[VIDEOS] Sargodha win the Lahore Qalandars 2017 Rising Stars tournament

Lahore Qalandars, Pakistan Super League’s most avidly followed franchise, and Jazz, telecom giant, have announced the 2nd Edition of The Jazz Rising Stars initiative across Punjab, this time adding in AJK. Jazz Rising Stars got a massive response in its inaugural year, garnering over 113,000 aspiring cricketers from across Punjab, with the aim to make this year even bigger.

This project has been initiated to further the development of grass roots cricket in the country by providing youth a platform to further hone and showcase their skills. Lahore Qalandars and Jazz wish to transform the local cricketing landscape in the coming months through this development program. In the 2nd Edition of Jazz Rising Stars, the horizon expands as Qalandars in addition to Punjab also aim to capture the untapped Azad Jammu & Kashmir by conducting the talent hunt in Kashmir as well as the Punjab.

Shahbaz Maqsood, Director Marketing Jazz said: “Jazz Rising Stars, the award winning movement that changed the lives of many and showcased our grass-root cricketing talent to the world, is back with its Season 2. Despite the blistering summer heat, Jazz Rising Stars Season 1 superseded its expected footfall of 40,000 to a record breaking 111,300 registered participants, making it the largest cricket talent hunt of the world. It discovered unique talent like ambidextrous fast bowler Yasir Jan, launched the careers of aspiring cricketers, Usman Qadir, Saif Badar, Mohammad Irfan and Ghulam Mudassar, won prestigious awards and brought international acclaim to Pakistan. I feel proud that Jazz and Lahore Qalandars took the initiative last year and I'm excited about an even bigger Season 2.”

Atif Rana, CEO Lahore Qalandars, explained: 'The aspiring cricketers will not have to seek nationalities of developed cricketing nations for opportunities. All they have to do is to come to Qalandars and we will give them chances at competitive level,'

Chairman of the Lahore Qalandars, Mr. Fawad Rana, recognizing Jazz’s contribution along with his own management team’s, went on to say, “We are a nation with a unique and proud heritage. We have a relentless, fearless zest for life and an abundance of talented youth. Qalandars along with our partners, the PCB, Jazz, and media partners, have created this platform for this youth to make its mark – to excel and showcase their talents across Pakistan and to the rest of the world through this PDP and Sydney tour. Our beloved Kashmir has been added to the PDP for the very reason this very reason – you are our family and a part of us. This is your opportunity and platform as much as anyone else’s.”

Director of Cricket Operations Aqib Javed added: “The tremendous talent we discovered last year has been the biggest pay-off for me and our Qalandars team. I am sure the interest has only multiplied this time around, with a proven track record of transparency and fulfilling promises. This time too I hope to find the rarest gems our nation has to offer and help them explore their highest potential.

The Jazz Rising Stars can be divided in to three stages and targets seven major cities of Punjab, namely, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Layyah, Bahawalpur and Azad Jammu & Kashmir’s Mirpur and Muzaffarabad.

During the first stage, a talent hunt will be conducted in each of the cities. At the end of the two day trial, 16 players will be shortlisted from each city. In the second stage, a tournament will take place, where the city-wise teams made up of the 16 shortlisted players will go head to head for the Jazz Rising Stars Trophy in Muzaffarabad Cricket Stadium and concluding at Gaddafi Stadium Lahore. 15 best players will visit Sydney for a tri series vs Sydney Thunder and Sydney Sixer. Four of the best performing players at the tournament’s conclusion will be given the opportunity to join the official Lahore Qalandars squad for PSL 2018.

I believe, it's T20 tournament. I understand LQ is a T20 franchise, but ideally this tournament should have been 2 innings matches, at least 50 overs match. Tough to identify emerging talent with 4 overs bowling, batsmen as well.

Mirpur, Azad Jammu & Kashmir – 27th August, 2017: Lahore Qalandars, Pakistan Super League’s most avidly followed franchise, and Jazz, telecom giant, announced the 2nd Edition of The Jazz Rising Stars initiative across Punjab, this time adding in AJK on 19th August. The horizon expands as Qalandars in addition to Punjab also aim to capture the untapped Azad Jammu & Kashmir by conducting the talent hunt in Kashmir as well as the Punjab.

27th August 2017, an historic first day of Jazz Rising Stars in the untapped area of Azad Jammu & Kashmir as for the first time ever in Kashmir, something of this magnitude is happening. Quaid-E-Azam Stadium in Mirpur, Kashmir looks a revived and a breathing-again stadium with thousands of individuals showing up at a stadium covered in colorful branding with 20+ coaches ready to extract the best talent of Kashmir. It is perhaps a momentous day in the history of Azad Jammu & Kashmir because the unearthed and unnoticed talent of Kashmir is finally going to be given a platform to follow their dreams.

