Blind World Cup 2018 Discussion Thread [India beat Pakistan in final]

New Delhi: The Cricket Association for the Blind in India, on Monday, announced a 17-member squad to take part in the World Cup for Blind early next year from January 7-21.

While India, who had won the previous edition in 2014, are one of the strong contenders of the trophy, their participation hangs in balance as the venue for next year’s tournament is Pakistan and Dubai.

Given the political tension between the two neighbours, it now depends on the Government of India whether India would take part or not.

The answer is likely to be a no as the situation with Pakistan has worsened after the recent release of 26/11 Mumbai attack mastermind Hafeez Saeed.

Speaking to the Times of India, on Monday, Mahantesh GK, president of the Cricket Association for the Blind in India and World Blind Cricket Ltd, said, "We've applied for government permission to go to Pakistan. We'll go there only if we get it. We've written to the Pakistan Blind Cricket Council that we're not sure of getting permission from our government. We've clearly told them that if we can't come to Pakistan, you'll have to shift our matches to Dubai. If that doesn't happen, we'll be left with no option but to miss the tournament. The organizers though have already planned an alternative venue in Dubai because Australia too have refused to play in Pakistan." Mahantesh, though, was still optimistic of a positive response from the centre on CABI's request. "In the past too, the government has given permission in 2011 and 2013 to play in Pakistan. But the present situation doesn't look too good."

The team, however, will undergo a training camp in Bengaluru from December 6 to January 4 before leaving for the tournament, if allowed.

The squad: Md. Jafar Iqbal, Nareshbhai Tumda, Mahender Vaishnav, Sonu Golkar, Prem Kumar, Basappa Vadgol, I Ajay Kumar Reddy (captain), D Venkateswara Rao, Ganeshbhai Muhudkar, Surajit Ghara, Anilbhai Gariya, Prakash Jayaramaiah, Deepak Malik Sunil Ramesh T Durga Rao Pankaj Bhue, Rambir

Cricket Association for the Blind in India Pakistan travel yet to get govt nod

Bengaluru: Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) is awaiting clearance from the Indian government to travel to Pakistan for the fifth Cricket World Cup scheduled to be held from January 7 to 21.

"Pakistan and Dubai will be hosting world cup for blind from January 7 to 21, but we are awaiting green signal from the Indian government for us to go to Pakistan," CABI General Secretary E John David said here on Wednesday.

In the past, the Indian team was allowed to travel to Pakistan for the tournament despite the political tensions between the two neighbouring countries. David exuded confidence that the Indian government would give them the go ahead this time too.

"We have applied for permission. I am very hopeful that our government will allow us to fly down to Pakistan to play. In 2011, 2013 and 2014 we flew to Pakistan to play matches amidst political tension between the neighbouring countries," he said.

Apart from India and Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Australia and South Africa are the other participating nations, CABI President G K Mahantesh said. The team will be flying to Pakistan on January 5 for the event after undergoing a month-long training here.

So the Indian blind team is coming and seems like BCCI has allowed them since they are already handicapped in life. Either BCCI don't care about the blind team, or they don't want to acknowledge that Pakistan is a safe venue for international games.

Blind Cricket World Cup 2018: Pakistan changes schedule after India’s ‘denial’

KARACHI – The schedule of the Fifth Edition of Blind Cricket World Cup has to be changed because of the Indian Foreign Ministry’s ‘verbal denial’ to its team’s clearance, announced Pakistan Blind Cricket Council (PBCC) on Wednesday.

It said that “despite numerous earnest efforts of Cricket Association of the Blind in India (CABI) and PBCC of getting clearance of Indian Blind Cricket team to tour Pakistan to play the forthcoming World Cup matches is still held in abeyance by the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs”.

“Indian Foreign Ministry has not in written denied the Indian team’s participation in the Blind Cricket World but Cricket Association of the Blind in India (CABI) told us that Foreign Office has denied ‘verbally’,” PBCC Chairman Syed Sultan Shah said in a statement.

