Don't see United winning the league with the current squad, they need a solid CDM and probably one winger.

Michael Carrick is the new captain of Manchester United.

The 35-year-old midfielder has taken over the armband from Wayne Rooney following the latter’s transfer to Everton on Saturday, at the end of his glittering 13-season career at Old Trafford.

Carrick offered his immediate reaction to the news while talking exclusively to MUTV in Los Angeles, where Jose Mourinho’s men are currently training as part of Tour 2017, presented by Aon.

“It feels great and it is such a huge honour to captain such a great club,” Michael told us. “It is my 12th year now and I came as a 25 year old. I never thought I could be here for so long and achieve so much.

"Now, to lead the boys and look after the young boys, to guide them in some ways, it is a nice thing and a real pleasure. I came to this club as a footballer and I am now a huge fan. I have grown to love the club over the years and to be in this position is very special for me.”

Asked what his captaincy style will be, having played under previous United skippers Gary Neville, Nemanja Vidic and Rooney, as well as the likes of David Beckham, John Terry and Steven Gerrard with England, Carrick said: “I will just be myself, you can’t change and it is wrong to come into the role and then suddenly change, shouting and screaming at everyone, telling them what to do.

"I am not like that. I will speak when I need to speak, but I am quite laid back and chilled out really. I will try to lead by example.”

He'll probably play the role of club captain, a bit like Gary Neville did even when he stopped being a regular starter. As club captain of a team (and commercial outfit) like Man Utd the role of club captain is much more than just being captain on the pitch. So when he's not starting, someone (a new role of vice captain?) who is more of a regular starter will be the captain on the pitch. Herrera? De Gea? Valencia? Hope it's not Smalling as he shouldn't be a regular starter if all other centre backs are fit. In fact it wouldn't be such a bad idea to sell Smalling.

I'd liked to have seen a proper playing captain to be honest. We need a proper goal scoring winger and we'll be in a good position for the league. I don't have much confidence in Mikhitaryan to be consistent.

    Manchester United | 2017/2018 Season

Good start to the season so far, let's hope we can keep it up for the first 5/6 fixtures. Not to get carried away as we won our first 3 games last season, albeit not as comfortably and we are stronger this season.

Manchester United fear that Paul Pogba could be sidelined for much longer than first thought.

United expected their record signing to miss a maximum of six weeks due to the hamstring injury suffered against Basel in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Jose Mourinho reportedly fell out with the midfielder, as well as teammate Ander Herrea, as a result of the blow, for which the club blame Pogba.

The Portuguese is likely to be even more annoyed as The Times now report that he could miss up to three months of action.

According to the esteemed Duncan Castles, Pogba ‘may need as many as 12 weeks of rehabilitation’, which could rule him out up until January.

The Frenchman is certain to miss upcoming fixtures against Everton, Liverpool and Tottenham, but the extended time on the sidelines could also see him ruled out of games against Chelsea in November, as well as fixtures against Arsenal and Manchester City in December.

He would also miss United’s remaining five Champions League group games if the current diagnosis is as bad as first feared.

Jose Mourinho denies Paul Pogba has been ruled out for 12 weeks

MANCHESTER -- Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho insists he still does not know how bad Paul Pogba's hamstring injury is.

Reports on Sunday suggested the France international could be out for 12 weeks after picking up the problem during the victory over Basel in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Pogba missed the 4-0 win over Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday, but afterwards Mourinho insisted no one inside the club knows the full extent of the problem.

He told a news conference: "I don't know if it is 12 weeks or 12 days. Honestly, any comment, any view, any rumour is totally wrong, because we do not know if it is 12 weeks or 12 days.

"The player was diagnosed initially after the match because of the conditions of the muscle and bleeding, was one more week to wait and see clearly in the scans, and nobody in this club spoke about 12 days or 12 weeks.

"It's a muscular injury in the hamstring but we have a normal procedure and wait a few more days. It's completely nonsense information."

Pogba is set to miss the League Cup tie against Burton Albion on Wednesday and is unlikely to be fit to face Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday.

United also have games against CSKA Moscow and Crystal Palace before the next international break.

