"My aim is to play for Pakistan again" : Raza Hasan

The quest for a successor to Pakistan’s charismatic spinner Saeed Ajmal seemed to have been a never-ending one. The wizardry with the ball that had helped Pakistan win matches against almost impossible odds is what had set aside Saeed Ajmal as his country’s go-to bowler for a long period of time.

However, his demise as at the international level due to issues with his bowling action brought to the fore the fact that Pakistan did not have a ready-made replacement in the Limited Overs formats which was the need of the hour. Whilst Pakistan were lucky to have found Yasir Shah to take over Ajmal’s role in Tests, the cupboard was relatively bare in the shorter formats and this is where the emergence of a young talent as far back as in 2012 in the shape of Raza Hasan was deemed to be welcome news.

Raza, considered one of the best young talents in the country had made his debut in T20Is in September 2012 but when Ajmal was suspended from bowling in 2014, the young spinner’s skills gained importance as a beleaguered PCB as well as Pakistan fans looked for a ready replacement for the ageing spin wizard. But more bad news was around the corner for Pakistan as the then 22-year-old spinner tested positive for traces of cocaine in a dope test conducted during the Pentangular Cup in Karachi.

Consequently, after a detailed investigation into the matter, Raza Hasan was banned from all forms of cricket for 2 years in May 2015 for the doping offence, effectively putting his nascent career on hold and putting question marks over his cricketing future.

Understandably, the cricketer was devastated by the turn of events but is now thankfully back in action in the current season of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy after the expiry of the ban. In an exclusive interview with PakPassion.net, Raza described his days in wilderness as the toughest days of his life stating that, “It was a long two years out of the game. There was pain, frustration, some anger at myself and desperation to start playing cricket again. Even 2 weeks away from cricket is a long time for a professional cricketer, so two years was very difficult and felt like a very long time.”

A devastating blow such as a 2-year ban at a time when Raza could have been building a permanent place in the Pakistan team could have destroyed many a cricketer but Raza never gave up and continued to persevere as he explained.

“I never lost hope while I was banned and always believed in myself. I trained hard, I kept myself fit and I always had faith that I would make a comeback. I am grateful to National Bank of Pakistan management for allowing me to play for them again and I aim to repay that trust in me with some good and match-winning performances.”

The urge to explain away one’s own weaknesses by putting the onus on others or societal conditions is one that a few would indulge in when put in Raza’s place but the young spinner was in no mood to apportion blame on anyone but himself, “There is nobody to blame, I am to blame for my time away from cricket and I wholeheartedly apologise to my fans and to cricket followers. I let a lot of people down, I let my family down, my team mates, my friends and my coaches and all of the people who have supported me in cricket.“

Raza Hasan’s indomitable spirit was something that caught the eye of the selectors when he first appeared on the international scene in 2012 with his importance to Pakistan becoming very obvious in the World T20 in Sri Lanka during the same year. With the world at his feet due to Ajmal’s problems in 2014, it was therefore a huge shock to all when he was banned in 2015, with many questioning whether he has the ability to make a comeback again.

“My ban came just at a time when I was establishing myself in international cricket and people were talking about me as a bowler with potential and a cricketer who could make a difference for Pakistan. Now, I have to make up for lost time, but I am still young and I believe I can get back to the top of the game once again.”

The painful memories associated with the ban are now history as far as Raza Hasan is concerned as he has busied himself to move on to rebuild his career. In that regard, his participation for NBP in the ongoing Quaid-e-Azam Trophy holds special relevance. With 3 rounds of the Departmental version of Pakistan’s premier 4-day tournament now completed, Raza has emerged as the second-highest wicket-taker with an impressive tally of 23 wickets from just 3 matches. This is obviously great news for Pakistan cricket but it is also a matter of personal pride for the spinner from Sialkot as well.

“The start of the domestic season has been fantastic. I'm really pleased with how it has gone and picking up wickets in the first few matches of the Quaid-e-Azam trophy has really boosted my confidence. I am a bit rusty but that is to be expected having not played any cricket for two years but I feel the ball is coming out of my hand nicely and it's just a case of getting lots of overs under my belt. It's great to be back playing first-class cricket again and I'm really looking forward to a successful season with NBP.”