The statement added that the unprecedented delay or verbal denial from Indian Foreign Office has compelled PBCC to change the schedule of the World Cup at the last minute.

The Indian team was scheduled to arrive in Lahore on January 6 and first match was scheduled against Pakistan at Gaddafi Stadium on January 8.

The federal and the Punjab governments have assured foolproof security for the World Cup and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is also providing their bullet-proof vehicles for the teams’ traveling.

Now Indian team will arrive in UAE on January 6 and will play its first match against Australia on January 8, the PBCC statement further pointed out.–APP

Karachi: The Pakistan Blind Cricket Council has expressed disappointment at the decision of the Indian government to not give clearance to its national blind team to play the World Cup in Pakistan.

"It is very disappointing because we had planned a show case match of the World Cup in Lahore. Now we have been forced to relocate it to the UAE," Asif Azeem, the media manager of the PBCC, said.

He said the Indian Blind cricket council had informed them that since the Indian government didn't give clearance, the Indian external affairs ministry had also not issued NOCs to the Indian team to travel to Lahore for the World Cup opening ceremony and matches.

"We had planned a grand opening ceremony in Lahore on the 6th with Indian participation and opening match between the two countries but now we will have ceremonies in Ajman and Lahore on Sunday simultaneously."

He said India would now play its matches of the World Cup in Ajman and Sharjah while the opening match in Lahore would be between Pakistan and Bangladesh.

He said the final was scheduled for January 21st in Lahore but if defending champions India reached the final and still didn't get permission to travel to Lahore the final would then be relocated to Sharjah.

"We have no option now because we don't want to derail the World Cup. This is cricket for a special people and we expected the Indian government to give clearance on special consideration," he said.

The PBCC has to now reschedule the entire tournament itinerary.

India had won the World Cup for blind in 2014 in Cape town by beating Pakistan in the final. Pakistan later travelled to India for a full series.

KATHMANDU, Jan 6: Nepali fans group Nepali Cricket Supporters Society (NCSS) has collected a total of Rs 194,846 as of Friday to support the Nepali blind cricketers who traveled strenuously to reach Pakistan to participate in ODI World Cup for the blind.

The declared amount of Rs 150,000 is to be collected soon.

A group of over 150 individuals came forward for the support of the campaign that started on Wednesday.

The donors include some noted individuals such as Nepali Congress leader Gagan Thapa, who donated Rs 25,000. National cricket team captain Paras Khadka, former fast bowler Amrit Bhattarai, and Biratnagar Warriors’ owner Paras Lunia have declared support of Rs 50,000 each for the campaign.

Those making donations include national cricketers Sunil Dhamala, Sompal Kami and Siddhant Lohani.

Former Nepal captain and current U-19 team’s head coach Binod Das and international umpire Devendra Subedi contributed Rs 5,000 each. The A-Division outfit Three Star contributed Rs 10,000 for the fund raising campaign as well.

The Nepali team had to take routes by road and train to reach Pakistan to take part in the Blind Cricket World Cup, which will be played between January 7 and 21. With Cricket Association of Blind Nepal, not having enough money to arrange flight tickets for the team, cricketers traveled for four days by road and train to reach Pakistan.

“The journey to Pakistan for the fifth Blind Cricket World Cup 2018 is no less than a war, just reached Wagha Border with loads of problems and struggles,” posted Niroj Giri, the Team Manager of Blind cricket team on his Facebook on Friday afternoon.

The campaign led by NCSS President Bhanu Sigdel expressed his sadness and dissatisfaction on the sorry state of national blind athletes in Nepal.

“I felt sad to be a cricket fan as well as a leader of fan group to know the dire condition of our blind cricketers. World Cup is not just a sports event, but a matter of pride for the players carrying the emblem of the nation at the international stage. I thought if we as fans can collect some funds and donations to help the national treasures to return home smoothly and safely,’’ said Sigdel, a lecturer at Prime College, Kathmandu.

NCSS has been actively involved in cricket as a volunteer organization supporting Nepali cricketers and events since more than two years now via different means.

