IPL 2017 - Indian Talent & Performance Watch

This thread is for Indians members as well as other interested PPers to discuss which new or established Indian talent is lightning up this year IPL.

Overseas players performances won’t be mentioned specifically as the focus is to identify new Indian talents and mark as a potential international player for India in upcoming years.

    So, lets get going.

First week of IPL has been completed and we have 9 matches so far and here are the local talent that has impressed so far:

1 ) Rishab Pant: The 19 year wonder kid has lit up the IPL with his first two innings of 57 (36) and 31(22). Pant has already made it mark in the last domestic season including a run a ball triple century and a 48 ball 100. The kid is destined to greatness and a replacement for Dhoni in ODI and T20 is already there.

    2) Sanju Samson: Another bright young talent. The first century of IPL 2017 belongs to him as he smashed 102(63). After a mediocre domestic season, Sanju has roared back to form. A decent wicketkeeper, solid technique and a cool head makes him as next Indian batting mainstay.

    3) The Pandya Brothers: The brothers are impact players. Hardik has innings like 35(15) and 29(11) with around 8 sixes already and Krunal has done his bit with a performance like 3/24 (4). Both can hit big, bowl decent and are excellent fielders & both are in early twenties. Ideal packages for T20 and ODI cricket.

    4) Nitish Rana: Another23 year old exciting talent. A hard hitting modern batsman impressed this year with inning of 34(28) and 50(29). He look fluent, has good range of strokes and looks ideal to bat at No. 5 for India in future.

    5) S Nadeem: The domestic stalwart has figures like 1/13(4) and 1/23(4) in first two matches. Nadeem is the best left arm spinner in the country after Jadeja with two back to back consistent domestic season. May not get a chance to showcase his talent on international stage due to concurrent career with Jadeja.

    6) Y Chahal: After an impressive T20 debut against England, Young Chahal is going from strength to strength. Two matches and good figures of 1/22(4) and 1/19(4). Looks more confident and already the best bowler of his team.

    7) Sandeep Sharma: The best swing bowler after Bhuvenshwar Kumar in India. He is young and bound to get fitter and stronger. Good performances of 2/33(4) and 1/26(4) with an exception opening spell of 1/7(3) in powerplay.

    8) Axar Patel: He rebranded himself as ‘proper’ allrounder in this IPL with batting at no 4 and opening the bowling. With performances like 1/27(4) and 1/12(4) and cameo like 24(22), he is making right moves. Still young, he can be a useful in T20s atleast.

    9) Dinesh Karthik: DK is back with bang. With a bumper LIST A domestic season where he was super consistent with massive scores, he started IPL with good innings like 47(25) and 30(32) and generally looked solid and free flowing with bat. Is Champion trophy spot beckoning?

    10) Kedar Jadhav: Though already established in India ODI setup, this is the first IPL after breakthrough performances vs England and he didn’t let down with innings like 31(16) and 69(37). A solid two year career awaits Jadhav till World cup 2019 atleast.

    11) Kuldeep Yadav: The chinaman is an all format bowler and proved it with 2/25(4) spell in the first match. He is an exciting prospect for India after the splendid performance in his debut test.

The other notable performances in first week ( Indian current stars/past stars):

    a) Yuvi enthralled with a blistering knock 62(49)
    b) Bhuvi was reliable and immaculately accurate 2/27(4), 2/21(4)
    c) Rahane customary special IPL inning 60(34)
    d) Raina consistency in IPL is amazing 68(51)
    e) Gambhir still has got the mojo 76(48)
    f) Manoj Tiwary is a forgettable man but still keeps going 40(23)
    g) Zaheer ( 2/31, 3/20) & Nehra (1/27) making their experience count
    h) Manish Pandey special 81(47), key player for India in ODI setup
    i) Mishra is Gold in T20 but still behind Chahal in pecking order 3/11(3)
    j) Aaron has an unusual rare good spell 2/21(4)

Whatever little IPL I've watched over the years, the local bowling quality has been extremely poor, especially the pacemen.

The local quality has improved considerably over the years but still few TTF and trundlers remains like Dinda, Kulkarni, Undakat, Parveen kumar etc. who are taking places of new talent....I wish this IPL to be their last so that we can clear the junk.

Sanju Samson scored an impressive ton in the last game. He along with Pant could be an ideal replacement after Dhoni retires.

This list is full of mediocrity. Hardik Pandya and Pant are exciting but the rest should never be near the Indian team. Maybe Kuldeep Yadav is good too but don't really see the use of him when Ashwin and Jadega are there.