There is no doubting the fact that the advent of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) has revolutionized the very basis of Pakistan cricket in providing a unique opportunity to showcase skills of Pakistan’s top cricketers. Similar to many other Pakistan cricketers, a spot in one of the 6 franchises for the upcoming third season of the PSL is foremost in Raza’s mind as means of making himself known to selectors and pleasing his fans, as he explained.

“The Pakistan Super League is definitely a target and Aaqib Javed recently spoke to me about the possibility of playing for Lahore Qalandars, but let's see how it goes. Nothing has been agreed yet and let's see if anything happens regarding this, but yes it would be fantastic to play in the PSL as it's now a very famous and popular tournament around the world. It has helped in developing Pakistani cricketers and the chance to play against and alongside the world's best is one that I would dearly love.”

Raza last played for Pakistan in a T20I against New Zealand in Dubai in December 2014. At that time, his elevation to the level of a worthy successor to Saeed Ajmal was being openly discussed as a certainty. The shocking disclosure of Raza’s drugs ban sent a ripple of disappointment amongst his fans and supporters of Pakistan cricket. However, with the expiry of his ban and his recent success in the ongoing Quaid-e-Azam trophy on behalf of NBP, a new sense of optimism is shining through which Raza is determined to use to his and his country’s advantage to eventually find a place in the Pakistan team, “Ultimately my aim is to play for Pakistan again. I would love to wear the Pakistan shirt again. It's every cricketers dream to play for his country and I still have that dream. However, I have to take things one step at a time. I need to do the hard yards once again in domestic cricket, perform in the domestic circuit and ensure I am bowling well and impressing the national selectors. My focus at the moment is to keep adding to the wickets column in domestic cricket and whatever happens after that will be a bonus”, he concluded.

Look at this guy's economy rate in T20Is - incredible.

I think he's best suited at the moment to the limited overs formats, but there is some tough competition there now which wasn't there when he got banned in 2015.

Keep going pick up 55-60 wickets in 8/9 matches in domestic season and selectors will struggle
    to ignore him.
Also depends on Shadabs performance whether Raza is picked for ODIs.

With the time off I'm hoping that he has sorted out his action issues, I remember pre-ban his action was changed because it was causing him to be injured a lot. How is his fielding?

Had all the ingredients to be a great bowler, especially in LOI cricket. Let's hope he comes back with a bang.

I hope Pakistan will allow Shadab to be established as a Spin Bowling Allrounder. He is capable with the bat and would be perfect at No.7. Raza Hasan for me should be the spinner to keep an eye out for to be the next spinner in the national side. For me he's better than Imad Wasim.

I guess Raza Hasan is a bit different to what we have at the moment.

He's a different type of bowler to Imad and Nawaz and is more of a wicket-taking bowler than these guys.

I also feel that Raza could eventually become Pakistan's 2nd spinner supporting Yasir Shah.

He will soon be seen in Pakistan Team.

His FC hundred in QEA Semi-final was a treat to watch. Hope he has got rid of the drugs.

I love his stylish batting. Everybody knows that he is a Canny spinner.

He is a superb spin bowling all-rounder prospect who should be groomed and fast tracked. I love Acha Salman but as a complete package (barring discipline) Raza is better indeed.

Drug cheats even though it was the green stuff- need to be taught thr lesson. Don't bring him back quickly - at least 6 months time - make him water boy - for few series - play with his mind, then bring him back

Raza can bring the ball into the right hander and also can take the ball away from them.

it would not be good if they select Raza in test playing XI ahead of Ashgar... He has been part of the team since last year but has never been given any chance... if Ashgar wasn't good enough what was the fun of having him in the side...
Raza is a good bowler maybe better than Ashgar...
but it would be injustice with Ashgar

Yeah at least their not both leg-spinners cause we tried that against the WI albeit in Tests and it didn't work out despite them being mediocre against spin. But have to agree with @UN talkz that Asghar should be the first replacement even in LOI. Otherwise, his big Pathan hands will not grace the world of cricket.

