DEAN ELGAR scored his 8th Test century and his 3rd in the current calendar year to delay the inevitable before England won the third Test match against the Standard Bank Proteas by 239 runs at The Oval in London on Monday with plenty of time and overs to spare.

Elgar is now the leading runs scorer in Test cricket this year (762 at an average of 50.80) and for a long time it looked as though he would emulate his performance against England at home when he carried his bat at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead.

It was not to be, however, as he was eighth man out for 136 (228, 20 fours) and his dismissal precipitated the end of the innings as he was the first victim of a Moeen Ali hat trick that finished the match.

Eagar had earlier shared a partnership of 108 for the fifth wicket with Temba Bavuma before the latter was dismissed (32 off 97 balls, 2 fours) and with Vernon Philander being dismissed first ball it was only going to be a matter of time before the end came.

Ali (4/45) was the most successful of the England bowlers while Toby Roland-Jones finished with an outstanding 8 wickets on debut.

England are now 2-1 up in the four-match series with the final match to be played at Old Trafford from this Friday. England have thus retained the Basil D’Oliveira Trophy that they won in South Africa last year.

England’s Ben Stokes was named Man of the Match for his first innings century and his key bowling spell on the fourth evening.

He breaks records every Test match even when he's taking a break @Big Mac No wonder he has so much support in the dressing room to the point where specialists are dropped. Hopefully Saq is kept around for a while, anyhow I doubt anyone would have predicted that Mo would have 100+ wickets by now!

Ah, so this is what it feels like

    @shaz619 @Robert @James.

    LAND OF HOPE N GLORY.

GOD SAVE OUR GRACIOUS QUEEN. LONG LIVE OUR NOBLE QUEEN.

The Saffers have been demolished by the Ginger the Beard and the Debutant.

Is there anything that can stop this England team now.

With this loss, SA's chances of regaining the #1 spot in Test rankings has taken a big hit.

If they win the last Test, they will be 9 points behind India, if they draw they will be 12 points behind, and if they lose they will be 13 points behind.

No prize for guessing the result I will be rooting for

Pffft, I've always believed in him. How long before Rashid takes a couple of wickets in a T20 game and Mamoon goes back to tagging me in posts about how I'm an idiot for thinking Moeen > Rashid

Yeah, he out-performed Moeen on the Indian tour but the English team know he's still rubbish which is why he's never played a test outside of the sub-continent.

It's more that seamers win tests in England. Traditionally, the spinner is there to block an end up and give the seamers a rest, not bowl a lot of four-balls and maybe take a couple of wickets. Finger spinners do this job in England better than wrist-spinners. The art of wrist-spin has been pretty much dead in England since the 1950s.

Elgar is a brilliant test match batsmen. Good innings by him, a shame he didn't get support from his team mates.

But England deserved the vicory here. Stokes played a brilliant knock and also impacted the game with the bowl as well. Furthermore England bowlers made better use of the conditions then there South African counterparts.

Backed England to win this series and I'll stick with that prediction.
