Waqar Younis on Shaheen's bowling in 1st Test vs Australia 2019

"I think if we look at all Pakistan bowlers in this game, then Shaheen Shah Afridi has bowled the best so far, unfortunately we were unlucky that he could not get wickets at the right time and they have experienced batsmen who do not waste an opportunity to score"

good learning curve for him.. I like his bowling action and attitude.. If he can learn to swing the bowl a bit more he can be lethal.. few sessions with Akram and lots of practice and hard work will sort him out.
I hope the system of pcb does not ruin him.

Lol. That was Ishant's third tour of Australia and Umesh's second. Only Shami was relatively inexperienced.

What is Waqar doing? Waqar fans would attack Azhar Mehmood every game and now i see silence. No question marks are being raised. This is criminal if Waqar can't fix it then he should just leave with the idea of being a professional coach. Its seems like Waqar is only there for paychecks.

His fielding is a real concern. Fielding is about application and work ethic. He has somehow managed to get worse in fielding since his debut.

He really needs to improve his fielding. I thought he bowled well.

David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne plundered centuries as Australia dominated the opening day of the 2nd Test against Pakistan in Adelaide on Friday. Explosive opener David Warner brought up his second century in as many Tests, exposing not only Pakistan's listless bowling attack but also the visitors' clumsy fielding in the day-night clash. In the 42nd over of the day bowled by Iftikhar Ahmed, Shaheen Afridi, stationed at fine leg, could not stop the ball played by Warner out to the deep. Afridi kept jogging the opposite way to where the ball ended up. Then in the 58th over, Warner played a front foot drive that went past the cover for four runs. The ball had nearly come to a stop as Afridi kicked it into the fence.

"Shaheen Shah was in la la land at fine leg," Wasim Akram, who is on commentary duty for the series, said.

"Yasir Shah and Shan Masood were probably yawning. That's the problem with Pakistan cricket. They should be on the ball.

"Nobody was backing up and you as a fielder, it doesn't matter how inexperienced you are, you set yourself, new batsman in, they just came out, I'll probably start five-ten yards inside the boundary line not on the boundary," Akram added.

Warner continued the rich vein of home form as he brought up his 23rd Test century off 156 balls with a single from spinner Yasir Shah.

Warner hit 12 fours in a near faultless innings, ably supported by number three Labuschagne who followed up his 185 at the Gabba - a maiden Test hundred - by getting another in Adelaide.

The 25-year-old slapped 14 fours, under lights and against an attack that struggled to make the most of conditions.

Australia lead the two-match series 1-0 after winning the opening Test by an inning and five runs.

Already a very good LOI bowler, stats very strong and performed in WC. Tests will only get better, early for him for to be the spearhead of the attack but that looks the case.

Looking forward to him bowling at home against SL in tests - get his tail up.

    Misbah on Shaheen Shah Afridi

"Shaheen was the one bowler who was bowling 140+ after bowling 26-27 overs. The good thing was that the thing he was lacking in SA, that his energy levels weren't consistent was much improved. He was the standout bowler. He maintained his pace in all his spells and his control was also good"

Shaheen Shah Afridi speaking to the press:

"Whenever we have had a chance in the ground, we have given it our 100%; We will try tomorrow to put in a good effort with the new ball"

"Its a question of taking one more wicket and then the tail will start"

"I did my T20I debut in Karachi in front of our crowd and it feels good; I am happy that my brother played a Test match against Sri Lanka; I felt very good when I took the first wicket in this game"

"Bowlers are getting a lot of help from the weather as they are able to swing and seam the ball, but the only chance of getting a wicket is by bowling consistently at the same spot"

"I have no doubt that our batsmen are very good and they will handle the conditions"

"Who doesnt want to bowl out the opposition on a small total? We would hope to have them out for 15 runs if we could - All the bowlers are trying their best and we have taken the new ball, and we will try and get them out below 300 runs"

Question : How is your understanding with the Coach and Captain?
SSA: Ask me another question - then remarks on the side to PCB guy, what kind of ....[inaudible]

