Ronaldo is going to win this by a margin of huge votes

So far, in the evaluation period, Real have won three key trophies: Champions League, La Liga & Club World Cup. Let’s analyze his contribution in each of these wins.

In the Champions League, Ronaldo is the top most goal scorer (12) and assist maker (5). 2016–17 marks the fifth year in a row that he has scored 10 plus goals. The only player to do so.

In La Liga, Ronaldo has scored 25 goals and 6 assists in 29 appearances. Of these goals, 14 goals have been scored in the last eight games of the season when the title race was very close.

In the Club World Cup, Ronaldo was the top scorer too, scoring four goals which also included a hat-trick in the finals. He also played a crucial role in helping Portugal qualify for WC 2018.

To sum it up, Ronaldo has been very decisive for Real Madrid, stepping up whenever the team needed him.

Before the Champions League final, People were saying that Buffon should win the Ballon d’Or if Juventus wins, which is kind of absurd. I respect Buffon greatly, but he has had a great defence in front of him. Winning the Serie A has also been a cakewalk for Juve and they could've done it even with Mignolet as their keeper.

So simply if not ronaldo messi was the best player last season its not buffon

    CLUB + COUNTRY

    Messi: 48 games, 46 goals, 11 assists

    Cristiano: 44 games, 42 goals, 11 assists

With context, this is a no-brainer. Ronaldo takes it easily.

And @ 30 nominees. Why do they even waste their time?

Messi has been the best across the year and showed up BIG TIME when his country needed him most.

Goal down after 40 seconds and facing elimination, he literally carried Argentina to the WC.

He is without a shadow of a doubt the best in the world and should get his 6th.

Ronaldo has not individually been better than Messi this year and you know it. He showed up for 4 games and scored goals (a lot of which were offside) in them. He doesn't have half the impact Messi has and has been nowhere as consistent across the year.

How many of those goals were offside?

Messi has been carrying weaker sides, Ronaldo has the luxury of a world class midfield to provide for him even then he was outscored by Messi who played a deeper role.

A lot of those goals are against Andorra and Faroe Islands as well.

Suarez and Neymar were poor and didn't cash in on a lot of easy chances Messi created.

If you really think Ronaldo deserves it after seeing the two play, you do not have a clue.

Mate, he showed up for 4 games and scored a fair few offside goals. This was probably Messi's best year in a long time,.

Why is it the gap between the two of them has only grown this year? More and more a considering Messi the greatest and the best in the world yet Ronaldo should win the Ballon d'or lmao?

He put on a damn clinic tonight after going down early in 1 goal in probably the second biggest game of his career. If they lost today, there was speculation he would retire. He stepped up big time and scored 3 fantastic goals and literally carried his team to the WC on his own. Then there's the last game against Peru where he was creating everything for his team and his side was incapable of putting any of them away.

If you watched these games, you would know there is no question who the best is and who should get the Ballon d'or.

I think Messi is the better player overall and would prefer Messi to win it but Ronaldo winning the trophies he has this year, it gives him the edge.

If the award is for the best individual player of the year - Messi gets it, no question.

Shouldn't be about trophies, you can't just show up for 4 games and be anonymous for the good chunk of the rest of it. Before his golden run in the CL, I heard plenty of Real Madrid fans wanting to sell him because they thought he was declining and becoming a liability to the team.

I get what your saying but I think it plays a big part in people voting.

Also don't agree with those fans who wanted CR sold. His job now is to be a number 9 as he doesn't have that burst of pace that he once had. So he's doing a good job of playing the number 9 role. He would be difficult to replace.

I'm a Messi fan but this is Ronaldo's year.

10 goals in the QF+SF+Final in the Champions League won't be ignored.

Same happened in 2014-2015. Ronaldo came up close statistically but Messi took home Ballon d'Or because his team won when it mattered.

    The precedent is already there.

This is the copy of duplicate post i have posted in another thread

The season 2014–15, Ronaldo scored a whopping 48 goals in the league, that includes a goal against barcelona in both legs in the league campaign whereas Messi had none. He scored in both legs against Juventus in the semis of Champions league, even though it wasn’t enough to make real madrid progress. However, he was the joint top scorer in champions league along with neymar and messi despite playing one less game. He finished the season with the most goals in that season and claimed the golden boot. But, lost to Messi in Balon Dor race. Why? He had no trophy to show for.. that’s how the dynamics of Ballon Dor

And about last season why ronaldo didn't netted as much as mess is because of several reasons firstly injury played a huge part.He started the season on the sidelines due to his 2-month knee injury. Ronaldo is a 32 years old who has been suffering knee issues since 2014, so his recovery is bound to take longer than usual. It was following this injury when Ronaldo was said to have “the worst period of his career”.

Secondly In La Liga, Ronaldo missed 9 games, 5 of which came against bottom 5 teams, where he could definitely improve his goal contribution average. He was also clearly instructed to not put much effort into games against weaker teams in order to save his energy to the decisive end of the season.