The supporters’ society are planning to buy the return air tickets from the funds collected from the two-week campaign or the cash will be handed over to blind cricket team after they arrive in Nepal informed Sigdel.

Pakistan off to winning start in Blind Cricket World Cup

All-rounder Badar Munir was the star of the show as Pakistan claimed victory in the first match of the Blind Cricket World Cup, defeating Bangladesh by nine wickets at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Monday.

Put in to bat, Bangladesh were restricted to 207 in their 40 overs. Munir claimed three wickets and gave away just 32 runs in his seven overs, while Mattiullah and Sajid Nawaz were also among the wickets.

For Bangladesh, Arifullah was the top scorer as he anchored the innings with a patient 57 off 103 balls.

Pakistan made light work of the target, chasing it down with embarrassing ease in just 17 overs and for the loss of only one wicket. Munir was once again the man to put Bangladesh to the sword as he scored a remarkable 145 off just 70 balls, smashing 24 fours along the way. Munir was ably supported by Amir Ashfaq, who scored 46 off 37 balls.

Nepal cricketer vows to beat Pakistan

Nepal blind cricket team all-rounder Radragha Monday vowed that his team would go all-out to beat Pakistan in today’s (Tuesday) match of the World Blind Cricket Cup at Gujranwala.

“Pakistan is the favourite team of the event and definitely, we will be facing a tough challenge from the home side but we are quite determined to defy Pakistan in the match with collective efforts and hard work,” he said.

He said they have set their goals in the World Cup and they will be exhibiting their best performance to outshine a fancied opponent (Pakistan).

“Every team taking part in the World Cup aims to perform to higher level to win the title and we have the similar intentions and thoughts and we are going all-out to strike a win against Pakistan,” he said.

Nepal player said his side has worked really hard to throw a strong challenge in the Cup. The Nepal team all-rounder termed Pakistan and India ‘favourites’ to win the World Cup. He was of the view that if India reaches the final, it will not visit Pakistan to play the most important match. He urged the Indian side to play Pakistan at the Pakistani soil in the larger interest of blind cricket.

Blind Cricket World Cup: Visa issues deprive Pakistan of five players in match against India

KARACHI: Five of Pakistan’s blind cricket team players, including talismanic all-rounder Badar Munir, failed to take part in the ongoing Pakistan-India match of the Blind Cricket World Cup as their travel agent was unable to get them a UAE visa on time.

The two rivals are playing their match in Ajman, UAE with five Pakistani players — Munir, Riassat Khan, Sajid Nawaz, Mohsin Khan and Rashid Khan — missing, drastically weakening the Men in Green.

Reserve players from the squad have been drafted in to replace the quintet but the absence of Munir in particular is going to be felt.

“Munir has scored two consecutive centuries and has led us to two consecutive wins so he will surely be a big loss,” team manager Maher Haroon told The Express Tribune. “We are now in a tough situation but we will do our very best. The travel agent sent these players’ documents late, due to which they were unable to get their visas on time. However, they will play the next game.”

Pakistan are currently leading the points table with their two wins in two matches, with arch-rivals India second on four points. The two sub-continent giants are followed by Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Australia and Nepal in that order.

    th Match:
    Pakistan Vs India

Here at Ajman Oval Cricket Ground, Ajman UAE.

Pakistan made an average score of 282 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in allotted 40 overs. Muhammad Jamil remained unbeaten on 94 runs, he wasn’t as fluent in scoring and finding gaps as he is famous of, he consumed 95 balls to score his 94 runs. Nisar Ali played well for his 64 runs, Mati Ullah made 25 runs. Sunil, Deepak, Ajay Reddy and Rambir took a wicket a piece.
The target of 283 runs wasn’t challenging for the strong Indian batting line-up. India chased the target in 34.5 overs for the loss of 3 wickets. Deepak Malik scored unbeaten 79 runs and Venkatesh scored 64 runs. Zafar Iqbal took 2 wickets for 27 runs and Haroon Khan claimed 1 wicket for 46 runs.

