Tons away from home in the last 10 years,

    Kohli 14
    Cook 14
    Smith 10
    Kane 9
    Pujara 8
    Azhar 8
    Clarke 8
    YK 8
    ..
    ...
    ..
    Root 4

He needs to start scoring tons away from home. Cute 50s often don't win test matches.

Wasn't he supposed to be the best batsman in the world the moment he scored 124 in Sri Lanka?

And didn't Kane Williamson snatch that title from him immediately and became the best batsman in the world when he scored that century against Pakistan in the U.A.E.?

It's really a big two between Smith and Kohli tbh.

Kane doesn't convert as much for an elite batsmen. Root is a lot worse than him (in converting).

The problem is they're not as consistent as the other two, they have one good performance and follow up with little after that. They don't have that period where it feels like they're going to score a century every second innings like Smith and Kohli.

Root has always been overrated. He's the best English batter but nowhere near the likes of Smith, Kohli, Williamson. Just because he's English and England rarely get great Test batsmen, Root became their darling.

Kohli only had 1 bad England tour in 2014 where he averaged 13. Since then Kohli has averaged 86, 38, 62, 53, 47, 59, 40 in away tours (not counting 1 match Bangladesh tour)

Last time Root averaged 50+ in an away tour was 2015.

Root is a tremendous batsman. He is simply going through a rough patch - I expect him to have a big World Cup and Ashes. He is the youngest of all the elite batsmen in the world and his peak is yet to come.

In spite of his recent slump, I still consider him the second best all-round batsman of this generation.

He was at 1 probably 3 years ago.

Right now there's a strong case for Williamson ahead of him.

Root is struggling, and with captaincy and strange ideas of having a team of 11 batsmen rather than specialists is weird. Their top 3 are the worst.

Once the holes are fixed his performances would be better.

But still Root is good only in Tests, way behind in ODIs and T20s

I know its a completely different format but Root plays so well in ODI's with no pressure of captaining the team. I think if England could get the captaincy off him that would help his form. Some players can cope with the demands of captaincy but i don't think Root is one of them. England need the prolific scoring Root back. He can't even score fifties anymore. The only problem is that there are no other real captaincy options. Butler is one but his place is not really secure.

The problem is every England captain bar none starts to struggle with the captaincy a year or two into it. If it isn't Root, you will merely be anointing another poor bloke to be the next champion of decline.

Gooch got better. Atherton and Nasser were about the same. Gatting the skipper was about the same in average as before captaincy but instead of consistency tended to go fail, fail, 150, fail, fail, 180.

But most decline in run production. There’s just too much for the skipper to do. Poor Root has it double hard because instead of Trescothick and Strauss above him like Vaughan did, he has nothing.

Very very poor from someone hailed as one of the greats of this generation, I personally rate Pujara more than him, Puji may not be be as talented as Root but he more than compensates it with sheer grit and temperament.

PP likes to claim Umar Akmal has more natural talent than Kohli so that term has no value.

No, it’s a concentration issue. Most England skippers get it.

Still, here’s an overseas ton for him, the fifth out of sixteen.

A very talented batsman. Was just going through a lean phase.

If there is a better batsman than Sachin then he hasnít arrived yet: Viv Richards

Nice of him to step up when the series is over and England are already in a dominant position.

Some real tough runs from Joe fiddy

2 dead rubber tons out of his last 3 now.

Well, at least he is back in form.

Not sure this is a dead rubber in every sense - if England lost 0-3 and Root failed he would be under massive pressure to step down.

Root is starting to remind of me a certain Asad Shafiq

Rooty is class though, and I am sure he will score in more winning causes.

Holder isn't playing and series is already lost, not sure what this ton is supposed to show.

Root's Test average has dropped below 50, which shows that he hasn't been consistent for his team in recent times. Scoring a hundred and flopping in the rest of the innings will not help your team at all.
