Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur extends contract till 2019 World Cup [Update Post #25]

The Pakistan Cricket Board has extended national team’s head coach Mickey Arthur and the rest of the support staff’s contract until the 2019 cricket World Cup, to be held in England.

“Contracts of the head coach and other support staff have been extended till the World Cup. The only change that can be made in the management is that of the manager,” an official told PTI before leaving for Sri Lanka.

“The PCB will review whether to retain former Test batsman Talat Ali as manager or make a new appointment after the ongoing series against Sri Lanka,” he said.

Arthur had joined the Pakistan team in May, 2016 before the England tour on a two-year contract, which was to be reviewed by the PCB.

The official said that after Pakistan’s unexpected victory in the ICC Champions Trophy, the board had decided to extend the contracts.

“It makes no sense to make changes now as the next important assignment is the World Cup,” he said.

The PCB had also probed into the allegations made by Test batsman Umar Akmal against Arthur and found that the head coach didn’t abuse anyone.

Umar had alleged that Arthur abused him after an altercation at the National Cricket Academy in August, which led to the batsman being banned for three matches, a fine of one million rupees and a two-month suspension on issuance of NOCs for foreign leagues.

“Arthur told Umar that only contracted players were being trained at the NCA when Umar raised the issue of Salman Butt (having nets at the NCA). The head coach told him to focus on his own fitness and form. Arthur didn’t say anything out of ordinary,” the official said.

PCB’s plan to file BCCI compensation claim not on ICC’s agenda

The Pakistan Cricket Board’s plan to file a compensation claim with the ICC against its Indian counterpart (BCCI) is unlikely to see the light of day in the near future.

An official of the PCB told PTI that the Board’s plan to file a compensation claim is not on the agenda of the ICC (International Cricket Council) executive board meeting in Auckland early next week.

“No, it is not on the agenda and if anything Pakistan will put up this issue for finalisation at the next ICC meeting which will be held after Auckland,” he said.

READ | Sunil Gavaskar slams Indian cricket selectors for Ajinkya Rahane’s T20 omission

“The reason for this is, the PCB is still finalising the claim after continuing consultations with a legal firm in London.”

The PCB chairman Najam Sethi and Chief Operating Officer Subhan Ahmad will be attending the meeting.

Asked if it is correct that the PCB planned to file a compensation claim of around USD 70 million for two home series that India didn’t play against Pakistan in 2014 and 2015, the official said: “The PCB will most probably file its claim with the ICC at the next meeting which will be held after Auckland.

“After which the world governing body has to appoint a three or four member disputes resolution committee to hear out the case.”

While filing the compensation claim, the PCB would ask the BCCI to show proof and evidence that it did not get the permission of its government to play a bilateral series with Pakistan even at neutral venues.

“Pakistan’s contention is that the BCCI must show through documentation and evidence that indeed it did try to seek clearance from the government to play the series with Pakistan at neutral venues but their government refused to give the permission,” he said.

“Our insistence is simple that India’s refusal to play us has cost us lot of money and they have even backed out of the MoU signed with us in 2014 to play six bilateral series between 2015 and 2023,” the official added.

The official said that the legal firm in the United Kingdon has assured the PCB that the MoU constituted a legally binding agreement and it could claim compensation from the BCCI.

    Correct decision

Good luck. The ODI team is showing improvement and our Test prospects right now are so much in the pits that it wouldnt make sense to threaten to derail our ODI progress for an attempt to rejuvenate a flailing Test team. There is no guarantee that anybody else would be able to sufficiently manage to stop Arthur's bungling of the Test team transition.

Excellent decision. Backed him from day 1.

Too many people with their own agendas wrote him off when he was appointed, and some continue to do so unfortunately.

Mixed feelings, Mickey has made many stupid decisions in his short stint so far, including persisting with Shan Masood after he was dumped for tours Downunder by the selectors, persisting with Wahab Riaz despite him being our worst bowler in recent memory, making Yasir Shah bowl legstump line for most of Australia tests, playing just one spinner in a test in UAE, among others.

The progress of ODI team is decent though.

His sad and tragic demise boosted his legacy. Happens in these situations, I know it’s a cruel thing to say but it is what it is

Woolmer had to deal with too many idiots and dramaybaaz like Akhtar, Afridi, Yousuf, Razzaq, Asif etc. With a more professional setup he'd have gotten a lot more done.

Arthur has been somewhat fortunate he hasn't had as many shady characters in the dressing room.

Slow down and buck up. He's working with a transitioning roster. He had the luxury of Misbah and Younis for his first year and a half in the test side.

That doesn't mean anything when you're playing only one spinner in the UAE. Mickey and Sarfraz are also the ones who demoted Azhar to number three just to accommodate in Shan Masood. Babar Azam needs to be gotten rid of. Asad Shafiq needs to be gotten rid of.

Mickey + Sarfraz are utterly clueless.