"Many people came from my village to support me as this is the first time I am playing a Test in Pakistan"

"They have come from Peshawar to support me and Inshallah will also come in the next 3 days"

"I am still learning a lot from my brother, he messages me in the morning about what I have done wrong in my bowling and how I can improve myself, so I get learn a lot; He tells me that the truest form of the game is Test cricket, the rest of the formats are for entertainment"

"Its strange to keep up with overrates with 4 fast-bowlers, but we are keeping an eye on the time and overrates, getting wickets and also bowling consistently"

"I am feeling good about myself with the old and new balls after my comeback"

"These are new coaches and this is the first time I am working with them, I have learnt a lot from Waqar Bhai; After Wasim Bhai, I really like Waqar Bhai; I feel good whenever I work with Waqar Bhai and Misbah Bhai"

By way of comparison, Haseeb Hameed has played SIXTY THREE of them.

A couple of years ago when I saw him I thought he was too raw for anything but t20 cricket. I think I was right then

But since that time thereís been a steady improvement and I think heís grown into an absolute gem of a bowler. Putting aside his underwhelming performance in Australia I think in this recent series heís showing lots more skills. Heís definitely one of the most improved Pakistani cricketers in that period along with Babar.

There is the odd loose ball but also there is greater control. Heís bringing the ball back into the RHB as well as taking it away which is absolutely essential to make it at test level. What I would love to see is bowling slower with the older ball to get it to swing just a bit more and bowl straighter. But I think heís more of a young wasim Akram than amir was. His height and quicker arm action for one makes him a real contender.

Also love his partnership with abbas. Think itís perfect.

For me the most impressive part has been the control aspect iirc in SA he was going well over 3+ an over and heís managed to increase his control. Just needs to manage his workload as he was looking very tired by the end of today. Whatís your opinions on Naseem? Think heís got the skills but is very raw at the moment.

abbas is also class at home. Should not disrespect the guy just because he underperforms in australia, south africa and maybe n.z. He can still dominate all those teams at home. Just need to figure out a bowler who can complement shaheen for those particular tours. Maybe sameen gul.

Misbah very happy with Shaheen Shah Afridi's progress:

"These young bowlers did not have so much first class experience, but we banked on Naseem Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi at the international level which was a tough ask for them, and they responded well"

"Shaheen Shah Afridi has played a bit and he is maturing well"

Naseem is ok. I’m not much into speeds but like to see a bowler show control and movement. Sometimes it’s not about one individual but the attack as a whole and role of individuals. I like the combination of Abbas and shaheen and then Naseem slips in nicely as the 3rd seamer. If only yasir develops his form then this is a good attack with the option of a bowling all rounder but the tail is very long. I’m tempted to say that Abbas ssa and Naseem is a very long tail but their main focus is bowling. With a dukes ball and in England they will be a real handful.

Our most exciting player after Babar. The only things that can stop him are him not taking his game seriously, and him playing too much T20 nonsense early in his career. PCB should not overlay Naseem and Shaheen. I would rest them for some ODIs and play them in tests. Playing first class cricket is what will help them improve.

Waqar Younis in his interview with PP

PakPassion.net: What do you say about priorities for example to Shaheen Shah Afridi, a young pace-bowler playing all three formats for Pakistan and who is in demand in County cricket and Leagues around the globe?

    Waqar Younis:
It’s tough isn’t it as you don’t want to deprive him from earning a living. But in order to motivate them, my first words to all of our bowlers is that your country and playing Test cricket for Pakistan always comes first, the other formats come next and then playing in Leagues should always come after that. Shaheen is maturing very quickly, he likes to learn and is keen to perform and I’m really pleased with how he is progressing as a bowler. I have spoken with the PCB hierarchy about players finances and managing their workloads as each Test match counts towards the World Test Championship and we have to manage Shaheen’s and the other pacers workloads. I am sure the Board is working on this and they will come up with some sort of agreement to help and work with the players.

PakPassion.net: On the topic of Shaheen Shah Afridi, what areas of improvement are you targeting from him?

