Sri Lanka climbs up to #6 in the Test rankings as Pakistan drops down to #7

Thirteen months after lifting the prestigious ICC Test Championship mace for topping the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings, Pakistan have plummeted to seventh in the latest Test team rankings, which were updated following the conclusion of its home series against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka not only won the series 2-0 but handed Pakistan only its second whitewash in a home series (Pakistan lost all three Tests against Australia in 2002-03).

The result meant Sri Lanka has lifted from 90 points to 94 points, while Pakistan has dropped from 93 points to 88 points.

Sri Lanka now trails fifth-ranked Australia (97 points) by three points, while Pakistan is ahead of eighth-ranked Windies (75 points) by 13 points.

Sri Lanka’s next Test assignment is against number-one ranked India (125 points), when the two sides will go head to head in a three-Test series starting in Kolkata on 16 November. Pakistan’s next red-ball match is against Ireland in April, which will be followed by two away Tests in England.

Meanwhile, South Africa has gained one point while Bangladesh has conceded two points following the conclusion of their series, which Faf du Plessis’s side won by 2-0. South Africa is now second on 111 points (six points ahead of third-ranked England) while Bangladesh is ninth on 72 points (three points behind Windies).

There is not much to gain for a No.1 ranked team playing No.6 or 7, even a single draw game will hurt our points.

Only 2 points to be gained - and it takes a 3-0 whitewash. If we win 2-0 We remain at 125. anything less we lose points

Gets very difficult to move up after about 115-120.

Its going to be tough for the batsmen and even for the bowlers in SA. Might want to consider Ishant for this tour bcz of his height (only factor), it would be great if he has been performing well in domestic.

The way it looked and the way Duplesis emphasized on height of his bowlers seems like Shami and Yadav would be needing support from a tall bowler.

I checked last time few hours back, that we were 8th, though not sure how it was possible after that "show" in SAF. But, looks like something wasn't right that time - either the table or my eyes.

    Nope. Mistake.

We have never reached 8th in Tests. Real cat and mouse game going on teh past 12 months with Windies...every time we are sure to leap past them, they somehow pull of a huge upset win (twice vs PAK, once in ENG).

We will have to work hard so we can beat Sri Lanka 2-0 at home come January. Should be possible if we pick the right side.

    1. Tamim

    9. A Leggi - the best available one, don't know who - if not, have to stick with Taijul.
    10. Mustafiz
    11. Taskin (Al Amin might get called again)

No point appointing a 30 years old Captain and 31 years old deputy - vice Captain must be at least 6 years younger than his on field boss. Of the 2, I like Shakib, because I'll never appoint a specialist batsman as Captain - most of them are selfish, short sighted & narrow minded - don't know how to use bowlers, neither sense the 50-50 situations to attack. If he is opener, he'll use his bit of every power, trying to ensure that he can see the 2nd ball on the Test wicket, every time.

And making a knob head WK Captain reflects the SAF tour .......

    Agree with saif.
But liton?! A TTF?! Why not anamul or nazmul as wk?
Why not shohid in place of taskin or alu?

I think, ZIM can help us by winning 1-0 or draw 1-1 with WI before that. Unlikely, but possible, particularly with few Kolpak returning. Probably beating SRL 2-0 takes us closer to PAK than WI, but I'll wait for that. SRL has found a nice combination & they will use Mathews instead of 3rd pacer in this team (I just noticed that they beat PAK 2-0 without Angelo!!!!!!).

It's time ICC comes with two tier system for tests where bottom 5 teams should only play with each other. Will make for more interesting matches like this test and spare us the one sided encounters like India - Sri Lanka and SA- Bangladesh.

Post the retirement of Younis and Misbah, Pakistan side has become rubbish to say the least.

It was absurd to see posters criticising them for staying. Now there is no one who could play any impactful inning for their team with the bat.

Unfortunately, they are losing even in UAE post the retirement of the famously renowned UAE khan.

It's the batsmen that are picked based on nepotism and favouritism such mediocrity will always follow and one day someone like Shan Masood will give an interview saying "I did well I deserve another chance".
Look at the batsmen Misbah picked or groomed during his tenure Hafeez Masood Aslam Malik Shafiq Ayub Dogar? Azhar out of which only Azhar has become above average that too at a s/r that hinders more than helps the team mostly.
Having Younus who was world class supported by a few others and a decent spinner in Yasir preceded by Ajmal helped win some matches in UAE eventually the iffy selections were found out and this is the end result.

As a Pakistan fan this is not good to see but no one can argue with it. We lost 2-0 in NZ and then 3-0 in Australia. Being number 1 was a very good feeling but we have been awful in tests in the last year or so.

Most teams these days are awful away from home.

But the performance has gone down even in UAE post the retirement of UAE Khan who was bashed for being so great in Asia.

If there was a two-tier system in place then we would have fought like cornered tigers and wouldn't have lost the series.

    2. Bottom 7

Ups and downs are part of every sport and thats what makes it interesting. Up for Pakistan's test team is on its way so just sit tight.

Yes, the challenge will have to be met. If India is a real #1, then we should still be 115+ after the round of foreign tours are over.
