roads or even the right to worship YOUR OWN gods within the premises (let alone the inside of the Mandir) , and one day you find that just changing your name and worshiping a different god gave you access to all the above as easy as that .. wouldn't you do it too ??

Reminds me of how Mr Ambani sold his Free Data / Free calls JIO sims to the whole of India !

That is one thing that gets me too . For all the talk of Jesus & Allah treating all as the same, the Dalit and lower class converts are made to pray at separate churches in India (especially in South where christianity is very old). See the case of various Christian denominations in Kerala..

The Muslims too though on a lesser extend practice similar segregation. In my state Kerala , where the Richer , Fairer Muslims (said to be descendants of Arab traders marrying locals since late 600 AD) are seen as the Purer muslims coming from "Honourable" families , while the lower caste converts are seen as lesser.

And Dalit christians and muslims get reservation in India as well. Kind of strange since these religions dont have caste ..
