"The heavyweights in the PCB are the real financial burden on the board" : Shahryar Khan

Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan has said that heavyweights are the real financial burden on the PCB and there is a dire need of downsizing in the board.

Talking to Waqt TV during its programme ‘Game Beat’, Shaharyar said: “The heavyweights in the PCB are real financial burden on the board as they do nothing for its betterment but keep on withdrawing hefty amounts besides enjoying huge perks and privileges, while on the other hand, the low-level employees do their job with sincerity but when it comes to downsizing, they are sacked immediately without any second though but such moves couldn’t prove financially good for the PCB.”

When Shaharyar Khan was the PCB chairman, he never withdraw salary from the board as he wanted the low-level staff to get their due rights. “The PCB chairman post must be honorary and he must not withdraw any salary from the board. Instead that salary must be utilized for the welfare of the PCB low-level staffers, who work day in day out for the betterment and progress of the board.”

Shaharyar said that technocrats must be taken onboard to take important decisions about Pakistan cricket. “The former cricketers can give better suggestions for the betterment of Pakistan cricket. In my tenure, Misbah-ul-Haq and Younus Khan were included in the governing board, but their expertise were utilized only for the suggestions and important decisions. I think they must be given free hand to take some more important decisions which may improve Pakistan cricket at domestic level and then at international level.”

About Sarfraz and its captaincy during the New Zealand series, Shaharyar said that during the Kiwis series, Sarfraz seemed under pressure. “Sarfraz couldn’t perform with bat during the series so it added further pressure on him, which affected his captaincy, and he couldn’t deliver as good captain. But later, with team work and collective efforts, Pakistan succeeded in winning the T20 series and also earned honour of becoming No 1 Twenty20 team.

“For the time being, there is no replacement of Sarfraz Ahmad, and according to my opinion, Sarfraz must be retained as captain of all the three formats till upcoming World Cup. After World Cup, the PCB can rethink about new captain, if Sarfraz failed to deliver,” he added.

The former PCB chief lamented that most of the regional heads just focus on including their favourite players in the teams instead of inducting players on merit, which is the main reason behind domestic cricket downfall. “Until and unless, the former cricketers are not involved at regional cricket level, it is too tough to bring betterment at grass-root level and Pakistan domestic cricket will keep on suffering.”

Lauding the efforts of Najam Sethi as PCB chairman, Shaharyar said: “Najam Sethi is an excellent administrator, who is running the PCB and PSL affairs in a befitting manner. There is always room for the improvement, so I think Sethi will certainly look into those matters, which can create hurdles in smooth running of PCB and PSL affairs.”

Don't think discussing financial burden caused by "heavyweights" should be done in public. It makes the board look bad on an international level and makes it look as if they can't pay their own employees.

Not going to blame SYK here. He's just pointing out the menace. No PCB chairman has the authority to sack these heavyweights because political connections are involved. SYK never had that political support to effect any material changes.

Honorary PCB Chairmans or the fact that he was not drawing salary doesn't mean much. The PCB can still spend extravagent amounts on their international travel, travel for their family members and SYK has been accussed of spending the most on these activities.

Najam Sethi dismissed the DG Javed Miandad who was perhaps the biggest drain on the PCB for 5 plus years.

    Few points:

    1. Shahryar Khan has always come across as a sensible and pragmatic man. His comments on Sarfraz seem to indicate that as well.

    2. Shahryar Khan also probably has been the best Chairman our cricket board has had since perhaps Majid Khan. Even if that is greatly down to the ineptitude of the other chairman, Shahryar did do good work. He was involved with getting PSL going. There was stability and continuation as far as captaincy was concerned and when Azhar failed he rectified that mistake quickly as well.

    3. Being a career diplomat, he was pretty good at not being controversial and offensive towards other cricket boards unlike previous chairmen. Kept pretty good ties with every much including BCCI to an extent.

    4. He genuinely wanted to do good by Pakistani cricket and wasn't in it for his own personal gains. I don't think he has tried to get family members into the playing XI or handed out PCB jobs to his friends/relatives. Involving Younis Khan and Misbah in the governing board was an excellent idea as well. He also left when it was time to go and didn't try to hold on to his post. He didn't meddle with team selections either.

    5. His lack of knowledge of the sport was probably his biggest downfall. He doesn't really have a good understanding of the game. This was a hurdle when he was chairman previously as well and it seems like it was a hurdle again. Appointing Azhar as captain was one mistake. The state of domestic cricket deteriorated further. There are so many domestic competitions in Pakistan that I couldn't tell you what the premier tournament for any format is. Comparing it to other top countries, they have premier and competitive tournaments with great significance.

With all the being said, I would still take Shahryar Khan over any other previous chairman that we've had.

During the Champions Trophy I saw first hand so much money being wasted by PCB.

There were several officials with the team who did absolutely nothing apart from enjoy a free holiday, free food and free travel, all at PCB's expense.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Cricket Board’s employment criterion has raised grave concern for citizens as it was giving undue favour to a specific region, an official said on Tuesday.

An official on request of anonymity disclosed that the board’s anomaly has been discussed and question was raised among members for giving extra favour to Punjab province.

He said the majority of contractual employees hired belong to Punjab while other provinces were denied right to job on merit.