Result: India won by 7 Wickets
Man of the Match: Deepak Malik
    Most Valuable Player: Muhammad Jamil
Mr. David Richardson, the CEO, ICC, Mr. Iftikhar Hamdani, Cluster General Manager Ramada Hotel & Suites Ajman and Syed Sultan Shah Chairman Pakistan Blind Cricket Council were the guests of the occasion and distributed prizes amongst the players.

Blind Cricket World Cup final shifted from Lahore to Sharjah

LAHORE - The Blind Cricket World Cup final will now be played on January 20 at Sharjah instead of Lahore’s famous Gaddafi Stadium. “We have shifted the venue from Lahore to Sharjah after a meeting with World Blind Cricket Council (WBCC) president Mahantesh GH from India,” said WBCC chairman Syed Sultan Shah here Tuesday from Sharjah.

He said Mahantesh, who is also president of Cricket Association of Blind in India (CABI), said in the meeting that their government has not given them permission to visit Pakistan, which is quite unfortunate. “It was our utmost desire to visit Pakistan to play matches of the Cup in Pakistan and as the permission was not granted to us by our government, but we were left with no option but to play our pool matches in UAE as well as the final. We always like to visit Pakistan and feel happy to play cricket there,” Mahantesh said.

“I feel sorry for the lovers of the game in Pakistan for not playing cricket in Pakistan. I am confident that our team will tour Pakistan in near future to play bilateral series,” he added.

WBCC chairman Syed Sultan said they were all set to hold the final of the mega event in Lahore as all preparations were made but the Indian authorities did not grant permission to its team to visit Pakistan to play the final.

“We organised the matches of the World Blind Cricket Cup in different cities of the Punjab in a best possible way and foreign teams expressed their satisfaction and delight the way these matches were staged,” he added.

He said keeping in view the prevailing circumstances and the situation, the WBCC, with mutual understanding, has decided to organise the final in Sharjah. “Pakistan and India are the two top teams of the world blind cricket and we have taken the decision in the larger interest of the game. We are confident that Indian blind cricket team will visit Pakistan during the current year to play bilateral series,” Sultan added.

Defending champions India beat Bangladesh by seven wickets to set up a summit clash with arch-rivals Pakistan in the Blind Cricket World Cup. Ganeshbhai Muhudkar, who was adjudged as the man of the match, scored a magnificent century, 112 off 69 balls, to steer India home comfortably. Bangladesh elected to bat after winning the toss and were restricted to 256 in 38.5 overs by an in-form Indian bowling department. The bowlers struck early as Bangladesh lost two early wickets with less than 50 runs on the board. For Bangladesh, Abdul Malik stood tall with an unbeaten 108.

For India, Durga Rao, who starred with the ball, finished the match with figures of three for 20. Rao was ably supported by Deepak Malik and Prakash who bagged two wickets each.

While Deepak Mallik was retired out for 53 off 43 balls, Naresh made a handy 40 runs off 18 balls.

Earlier, India had defeated Bangladesh by 10 wickets to register their third victory of the tournament. Bangladesh, electing to bat first, scored 226 for eight in the stipulated 40 overs.

In reply, India, riding on fine centuries from Reddy and Sunil Ramesh, reached the target in just 18.4 overs. Reddy (B2 - blind level 2) remained unbeaten on 101 off 60 balls while Ramesh (B3 - blind level 3) remained unbeaten on 105 off 57 balls.

India captain Ajay Reddy's, who shone with the ball, finished the match with the figures of four for 37.

India, who will face Pakistan in the final on January 20, have an upper-hand as they have already defeated them in the group stages by seven wickets.

Batting first, Pakistan had scored a competitive target of 282 for eight in the stipulated 40 overs.

In reply, India comfortably chased down the target in 34.5 overs as Haryana's Deepak Malik (B3 - blind level 3) top-scored with an unbeaten 79 off 71 balls.

World Blind Cricket Council International playing rules

WBCC International playing rules are classified in 25 classes. Each class has single or multiple clauses, the copy of original document can be found here.

