No space for bias on grounds of religion, ethnicity, sects in Pak Army: ISPR

KARACHI: The army is a national institution where every Pakistani can serve irrespective of his or her religion.

The assertion came from Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor, the director general of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), when he was responding to a question during a television interview on Thursday night.

“We have heard about that retired Capt Mohammad Safdar’s demand,” Maj Gen Ghafoor told Kamran Khan of Dunya TV about the former’s speech in the National Assembly.

“Let me tell you that the Pakistan Army is a national army... It’s not true that army can be joined only by Muslims because we are a Muslim country... We proudly say that the army is an institution, which is the best example of national integration.”

The ISPR director general went on to say that there was no space for bias on the grounds of religion, ethnicity and sects and there were a number of non-Muslims who were currently serving in the armed forces.

“When we put on the uniform we are a Pakistani soldier only, irrespective of our religion, irrespective of our province and irrespective of our clan,” he said.

“Right now, we have Christians, Sikhs and Ahmadis [in the army]. So if someone says ban them... Well, I would say that there is a lawmaking body. And if it brings any such law then this point should be discussed.”

While speaking in the National Assembly, Captain Safdar, a former serviceman, had said that he wanted to bring a resolution in the legislature calling for a “ban on recruitment of Qadianis [Ahmadis] in the armed forces”.

Elaborating on the army’s recruitment process for Muslims, Maj Gen Ghafoor said: “Every Muslim officer recruited in the army files a certificate in which he declares that he’s not an Ahmadi and believes in Khatm-i-Nubuwwat.”

Capt Safdar might have forgotten, but he too gave that undertaking when he joined the army, added the ISPR chief.

It doesn't mean much..even our right wingers in india love soldiers who are muslims. One gets concession from bias if one gets certified as patriotic.

Can the military also expand on its newfound anti-sectarianism by taking on LEJ and their sectarian thugs who've been killing Shias with impunity for many years now ?

All talks nothing really changes on ground level.. Discrimination on basis of religion/sects will continue to happen..

Also worth noting couple of his comments where he said a Muslim has to give certificate saying he's not ahmedi and saying if a law like this comes it needs to be discussed (rather than out roghtedly pointing out there is no place for such a law).. I mean Pakistan army takes on government on all matters so the least he could have done was put rightedly pointed out that army's stand is we will never let this happen..

Not in 'army' where merit is more important. We got many hindu/sikh/christian/ahmedi officers. Talking about sect and religion we even had a shia Army chief and a hindu Supreme Court Chief Justice of Pakistan. (We don't even claim to be a secular state)

    A serving sikh army officer...

If you are close relative of any live/dead military person, then there is different merit for you.

I meant at the basic ground level for normal people like you and me.. Even in army there might be instances of favouritism based of religion at lower levels which no one would get to know as it won't make news..

Shame on You ISPR for your Dual Chameleon **.

Few months ago when General briefed media about Sacrifices from Minorities He failed to name & number 10 Ahmadi Muslim Officers.

Failed to even mention that the only General who attained Martyrdom during War was Ahmadi Muslim.

    Zia-eeat continues.

Hate to sound like a broken record but prove it. Target LeJ like TTP was targeted. They're the single greatest sectarian force in Pakistan and by far the deadliest. Let's talk about your institutions intolerance for intolerance when you no longer support and protect them.

I'm sorry to say but LEJ and Hafiz Saeed are not just terrorist organizations. Even though I agree both have no room in our country. Hafiz Saeed and LEJ and are involved with a lot of politicians, NGO's and powerful businessmen of the country, hence they have become untouchable.
