Pakistan to play two Tests in England in 2018 (Full ECB schedule released)

England’s men face world number no 1 Test side India in summer 2018 alongside contests against Pakistan, Australia and Scotland.

The ECB today announced next summer’s international schedule for England’s men’s teams. England will play seven Tests, nine One Day Internationals and four International T20 matches, facing four different international teams.

The summer 2018 schedule brings international matches against:

PAKISTAN - The international summer starts at Lord’s with the first of a two-match Test series against Pakistan. The second Test, in what promises to be a closely contested series after the teams ended all square (2-2) in last summer’s Test series, will be played at Emerald Headingley.

SCOTLAND – The first One Day International of summer 2018 takes England to Edinburgh, where they are hosted by Scotland ahead of England’s series of white ball matches against Australia in June.

AUSTRALIA - A five match ODI series against Australia brings matches to The Kia Oval, The SSE SWALEC in Cardiff, Trent Bridge, Emirates Riverside, and Emirates Old Trafford. Edgbaston will also host a T20 International to round off Australia’s tour.

INDIA - The world’s number one Test side face England in a five-match Test series in this country for only the second time since 1959. The tour starts in July with a 3-match IT20 series followed by a 3-match ODI series.

Edgbaston, Lord’s, Trent Bridge, the Ageas Bowl and The Kia Oval will all host Test Matches against an Indian side which lost 3-1 in their last Test series here in 2014, but defeated England 4-0 in last winter’s Test series on the sub-continent.

Emirates Old Trafford, Cardiff’s SSE SWALEC, and The Brightside Ground, Bristol will host the T20 Internationals with Trent Bridge, Lord’s and Emerald Headingley set to stage One-Day Internationals.

Confirming the schedule, ECB Chief Executive Officer Tom Harrison said:

“A five-Test series against India is at the heart of next summer’s international programme. This is always a much-anticipated contest which attracts a huge following across the globe for the five-day game.

“Test Match cricket has a strong, consistent and passionate following across England and Wales and the seven summer Tests, starting with the Pakistan matches, are sure to attract good crowds

“Alongside these, England’s white-ball contests against India, Australia and Scotland will give a fascinating guide to form ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup, to be staged here in 2019.

“We are pleased to have a very loyal following for all three formats of the game and we expect to attract great crowds across the summer. The universal on-sale date was a great success for the venues and fans last year and we will repeat that again this year. What also stays the same is that we would urge fans to apply early and plan for a big summer of cricket. “

That is what the professional boards do and I am sure,if not already, they will release the full schedule for their domestic cricket as well very soon. Here,we can't expect that from PCB.They even don't know when to play T20 cup now.

Can you clarify to me if there is an agreement between the broadcaster and ECB for the no. of test matches they will be showing per year?Is it 7?

    What about the warm-ups?

August means that pitches will be abrasive and not have much juice compared to May, June or early July even

    Best chance for Kohli

Yes ECB and Sky have a contractual agreement for 7 Tests each summer. It's either a 4-3 or 5-2 split.

As for warm-ups, think that'll be decided nearer the time - they need to release the county schedules first so we know which counties will be available to play in a warmup.

True but the series is between late May/early June which is later than usual for the first Test series of the English summer.

Plus we have a good seam attack who can take advantage of the conditions - England have their own batting frailties.

Well he played during the same time of the year last time around and failed. 134 runs across 10 innings.

He's scored runs everywhere else in the world so it'd be a bit of a downer if he fails in England this time as well.

Looks like Pakistan will serve as the warm-up team for England. The contrast between how both sub-continental teams perform in a test series in the same summer in the same country is going to be interesting!

It should have been a tri series between Aus, England and Pak. Also, obviously would've liked 3 tests, but ECB want to maximize their revenues by playing India.

Shame two tests arent lords and oval, that would be guarenteed 2-0 pakistans series win. Lets hope they Team has 2/3 warm up games before the two tests and not be unprepared like they were when they played new zealand.

Tri-Series don't make much sense from a boards point of view anymore I guess. Less games for your team and your host broadcaster has less games of interest.

    Brainless scheduling of the ODIs.