Their first game back after the break is against Liverpool at Anfield in what will be United's first test against another top-six side.

I thought they had a good first 20 minutes or so. From then on it started looking like many home matches last year, where united would score early but then easy chances started being missed, opposition goalkeepers having blinders and even the woodwork playing as additional defenders. The opposition would hang in there somehow, then start going for it with 10 - 15 minutes left, and end up getting an equaliser just before the final whistle.

With Lukaku missing easy chances and United starting to look short of ideas, Everton had a few good chances to equalise, two of which were to Rooney where he should have scored.

The 4-0 final score was a bit flattering to the way United played. With Pogba potentially out for up to 12 weeks, there's not much creativity in centre-mid. Plus with so many games coming up, only having Matic, Herrera, Fellaini and Carrick for centre/defensive-mid, any suspensions or more injuries could leave United in trouble with big games coming up.

Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini is set to miss their Premier League game at Liverpool after picking up a knee injury playing for Belgium.

The 29-year-old went off after 29 minutes of a World Cup qualifying win over Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday.

In a post on social media, Belgium said Fellaini has had a scan and will be "out for a couple of weeks".

They face Cyprus in their final World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, while United travel to Anfield on 14 October.

The Old Trafford club then visit Benfica in the Champions League four days later before a trip to Huddersfield in the league on 21 October.

Fellaini has scored four goals for United this season, including two in a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace in their last game before the international break.

He looks set to join fellow United midfielder Paul Pogba, who is out with a hamstring injury, on the sidelines for his club.

Think people are being harsh on Lukaku in an effort play the media's favourite game, and pin the blame on somebody.

Offensively - I think he did ok. Was not really given much service, and with the chance at the end...sometimes they go in, sometimes they don't. It happened to hit Ederson's face.

Defensive errors - well, if you want to defend with 11 men, then your primarily offensive players are always able to make mistakes. Defending is not their prime role, and hence why they usually play in another end of the pitch. The goals were sloppy to concede, yes. Was Lukaku culpable....for the first one, maybe yeah, but second one was unlucky. He went to hoof it clear, which half the team did at some stage of the game, and it cannoned back of another player. It happens when you are clearing blindly.

On big games - I won't judge him too much at Everton. He is really a penalty box striker. Against the big teams, more often than not, Everton were pretty much playing backs against the wall stuff. Lukaku is not a player like Messi, Hazard, Ronaldo, etc...who has the capacity to create something from nothing. He needs service.

At United...big games so far. Liverpool - no service whatsoever. Chelsea - again same as against Liverpool. City - offensively given little to play with again, and missed his only genuine chance. Got much more involved in general play though (unfortunately in both halves).

Mourinho has to look at himself here. 3 big games, no real results. Has to update the coaching manual. Sitting deep and playing on the break is not as revolutionary as it once was, and is difficult when your midfield is 1) too brittle to hold a team out - City and Arsenal were able to cut through it waaaay to easily and 2) lacks players capable of making quick, incisive passes.

Also to add - defeat is not really that disappointing. City are the better team, and are playing much better than us. What is annoying is that in this game, City were not at their best and looked sloppy. We did not concede goals due to brilliant attacking play from City, but two scrappy goals from set pieces, which were easily avoidable.

If we showed a little more composure, and confidence in our ability to attack, City were vulnerable. Noticeable that the first time a full back (Valencia) got forward was after we conceded, and had to go for it to make a game of it. 2 mins after that run and cross from Valencia, we forced an error in a shaky looking City defence, and scored.

Who knows what would have happened if Mourinho was prepared to risk that earlier in the game

We did get our tactics wrong but who would've though City would beat us due to set pieces.

City will get the applause due to the record now and due to the fact people look at goals only but they were dire in attack yesterday, side ways and backward passes is all they were doing for much of the game, our defence wasn't brilliant and they failed to breach it in open play.

As for Lukaku, he was never going to do well when in big games when your team sits back and defends leaving him isolated, he did however get the assist that led to the winner against spurs. Could have done better at Arsenal but his confidence is shot right now, needs a couple of goals to get going again.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho said the £300m he has spent on his squad so far is "not enough", after their 2-2 draw with Burnley on Tuesday.