In La Liga, Ronaldo proved particularly decisive in the high-pressure final month, scoring 6 against Valencia, Celta, Sevilla and Malaga. Overall, Ronaldo’s goals and assists won Real an 18 points in that month, heck the way he literally humiliated the mighty atletico defence by scoring a hatrick away from home is prodigious.

In the Champions league KO stages, apart from a penalty goal and 2 or 3 good chances against Juventus, Messi did nothing significant in 4 games against PSG and Juventus. In fact, if it wasn’t for Neymar’s outstanding performance against PSG, Messi would’ve exited the tournament in the round of 16.

On the other hand, Ronaldo took decisiveness to a whole another level. No one has ever scored 10 in UCL KO stages in one season. He did it in the 5 games starting in the QF against Bayern & Neuer, Atleti & Oblak, and Juve & Buffon. Overall, Ronaldo had 12 goal contributions (goals+assists) in the KO phase this season, which is equal to bigger than the number any MSN member had over the last 3 seasons (14/15–16/17 : Messi : 10 - Suarez : 12 - Neymar : 12).

That’s beyond words like “incredible” or “insane”.

Champions League was Ronaldo’s show this season more than any Champions League was any player’s show any season, ever.

So to sums it up as you said there is actually no comparison in terms of individual performances let alone overall impact its ronaldo all the way hands down

@Protea Fan if Ronaldo has been so great this year, why are there more people calling Messi the best in the world and GOAT now than there was last year?

There is no debate, it only exists because of Ronaldo's PR team. He's never really been in the same league as Messi as a talent.

Then there was this which happened in Ronaldo's own backyard a few weeks back

Giving Ronaldo the Ballon d'or would be like giving Fakhar Zaman the ODI batsmen of the year over Kohli because of his performances in the CT.

    How silly would that be.

If Ronaldo had been more consistent and not shown up for 4 game this season andn scored legitimate goals, it could be fair. But Messi has been the best for 99% of this year and delivered big time after being a goal down in the second biggest match of his entire career and carried Barcelona this year.

We wouldn't even be having this discussion if Ronaldo was a little less pretty looking and didn't have his PR machine convincing his fan boys that he's as good as Messi.

Ronaldo also only played 29 La Liga games, if he had played the full season and wasn't rested, I would probably see an argument for him winning it.

You can't really hold the offside goals against him to be honest, but it should definitely not count towards him either.

Ronaldo and Messi are both clutch players for their own respective club and country, but I just see Messi as the more consistent player who's had another fantastic year.

It's a bit off-topic, but I would feel sorry for Messi as he has to play with a declining Suarez, Iniesta, Busquets and Alba, while also playing alongside some terrible players like Digne, Gomes and Aleix Vidal, but to be honest he has so much power at Barcelona that his ego is massive.

Even Xavi said that if he didn't pass the ball to Messi enough for his liking, he'd get annoyed.

I just hope he doesn't go to Manchester City, that would probably be the worst thing to happen to Football in a while.

Ronaldo will win his 5th award and draw level with Messi. It's fitting that these two end up with five awards each.

Aftee this year, however, someone else really needs to step up and win it. Getting a little boring.

Carried Argentina to the WC? LOL Lewandowski carried Poland to the World Cup by scoring 16 goals and carried Bayern to League title as well. Messi carried Argentina? It's not Panama or Bolivia - Argentina have multiple WC players for most positions.

You keep barking about legitimate goals. Which goals were offside? Yes the one goal against Bayern was clearly offside, but the pass he got from Marcelo was very close and every season there are many of those kind of cases. Stop whining and mentioning offside goals when in reality it was just the one against Bayern out of 12 incredible historical goals.

This is Messi offside goal this season against Espanyol:

Thanks for proving you don't watch Argentina's matches. Those players are good for club but crumble when playing for Argentina. Augera, Higuaín and Icardi can't even make the team regardless of how well they play for their club side.

Mate, EVERYONE knows who is the best and who was the best across the year.
More games in CL because they got knocked out in quarter final hahahahah. Messi scored all his goals against Celtic and Mönchen gladbach who? When it mattered he went missing unlike Ronaldo.

Stop making excuses. They made it to the Final of WC 2014 all thanks to Di Maria. Messi went missing again in difficult games. Got man of tournament that everyone laughed at hahahah.

I hate this Messi-Ronaldo debate.....Half of Pakistan becomes football fan before EL CLASSICO and dont give a shizz what happens in football after that.

Back on topic I really hope Neymar wins the Football Ballon d'Or just for the sake of it

Messi was involved in 47.4% of Argentina's goals even though he missed 8 qualifing games. At one point, their win percentage in qualifiers dropped 69% without Messi. If that's not called carrying I don't know what is. Also you need to realise that a good team on paper doesn't do anything if you can't do it on the pitch, and without Messi, Argentina would not have qualified.

As expected, Ronaldo takes home the first award.

    He'll take Ballon d'Or too.

Fifa player of the year awards were a joke. No way is Buffon a better goal keeper than De Gea or Neuer at this stage of his career. Iniesta over Kante and De Bruyne is a joke .

Why don’t you elaborate?Since you apparently possess more knowledge about football than journalists and national level footballers themselves?
