This game has gone beyond SA's reach now. Amla cant score aggressively on this pitch. It is a difficult pitch. Very hard to get the remaining runs.

AB was the one who could have made the difference but got out to a poor shot. Useless shot really.

I can relate to them as in school and college cricket, I used to be such a player.
Our coach used to gamble on me.I either won my team games on my own or gave aways runs in dozens on a bad day. On good days I used to get 3-4 wkts in space of 3-4 overs. (Note we used to play 25 over a side games). Sometimes I gave away 50-60 runs in 5 overs too which in 1990s- early 200s in school/college cricket level as was still a bit too much.
Lottery players yes. But do India have any better bowling all-rounder who can hit long? Answer is no. He has to be there.

Easy runs being given. NO pressure on batsmen and Kohli waiting for something to happen instead of making it happen.

They'll need to reach like 201/4 at the end of 40 overs (or 214/5), which I think isn't that easy. In ODI, one hardly wins in an even contest without any contribution from No. 3 & 4.

Indian middle order failure to cash in on the start that was given is coming back to haunt them.

320-330 was there for the taking when India were again 150/1 in less than 30 overs.

Hope this is an eye opener for Shastri and selectors and bring in some big hitters.

Sharma might be given MoM today (unless someone wins it for SAF from here), but my MoM is Pandeya, even if he doesn't take any further wicket.

Any team game winner shouldn't be determined by scoreboard. AB is like Jordan in this SAF side - knocking him early is like double teaming MJ into foul trouble by Q4. Long back, Detroit Pistons won back to back NBA and they beat Bulls both times on way - Piston's head coach Chuck Dailey used Iseah Thomas to block MJ at any method and he did that - it went so bitter between two mature man that, for 1992 Dream team (Managed by Dailey), MJ categorically said - if Iseah is there, I am out.

You can't put someone in foul trouble by double teaming them.

Pistons won by using their strength advantage on Jordan. They used to hit him very hard when he drove to the basket which gave them a psychological advantage. MJ later on beat them by getting Pippen on his team and improving outside shooting. Couldn't do it all alone by layups and dunks.

Pandya didn't really do much in this match. Golden duck, lucky wicket of AB and run out from 20 feet away with three stumps to aim at.

Isiah Thomas was actually from Chicago and although he was only 6'1, he was not afraid of anybody. He grew up on the Southside of Chicago and he even decked his former teammate, Rick Mahorn. Mahorn was the only guy that Charles Oakley (best friend of MJ) was afraid of.

His bat was on the line. Out. I don't know why South African camp was not happy with this decision. Third umpire made it look complicated by looking at it again and again.

My wording was a bit wrong - it wasn't double teaming, rather Thomas was used as a dirty guy to stop MJ's run and limiting him to periphery shots, which Rodman took care of. However, Dailey did engage his both guards (Dumers the SG) against MJ, keeping other back court relatively open and his tactics was simple - chase shadow, never allow MJ to handle the ball comfortable for a moment, which eventually frustrated MJ and he started to overshoot, instead of laying off and got into foul trouble, which is rare for him. My point was, it's not about scoring points (or runs) or rebounds (wickets), rather you hurt the opponent where it matters. With 2 spinners, take out AB, SAF would always struggle.

The rest part doesn't make sense - anyone can take couple of key wickets because of batsman's fault & hit the timber to get the last batsman run-out - but here Pandeya did that. By your logic, I have to say that it was Lamb & Lewis's incapability, rather than Wasim's brilliance in 1992 Final .....

called it long ago... key was how SA plays the 2 spinners.

Kohli being on the field is really an annoying factor from now on for me. They should just ask him to bat make 100 and sit in dressing room

Iyer’s batting spotty and his fielding is terrible. Can’t carry a player who can’t catch anything.

I had my reservations about their claim about taming the spin as wrist spinners wont do well with a wet ball.Today the ball was dry and SA batsmen still struggled to pick Indian spinners.

ROHIT SHARMA hit his 17th career ODI century to set India up for a 73-run victory in the fifth Momentum ODI at St. George’s Park on Tuesday and an historic 4-1 series victory with one match still to be played at SuperSport Park on Friday.

It was the first time India had won an ODI series in South Africa and was a particularly sweet one for Momentum Man of the Match Sharma (115 off 126 balls, 11 fours and 4 sixes) who had only managed to score 40 runs in his four previous knocks in the series.

It was a disappointing result for the Standard Bank Proteas who had been given an excellent chance of winning the match and staying alive in the series thanks to a superb effort by their bowlers who for the second match in a row produced an excellent death bowling performance in the final 10 overs, restricting India to 55 runs for the loss of 4 wickets.

The fightback started when Tabraiz Shamsi and Andile Phehlukwayo slowed India down between the 30th and 40th overs and then Lungi Ngidi produced a career best performance to take 4/51 from 9 overs. He claimed the key wicket of Sharma and then got rid of Hardik Pandya with his next delivery. MS Dhoni denied him the chance to become the fourth South African to take a hat trick but he had the last laugh when he dismissed the Indian veteran in his final over.

The target of 275 looked very gettable but once again the Proteas struggled to put partnerships together as they lost 3 wickets for 13 runs following an opening half-century stand between Aiden Markram and Hashim Amla.

It was always going to be an uphill battle after that although Amla (71 off 92 balls, 5 fours) and Heinrich Klaasen (39 off 42 balls, 2 fours and 2 sixes) batted them back into the game until the former was needlessly run out.

Thereafter the Indian spinners had little difficulty in wrapping up the tail with Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal taking five wickets between them at a cost of only 58 runs.

The one positive the Proteas can take out of the series to date is that their youngsters are growing up very quickly in the demanding arena of international cricket. Four of their five specialist bowlers went into this game with a collective total of 78 caps while Klaasen and Markram have also been making impressive strides in other areas

There are certainly more players putting their hands up for possible World Cup selection than there were when the series started.

Even though India won the series it was South Africa who have found players like Klaasen and Lungi through this series. India didn't change the playing XI in all the matches. Hopefully Shreyas Iyer will be dropped and Pandey will play instead.

India won a T20 series against South Africa because it was a one off game but technically a series win...no one boasts about that because it was what it was a one-off just like winning 2-1.

Beating a team 4 out of 5 times is dominance.

    Difference between champions and fluke

India have done better than Pakistan in both Australia and South Africa where you need pace and bounce....Pakistan have done better than India in England where you depend on swing and not so much pace is required.
