Field Hockey : Asia Cup 2017

    https://arysports.tv/pakistan-thrash-bangladesh-7-0-2/

Pakistan builds a magnificent performance to crush Bangladesh by 7-0 in their open fixture at the 10th men’s edition of Asia Cup hockey tournament.

In the beginning of the match, green shirts constructed dominance against Bangladesh.

Abubakar Mahmood was flawless in his drag-flick and scored three brilliant goals in the 18th, 41st and 50th minute, while Ammad Butt and Arslan Qadir pushed two goals each which helped Pakistan seal their opening match of the tournament.

Pakistan led 1-0 at half-time and came with enthusiasm to extend maximum thumping to the hosts with collective efforts.

The eight-team tournament will serve as a platform for 2018 World Cup as the winner will directly qualify for the marquee event, which will be held from November 24 in India.

Pakistan will take on Japan in its second match on April 13.

7-0 is a good margin. Is Pakistan's team improving or does Bangladesh have a really bad team?

ISLAMABAD: Olympian Naveed Alam is optimistic Pakistan will at least make it to the final of the Asia Cup following the national team’s emphatic 7-0 win over Bangladesh on Wednesday.

“I think they will reach the final at least,” Naveed told Dawn on Wednesday. “That shouldn’t be a problem for this team.”

Currently serving as Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) director development, Naveed was here to brief the Senate Standing Committee on Inter-provincial Coordination (IPC) on the national team’s poor performance during the last three tournaments.

But the committee refused to listen to him after expressing their displeasure at PHF president retired Brig Khalid Khokar and secretary Shahbaz Ahmed not turning up at the meeting with the duo in Karachi to conduct the Nishan-i-Haider hockey tournament which ended on Tuesday.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Naveed added that Pakistan has a good talent pool which needs polishing.

“We need to provide them adequate facilities and training opportunities,” he said, adding that as per law of the country all districts are bound to spend two percent of their total budget on sports. “There needs to be investment at grassroots level.”

To a query, he said that international hockey league will be organised in April and steps are being taken for smooth holding of this mega event.

DHAKA: Pakistan and Japan played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in their Pool A encounter here at the Hero Asia Cup 2017 held at Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium on Friday.

Goals for Pakistan were scored by Mohammad Arslan Qadir (16’) and Mohammad Umar Bhutta (50’) while Kenta Tanaka (22’) and Heita Yoshihara (29’) scored for the Japanese.

Both teams started the match aggressively as they looked to get the lead early on, however, the defence was solid in the first quarter for either team which saw them end the first quarter goalless.

The second quarter saw three goals being scored as Pakistan were awarded a penalty corner in the 16th minute which was well converted through some lovely team-work. Captain Mohammad Irfan flicked the ball fiercely towards Mohammad Arslan Qadir, who then deflected the ball towards the goal to give Pakistan the lead.

However, Japan made a comeback into the match as they produced two field goals to take a 2-1 lead going into half-time. First, it was Kenta Tanaka who scored Japan’s first goal of the match as he ran into the box with the ball, beat two defenders and shot at goal which was saved by Pakistan’s goalkeeper Mazhar Abbas, but Tanaka was quick to score off the rebound in the 22nd minute.

The second goal for Japan was scored by Heita Yoshihara who picked up the ball on the right flank, cut inside and sent the ball past Pakistan’s goalkeeper Mazhar Abbas into the back of the net in the 29th minute.

Japan showed good defensive skills in the third quarter to keep out Pakistan’s efforts of equalizing the score as the teams finished the third quarter with the score 2-1 in Japan’s favour. But it was the fourth quarter where Pakistan stepped up their attacking efforts as they looked to get the all-important equalizer.

With 10 minutes remaining on the clock, Pakistan’s Mohammad Arslan Qadir picked up the ball and dribbled past the Japanese defenders parallel to the base-line and passed the ball in front of the goal which was tapped in by Mohammad Umar Bhutta in the 50th minute to equalize the scores at 2-2.

Both the teams continued to put their opposition under pressure and put the defenders to test, however, neither team were able to make effective forays as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

After beating Japan 5-1 in their opening match, the Manpreet Singh-led side mauled minnows Bangladesh 7-0 on Friday.

Two easy wins garnered, a confident India would face its toughest test in the event when it takes on arch-rivals Pakistan in the much-anticipated clash of the Asia Cup hockey tournament, in Dhaka on Sunday.

Rated as favourites to win the title, the Indians have been impressive so far, beating Japan and hosts Bangladesh comprehensively in their opening two Pool A matches.

After beating Japan 5-1 in their opening match, the Manpreet Singh-led side mauled minnows Bangladesh 7-0 on Friday.

Pakistan, on the other hand, have had a mixed outing so far. While they thrashed Bangladesh 7-0 in their campaign-opener, they were held to a 2-2 draw by Japan in their next match.