The rules of blind cricket are based on the standard Laws of cricket with some essential modifications.

In terms of playing equipment, the major adaptation is the ball, which is significantly larger than a standard cricket ball and filled with ball bearings. The size allows partially sighted players to see the ball and the contents allow blind players to hear it. The wicket (stumps) is also larger, to allow partially sighted players to see and blind players to touch it in order to correctly orient themselves when batting or bowling.

Various other modifications to the rules apply. Verbal signals are widely used both by umpires and players: in particular, the bowler must shout 'Play!' as he releases the ball. The delivery is required to pitch at least twice when bowled to a completely blind batsman (once when bowled to a partially sighted batsman), but must not be rolling. Totally blind batsmen cannot be out stumped, and must be found to be LBW twice before going out. Totally blind fielders are allowed to take a catch on the bounce.

    Segregation of Players

There are a total number of 11 players in the two teams playing the match.
Each team has four players who are totally blind, categorised under B1. Three players, partially blind, categorized under B2 and four players, partially sighted, categorized under B3.
Ball (Auditory Ball) The ball used is significantly larger than the regular cricket ball and is filled with ball bearings that provide audible cues.

Stumps The stumps used are also much larger than regular cricket stumps. It made up of hollow metal pipes, it should have three tubular stumps that is either fluorescent orange or yellow and many more.

First pretty poor comment from you, nevertheless post #34 is about a league match not the final, they were present in the final.
    Badar Munir scored 57.

Blind cricketer allegedly deprived of prize money by PBCC over breach of discipline

A member of Pakistan's blind cricket team in a video released on Monday claimed to have been deprived of prize money by the Pakistan Blind Cricket Council (PBCC) announced by the Peshawar Zalmi owner Javed Afridi for the team's performance in the 2017 Blind T20 World Cup.

Idrees Saleem, the affected player, said in the video that the blind cricket team had come second place in the Blind T20 World Cup last year, after which Afridi had announced $20,000 prize money for the team.

He alleged that PBCC Chairman Sultan Shah had, in an audio message, declined to distribute the prize money on the pretext of substandard performance by the blind team.

Saleem alleged that Sultan had asked: "What did they [the cricketers] achieve?"

The cricketer said he had taken the injustice up and spoken about it in the media, after which Shah backtracked and assured players that the PBCC would distribute the prize money among them.

"Next year [2018], the team was again a runner-up in the World Cup and the PBCC held a conference in which all 19 players and officials, except me, were handed the money," Saleem said, explaining that last year's announced prize money had been distributed to the cricket team this year, and he had been deprived of his share of the reward.

"When I contacted PBCC Chairman Sultan Shah, he asked me to approach the media in order to receive my share of the money," Saleem said.

Saleem, a father of three with a Masters degree in Education, and B1 category player appealed to Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Chief Justice Saqib Nisar and Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Najam Sethi to take notice of the issue.

PBCC Chairman Sultan Shah, in his response to the video today, confirmed that Saleem was not given any share of the prize money announced last year. He said that the player was not rewarded because of his attitude towards discipline.

He accused Saleem of violating the players' Code of Conduct multiple times. He clarified that the PBCC had tried to manage the issue in-house and did not highlight it.

Providing details of the issue, he said that the PBCC distributed Rs3.15 million among players and officials of the team on February 17 at an award ceremony.

Shah added that while the Zalmi had announced a Rs2m cash prize last year, the PBCC had this year added Rs1.15m from its own finances to the prize money. Of the total amount of Rs3.15m, Rs2.6m has been distributed among 20 players, he said.

No national sports federation would tolerate and overlook the disciplinary issues of any player for a longer period of time, the PBCC chairman said, adding that the cricketing body had to set an example for others.

He said that through this action, the council delivered a strong message that there is policy of zero tolerance regarding poor discipline.

Shah said that Saleem should not have approached the media and could even face a ban, adding that the Code of Conduct specified that internal PBCC affairs not be raised in the media.