“The major chunk was offered to Punjab i.e.142 out of 190 recruited employees” he said. While from Sindh (21), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (11), Balochistan (8), AJK (6) and one each from Fata and Gilgit-Baltistan were offered appointment, he added.

The official said this appointment criterion would promote nepotism and the performance of the institution would badly be affected. “There are currently 866 total employees working in PCB,” he said.

PCB audit should take place, says Khurshid Shah

LAHORE: Opposition leader in National Assembly Syed Khrushid Shah has called for carrying out the audit of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in order to ascertain how funds of billions of rupees are being spent. “There is dire need to probe funds of the PCB, which is a rich organisation, as resources are being spent on some major cities including Lahore, whereas the PCB is not spending money on development of the game in the far-flung areas of the country,” he said this while talking to the media after inaugurating the Pakistan Women’s Hockey League here on Tuesday at the National Hockey Stadium. He said that if sports and overall environment in the country were on the right track then everything in the country can be put in order. Khurashid stressed the need to keep politics away from sports and cited involvement of politics as the key factor in the overall decline of sports in the country. “It is quite unfortunate that there is deep-rooted involvement of politics in country’s sports due to which our sports are at constant decline,” he said adding: “Funds should be pumped in to make the sports institutions financially viable and to arrest the decline in sports, the way Pakistan People’s Party did when it was in power.”

The opposition leader said every institution should work within its domain as undue interference in the working of an institution results in creating problems which hamper the pace of progress. He said that it was a heartening sign that women hockey was on the rise as regular hockey activities were being held from the platform of the Pakistan Hockey Federation to motivate womenfolk to take up hockey as a sport. “I am very much delighted to see that our country is rich in women hockey talent and with hard work and commitment and training under the watchful eyes of experienced coaches, our women hockey team can emerge as a force to reckon with at the international level,” he said.

RAWALPINDI - Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Aziz Sethi must look into huge discrimination and unethical behaviour of PCB with lower staff and especially the ground staff and curator, who spent more than 15 hours during the events and also sacrifice their holidays, but in return, the board doesn’t have anything for them.

It was quite shocking that the PCB top management has every trick in their pockets and never let any opportunity to go waste to ensure hefty TA/DAs and perks and privileges, but when it comes to passing the benefits on lower staff , grounds man and curators, they don’t have a single penny nor even a few words of appreciation.

When this scribe visited Pindi Cricket Stadium to witness the final of the National One Day Cup – Regions 2017-18, it was noticed that the ground staff , curators, manager Pindi Stadium and regional staff remained present at the venue at around 6am to ensure smooth functioning of the things and the final was played on Sunday, the holiday in the entire country. But to the great surprise, PCB never think about ensuring work hours or at least paying meager overtime to the lower staff , who spent around 18 hours during the tournament, besides sacrificing their holidays.

When this scribe asked ground staff and others whether they were paid extra for overtime, the reply was not only shocking but also speaks volumes about PCB’s inability to realise suffering of lower staff . The prices of items of daily use have already been increasing rapidly but the poor staffers’ pays are not meeting the pace of such price-hike. They have to work for long hours even on holidays and they don’t get a single extra penny.

Another shocking and unethical thing to notice was that the players, umpires, commentators, guests, regional heads and other get lunch boxes, free water and other benefits, but the poor ground staff has to buy meal for themselves and even they have to pay from their own pockets to get tea. What a great injustice with the poor staffers, who ensure smooth functioning of each and everything, but in return, they are not given even what they deserve. It is a matter of grave concern for the PCB chairman as it is his moral duty to ensure not only ground and lower-ranked staffers get every possible facility, but also get overtime for extra work. They deserve special incentives and bonuses for making events highly successful while they must be given extra days’ salary for working on public holidays.

Pindi Stadium curator M Riaz, his entire ground staff , manager Shoukat Jadoon, assistant manager Hamza and entire staff all deserve to be given appreciation letters for making the National One-Day Cup a huge success. Riaz prepared prefect pitches for the entire tournament, which were full of support for not only batsmen, but also for the bowlers. If the higher staff can get TA/DAs and other benefits, the lower staff should also get meager benefits. Why the PCB ignored Riaz for his exceptional work, why only PCB knows one curator and that is Niamat Ali, who is at Diamond ground, while all the other curators, who work tirelessly and prepare world class pitches never get a single word of appreciation from the PCB.

All the top class players and former greats were full of praise for Riaz and his staff for excellent work. It is high time when Sethi must announce special incentives for Pindi Stadium staff , but also ensure all the lower staffers must not only get over time, meal, tea but also extra pay for working on holidays.

The PCB should also start special incentives for title winning coach. It is true that coaches have share in prize money, but it is the coach, who works so hard and faces a lot of criticism, but he doesn’t get what he deserves. It is hoped that the PCB chief will look into this matter and also provide justice to coaches as well.

Why do we need politicians to interfere in PCB at all? Why doesn't PCB itself have better constitution to handle such matters as audits?

Shehryar might be a good guy but this is a typical Pakistani mentality... speak out against the office and offer these "great suggestions" once you are out of it, but nobody asks them what the heck did they do about those same issues while they had the authority to do something.