Mirpur was one of the most heavily registered areas and the outpouring of emotions in the attendance has been overwhelming. The arrangements are perfect in the sense that the security is very tight making the environment safe for everyone while the coaches have been assigned different sectors to cover and the management team is extremely active in assisting, helping and supporting all the functions.

After the 2-day trials in Mirpur, the next talent-hunt location will be Muzaffarabad on the 30th and 31st of August before Eid-break followed by Rawalpindi on the 4th and 5th of September.

Good initiative which, if done properly, can only benefit Pakistan cricket. Good to see most of the PSL franchises investing in grassroots.

Mirpur, Azad Jammu & Kashmir – 31st August, 2017: Last year, Lahore Qalandars and Jazz launched this program to provide a never-before given platform to the youth of Pakistan. Lahore Qalandars conducted open Cricket trials in 8 Cities from the province of Punjab to extract talent from every street and every corner of the area with absolutely no restriction or bar. 15 selected players got the opportunity to play in Australia in a tri-series against Sydney Thunder and Sydney Sixers and 4 players were chosen for the Lahore Qalandars’ PSL 2017 squad. This year, Jazz and Lahore Qalandars have once again collaborated to bring the 2nd Edition of Jazz Rising Stars not just in Punjab but also in Azad Jammu & Kashmir.
The first stop of Jazz Rising Stars was Mirpur, Azad Kashmir where over 15,000 participants tried their luck in the talent-hunt program. Amongst these 20 players were picked and were taken to Muzaffarabad for the 2nd phase of Kashmir trials for the final selection. Additionally, thousands of participants came to Muzaffarabad, the capital of Azad Jammu & Kashmir. The Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Farooq Haider Khan in Muzaffarabad said:

“Cricket is like a National game in Pakistan, about 80,000 registrations came from Azad Jammu & Kashmir, and knowing these children will get the opportunity to play in Australia and other International countries; I can only thank Lahore Qalandars for this opportunity and for bringing Azad Jammu & Kashmir to mainstream and introduce us to the world”

Tremendous talent was unearthed from the untapped area of Kashmir and the response was overwhelming. In Muzaffarabad, over 19,000 participants showed up for the trials. From the final participants, 60 were shortlisted including the 20 from Mirpur, and from these 60, the final 16 were selected before Jazz Rising Stars wrapped up for Eid-break. The next stop of Jazz Rising Stars will be Rawalpindi on 4th and 5th of September.

Pakistan Super League: Kashmiri pacer ‘bowls over’ former Pak quickie Aaqib Javed with 144 kmph speed

Around 35,000 aspiring cricketers appeared for trials during a talent hunt programme conducted by Pakistan Super League (PSL) team Lahore Qalandars in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

17 players including fast bowler Salman Irshad who “constantly bowled at speed of 144kmph” were selected as part of the first phase of the Jazz Rising Stars program by Lahore Qalandars, Pakistani media reported.

Former Pakistan fast bowler and the Qalandars’ Director Cricket Operations Aaqib Javed was impressed with Salman and said he had the potential to represent Pakistan at the international level.

“I have set a target for him to increase his speed to 150 kph. The angle he creates will help him bowl well in the death overs,” Javed was quoted as saying by a Pakistani channel.

Javed said the youngster was being called to the Lahore Qalandars academy, where he will receive training.

“I am hopeful that from the Lahore Qalandars platform we will give Pakistan its first cricketer from Azad Kashmir,” he said.

Salman has set his eyes on the Pakistan Super League already.

“I bowled at 144 kph after which Aaqib bhai announced that he would take me to the Lahore Qalandars camp and also make me play in the PSL. I will make Azad Kashmir and Pakistan proud,” he said.

The trials were conducted Thursday at Mirpur and Muzaffarabad during the first phase of the program, which will now resume after Eid-ul-Azha.

According to the details provided by Qalandars management, the first stop of Jazz Rising Stars was Mirpur where over 15,000 aspirants tried their luck in the talent-hunt program.

“20 players were picked from trials at Mirpur and were taken to Muzaffarabad for the 2nd phase of Kashmir trials for the final selection,” said Atif Rana, CEO of Lahore Qalandars.

In Muzaffarabad , over 19,000 participants showed up for the trials.

“From these participants, 60 were shortlisted including 20 from Mirpur, and from these 60, the final 17 were selected before Jazz Rising Stars wrapped up for Eid-break,” Rana added.

Players selected from Azad Kashmir trials include Sohail Akhter, Malik Aswad, Ahmed Abbasi, M. Irfan, M. Mubashir, Hassan Raza, M. Yasir, Owais Butt, Salman Irshad, Fahad, Shadab, Usama, M. Bilal, Danyal, Shayan, Tayyab and Ayyan.

