The Proteas are in bad shape. I doubt they'll be anywhere near their best in the short-term future.

i'm a purist but can say this series has been a terrible advert for test cricket

I think it's been proper test cricket. Batters fighting to make runs against good bowlers on bowler-friendly wickets. Low scoring matches are usually the most exciting.

Another 150 runs or so (should be easy enough) and the door is pretty much shut. SA have shown very little mental strength throughout this meet. I wonder if the West Indies series will be a better contest.

it hasn't even been that though, i wouldnt have called these pitches greentops. it's just been a nothingness of a series really, at least a whitewash would have given us something to talk about. and again it just seems weird for a sporting match to be so done halfway into a whole 5 days, i would honestly look into making test matches more compact as well as giving some more incentive for higher RR, as this run now is just boring and pointless

England making heavy weather of it.

The newbies playing for their places and Cook falling early didn't help.

Root is the key here, he needs to tie one end up and let Stokes/Johnny/Ali play with freedom from the other.

Westley might have the skillset to score runs at this level (jury's still out), but Jennings is in abysmal form, and wow Malan appears to be an absolute rabbit. Definitely 2 batting changes needed for the first Test against West Indies.

All-rounders, wicketkeepy and bowlers meanwhile look really solid and good quality.

Given SA's batting struggles on this tour and run scoring being difficult for England in this innings - England may have enough runs already.

Maharaj is exploiting the rough which bodes well for Moeen who's caused SA problems this series.

All these 3 new batsman are rubbish actually. Ian butler should play. How about an idea One Inning should be keep by Ian butler and second inning by bairstow. Manage the workload. Surely there is better batsman than westley and malan! I actually really like the idea of 8 batsman - 5 bowler. Pretty hard to beat such a team

Possibly but Root won't be declaring until lead is around 400 given the chance and Eng being 2-1 up.

After what's gone on in the test so far, SA will gladly take 300 to level the series.

    Next 2 hours are crucial.

200 runs and 20 wickets in 4 tests has been done by:

Botham - 244 runs and 20 wickets vs India in 1979

Hadlee - 301 runs and 21 wickets in England in 1983

Imran Khan - 212 runs and 21 wickets in England in 1982

MJ Procter - 209 runs and 26 wickets vs Australia in 1969/70

AK Davidson - 212 runs and 33 wickets vs Windies in 1960/61

Moeen is on 230+ runs and has 20 wickets with one more innings of bowling left.

Tell me again about how much Adil Rashid turns his leg-break and should take Moeen's place in the test team. @shaz619

Markhor once upon a time had delicious pie in Bradford and ever since he has been unable to give up his fandom of Rashid. Mamoon on the other hand is a like a Kim K Robot on auto-pilot that disagrees with the popular view even when it doesn't make any sense to go against the grain

Markhor is a Yorkshireman or something and they don't really know anything about cricket.

Mamoon only likes Rashid because his beard is smaller than Moeen's, otherwise he'd insist Rashid 'bhai' is crap too.

There is no obsession. I just think its weird for Trevor Bayliss to drop his best spinner on the India tour which was Rashid, declare Liam Dawson the "No 1 spinner" and Ali the "No 2 spinner" - then drop Dawson and make Ali the main spinner over the course of one series !

I'm not convinced Ali should remain the frontline spinner especially with an Ashes tour coming up - Australia is a brutal place for off-spin. I'd groom Mason Crane as the England's #1 spinner for the long-term. Ali's main asset is his batting and as we saw today is an effective counterpuncher.

However he can certainly be a handy second spinner. Saqlain seems to have made a positive impact. His control has improved and is not bowling as many loose deliveries as before.

Again SA letting another lower order batsman score big and in the process letting the game slip away.

They should have shot out England for 165 and given themselves a target of 280 which is with in their reach. Now they have to chase in excess of 350 here.

Apparently highest ever successful chase in the final innings at Old Trafford is 294. And this SA side is hardly the strongest team ever to take on the challenge lol. England have this one in the bag.

    Wkt of the 4th ball.

Can Moeen get Eng to a lead of 400

Frank Skinner: Pakistan looked better than this when they were trying to lose.

England's lower order is stronger than their top order. I swear at least one of Stokes, Bairstow or Ali score runs when the top order usually flops.

Difference between the teams has been England's great lower order.

Broad has dismissed Amla eight times, more than any other bowler.

Getting him to play and miss a few times in this over. Don't think SAF are going to last long in this 4th innings.

Not convinced by Bavuma's dismissal- the small spike seemed to occur after the ball had passed the bat. Given the on-field decision was not out, is that really enough evidence to overturn the decision?
