PAF ordered to shoot down US drones invading Pakistani airspace: Air Chief Sohail Aman

Chief of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman has said that the PAF is been given orders to shoot down any drones, including those of the US, if they violate the country’s airspace.

Talking to an audience in Islamabad, Aman said that the attack on Kamra Air Base was the biggest and most unfortunate tragedy in the PAF’s history.

“We suffered a lot of losses in the incident but did not lose our morale. In fact, we have continued the fight against extremism with unflinching vigor and resolve since then, transforming the PAF into a much stronger force.”

Talking about the terror threat emanating from Afghanistan, the air chief was of the opinion that where dozens of countries in the world had failed, the PAF had been successful in bringing about peace.

“Even Indian defence officials attest to our successes on the battlefield,” Aman boasted.

The PAF chief also informed the gathering that in the attack on Kamra Air Base, terrorists managed to destroy one PAF SAB plane completely, and also inflicted considerable damage upon another.

“An international organisation wanted $287 million to to cover the material damage that the PAF sustained in the attack, but Pakistan’s bright, young scientists and engineers added two new fully-functioning SAB planes to our fleet at a fraction of the cost,” Aman said.

“After the attack on Kamra Air Base, not only did we set out to make the PAF better and stronger, but were also determined to guide the nations towards self-sufficiency. Now, Pakistan will make its own fighter jets.”

He also stressed that there was no shortage of talent in the country, but rather that the keen minds present here needed a platform on which to showcase their exceptional talents to the world.

Discussing security issues at large, the PAF chief noted that the region the country was based in was beset by different challenges and difficulties at the moment.

“Pakistan is unfortunate in the sense that our neighbours are trying to harm us. India, being our sworn enemy, was behind the attack on Kamran Air Base. What do terrorists want from PAF planes?” he asked.

We cannot, though, change our neighbours, Aman lamented.

“No outside power can engineer a democracy inside a country, nor is democracy the solution to every problem. Examples in Iraq and Libya are in front of us. After the fall of Qaddafi and Saddam, what happened in these countries? Did they get democracy?” Sohail Aman said while talking about Middle Eastern affairs.

It'll be a great move, but let's believe this when we see it.

Are drone strikes still on in Pakistan though? Haven't heard much of it of late.

You are right, very poor article. Tribune should stick to writing about movies and pop music.

hardly any..the odd one or two..most of the strikes are in Afghanistan at the moment as the majority of the US's high value targets are over there now.

If Pakistan stops allowing US drone attacks, US will discard any notion of Pakistan being an 'ally in the war on terror'.

And then things will go south really quickly.

FATA because its so remote might still get a few but Peshawar and Quetta a main population centres. No way US will try to use drones in the middle of the city.

So this sounds like a directive made to close the stable door after the horse has bolted. If they had said this in 2011 and followed through with a shoot down or two, then we're talking.

Probably, but its also a message to the CIA who have an independent drone program. Any such misadventure will be dealt with. Most of the US military drone strikes are done with the knowledge of the pakistan security services. Any move to expand strikes will now have to be met by force.

Essentially this is a diplomatic game. Ignore the bravado and read between the lines. This is merely a response to Mattis' trip to the country. I'm sure some frank discussions were held and a threat to expand drone strikes made. This is Pakistan's response. Trumps Pakistan policy is in tatters. We have called their bluff and their is an old bloke on crutches behind the curtain.

A drone strike on a major population center like Peshawar or Quetta would be a declaration of war.

US cannot afford to lose Pakistan's "alliance" if it wishes to see her soldiers in Afghanistan survive. Keep in mind the US soldier's food, ration, clothing, toilet paper, EVERYTHING goes through Pakistan.

No matter how much the Indians would want the US to "bomb" Pakistan, it is not going to happen.

Drone strikes in remote, hard to reach places in FATA are a different matter since Pakistan has itself requested drone strikes plenty of times in those areas.

Drone warfare is never done in major cities, you think the US will target Peshawar or Quetta? If there was precedence I would consider it but comparing the situation in Iraq or Syria to Pakistan is completely nonsensical.