India are currently sitting atop Pool A with six points from two wins while Pakistan are placed second with four points.

With two wins, India are comfortably through to the Super 4 stage of the tournament and the Sjoerd Marine-coached side would be hoping to finish the pool stages with an all-win record.

In the first two games, the Indians have showcased beautiful one-touch hockey and used both flanks to create numerous scoring chances.

What is heartening is that the Indians have scored some excellent field goals but a matter of concern for them is their penalty corner conversion rate.

Against Bangladesh India earned as many as 13 penalty corners but could make use of just two.

Less than a month into his new job replacing the legendary Roelant Oltmans, tomorrow’s game can be considered for coach Marijne biggest challenge of his short tenure.

History suggests that any Indo-Pak hockey duel is full of not just excitement and drama but also frayed tempers.

Pakistan might not be the most potent force in world hockey presently but when it comes to playing against India, the intensity touches a new level.

So come tomorrow, the Indians will have to control their emotions when they take the turf. Any lapse in concentration would spoil all the good work they have done so far in the tournament.

Of late, India have dominated arch-foes Pakistan in hockey, the latest being the 6-1 thrashing in a 5th-8th place classification match of the Hero Hockey World League Semi-Final in London in June.

That loss dented Pakistan’s hopes of booking a berth at the next year’s World Cup to be held in Bhubaneswar and the Pakistanis would be desperate for revenge.

With four world titles and three Asia Cup titles (1982, 1985, 1989), the 14th-ranked Pakistan have been blighted by poor management and security concerns.

But with a new management in place, Pakistan have recalled some experienced players in the squad and this could make things better rather than worse.

For Pakistan it is a big game as a loss can dent their Super 4 chances as Japan is expected to win hands down against Bangladesh in the other Pool A match of the day.

Pakistan hockey is nowhere near what it used to be, a real Shame actually, hockey is the national sport as well.

Yes Sohail Abbas is a legend, he has scored close to 350 goals which is most by any player. I think he last played some 4-5 years ago.

LAHORE: Pakistan face Malaysia in their opening match of the super four round in the Asia Cup hockey tournament at the Maulana Bhashani Stadium in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Though the head-to-head Asia Cup record favours Pakistan who have won eight out of nine matches (remaining one being draw), Malaysia this time around are likely to pose a stiff challenge to the Green-shirts.

In this event, an improved Malaysia side topped pool ‘B’ (winning all three preliminary-round matches securing nine points) and one should not forget the fact that in the last World Hockey League Malaysia were the only Asian side that qualified for the semi-finals.

They have also made next year’s World Cup. Malaysia qualified for the semi-finals after upsetting India. Malaysia, who have hosted the Asia Cup four times — more than any other country — have had just one podium finish in the Asia Cup, bronze in 2007. They ended fourth no less than five times.

Pakistan, on the other hand, have been the Asia Cup champions thrice — winning the first three editions in 1982, 1985 and 1989. While India have lifted the cup twice, in 2003 and 2007.

The Pakistan-Malaysia match on Wednesday starts at 2:00pm Pakistan time.

In the other super-four round match on Wednesday, India face South Korea.

Currently, India lead pool ‘A’ with 9 points followed by Pakistan (4, points). In pool ‘B’, toppers Malaysia are followed by second-placed South Korea (six points).

On Thursday, Pakistan will be up against South Korea and on Saturday Pakistan will once again lock horns with arch-rivals India. The top two teams from the super round round will meet in the final on Sunday. The bottom two sides will play for the third position on the same day.

The teams which have finished third and fourth in pool ‘A’ and pool ‘B’ will figure in the classification matches for fifth to eighth places.

Good observation... I used to be a big hockey fan and used to diligently follow it but now cannot even name a single current hockey player. Is Shakeel Abbasi still around? Who is the captain?

Not sure if this thread qualifies or a separate thread to analyze or debate on what's going on with Pakistan hockey ?? Is it that the people don't care or watch and hence no funds carrying through ? Or just that cricket is the much more popular sport and therefore not enough hockey talent pouring in to make a career out of it ?? If this sport continues to dies it is indeed a sad day indeed...

I think Asia Cup isn't even being broadcasted in Pakistan. That should tell you about the level of interest.

India didn't play that well in this tournament, really thought they were on top of their game.European and Australian teams will be much harder to defeat at this rate.

Where we really stand will be clear after the world hockey league final.

We are not the top few in the world right now, but there has been a steady improvement over the last 5 years. Anther 5 years and I would expect us to be challenging the medals spot in Olympics and WC.

The improvement was good till we fired the coach, saying we need to go to next level, almost like Sardar Singh's revenge.

Its not just the coach. the coach can only do so much, and he can only do that with the quality of players given to him. I was talking more about the system. With the money slowly flowing into the hockey league, we will start seeing consistent performances because the pool of players will improve in general.