Never understand why Aaron isn't picked by India. After years of filth, they get one express bowler but they don't even play him. I happened to come across a few scorecards for this editions IPL and fast bowlers have been taken apart massively. Especially ones who can bowl at good pace. Yet Varun's bowled well.

Jadhav is not going anywhere for next 2 years....the way he smashed England bowlers in previous ODI series to all parts is worth a full ticket price...

DK and Axar are proven TTF. But DK did light up domestic LIST A ( like Kamran Akmal) so maybe deserves one more chance in ODI.

Yes, forgot Jhadav. He's very good.

DK is too old. You already have guys like Dhoni and Yuvi in the squad with Nehra making a possible return. No need for DK. Bring in Pant who's got potential. As for Axar, he simply doesn't have the talent. And plus, who does he replace? There's much better players like Kuldeep.

Strike off whatever you wrote about Samson. He has the brain of an Amoeba. Throws it away all the time. His Century came against useless bowlers of Pune.

    Pant/Rana/Krunal are exciting prospects.

BK/Bumrah proving they are the best LOI pacers in Inida.

We need to get proper hitters ,could watch Rana today hoping to catch him in action next game,Krunal was decent last season but looks like his bowling has regressed.

Rishabh,Krunal,Sarafaraz hopefully we get 2 into our team sad that Hooda has not evolved one bit wanted him to make it to the team.

Between Gambhir and Dhawan - I'll take Gambhir for another shot for now. This are his last years and I think he can still dig in. 2011 w/c win in finals was all him and even in IPL he is outscoring Dhawan and looks more motivated

What is the use of pace without any variations or a yorker to rely on?

Krunal is a pretty decent spinner. Can bowl economically. That is what is needed of your 5th bowler in ODI's.

After Kapil Dev, we struggled to find a good pace bowling allrounder. Irfan Pathan did well for about 4 years before he declined spectecularly.Thereafter we tried mediocre allrounders like Abhishek Nayar, Stuart Binny and Rishi Dhawan and as expected, they all failed and exposed at international level.

Now we have Hardik Pandya and we are genuinely excited about him.He bowls at 140kps, can open the bowling and is quite a handful in helpful conditions. He may be a hack in batting but sometime hacks come useful in limited over cricket (esp T20s). Also, there is no doubt he can hit the ball big ( though can seem ugly). Most importantly he provide balance and flexibility which is gold.

Uthapaha, a TTF for India, has a field day today at IPL: 68(39) with 4 sixes

Manish Pandey, a key player for India in ODI, also played well: 46(35) with 2 sixes

    Bhuvi brilliant again! 3/20(4)

Bhuvneshwar Kumar: Bhuvi is bowling like a man possessed with excellence! The pitches are flat and the powerhitters are blazing but not against Bhuvi. Here are his figures in first 4 matches:

    2/27(4)
    2/21(4)

We can only judge whether he is underrated or overrated by looking at this actual performances. He was India's best bowler in the 1st and 3rd ODIs of the recent India-Eng series.

I do see him as some star player but it was mainly his stats that made me question him a lot. It's good to see he's doing well for India after what happened to Irfan Pathan. I genuinely do think that he's going to be a good lower order hitter, something that Pak needs; hopefully we can get that in Shadab Khan.

The next Indian star bastman S Iyer is back in IPL after missing first week..started with 22(17)....has high hopes from him.

On the contrary, K Nair fails again...

R Pant alsodisappoints today...15(9) , An ugly hack costs his wicket...

Although I am happy that TTF like Mohit, Aaron are mascaraed yet again..

Here is the list of Tried & Tested Failure(TTF) in IPL that teams are carrying off...they are much better giving youngsters chance than waste time & coaching resources on these players. All these players represented India and have failed to impress.

Bowlers & Allrounders ( what a ugly list of mediocrity)
    Manpreet Gony
    Dhawal Kulkarni
    Praveen Kumar
    Munaf Patel
    Varun Aaron
Ishant Sharma (in OdI & T20s)
    Mohit Sharma
    Vinay Kumar
    Ashok Dinda
    Jaydev Unadkat
    Sreenath Arvind
    Karn Sharma
    Rishi Dhawan
    Stuart Binny

    Bastman
Dinesh Karhtik ( Though he has revitalize his career this domestic season and current IPL so hopeful he get one last chance to remove the TTF label from him)
Robin Uthapha (never fulfilled his potential)
Ambati Rayudu ( not a TTF in true sense but at 31 yrs age, he is done)
    Saurabh Tiwary
    Naman Ojha

Yes, Sarfaraz is injured and withdrawn from RCB squad...a chance missed from him but his time will come...he is just 19...

There are young & upcoming pace bowlers that aren't given ample opportunities because of TTF pace bowlers.

