Stokes was a big loss for Eng. He would have done well on this wicket both in batting and bowling.

Warner? That must be some fluke one like how Sehwag had against you guys.He was all at sea against Indian bowlers in the recent ODI series whenever there was swing.Even Kohli isnt that good.He batted well against Lankans but I would reserve my judgement till the England tour next year.

He totally deserves to take away all of Sachin's records on tests. However, he relies more on hand-eye coordination rather than technique and unfortunately such players dont last much as their reflexes slow down once they are in the wrong side of 30's.

You say that, but I've never quite seen the passion Tongan fans had for their team did tonight in any sport in NZ before.

They broke the Mt Smart Stadium attendance record tonight.

And they have celebrated these wins like Indian fans

Prepare a sporting wicket that enables a good contest between bat and ball, you actually get a decent game of Test cricket - who knew ?!

To be fair, its the flaws of the two teams that makes it a balanced and fascinating contest as well as the unusual slowness of the Gabba pitch that hasn't made strokeplay easy.

Smith has produced one of his finest Test knocks to give his side a lead but England have fought hard and have a big opportunity here. Root needs to stabilise the innings now. Wonder what would be a defendable total ?

Khawaja is a great flat tracker. But seems his spin weakness is even worse than I thought to be embarrassed like that at the Gabba by a mediocre finger spinner.

It wasn't you I was talking about.

But yes he is very poor versus spin. I don't know how much longer Australia will stick with him as he won't get any better versus spin.

The Aussies aren’t always the greatest team in the 4th innings. It has historically been one of their few weaker areas for some reason. England need to put a minimum 230 lead on the board to be firmly in the game in my view - yes they could defend 150 or so but that would be extremely difficult.

Australia are ahead by a nose. I think England will struggle to struggle the initiative back after Smith's epic. Nonetheless, a ton by Root and contributions by the surprisingly impressive Stoneman, Bairstow, Malan and Moeen can set the cat among the Australian pigeons again.

Stokes would probably have won this game for England.

I think it would have to be a bit more.

If this was the metric, I'd be comfortable as England. As bad as 7/2 effectively is, I would expect more than 223 on a wicket that's still playing fine. The play in the final session with the new ball and scoreboard pressure isn't at all representative of how the game should be expected to go, and once the ball is a few overs older and if the batsman can get set, they can get runs.

England need their World #1 tail to stand up and be counted this time. If it's effectively more than 170 when the sixth wicket falls, I expect them to push the total into dangerous territory.

    Match is very well poised,

Aussies are not the greatest when chasing a significant total these days. Succumb to pressure easily.

England need a minimum lead of 200 and even then, it may not be enough but gives them a chance

what do you reckon guys, Eng 3rd inning total.

If they can somehow get a lead of 275 then it would be interesting thats only if Anderson is fit...

Probably pants, he's never been a good fielder. Not sure how they have him in gully.

This is a great pitch, you cant bat to aggressively but you need to show intent, you can't bowl to many loose balls and you have to hit the right areas.

The Australian quicks have been sub-par this morning, but I honestly cannot lay much blame at the doors of Stoneman and Malan for their dismissals to the spinner. Lyon has been breathtakingly good.

Graeme Swann talking absolute rubbish on commentary about how a batsman should approach the second innings, as a lower order slogger who had only way of playing he clearly has no idea what he is on about.

Precisely, and he is talking nonsense about their interviews too.

Root on 48* and playing fluently, but he needs some support down there, can’t build a defendable total on his tod.

Root does not have the 50/100 conversion rate to get right to the top of the tree alongside Smith, Williamson & Kohli. Captain needs to dominate & lead & set matches up, not chip in a handy 50.