This one is easiest to explain - RH was banned. He is more experienced, performing well these days and he can bat. Actually, Raja is a better spinner overall. These are selections that can be explained far better than picking both Imad & Nawaz in T20 squad.

Besides, Arthur didn't play Asghar in either of the Test on wickets that probably suits him most, which indicates that he doesn't rate Asghar that high. Ideally, before Asghar, Gohar should have got a go.

Asghar may not be ready for Tests overall but to not play him on pitches were part-timers like Haris Sohail got 3 wickets in an over was a crime. As for Gohar or Raza or Asghar, I would want any of them to replace Imad in the squad. Btw, I read your post on him.

I am talking about Playing XI here.... Raza should definitely be there in the squad, but when selecting playing XI Ashgar should be considered first, bcz he has waited a whole year for that.

Regarding Ashgar isn't good enough, i said earlier why did they select him then and persisted with him..... They should have let him play domestic instead. He missed majority of domestic matches bcz he was with national team... although warming the bench.

Key is weather Ul Haq rates him or not. I am not sure if Arthur can see his utility (the guy played 3 pacers and 1 spinner in UAE for a 6-1-4 combination) - it has to be Ul Haq.

RH is good enough to play for a decade in 3 formats, but he needs proper chance. PAK hardly plays A tours, so we have to believe whatever stats we can get from domestics - and go with what we can see - at this moment, it'll be injustice if Amin, RHasan and Saad Ali doesn't get a call for NZ squad. And, they are at perfect age to be part of the team, to serve for a decade or more.

Not playing Asghar was a mistake by both Arthur & Inzi. What I can understand is that Arthur didn't have the confidence to play him, then Ul Haq should have discussed it with head coach & tour selection team before finalizing his squad. PAK lost both Test to this SRL because the tour party wasn't ready to play another spinner with Shah, when there were two on bench.

He won't play there. Micky isn't playing 2nd spinner in UAE in September- what's the chance of playing 2 in U.K. In may June?

True but Yasir getting injured is always an unfortunate reality especially since his back injury was rushed to get him back to bowling 35-40 overs on Day 1. Yasir won't be that effective in seaming conditions as evident in NZ. So, either Mickey drops him for an all-rounder such as Yamin or puts in a spinner that can effectively spin the ball in both directions like Raza.

If one spinner to play, it should always be a leggi. If not Yasir, it should be Irfan or Mir. PAK squad to U.K. should have 2 leggi, rather than a finger spinner.

He must be the top spinners I assume?

I wonder if he has worked on his fitness and fielding. In the current regime, if those 2 are not met you will not be getting a place in the starting XI. Especially in LOIs.

He got a very harsh penalty considering it was a recreational drug.

In any case I hope he gets another chance - there's def some mystery to His bowling. Would be handy in T20s and possibly ODIS.

repeat offender and clearly has/had an addiction problem

initially i think he got 6 months but was caught again in a hotel room with some well lets say "friends"

Coming to the present I think he has a great chance of usurping Imad, especially if Raza continues to perform with the bat as well.

Not that it should matter though, In Faheem and Shadab you have batsmen who have heigher celings than Imad, weaking our batting a tiny bit to get another superior bowler in worth it

Funnily enough, he probably isn't far off from getting selected with Zafar injured and Asghar failing to impress. Irfan will get the nod but then he's probably next in line. Usama is still too raw.

He is repeated offender and should be kept away from the national team for good . One of the main reasons of repeated fixing scandals in our cricket is that we do not impose life ban on the convicted players , and the message goes that if a player is even caught, he can come back in team after a few years ban . While the other boards treat such cases very strictly , example is of sreesanth .Pak should not select such criminals again for the national team who have tarnished the image of our country at international level . They may be allowed to play meaningless t-20 tournaments or first class cricket at maximum.

How is using recreational drugs analogous to fixing? Pakistani fans seriously have some next level logic that is devoid of any reality. Kid indulged in narcotics that is as prevalent as smart phones. Get over it. No cricketing board or sporting body has handed out life bans for using narcotics...where do you even come up with such stuff?