This is the second edition of Rising Stars program by Lahore Qalandars. Last year over 113,000 players appeared in trials across eight cities of Punjab.

Of them, after appearing at different stages, 15 selected players were sent to Australia for further experience, while four of them were picked for Qalandars’ PSL side.

If he is the he same guy that played a couple of domestic T20's for AJK a few years back, then he isn't someone that makes you get off your chair. He's a slinger, with the ability to vary length, but his seam position was god awful, Anwar Ali-esque.

If the requirement of the Pakistan T20 team is an unorthodox entity then that slinger from Larkana is a better option. Sadly, due to the incompetence of the PCB it seems he has given up on cricket.

Rawalpindi – 5th September, 2017: Lahore Qalandars and Jazz have once again collaborated to bring the 2nd Edition of Jazz Rising Stars in Punjab and Azad Jammu & Kashmir. Following a brilliant turnout in Kashmir, Qalandars moved to Rawalpindi on 4th and 5th September after Eid-break.

The first day in Rawalpindi was a terrific experience and the turnout was massive as Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium experienced an even bigger number than the thousands witnessed in Kashmir on the previous days. Pakistan Cricket team and Lahore Qalandars star, Yasir Shah also visited the trials extending his support to the Jazz Rising Stars initiative, and saw over the young-talent showcasing their skills. Having the wonderful and motivating personality of Yasir on the field, talking to young players individually, giving them tips, tricks and his cheerful presence only motivated the participants even more who upped their work ethic during the trials to make a bigger impression.

The response in Rawalpindi was overwhelming as great talent was unearthed in this city despite beginning on a holiday. The selection process remained the same, as participants were shortlisted on the first day, and carried forward to the second-day where the players were further trimmed until finally, the best squad was selected to represent the Rawalpindi Rising Stars team. The next stop for Qalandars would be Sargodha on 7th and 8th September.

I assume he means the Lahore Qalandars side.

Anyway, talent hunts like these are hardly going to result in a fully developed cricketer being discovered who is immediately added in the squad and starts producing results. It's an initiative that will bear fruit in the long-term.

Oh yes, that would make sense.

Agree with the part in bold- it's about identifying raw talent. The chances will come in time. Although I must admit I was disappointed Saif wasn't give a game in the previous PSL. Hopefully he will play in the next edition.

I really hope we can find one 150kph+ bowler from all these camps

I always find such talent hunt camps as pointless but if we are gonna see a real speedster again its going to be from such camps

True, but given the national team needs some seam bowling all-rounders I hoped these talent hunts would have made this a priority. Perhaps I am expecting too much, though.

Yar no idea about Hassan Raza. Haven't seen him bat.

From last year I like Saif, Rafay, Irfan, Ehtesham, Ghulam.

These 5 can play for Pakistan in future. Irfan can be our third test seamer (Ambrose like tall bowler which we need as a foil to Amir and Hasan) while Ehtesham i think is more suited to LOIs.

There is no such discovery as most of the guys played domestic, club or regional/national u-19 in past. Atleast they are giving them a platform otherwise teams are filled with same old faces which we are seeing in t20 tournaments from last 5-10 years.

The most favorite franchise of Pakistan Super League, Lahore Qalandars, is all set to revive Cricket in Muzaffarabad, Azad Kashmir. Not only that, LQ is bringing a complete package of “cricketainment” for the people of Azad Kashmir, offering them entertainment and opportunity to win surprise gifts on sidelines of action-packed Cricket matches.

After conclusion of trials at different cities by Lahore Qalandars in collaboration with Jazz for Jazz Rising Stars, the stage is set for the mega Jazz Rising Stars tournament between the teams of eight cities formed following open trials at different venues.
Trials were also conducted in Kashmir with an overwhelming response. Around 15,000 appeared at Mirpur and over 19,000 came in Muzaffarabad showing their eagerness to become a Qalandar.

For them, it was first of kind opportunity.

Similar trials were held at 7 other venues in Punjab as well which led to formation of 8 teams. The selected teams of 8 cities will be in action for Lahore Qalandars’ Jazz Rising Stars tournament, to be played in Muzaffarabad and Lahore.

The picturesque stadium in Muzaffarabad will host matches of group A.

During the tournament, Muzaffarabad Cricket Stadium will become a hub of festivity in Kashmir. Qalandars invite people join the party and enjoy the beautiful game of cricket. Because, along with the cricket action, the Lahore Qalandars has more in bag to offer. The fans will have opportunity to win surprise gifts, which include – but not limited to - Motorbikes, Cars, PSL Tickets, Mobile phones, LQ jerseys, Helmets and many other prizes.