They should have found a way to hold a quadrangular series between England, Australia, Pakistan and India when you have those three teams touring.

Till a year back I just had it down to coincidence and was sure he would correct it this time around

But if you've watched him it's true that he still has weakness outside the off stump so it's not as straightforward

Sigh. If the spot fixing scandal hadn't happened, maybe Pakistan could've played Tests against India. Maybe there could've been a quadrangular or tai-series involving PAK. Maybe, Maybe, Maybe...

On the other hand, 2 Test series are disappointing, but playing against England in England for Tests just two years after 4 Tests is pretty great.

England always have a small test series and a big one

Next summer India is main event with Pakistan as opener

In 2016 Pakistan was main event with Sri Lanka as opener

This summer due to Champions trophy the traditional format was changed

Dont think spot fixing have anything to do with India-Pakistan games. India can't play Pakistan unless GoI gives green light.

You're both right. I was thinking that since India dead batted the idea of playing in UAE a year or two ago, allegedly because of potential corruption may have been actually true. It was likely an excuse. And the MCC would likely not be generous after specially hosting their matches against Australia because of spot-fixing.

And it's true about the small series, but this year WI are playing 3 Tests and South Africa played 4. I know that India is going to have marquee series of 5 Tests more often vs AUS/ENG but it would've been a nice balance for us to have 3 Tests and India 4.

    Again, just dreaming.

I agree with ur second part. Pakistan should've got 3 test match series. I honestly think 5 test match series is overkill. It takes toll on players body to play 5 test matches on the trot specially those who play all formats.

BCCI should never agree to 5 test match series in future.

The thing I like best about when Pak has a series against ENG or AUS is it's easy to get highlights of all the games (from ecb.co.uk or cricket.com.au).

Surely they can fit in another one as it could be 1-1 after two. India's visit will be the main tour, thank God for the Football World Cup!

India v England should be 4 tests & 5 ODIs rather than 5 tests & 3 ODIs. Cut 1 test and add more ODIs

Lord's and The Oval are ideally suited venues for Asian teams as the pitch is usually quite flat (except for the mamba at Lord's in 2014) and they offer some turn and reverse. So India should look to win there.

Ageas Bowl is pretty flat so your bowlers will have to work hard to get 20 wickets. Boring venue - would've been better to give Old Trafford this Test as there's a larger Indian population in Manchester.

Trent Bridge is the most seam/swing friendly venue in England so that along with Edgbaston where England have a very strong record will be the toughest venues. Both pitches have decent pace and bounce.

All that being said, England may produce five pitches with more grass than Wimbledon after seeing how badly their bowlers fared on flat tracks in India

Pakistan need to play 3 test match series.

Unless Pakistan play 10 - 12 test Matches a year , they will not improve.

BCCI should never agree to 5 test match series in future.
I never thought about the 5 Test overkill because only the Ashes seems to be a 5 test event. Too used to it, but teams do get worn down. It makes more sense to play 3 Test series, just more often. Like SA and AUS sometimes did. At least once they toured each other in the space of 6 months or something. I thought that kept the narrative alive without going to a 5 Test series.

I love Test Cricket and only see ICC tournaments, so I do want there to be Test Cricket most of the year.

And yes, BCCI should probably keep it to 3 or 4 Tests. Want to see Kohli bat outside Aside more often.

And you remind that the Ashes hasn't been alive after the 3rd or 4th Test for most series in the past 20 years.

Shorter series, more tours and fewer SL and IND matches with 3 ODIs and one or two T20Is would keep players fresh and invested.

Again, dreamy and not gonna happen.

Pakistan to play against Kent in a four-day match at The Spitfire Ground in 2018

Kent will welcome Champions Trophy winners Pakistan for a first class match at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence on 28-31 April 2018.

It will be the eleventh time Kent will face Pakistan in a first-class fixture at Canterbury with the tourists triumphant in three of their previous visits.

Head coach Matt Walker said: “We’re delighted to welcome international opposition to Kent again next season.

“It will be a good experience for our players to face some top-level cricketers and provide an entertaining match for our supporters.

“With the Women’s ODI at The Spitfire Ground later in the year, there’s a packed summer of cricket and we can’t wait.”