    Nathu Singh
    Ishwar Pandey
    Shardul Thakur
    Mohmmad Siraj
    T Natrajan

Hope they get a chance in next few IPL matches.

Please, Dinesh has been given so many chances to make a comeback but he disappoints everytime. Why should he be considered for the CT anyway?

Dhoni will be the keeper for our team and in case he retires sooner, either Pant or Samson must get the chance as a WK.

    Rohit
    Dhawan/Rahul
    Kohli
    Yuvi
    Dhoni
    Jadhav
    Raina/Pandey
    Pandya
    Ash/Jaddu
    Fast Bowler 1
    Fast Bowler 2

There is no place for Dinesh anyway.

28 (25) is a decent ODI knock. You don't need to be striking at 150 in an ODI. Dhoni was never a T20 player but he can still do a good job in 50 overs cricket.

Yes, true. But the fluency is completely missing. Just ugly edges, miscue shots and an occasional hit. Doesn't inspire confidence. But then his experience is gold and Wicket keeping is outstanding. So just hope he clicks as a package in CT.

I hope he doesn't, for obvious reasons, but I can see that Dhoni definitely has some in the tank still. He can't play the moving ball well, however, so it's imperative that India's top four play out the first 20-25 overs in every match.

True. Spinners are doing fine. The stock are healthy there for next 5-6 years. Jadeja, Ashwin, Chahal, Krunal, Kuldeep etc. will carry India for next 5 years easily.

The pace bowling stocks as expected are bare. Not because of lack of talent but for team still relying on TTF in the name of experience.( see my post#48).

Currently we have a set of 5 International bowlers that are doing fine and will continue to spearhead for next 3 years atleast.

    Shami (fitness permitted)
    Yadav ( super fit)
    Bhuvi ( super fit)
    Bumrah (ODI & T20)
    Ishant(Test)

There is an urgent need to give chances to young pace bowlers so that we can get the backups. My next hopes lies on these young shoulders. Get these guys a decent game time.

Really ? that's based on what again ? If you look at the IPL performances till today ? Who's been performing better ? Who's better in fielding and showing some commitment ? Rohit has always been a lazy player whereas Gambhir is all heart and makes a perfect opening combination with Rahul

Rohit has been coming of injury so its fair to wait till full IPL before making any judgement.

Gambhir has always been super in IPL and he continues to do that but that's just about it. He is behind Rohit, Rahul and even Dhawan. Age is not with Gambhir, anymore.

Ideally, Rahul and Rohit should be Indian openers in limited over cricket for next 4 year. Both are in their prime and both are stroke makers and can impact the game far better than Gambhir.

Age isn't a criteria , Gambhit is 35 , Dhoni and Yuvi and even Nehra are similar.
Rohit has not proven himself for a long time , yes, he's coming off an injury but if you can't even prove yourslef in the IPL - you are way out of form and need to sit out. It's horses for courses and Rohit is unable to buy runs at this time and certainly doesn't deserve a spot.
I am not going by the past peformances of Gambhir in the IPL - I am concerned about how the players are performing right now and Gambhir is outplaying Rohit in every aspect at this point.
India does need to sustain with Rohit in the future not questioning that , for the CT - Rohit would need to be out unless he picks himself , I rather have a RH/LH combination of Gambhir and Rahul open. Dhawan should not even come close to the team bus at this point

Now Rishab Pant carnage...already 37*(14) and still going strong...
    ---

    16.6

    UT Yadav to Pant, FOUR
    16.5

UT Yadav to Pant, SIX, this is some carnage. Umesh has got his lengths all wrong here. Full, outside off, giving him all the room he needs to lift it from outside off and clean over long-on. Again, powerful bottom hand

Fine leg comes inside the circle now.

    16.4

UT Yadav to Pant, SIX, what a shot that is! That has just been punched off the pads. Powerful wrists from Pant. On leg stump this time and fuller, just picks it up and flicks it away over backward square leg. Lot of bottom hand there
    16.3

UT Yadav to Pant, FOUR, and this time it is short and wide, too easy for Pant who flays it uppishly over the backward point region
    16.2

UT Yadav to Pant, SIX, that has just been jabbed away, off the middle of the bat and powerfully struck. Picks the length early and gets on top of it, picks it up from outside off and thumps it over mid-on
    16.1

UT Yadav to Pant, no run, lovely channel. Good length, angling away and gets it to tail away late and beats the forward push of the batsman

there is batting talent without any doubt, some clean hitters with good head above shoulders, but bowling quality is so ****** that we can say with quite confidence that for years to come India will remain a batting superpower with meager bowling resources. Will keep winning at home and losing away