The Qalandars have also contributed towards upgradation of the Muzaffarabad Cricket Stadium before the Jazz Rising Stars tournament. The unconditional support from Azad Jammu & Kashmir Government has been exemplary.

The aim behind bringing the Rising Stars talent hunt program to Kashmir was to provide equal opportunity to the players of Kashmir as they never got any such opportunity before. Lahore Qalandars’ vision to bring happiness to Kashmir is unrivalled.

‘’We want to provide happiness to the nation and Kashmir needed this initiative. The aim is to give people of Azad Jammu & Kashmir; something to smile about. And mission is not limited to select and elevate talent from this area but we will also bring festivity to Kashmir.” C.E.O Lahore Qalandars, Atif Rana said.

Faisalabad, 23rd September 2017: PSL’s beloved franchise Lahore Qalandars continued their astonishing talent-hunt program moving towards their final spot to the city of Faisalabad. The response throughout Jazz Rising Stars talent hunt phase was outstanding as massive numbers turned out but Faisalabad did not disappoint as over 22,400 participants turned up to give trials and make a case for their talent.

Director Cricket Operations Aqib Javed lead his panel of coaches at yet another extremely amassed crowd in Faisalabad working extremely hard to spot unique-talents which the Qalandars are well known for now.

“It has been a thrilling response from Faisalabad and our aim remains the same to create a platform and a path for all talented individuals and make dreams come true” said C.E.O Atif Rana

Lahore Qalandars sign off from the trials-phase with brilliant two days in Faisalabad as they now move onto the tournament phase which begins on 26th September in the beautiful Muzaffarabad Cricket Stadium in Azad Jammu & Kashmir as something of this magnitude happens in AJK for the first time.

Selection of Nauman Anwar as a "rising star" is a little odd given he has already played in the PSL (for KK) and has even represented Pakistan.

Happy to see Ehtisham Sultan and Mudassar Riaz picked again- heard good things about them from LQ's tour of Australia.

Kamran Ghulam, I believe, is also apart of a rising stars team- Rawalpindi I think...

The one who played for Islamabad United in PSL 1? It was harsh of them to drop him, although I suppose it paid dividends with Shadab! He is a good prospect , but he seems to have really fallen down the pecking order as he wasn't even picked for the National t20 cup this year. For this reason, I don't mind him being picked as a "rising star" (even though he has played PSL before).

As for Nauman, someone needs to get into his head and bring the Nauman of old back. By the way, I just noticed he played for LQ in the "Emirates Airline Twenty20 Trophy", which was held in March.

    Scorecard here: http://www.espncricinfo.com/series/8...enty20-trophy/

So he is definitely on their radar- wouldn't be surprised if he featured for them in PSL 3. If so, he needs to make the most of this second opportunity.

    Nope.

All the information that has been added to this thread is via direct press releases from LQ. Seems that they forgot to send out the squads from those two trials.

I'm a big LQ fan but i guess these valiant efforts may not yield anything. They cant find batsmen, wicketkeepers and fielders from the streets simply because they cant judge them in 3-4 balls. The only thing they could find is raw pace which they could polish. They did the same trails last year but couldn't find a single player to play PSL. I know Yasir Jan is a special talent but if he is not allowed to ball from both arms in a single match then whats the usage? from left arm his pace is 130 which is ordinary. Lets hope he could become a good right arm bowler.

Jan is barely 130 km/h with his right arm.

He was only signed on the basis of having the ability to bowl with both hands. He's club level with both hands, no pace and no swing. Having watched him bowl in the nets in Australia I can assure you he would unlikely make a standard domestic team in Pakistan, he's that rubbish.

Salman Irshad is generating good pace. Looks to be bowling in the 137-142 km/h, and rushing Kamran Ghulam. He can potentially bowl faster as he's losing a lot of balance when bowling.

@Chief Destroyer your thoughts on him?

They have uploaded team photos on twitter so that may give us a better idea.

Zeeshan Malik is playing for Rawalpindi, so it does look like players are turning up to both IU's and LQ's tournaments!

Also, according to the scorecard Ruhail Nazir is also playing for Pindi. I know he was playing for Karachi Whites in the PCB's 3 day inter-regional competition (u-19) but they were recently knocked out right? If so, that would explain his availability for this.

It's a lot better. Definetly has potential to represent Pakistan in the shorter formats. However, that slinger from Larkana (one that was termed as a match winner by Wasim, can't remember his name) looked more impressive- as he had the ability to move the ball around whilst bowling in the late 130s to early 140s, prior to any professional training or coaching.

You aren't talking about the left arm slinger Afraz Khoso, by any chance?

    Yep him.

This Ameer Hamza bowling right now for Sargodha also looks nippy. I'm very impressed with the standard of cricket, a lot of these players are better than the dross circling around in the domestic circuit.
