Leicestershire CCC is delighted to announce that Pakistan international seamers Muhammad Abbas and Sohail Khan have signed for the 2018 season.

The duo will share the main role of overseas player with Abbas available for the majority of the season and Khan providing cover from late-April to mid-June. Leicestershire CCC is also in the process of recruiting a second overseas player for T20 Blast to play alongside Abbas.

Abbas has an excellent test match record, claiming 23 wickets in five matches at just 21.34 apiece. His 304 first-class wickets have been snared at 21.05 and Abbas has also picked up 65 wickets in white ball cricket.

The 27-year-old was the leading wicket-taker in both the 2015-16 and 2016-17 first-class seasons in Pakistan, taking 132 wickets all told. Abbas then claimed 37 wickets in seven first-class games in the 2017-18 campaign at an average of 14.29 with a haul of 6 for 24 the best of three five-fors.

He played a key role in the recent Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Final, taking 4 for 57 in the first innings as his Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited team emerged victorious.

Abbas has potential international commitments as Pakistan tour Ireland, England and Scotland. He is available for the opening Specsavers County Championship fixture versus Sussex and Khan then takes over until the end of the Royal London One-Day Cup campaign. Abbas will return for the Specsavers County Championship match against Middlesex on Wednesday, June 20.

The 33-year-old Khan has vast experience in both red and white ball cricket including 432 first-class wickets at only 24.37 apiece. Khan caught the eye on Pakistan’s last tour of England; he claimed 13 wickets at 25.00 apiece in two appearances, including five-wicket hauls at Edgbaston and the Kia Oval.

Khan’s List A average is virtually identical to first-class cricket with the seamer having taken 132 wickets in 74 appearances, so he will also be an asset during the Royal London One-Day Cup campaign.

Abbas said: “I am really pleased to be joining Leicestershire County Cricket Club for the 2018 season. It has been a dream of mine to play in county cricket and I am looking forward to meeting my new teammates and working with Head Coach Paul Nixon and the staff.”

Khan added: “I loved having the opportunity to play for Pakistan in England in 2016 and I am very happy to be coming back to play for Leicestershire County Cricket Club.”

Leicestershire CCC Head Coach Paul Nixon said: “We have been looking for a quality fast bowler as our overseas professional and Muhammad Abbas ticks all of the boxes. His test match record is different class, he is the new kid on the block, and I am delighted to secure his signature.

“But we expect to be without Muhammad for the first part of the season and it was vital that we secured high-class cover. Sohail Khan has a superb record both in red and white ball cricket, he has good experience on English conditions, and really stood out on the last tour when Pakistan played here. Sohail’s bowling will be ideally suited to early season conditions here.”

Winning overseas really helps in getting noticed.

Best of luck to both of them.

Happy for both of them. If I have to think selfishly, Sohail's signing won't be of much benefit for Pakistan as he is already on his last legs.

Isn't the most appealing option to the masses but Abbas will most likely be on the plane to England this year. Good that he will be getting some exposure to the conditions early. A lot of foreign bowlers often struggle in England simply due to lack of control.

I see Abbas succeeding as he is an English style bowler himself who'll do well with the Dukes.

But Leicestershire are an awful team - they won 0 out of 14 matches last season and finished bottom of Division 2 so they need all the help they can get.

The main positive is that he'll get exposure of English conditions before our tour there in May as the County season starts in April.

Azhar Ali can be very good option for the county sides to be their overseas player(for first class matches).
He can be very consistent and can look to score big hundreds, he already has played decent number of matches in England and has performed in them(although not as well ashe has performed in UAE or in Australia, but still decent enough).

Below is his test record in England:

    Name: Azhar_eng_full.JPG
Views: 6102
Size: 61.6 KB

Filtering it further(i.e. not considering the 2010 season as it was his debut season and he wasn't a established player back then his record improves a lot.)

    Name: Azhar_eng_full.JPG

    ---------------------------------------

Now comparing Azhar's record with Cheteshwar pujara's (Below is Cheteshwar's record in England):-

    Name: Cheteshwar.JPG
Views: 6117
Size: 50.4 KB

And he already played in county and been decent, so there are high chances that Azhar too can be very good for the county side he plays for.

Continuing the debate of whether Pakistani batsmen can be good for the county sides or not:-

Apart from Azhar Ali even Asad Shafiq can be a good choice for the county teams and since he only plays test matches for Pakistan he will be there with the team for the better part of the county season.

Below is record in test matches based on the countries he has played in:-

Varon Aaron set to play for Leicestershire in 2018 county season

Out-of-favour India fast bowler Varun Aaron is the latest among the bandwagon of India players to sign up for an English county side as he will turn up for Leicestershire during the upcoming season. Aaron has played for India in 9 Tests and equal number of ODIs and was a part of the Indian side during the 2014 series in England. His bouncer struck Stuart Broad on the nose during one of the Test matches. He has earlier played county cricket for Durham.

Leicestershire head coach Paul Nixon said: “Varun is a high-quality performer and his skills will be ideally suited to early season conditions in England. We are delighted to secure his signature for both Specsavers County Championship games and fixtures in the Royal London One-Day Cup.”

“We are getting a genuinely quick bowler in Varun, who has played a number of games for India and also enjoyed a fine domestic career. Varun is very keen to do well for us and get back in the India team again and we’re really looking forward to him linking up with us.”

