Champions Trophy 2017 - Australia announce squad

The Cricket Australia National Selection Panel have named the following 15 player squad for the ICC Champions Trophy being held in England and Wales next month.

    Steve Smith (C) NSW
    David Warner (vc) NSW
    Pat Cummins NSW
    Aaron Finch VIC
    John Hastings VIC
    Josh Hazlewood NSW
    Travis Head SA
    Moises Henriques NSW
    Chris Lynn QLD
    Glenn Maxwell VIC
    James Pattinson VIC
    Mitchell Starc NSW
    Marcus Stoinis WA
    Matthew Wade TAS
    Adam Zampa SA

Speaking on the make-up of the squad National Selector Trevor Hohns said: “We have selected a very exciting well balanced squad that will give us plenty of options with both batting and bowling, depending on the conditions.

“We are in a very fortunate position at the moment with a large number of quality players available for selection, as such this was a very difficult team to choose and there have been some unlucky players on this occasion.”

Returning to the one-day international squad following a lay-off with injury are Victorian fast-bowlers James Pattinson and John Hastings.

“Both James and John have made very good returns from injury and are bowling well for their respective teams in the English County competition as well as both contributing well with the bat.

“When you also add Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins to the fast bowling artillery it becomes a very exciting proposition for Australian cricket.”

Both Starc and Queensland batsman Chris Lynn have been named in the squad as they make their return from injury.

“Our medical staff will continue to monitor Mitchell and Chris’ recovery from their respective injuries but we are hopeful they will be fit in time for the team’s departure on May 18.”

New South Wales batting all-rounder Moises Henriques has been re-called to the side having last played for the national one-day squad against Sri Lanka in August last year.

“Moises finished off the domestic season very well and has had a great start in the Indian Premier League. We believe Moises’ batting has improved significantly in the past six months and he will provide us with a strong option should he be selected.”

Tasmanian all-rounder James Faulkner has been omitted from the side.

“James has been a consistent performer for the one-day squad for several years, however with players such as Pattinson, Cummins and Hastings coming back to full fitness and the emergence of Marcus Stoinis, James was squeezed out of the squad and an unlucky omission,” said Hohns.

Those players that are in Australia will depart for England on 18 May with the remaining players in the IPL to join as their teams finish in the tournament.

Finch, Pattinson, Stoinis and Henriques pretty lucky in my view.

They have some serious pace attack consisting of Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins and Pattinson, would love to see all 4 play together.

Pattinson is pretty average in limited overs matches. Hastings should definitely play ahead of him.

My team from this would be

    1. Warner
    2. Head
    3. Smith*
    4. Lynn
    5. Maxwell
    6. Henriques
    7. Wade+
    8. Hastings/Cummins
    9. Starc
    10. Zampa
    11. Hazlewood

    Hastings?

I thought CA moved on from him.

And on what basis has Henriques been selected? He's been a consistent failure at the international level, yet somehow Trevor Holmes manages to place him into the ODI squad and that to at the expense of Faulkner.

Henriques is in on the basis that Mitch Marsh is best XI and isn't available.

Faulkner will never be considered for a top 6 batting position so was never in contention for that spot.

And what has Marsh done to suggest that he can bat in the top six against quality attacks?

Cartwright was a better option considering Smith isn't going to bowl too much of Marsh.

Well Mitch Marsh did average over 40 in ODI cricket in 2016 and performed well against South Africa and made the ICC ODI team of the year.

And he regularly bowls over 5 overs a game in ODI cricket.

People too often mistake Mitch Marsh the limited overs player for Mitch Marsh the test player.

Good bowling squad but lite on batting. Too many t 20 specialists in batting other than warner and smith.
It all depends on pitches and weather. If the weather is cloudy then aus batsman will struggle. Uf they r flat expect aus to score massive runs

What's up with no Marsh in the team? Is he injured?

One of the most valuable limited overs players in the world.

When players like Bailey, Finch, Faulkner struggle to make the squad, that's when you know you got ridiculous amounts of talent.

Bailey is best XI but he's old and won't make the 2019 world cup.

Haha, Bailey is only 3 years older than Pakistans youngster Asad Shafiq tho? I can see Australia actually retaining the World Cup while becoming a genuine top 3 test side...probably 1st.

What do you think of Ashes this year? I reckon it's gonna be one of the best series' we will witness since Ashes 2013. We've got Root, Bairstow, Cook, Haseeb vs Smith, Warner, Renshaw and Handscomb. Honourable mentions to the beard vs Maxwell. Bowling line up however Australia wins.

I see Australia taking back the Ashes sadly lol.

A strong pace bowling attack and they have a leg spinner in Zampa who is capeble of getting wickets in the middle overs. Bowling they have have good options.

Batting is relient on Smith and Warner. Maxwell and Lynn are inconsistent but if they come off and one of Warner or Smith anchors the innings Australia will post big scores.

Australia and South Africa are the favourites for me.

Smith and Warner are the best right now. They can take the game away from opposition in a very short time. They are the best.

Head is a quite good I agree, but Finch has a good temperament and he can succeed if he is given enough chances.

Faulkner should have been a shoo-in for mine. Other than that a solid squad.
