Best batsmen ever as captains in Test cricket?

In order of merit I am ranking the best batsmen when they were captains in test cricket

    1.Don Bradman
    2.Brian Lara
    3.Garfield Sobers
    4.Ricky Ponting
    5.Steve Waugh
    6.Greg Chappell
    7.Alan Border
    8.Graham Gooch
    9.Ian Chappell
    10.Clive Lloyd
    11.Mahela Jayewardene
    12.Peter May

Bradman's stats simply put him on another pedestal.Lara bore the brunt of a weak side single-handedly more than any great batsmen.Sobers was an epitome of consistency in all kinds of conditions.Ponting was a run machine overshadowing everyone in his peak statistically.Few batsmen ever posessed Steve Waugh's temperament.Greg Chappell brilliantly carried the empire handed over to him by his brother in 1975-76 averaging over 117 versus the West Indies.Border displayed more grit than any batsmen of his day.Gooch played some of the most inspiring test innings ever as a skipper.Towards the end of his career. When the chips were down Ian Chappell was the ultimate man ,overshadowing even brother Greg or Viv Richards.Clive Lloyd performed even better than compatriot Viv from 1982-85 like against England in 1981 ,against India at home and away in 1983-84 and in Australia in 1981-82.Mahela was a batting jewel as a skipper but much more prolific at home than abroad and thus ranked low down in the list.Peter May was arguably the most complete bat of his time being an epitome of batting perfection.

As match-winners as captains with the bat Bradman Ponting,Waugh and Chappell were the best,in that order.Placed Lara ahead of Sobers, Chappell and Ponting considering he singlehandedly carried the mantle of his side on his shoulders. His best scores were attained when leading his team be it his unbeaten 400 v England or unbeaten 153 v Australia.Gavaskar and Viv Richards were not at their best as captains averaging under 50,nor was Tendulkar. It was the same case with Frank Worrell.

From what I have seen , it is Rickey , far far ahead than any other even lara and Waughas a batsman captain. He was at his peak when he was captain , used to demolish bowling attacks and beating hell out of the bowlers .

on stats purely you are absolutely right but he play for a great team in contrast to Lara who almost always had to steer a sinking ship.Lara at his best had no equal in his time taking domination in batting to its supreme height.

    Q. What was Imran Khan's batting average as a captain?
    A. In 48 tests as a captain, he averaged 52 with the bat. So he should be in the list too.

Two smiths missing from this OP. Steve & Graeme.
Graeme Smith probably has most runs as captain, and average wasn't bad i guess.

Smith 25 tons and Ponting 19 tons.

Two current captains should cross both of them when it comes to number of tons.

Steve Waugh, Greame Smith, R Ponting, Alan Border. We should not forget that Smith was made captain of the SA side at a very young age, I think 22? He was a brilliant captain. These are the players I saw.

I don't think just because he played for a weak side, he should be given special preference. Lara for long time, at least till 2002 had Carl Hooper in the team and till 2006 had Sarwan, Gayle, Chanders, et all with him. Lara played for a weak West Indies side but if he was the only one scoring runs then Chanders wouldn't have averaged 50+ playing alongside Lara and Sarwan and Gayle in 40's. That is a good batting team. They might have failed to bat together well but still they were good. So Lara was the only one scoring runs was wrong. I guess someone posted a stat that West Indies won more when Lara was not playing during his entire career also busts the myth that Lara was the only one who can win games for west Indies.

Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting definitely stand out - great aggressive captains!

Same for Kohli but lets see how he does in overseas tours.

Lara was a poor captain, he did not lead his men well and even his own players have said so.