Jesse Lingard scored a late equaliser but United are 12 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City.

"We are in the second year of trying to rebuild a football team that you know is not one of the best teams in the world," said Mourinho.
He added: "Manchester City buy full-backs for the price of strikers."

Mourinho was appointed United boss in May 2016 and broke the world record that summer to sign £89m midfielder Paul Pogba. He also recruited £30m defender Eric Bailly, and midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan for £26.3m.

This year, United spent £75m on striker Romelu Lukaku, as well as £31m on defender Victor Lindelof and £40m for midfielder Nemanja Matic.

Title rivals City, meanwhile, bought three defenders - Kyle Walker from Tottenham for an initial £45m, Benjamin Mendy from Monaco for £52m and Danilo from Real Madrid for £26.5m - as part of a summer outlay that topped £200m.

"[Spending £300m] is not enough," said Mourinho. "The price for the big clubs is different than for the other clubs. The big historical clubs are normally punished in the market because of that history.

"The boys are doing what they can and they are doing fine."

Mourinho was asked if eight points from the past five games was good enough for a club like United.

In his response he cited Italian giants AC Milan, who sit 11th in Serie A, and European champions Real Madrid, fourth in La Liga and 14 points behind leaders Barcelona.

"When you tell a club like Man Utd, do you think Milan is not as big as us? You think Real Madrid are not as big as we are?" said Mourinho.

"I know what a big club is. One thing is a big club and another thing is a big football team. They are two different things.
"When you speak about responsibilities to win the Premier League, Tottenham doesn't have that responsibility because they are not a club with the same history as us.

"Arsenal don't have the responsibility to win it. Chelsea don't have the responsibility to win it. When you speak about big football clubs, you are speaking about the history of the club."

Jose will soon be giving Arsene a run for his money when it comes to the whining.

They are winless in 3 against the mighty Bristol City, Leicester and Burnley yet he's moaning about not having enough money to spend lol.

Holiday season was our strong point historically pretty sad seeing current performances..

I guess should focus on winning CL now and finish in top 4.

£300M not enough - ok Jose.

I think he's been very negative in his approach and hasn't utilised the players as well as he could have.

Jose Mourinho is the next Arsene Wenger, he also has 3 premier league titles to his name, but now he is pretty much exposed as a manager so he is resorting to other tactics...

Wenger's time has been up for quite a while now... I can recall 2013/14 as his last decent shot at the title which collapsed in Feb like always, even Ranieri outsmarted him in 15/16 with an inferior squad and resources.

Another poor performance by Jose's boys. They barely had a shot on target (against a team who conceded 5 vs Spurs the other day).

So boring to watch are this Man Utd team unlike previous ones. They have spent £300 million yet I can not see one player that would really frighten the opposition. They hardly created any problems against Southampton today. Jose's signings have been very poor.

    Gutted about the Christmas period.
We should have won a couple of the games and top 4 would have been sealed by now. Then we could have focused on the fa cup and CL.
But now top 4 is back in the melting point

Match fixing and corruption in all sport is the most important thing for authorities to stamp out. There aren't too many high profile cases of match fixing in football but one Manchester United player faces trial in Spain for it.

Wherever money is involved life is set up for people to try underhand tactics to make some, sport is no different and especially where it comes to match fixing and gambling.

There has been many examples of it in sport, especially in cricket where Hansie Cronje's case and the situation with three Pakistan cricketers in England on the 2010 tour are prime examples.

Football in Italy has had it's problems and now over 33 footballers in Spain face trial for a claim about match fixing in a game between Real Zaragoza and Levante from May 2011.

According to court reports from 2014 there was an alleged £848,450 payment paid to then Zaragoza manager Javier Aguirre as well as the club's sporting director and nine players.

Amongst those players set to be on trial is Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera with the Spaniard releasing a statement today protesting his innocence, saying:

"As I stated back in 2014 when this issue was raised, I have never had and never will have anything to do with to do with manipulating match results.

"If I am ever called to testify in a judicial hearing, I will be delighted to attend as my conscience is totally clear. I love football and I believe in fair play, both on and off the pitch."

