Better Test opening pair: Michael Slater / Mark Taylor or Justin Langer / Matthew Hayden?

Obviously i am talking about test cricket here. Which pair do you rate higher?

    Langer/Hayden

They were the reason for Australia becoming the dominant team in that era and Ponting playing his natural game in test cricket without any pressure.

    Langer and Hayden by far.

Hayden performed in India where Australian batsmen historically don't. That outweights that.

Slater and Taylor faced the better bowlers by a considerable margin. It's comparing Wasim/Waqar, Donald/Pollock and Walsh/Ambrose with the likes of Shoaib/Sami, Ntini/Nel and Edwards/Powell. I grant that pale imitations of Waqar and Pollock were still playing and England and India had better bowlers in the early noughties compared with the nineties but the drop off in the quality of bowling is huge. Of course, there's also the fact that I'd rather pay good money to watch Michael Slater bat than any of the others. I'd buck the trend and choose the two NSW lads, with the added bonus of Taylor's captaincy. Both are horrible commentators though.

Hayden and Langer. They were the perfect foil for each other.

I may be biased but I will take Slater and Taylor. Both were excellent stroke makers. Langer's batting was like watching paint dry.

Not sure as a pair but the best bat out of the 4 was M Taylor.