Aaron will provide the Foxes with overseas cover for Pakistan international seamer Muhammad Abbas, as Sohail Khan is unavailable after picking up an injury recently. Aaron will take over in first-class and List A cricket until Abbas returns for the Specsavers County Championship match against Middlesex on Wednesday, June 20.

“I am relishing the opportunity to join the Foxes for the first part of the season. Playing county cricket presents me with a great opportunity to showcase my skills. I’m looking forward to taking wickets and contributing to the success of the team,” said Aaron.

REPORT | Mark Cosgrove made a sparkling 91 while Neil Dexter and Ben Raine posted half-centuries as Leicestershire CCC responded well on the second day of the university game at the Fischer County Ground.

Loughborough MCCU offered an early examination as new ball duo Chris Sanders and Will Pereira impressed before the Foxes reached 277 for 6 declared.

Pakistan international seamer Muhammad Abbas and Raine then made a breakthrough apiece as Loughborough MCCU closed at 10 for 2 on an entertaining day of cricket.

The first day had been lost to a wet outfield but outstanding work by the groundstaff allowed play to start at 1pm today following an inspection by umpires Nick Cook and Russell Warren.

Leicestershire CCC handed a debut to Abbas while Sam Evans, who has a summer contract at the Fischer County Ground, was named in the Loughborough MCCU XI.

The innings got off to a tough start as the Foxes lost opener Paul Horton for 5 and then Ned Eckersley (0) to the next ball. Horton was bowled by seamer Sanders and Eckersley was trapped leg before wicket as he shouldered arms.

Two further wickets went down as captain Michael Carberry was lbw to left arm seamer Pereira for 8 before Colin Ackermann (0) edged a Sanders delivery to Andy Rishton at third slip who took a sharp catch low to his left.

Lewis Hill joined Cosgrove and the pair rebuilt impressively. Having been cautious to begin with, the trademark Cosgrove cover drive returned. Cosgrove, who has passed 1,000 first-class runs in each of his three years at County, scored 50 from 61 balls in an innings which contained nine boundaries.

The pair put on 90 before Hill was dismissed for 36. Hill had been positive throughout his innings with his driving particularly pleasing on the eye. Hill was dismissed by Rishton as he attempted to cut a ball but guided it straight to Charlie Thurston at gully.

Dexter joined Cosgrove and the pair added 67 to guide County into the tea interval with the score at 169 for 5 after 38 overs. The left-hander was dismissed nine runs short of a ton as Pereira moved one back to hit the off stump.

An attractive unbroken 104-run partnership was then formed between Dexter and Raine with the players reaching respective half-centuries from 90 balls and 74 deliveries. Dexter hit seven fours in the landmark while Raine’s 50 included six fours and a maximum.

Carberry called in the duo as soon as Raine reached 50, and Abbas struck in his second over, removing the off stump of Evans with an absolute beauty.

The Pakistan international bowled a lively spell, and Gavin Griffiths also bowled well before Raine came on and bowled Oliver Soames with his first delivery to end proceedings on a high note.

TEAM | Carberry (capt), Horton, Eckersley (wk), Cosgrove, Ackermann, Hill, Dexter, Raine, Parkinson, Griffiths, Abbas.

    FIGURES | Abbas 4-1-4-1, Griffiths 3-2-1-0, Raine 1-0-1-1.

As per information given to us by Leicestershire, Abbas will play potentially 10 Championship games and 14 group T20 games and any knockouts. Although he may not play every single game.

Hope he can work on a strategy against players playing him outside of the crease

Unfortunately he doesn't have the pace to bring them to the backfoot through a bouncer

He's having a good match against Derbyshire. In the 1st innings, he had figures of 14-4-47-2 and in their 2nd innings he is currently wreaking havoc. At the time of writing, he has figures of 17-5-41-4. This is a Day-Night match

I have been trying to have a discussion thread about Mohammed Abbas whether he should be included in ODI SIDE considering the world cup is I in England. Like saffers are doing with Philander. He would be a sound option in English conditions with the new ball

Have you seen the pitches in England used for white-ball cricket?

Even if they are dry like last year, he is not fast enough to be effective with reverse swing.

He would still be more effective than JK . The new ball would inevitably swing. And I don't think England would let pitches b dead dry in WC, their best chance is to have seaming tracks .

Mohammed Abbas playing in Vitality Blast T20 for Leicester

Seems to have bowled really well so far, compared to other bowlers.

    I thought he wouldn't be a successful T20 bowler.

Did het get to it to move in the initial overs? That is something Pakistan could take advantage of like Engaldn does with David Willy

I wish I could know it from online scorecards. Unfortunately, it's not that equipped as of now.

Regarding his performance, looks to have bowled well. Opposition scored 218/3, and Abbas' performance is 4-0-31-1

Amazing delivery by an amazing bowler. He comes across as a very humble guy and I hope he gets to play in our LOI swuad as well but it's going to be hard for him to make his way into it. Too many bowlers on the bench waiting for their turn before him.

Dunno why some want him in LOIs. You already have the best possible attack in Aamir/Hasan/Shadab/Shaheen. Can be in the squad as backup though. But I think he's fine just playing tests.