    Waqar Younis:
Fitness is key for fast-bowlers and that should never be overlooked. This group of pace-bowlers are mainly teenagers and are still growing as men. Fitness is the number one priority and in the last few months Shaheen has worked really hard and that’s why you are seeing him bowling long spells as he was doing in Australia and against Sri Lanka. We are taking care of his recovery time in between matches, as we are with the other pace-bowlers we have. Shaheen is a smart cricketer, and what he needs to do is to put the ball in the right place on a regular basis, not every now and then. He’s learning quickly and what is good is that the competition for places is there and competition amongst fast-bowlers is also there which I feel was lacking in the recent past. This competition amongst themselves on the field is a plus point as the bowlers learn from each other. Shaheen and the other boys can look at the likes of Dale Steyn, James Anderson and Stuart Broad, and take note of the number of years they have been around and how they are still going strong and performing well.

I love this guy. he is also very humble. Attitude of a champion. I also heard he is a very quick learner. Wasim said he only taught him some technique for a day or so and he picked it up very quickly. He utilized those techniques that he learnt in the world cup and the results were there to see for everyone.

Not to mention his performances in tests cricket. He was solid vs australia. other bowlers let him down. He in my opinion stood out. There is only so much you can do without support. Brilliant player.

to me he is already top 5 in odi and t20.

in tests I will put him in top 10 for now because he is still new. But I see him in top 5 soon.

Shaheen Shah Afridi recalls his maiden five-wicket haul

    Lahore, 3 February 2020:

After rain played spoilsport in Rawalpindi, the focus had shifted to Karachi with Pakistan and Sri Lanka locking horns in the second ICC World Test Championship fixture between them.

Pakistan, playing first-ever Test series in their homeland after more than 10 years, were eager to make the most of the occasion. They, however, were off to a shaky start as Azhar Ali’s men were bowled out for 191 in 59.3 overs on day one after opting to bat.

With a small total on board and the sun about to set on the metropolitan city, Pakistan needed to strike with the ball to push the visitors on the back foot.

At that moment, Shaheen Shah Afridi raised his hand.

The 19-year-old induced an edge from Oshada Fernando, inviting him to drive on a fuller delivery, in the seventh over of the first Sri Lankan innings.

“When I took the first wicket I wasn’t sure whether the batsman had nicked the ball,” Shaheen told PCB Digital. “It was Rizzy [Mohammad Rizwan] who told me that the batsman had edged the ball and he was very certain about it.

“We had a young bowling unit and there was a lot of responsibility on me as we had been dismissed for a small total.”

The day ended with honours even as Sri Lanka were 64 for three – thanks to Mohammad Abbas, who accounted for the wickets of Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis.

On day two, Shaheen returned with more firepower and got the prized scalps of Angelo Matthews and Dhananjaya De Silva, who had struck an unbeaten 102 in the first Test.

“I was working on Mathews and bowling him at the same channel. He was trying to bat deep and waiting for the ball to get older.

“The plan for De Silva was a simple one and it was that we have to get him out as soon as possible as he had scored runs against us previously.”

With Sri Lanka reduced to 271 for eight after Dinesh Chandimal, the only batsman to put up a resistance with 74, back in the pavilion, Shaheen dismissed Dilruwan Perera, who made 48, and Lahiru Kumara (0), the last two tourists' wickets, in a span of three balls.

He recorded his first-ever five-wicket haul in Test cricket with five for 77 and that it came in front of his countrymen, cheering in stands, made it more special for the youngster.

“There was an instance when we thought we are playing a T20 as the crowd had turned out in large numbers to support us. We were all very excited as Test cricket was back in Pakistan after a gap of 10 years.

In the next innings, it was Naseem Shah, the 16-year-old pacer, who dismantled the Sri Lankan batting line-up. Playing only his second Test, Naseem took five for 31 to also record his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

“During the second Sri Lankan innings, I had told Naseem that it was his day and he will take wickets. He had that hunger and he wanted to compete with me.

“It is a healthy rivalry to have. It is something that Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis also had. This not only brings out the best performances from us but also helps the team.”

The first Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh, an ICC World Test Championship fixture, will begin on Friday at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