There is also the added bonus of a four-day match between India A and West Indies A at The County Ground, Beckenham on Wednesday 4 July.

Essex will launch their defence of the Specsavers County Championship next April against Yorkshire at Emerald Headingley – an intriguing first fixture as head coach of the county champions for Anthony McGrath, as it will mean returning to the club where he spent 18 seasons as a player.

“I was sort of expecting it,” said McGrath, recently announced as the successor to Chris Silverwood following his appointment as England fast-bowling coach. “It feels like a long time since I left Yorkshire already, and the first time I went back with Essex last year to Scarborough as assistant coach to Chris, we had a good win.

“It’s a good fixture to get first because Yorkshire will give us a nice marker of where we’re at. We’ve got a tough start moving on to Lancashire at home, Hampshire away and then the return match against Yorkshire, so we’ll have plenty of focus in our preparations.”

The opening round of six matches, which begins six days later than in 2017 on Friday April 13, also includes away games for the two teams promoted from Division Two, with Worcestershire travelling to Hampshire and Nottinghamshire to Lancashire – while Jason Gillespie’s first competitive fixture on his return to county cricket as head coach of Sussex will be against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

Notts Outlaws face another trip north when they begin their bid to retain the Royal London One-Day Cup on May 17 – against Lancashire Lightning at Emirates Old Trafford, meaning their head coach Peter Moores will also be returning to one of his former counties.

The group matches in the Royal London One-Day Cup will again be played in a block early in the season, with the 18 counties split into North and South Groups, and each playing eight matches between May 17 and June 7. The winners of each group will earn a home semi final, with their opponents determined by play-offs between the teams finishing second and third in the two groups on June 14.

The final will be played at Lord’s on Saturday June 30, clearing the way for the Kia Super League and T20 Blast to take centre stage in the domestic game for most of July and August – as announced on tuesday.

Moores, who spent four seasons as head coach of Lancashire, said: “I’ll always have a soft spot for Old Trafford, and it’s a good place for us to start in the Royal London. I’m pleased the competition is being played in a block again next year, because I thought it worked really well in 2017 for players and coaches, giving us something to get our teeth into in the first half of the season. We saw some great cricket, and hopefully it will be the same again in 2018.”

The 2018 fixture list, which is released in full this morning, also features nine day-night Championship matches, involving each of the 18 counties, which will again be played with pink balls – although unlike in 2017, when all nine matches were played in a floodlit round in late June, next summer they will be spread over four rounds, with one game in July when Sussex play Glamorgan, and another in August when Surrey face Lancashire at the Kia Oval.

Alan Fordham, the ECB’s head of cricket operations, said: “With England preparing to play their second day-night Test in Adelaide this weekend, and a third already arranged for Auckland next spring, the ECB’s Cricket Committee has decided that it is important for us to continue providing experience of playing with pink balls in day-night conditions in the Specsavers County Championship.

“Our first floodlit round earlier this year stimulated considerable interest, we have ensured that each of the 18 counties again plays one day-night fixture – and the fact that the matches are spread over three months should allow us to assess some different conditions.”

Essex have also been chosen as the only county opposition for India on their 2018 tour which includes three T20 Internationals, three Royal London One-Day Internationals, and five Tests. The champions will face India in a four-day match at the Cloudfm County Ground in Chelmsford from July 25-28, before the first Test at Edgbaston.

Kent and Northamptonshire will play four-day matches against Pakistan early in the season before their two Tests against England, with Pakistan also playing an historic Test against Ireland in Dublin in May followed by a two-day match against Leicestershire.

Australia are also touring next summer, and they will prepare for a five-match Royal London One-Day Series against England with List A matches against Sussex at the 1st Central County Ground on June 7, and against Middlesex at Lord’s two days later.

England Lions will play two games in Derby, and one each in Leicester and Northampton, in a 50-over Tri-Series against India A and West Indies A, in addition to a first-class four-day match against India A at Worcester from July 16-19.

England Under-19s play two four-day “Youth Tests” against South Africa A at Scarborough and the Emirates Riverside followed by a three-match 50-over series which also takes in South Northumberland CC.
