yea, he looks somewhat awkward, but somehow the ball doesnt beat his bat much. He middles most of the deliveries. I dont know how he is doing it, but I suspect once his hand eye coordination falters, his decline will be BIG!

So will our favourite 'Englishman', @Junaids like to explain the attendance? I thought that was the marker of public interest in the series.

If that's the case, it seems like a ODI/T20 against India is much more important than a test against Australia?

I don't think it's a bad pitch. Bowlers have got a little bit of movement. The bouncers have had the batsmen rushed or ducking half the time.

It won't go down as a great SA pitch, it's a bit dryer than most but the bounce is ok, I'd say it will reverse later and there seems to be something there for the spinners. Seems a bit more like an SCG pitch (which is usually a decent test deck, every type of bowler gets some chance + runs can be scored) than a Green Mamba.

Vernon showing how to bowl to Australian batsmen. You want to drag them forward. This short pitch stuff won't work. Australians grow up playing short and quick deliveries. Asking them to come forward is pushing them out out their comfort zone.

SA need to stick to that length. Australia like to feel bat on ball, so South Africa should persist with a good length.

You won't bounce Oz out but I think SA got the balance about right on this pitch. Enough short stuff to make them realise it's a Test Match with some seriously quick bowlers in it, enough to put a bit of doubt but didn't overdo it. It's not green so they couldn't afford to be ultra aggressive with a super full length all the time. Warner would feast on that if you let him get bat on ball all the time, as you say.

You won't bounce Aussies out on any surface.

Good line and length is the way to bowl to current Australian batsmen. Test their patience.

Morkel and Rabada bowling at 145 will get batsmen ducking at any pitch. But look at the carry, Quinton is taking most of them with fingers pointing towards the ground at knee height. He is even up at the stumps for Philander. Yep, seems like a SCG track but we want seam movement when you have two amazing fast bowling attacks - not a slow track. Some nibble at times, yes but then not enough to worry any batsmen. Will reverse later and Australia has better bowling attack for such a pitch - more pace and a better spinner. Disappointing for me

This bowling is largely unthreatening on surfaces like this. Australians are very much used to these surfaces. Even tailenders from Australia will score some runs here. First they have to get through Marsh bros. Australia is unstoppable on relatively easy batting conditions.

Apart from the crowd attendance theory, some other theories getting debunked here

    1) SA doesn't tailor pitches against visiting teams (Green mamba for Indians, flat strips for Ozzies)
    2) Only Indians get batting strips so that the matches last till day 5 as per the theory by a certain Made in England, Living in Australia poster here

SA looks like battle ready after closely faught test series ... AUS coming from relatively easy Ashes win.

Still early days, interesting to see the series progress ... Good battle between evenly matched teams