In 2014 Atletico Madrid midfielder Gabi, who played for Zaragoza in the game, admitted to investigators that he'd received a payment of £65,000 from the club and he'd paid it back to club president Agapito Iglesias but didn't know what the payment was for, saying, "I did what Agapito asked me."

The trial is expected to take place within the next six months with anyone found guilty facing six months to four years in prison. As reported by the Daily Mail sentences of less than two years are usually suspended by two years.

Newcastle won a Premier League home game for the first time since October with a surprise victory over second-placed Manchester United.

Matt Ritchie scored the only goal in the second half as the Magpies climbed out of the relegation zone and left the visitors 16 points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

The Red Devils missed a string of chances to take something from a ground where manager Jose Mourinho is yet to win a league match.

But debutant Martin Dubravka was excellent in the Newcastle goal, denying Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial, Ashley Young and Michael Carrick.

And the hosts could have had a first-half penalty when Chris Smalling tripped Dwight Gayle.

Defeat for Manchester United raises the prospect that Manchester City could be crowned champions at Old Trafford on 7 April.

Edit: Above report inaccurate as Man City already played Man Utd at Old Trafford. Will be at the Etihad.

Man Utd have no flair at all these days. They are a workmanlike side with a few decent players. Up front they seem rather weak where as there is little creativity in the middle. So far Sanchez has failed to deliver where as Pogba was always overrated, Lakaku is inconsistent. In Mourinho they have a coach who has never really played an exciting brand of Football wherever he has gone, they knew what they were getting when they signed him on. Heaven help them if that is the best they can do after having spent so heavily in the transfer market. Just hope Mourinho isn't sacked otherwise we could have another "mujhe kyun nikala" protest on our hands!

When you do not trust your best midfielder to try and run the game...this is what happens.

Absolutely no ability to keep the ball - and thereby control the game. The amount of times possession was squandered in midfield meant that players started to resort to hoofing it up to Fellaini and Lukaku - which again, more often then not, meant losing the ball.

Rashford was poor in his decision making - does not matter that he was playing on the right hand side. If you get a pass with space in front of you, the least you can do is run into it...not dither, then launch a cross into the stands. The amount of times he went for the wrong option was unbelievable, but that wont be highlighted in the English press.

Lingard did nothing to get involved. Can only guess he was meant as a No.10 who could press, hassle and harry the Sevilla midfield and defence. Did nothing of the sort.

Sanchez was poor. Frequently just runs aimlessly inside, and runs into a bunch of opposition players. No threat offered whatsoever.

Bailly and Lukaku are the only players that can come out with some credit. Matic was overwhelmed in midfield, which resulted in a poor performance...but harsh to blame him when he had no help from Fellaini or Lingard.

Poor night for the club, and poor night from Mourinho who got the team selection, all wrong, leading to a terrible performance. I can understand that he feels he needs more solutions in midfield, but its hard to trust him when he selects Fellaini and trys to play hoofball. Would he really have the patience and more importantly, the will to integrate a deep lying player who can dictate the game and keep the ball.

But - one thing. What he said at the end. I can understand him trying to play down the scale of the defeat. This week was going to be important week of the season with the CL and FA Cup games. We have had a setback with Sevilla, but now we have the most important game of the season to date on Saturday.

For a man who has forged his reputation as someone who deals in winning, the FA Cup is our only realistic shot at silverware. With City out of it, we have a great chance. We have to focus on that game, and not allow the atmosphere around the players to get too negative. So to try and brush this game under the carpet is the right move...for now.

I warned all my Manu friends about Mourinho.
How can a manager, self-proclaimed the Special One, lose his job after a second stint at a club which he says he loves.. that to just one season after winning the league????

Surely this would have sent alarm bells ringing...

I dont endorse Mourinhos tactics but this is typical in football, lose one game and its the end of the world. Just one week ago it was because of Mourinhos tactics we completly out played Liverpool and he schooled Klopp, beat Chelsea and are still second in the league.

Yea sometimes he gets it completly wrong like in both legs against seville, against spurs, persisting with Felaini, playing Pogba out of position, not dropping Sanchez but the facts are he is still doing way better than his Preceders.
