This is a great problem to have.

All that aside, this pitch has those cracks which can bring that bloody monster O Keefe into play. Right now, its docile for most part but in 4th innings, O Keefe may be unplayable.
Totally agree. India must not make the mistake which Rahane made after tea by not bringing Kuldeep on straight away. He went for reputation over form and we leaked 30 odd runs

Hope Kohli doesn't repeat it. OTOH, feel sad for Jayant, looks he won't be playing test cricket for a long long time

Jayant can't spin the ball. But he is a terrific lower order batsman.

I read that Kuldeep can bat too. If Kuldeep can score 30-40 runs every time, he will be a permanent fixture in the team. Even Ashwin,s place will not be safe.

Ashwin barely spin the ball. Tired fingers or simply inability to turn when the pitch is not helpful is remained to be seen.

    Its a moot point

If India didnt play a batsman short, Australia would still be batting.

There is also the novelty factor with Kuldeep that he was a totally new entity.

This isnt the first time and wont be the last time in cricket that team prepared for the big guns and the young rookie caused the damage...

Its laughable at this point to even contemplate Kuldeep threatening Ashwins place in the side

India should have gone with 3 spinners and 1 pacer. That would have allowed us to play Iyer who was in terrific form.

Pace is not our forte. Contribution of Umesh Or BK will be minimum in this Test.

Ashwin/Jaddu/Kuldeep would have been enough to get 20Aus wickets on this pitch.

The spin and dip that Kuldeep was getting was amazing. Ashwin and Jaddu barely spun the ball on this Day-1 pitch.

3 spinners and 1 pacer is out of the question. 2 pacer and 2 spinner sounds most reasonable considering the bounce. Anyways their intention with Kuldeep is to surprise the opposition and they have partially succeeded in that regard. Still I think they let tail score runs too freely toward the end and could have restricted the inning total below 300

Cummins hasn't been any less impressive than Starc.. And he too can bat and add valuable runs.

In fact if Cummins and Pattinson can remain fit, there is a very good chance Stac has to carry drinks (never gonna happen though)

Starc might not be among the best in test but he's nowhere near that bad. Starc would still be an auto choice in any test test bar South Africa maybe.

No one said about him being bad.. if Cummings and Pattinson can remain fit then they all can challenge Starc's spot based on merit

A reeeeeeal slug fest today. First hour will be very dicey for both the team .... more so for the Indians than the Australians. The ball stil very new, only 1 over old, so the openers have their work cut out for them. Australian fast bowlers must be rearing to go at the Indians. I have a feeling that the Indians will knock over the 300 runs, they usually do, if not today then tomorrow for sure. But then, this is Test Match Cricket .... no way to predict what will happen. I am sure Smith is not happy 300 runs, given the start they got. Can't wait !!!

meanwhile Hazelwood has taken Vijay out quite early.

I feel India should have persisted with Ishant Sharma on this Pitch , rather going for BK. Though Ishant was ineffective in Ranchi , but this Pitch is Nothing like that.

This is not a calculated risk. Smith doesn't understand how to use fast bowlers like Clarke did. His overs should've been spaced out into 3-3-3 in the first 30.

The bad thing for india is Australia can afford to give extended spells to their fast bowlers in these conditions of Dharmashala. In other parts of india it wouldnt have been possibile in this time of the year

It seems our Indian friends are having trouble understanding that it's not easy to face well directed genuine fast bowling.

No it seems our brother Chief Destroyer likes to defend the Indian players whom he has a soft corner for while throwing the rest under the bus when they under perform.

The Rahul's shot was inexcusable for the sole reason he was playing short ball so well beforehand.

Rahane taking on short ball right from the onset with us just having 5 bats and the series on the line was an even bigger crime.

It's very easy to get rattled when the ball's traveling at that pace towards your face. Rahul clearly got sucked in. Certainly not an inexcusable shot. I'd suggest going to nets and putting the machine at 85mph and face some short deliveries. You'd understand then.

Cummins is generating serious lift. Some of them you can't duck away and have to take them on. Even if you don't want to, your instincts will naturally take over and you get caught in-between. This is why nothing rivals genuine pace. You're not only in danger of losing your wicket but getting seriously injured.

I don't dispute any of that. Its not easy.

But the same could have happened before too but Rahul weaved away. He played a shot (which was way too high anyways) after Cummins had a word with him and had him on the ropes in the previous over. If he was smart and understood the situation, his survival instincts should have kicked on but on the contrary he became more loose.

So while the reasoning for his dismissal may seem understandable on the surface, it really isn't for his case.

And Rahane could have easily left that ball alone but he smashed it aerially. He again did it for a second time.

We could use the same argument for Kohli's shot in WC SF which indeed was a well directed bouncer but it was a supremely dumb shot which everyone agrees about.

Easier said than done. The viewers have plenty of time to think and judge. They're relying on pure instinct and muscle memory. Both are good players of the short ball and if they in that moment read that certain delivery to be pull-able, they will rely on their instinct. They don't have time to think and judge especially for a player who's just come on to the crease. It's a lot simpler for players like Pujara who's ducking every ball and willing to take shots at his body but even he's been caught jumping around simply because of how well directed and lively the pace is.

The bowlers are already exhausted from the previous test match and Pujara is piling on the agony.

In his last 3 innings Pujara has played 221, 525 and 145* deliveries, nearly 150 overs, single-handedly tiring the Australian bowling attack. They must be sick of seeing him at the crease, just like we are of Smith...lol

20 overs till the new ball. Smith should rotate the three spinners at his disposal (remember Maxwell?), asking them to keep things extremely tight and fighting for every run. Then by the 80th over, if the spinners didn't pick up a couple of wickets or are spent, throw the ball to Cummins and Hazlewood. That new ball is extremely crucial for Australia.

India need to ensure they don't lose another wicket today. Respect the spinners, see out the pacers and get to the close with 220 on the board and a job well done. Tomorrow they can play a lot more freely, after seeing off the initial burst from the pacers, seeing how they will be in a much safer position.

India would want a 150 runs lead, Australia won't like anything above 50.

RR should be the least of our concerns. There is enough time for either side to force a result. Having lost a crucial toss, our only chance is a 100 run lead, the time it takes is not important.

Yes I get what you are really trying to convey. Even I separate dismissals based on poor shot vs poor execution.

However its no coincidence that Rahul's shot came after Cummins had a word with him.

Can it be justified? Sure. There are so many ways to do that.

Was he in the fault? He was if we really consider everything.

It was a poor shot because he had all the warnings but still chose not to pay heed to it which is why India is in a precarious position now.

A couple of wickets can change the game now.
