I'd keep an eye on this series - Zimbabwe will be full of confidence after their performances on the Sri Lanka tour whilst Taylor and Jarvis have returned to the side. Jarvis especially is an important selection as Zimbabwe have been desperate for wicket-takers. They're batting deep looking at that lineup.

West Indies also have renewed belief after the England tour and their heroics at Headingley.

These are two bottom ranked teams who've suffered for many years but now they have some grounds for optimism and hope.

This should be a really interesting series with a strengthened Zimbabwe. Taylor and Jarvis add huge value to this side. So far, they are bowling beautifully.

Good for cricket if Zimbabwe rise again.

Jarvis and Mpofu have bowled with discipline with the new ball. Conditions are overcast and there has been a bit of movement.

Zimbabwe could've done with a proper third seamer here. Mire though has looked more threatening when he pitches the ball up.

Masakadza is a decent option too. But yes, definitely missing the third seamer here. Only if Chatara was ever fit. He's such a good bowler for Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe are actually looking like a decent side now. Masakadza, Taylor, Williams, Ervine, and Raza are all decent options with the bat. Cremer and Jarvis are solid bowling options too, just missing Chatara now.

Absolutely, and they have some VERY good players on the look out. Hopefully they can lure some of them back. Giving them financial incentives! Hopefully they can also get back Sean Ervine. He has a good 5 years in him!

The main thing for Zimbabwe is for them to have a decent lot of young players who actually stay in the country. Just imagine if Gary Ballance and Sean Ervine stayed in Zimbabwe ....

Absolutely, and not just them, the Currans, De Grandhomme too.

Nonetheless there's another lad called Eddie Byrom who played County and is hopefully going to come back, he's very good. But what they need are good bowlers, especially fast bowlers. Its really a shock that a country filled with naturally athletic African men, there's not a single bowler who bowls in the 140's.

There is a good bowler called Malcom Lake, he's white so I don't know if he'll make the team.

I get the feeling that cricket is probably still a 'white sport' in Zimbabwe, so we often find that the white players turn out to be better than the African players. 6 out of 11 of the team are white despite the population of Zimbabwe being 99% African origin. I think if cricket was more popular among the African population, and if Zimbabwe was a more stable country, we would see some seriously good African origin quicks.

Tatenda Taibu deserves a ton of credit as Wilkins mentions on commentary.

He moved to Liverpool, England a few years ago and set up a cricket academy this year called Rising Stars Academy. The Rising Stars team contains some of the best young talent in Zimbabwe's domestic cricket and they play fixtures against clubs and first class second XI teams in England.

They played 48 matches this summer and won 29, only losing 8 times. It's great exposure for the youngsters to overseas conditions and an excellent initiative from Taibu to facilitate development of new talent for the national team.

Rising Stars are now the fifth domestic side in the Logan Cup which is Zimbabwe's FC competition. Ryan Burl is one to watch.

If not for the racist Mugabe Government, Zimbabwe would still be a VERY good Test team. There White population has seriously gone down and therefore, cricketers are also leaving the country. This may well be the last bunch of whites playing for Zim ever.

SA is heading the same way unfortunately.

I think a similar Zimbabwe team beat Pak in 2013. Jarvis and Taylor are great additions and Zim looks a lot stronger now.

Wouldn't surprise me if they gave Pak a better fight than Lanka.

Decent amount of carry and bounce from a hard surface, little bit of movement and turn on Day 1 but generally good for batting.

Jarvis has already bowled 12 overs. With the turn on offer you'd want to make use of the spinners. Bishoo will be dangerous on this surface.

Cremer's captained well - has kept a slip and short leg for the spinners and has made bowling changes at the right times.

Should that have been given ? If they were reviewing LBW, there was a small spike on Ultra Edge that should've overturned the umpire's decision.

Earlier, the third umpire overturned the on-field decision to give Kyle Hope not out after just as small a spike was detected on Ultra Edge, giving him caught behind.

This day just gets better and better for Zimbabwe.

Another sharp catch from Craig Ervine at short leg and WI now lose their eighth wicket !

    Watching football today.

ZIM wickets are quite good for cricket. UAE wickets are shambolic but I'll give them some space considering the climate there and UAE not having any cricket culture or history, neither local interest.

Wickets in PAK is beyond explanation - more than anything else, I feel no body even cares for it. I have seen few domestic matches and listened several Dr. Nauman's program - they discuss more or less everything but wicket.

That's the innings ! West Indies bowled out for 219 on the first day.

The pitch has offered appreciable turn as Day 1 progressed but take nothing away from Zimbabwe. Their attack has bowled with control and discipline. Their catching and ground fielding has been excellent.

Solomon Mire is an interesting choice as Test opener - more renowned for his hard hitting. Was averaging 42 at a SR of 114 in the Sri Lanka ODIs in the summer.

Doesn't look afraid to play his shots.

Would get into trouble if the ball was moving about, but on these pitches he looks a good option.

What a shot from Solomon Mire, dispatching that ball into the stands for six.

That's stumps, the openers get through to close unscathed and its been Zimbabwe's day.

A fantastic day of Test cricket, really enjoyed that. You dread these sorts of series thinking it'll be a dull, low quality affair but Zimbabwe showed lots of control and effort with the ball whilst their fielding/catching was excellent.

Apart from the brilliant Shai Hope, West Indies faltered with the bat and struggled to build big partnerships as the ball turned appreciably as the day progressed but we'll get a true indication as to how good the pitch is once Zimbabwe have had a bat. Look forward to watching the rest of this Test.

Zimbabwe have blown a great opportunity here. Masterful piece of test batting from the West Indies for once to take control of the match as they could have easily squandered this lead. Been really interesting to follow thus far.

I don't think it will be that easy at all actually.

Very obviously it's one of those reverse situations where the pitch started out unplayable and has gradually eased out and is now actually totally flat.

Against this particular bowling attack on a dead track in searing heat, it's possible to score 430. Especially because Zimbabwe are batting deep this game, have their white players back and have been in great form since Lance Klusener took the job.
