Herath 3 tests 28 wickets against Australia at 12? wow Against aussies you need to load the side with left arm spinners. They even had issues with BD in BD. Also Jadeja. Now 8 wickets by left arm spinner in this test

Actually, Starc only removed FAF and blew away the tail.

Earlier on he was quite expensive with the new ball and had to be removed from the attack.

Starc is a brilliant white ball bowler, but in Tests I canít see the difference between him and Wahab Riaz. They were practically identical in Australia fourteen months ago and I still canít see any point of difference between them in Tests.

Given how hard it is to dismiss tail you need someone like him.India would have won all 3 tests with someone like Starc to wipe off the tail. He takes pitch out of the equation against less than technicallyequipped batsmen.

SA should believe their batsman should be able to hold their own on seaming tracks and provide more seamer friendly surfaces. Philander will run through the Aussies who are not exactly equipped on seamer friendly surfaces. Giving such a slowish track is effectively neutralizing their own bowling.

He played one Test against Australia and went for 250 runs in 50 odd overs without a wicket.
There is a huge gulf of difference between Test bowler and T20 mercenary

Put them on the same surface with the same ball and they deliver identical spells and figures.

Either Wahab or Shaheen Shah will play a big role here in December!

I think people really over-estimate Mitchell Starc in Test cricket.

Heís an ODI ATG, but at the age of 28 he only has 170 Test wickets at an average of 28, in spite of playing three quarters of his Tests outside Asia.

In fact, heís still only taken 301 First Class wickets. He still bowls the same bouncer-Yorker combinations in Tests and has never learned how to bowl to a slip cordon

He is the least effective of Aus fast bowlers. But Aus pitches are roads nowadays. So you can't say he had an advantage. Still had one of the best series for a fast bowler in Asia when he took 26 wickets in 3 tests against SL

MORNE MORKEL took three of the six wickets he needs in his farewell series to join the 300 club as the Standard Bank Proteas made a creditable fightback on the third day of the first Sunfoil Test match against Australia at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Saturday.

On another day shortened by bad light Morkel took 3/42 in 13.4 overs to take his career total to 297 while Keshav Maharaj took 3/93 in 28 overs to give him eight dismissals in the match. AB de Villliers had another busy day in the slips and has now taken 5 catches in the match.

The pick of the bowlers was arguably Kagiso Rabada who was both economical and penetrative in taking 2/28 in 13 overs.

The ninth wicket fell to Dean Elgar who has remarkably dismissed Australian captain Steve Smith twice in his career as Australia reached the close on 213/9.

The visitors are nevertheless in an enormously strong position with an overall lead of 402 runs and, with two full days still to go, and, allowing for the uncertainties of bad light at this particular venue, they must still be the favourites to go one up in the series.

The Australians made a bright start to the day as David Warner and Cameron Bancroft put on 56 for the first wicket in only 13 overs but the Proteas still managed to take three wickets in each session, pulling Australia back by taking 3/63 in the second session and 3/38 in the shortened final session after the visitors had got away with 122/3 in the morning session.

Bancroft’s 53 (83 balls, 10 fours) was the only half-century of the day and it underlined the magnitude of the task facing the Proteas on days 4 and 5.

Let's remember that Starc is considered the specialist for blowing away the tail.

When his side bats, he and the tail contribute a lot more runs than the opposition. Let's take this match as an immediate example of how the final score put pressure on SA.

Slagging off the importance of a tail destroyer is easy, until they score runs that impress the advantage. In the first innings the #8 Cummins got out leaving the score 251/7. The next two wickets added 90 runs, and the last added 10 runs.

Beyond stats, Mitch Marsh who batted with the tail didn't expect Starc to turn up and blow the AUS tail away, so he didn't farm the strike and just batted as if they were inexperienced batsmen. Yes, Starc isn't a tail ender himself, but could he and their bowlers face reverse swinging balls that might crush your toes? Break some other part of you, when very few actual batsmen have the technique to play against a moving ball?

In contrast SA's last 5 wickets posted a total of 12 runs. Yes, the SA batsmen failed, but Starc often destroys hopes of rearguards with swing and pace.

Australia raced ahead because SA don't have Starc bowling at the last 3 batsmen. Acting like blowing the tail doesn't matter suggests that maybe you're less interested in watching cricket than theorising from numbers.

True India badly needed someone like Starc. Imagine India not letting their tail get away. I understand India dropped boat load of catches. Still Starc doesn't depend on your catching abiltiy. India probably would have won the series.

Australian bowling attack has proven to be too strong once runs are on the board they will do the rest. Don't see SA lasting against Lyon and Starc.

SA without steyn can't really produce an out and out green top. But that is the only option to compete with them. When you offer a slow pitch Austarlia will come out on top every single time. Spin pitch is another option. But you need atleast 2 decent spinners. 1 is not enough. If Philander gets a wicket that suits him he can roll this Australian side over as well. Unlike the past Aussie sides, this side has lot of cracks. They lost to SL, India, BD because those teams have more than one spinner.

Despite the position South Africa are in right now, I expect a closely fought series with the Proteas edging it.

Even this game is not done and dusted. If any team can chase down 400+ in the last innings, it is South Africa.

Elgar and Markram need to have a good partnership first up. That will give the rest of the batsmen some confidence and make the target seem less daunting. A century from Amla or ABD and a couple of 50s and cameos from the rest will give South Africa their best test win of recent times.

    Delusion at its finest.

Sorry bro, you lose a bit of credibility with this one.

If weíre looking for differences letís start with one of them having a test avg of 27 and dropping fast while taking MORE than 4 wickets per test on avg and being able to claim big hauls regularly, instead of huffing and puffing and bagging a 2-fer .

How can you not see difference between Wahab and Starc?

Starc has picked up 9 5-fers and 1 10-fer at avg of 27.

Wahab has 2 5-fers and average is 33.

This difference is not simply due to Wahab not playing enough outside Asia. Wahab has played more than half his games outside Asia and averages 37 outside Asia.

Australia are probably 300 runs short on this flat, slow docile wicket . They'll probably want to bat until tea at very least. 750 is the minimum to avoid defeat on this wicket, even a die hard Aussie fan would take a draw and run.
South Africa will be super confident having trounced the #1 Test side who've lost just twice in 30 odd matches. If Australia are bundled out before lunch then Graeme Elgar will score a double ton and walk this match on his own. I can only see one winner from here.

Australia are about 300 runs short of a good 4th innings total, I reckon. 750 is a par score here. They should bat until after tea to get anything from this game.

South Africa will be super confident having trounced the #1 Test side who've lost just twice in 30 odd matches. If Australia are bundled out before lunch then Graeme Elgar will score a double ton and walk this match on his own. I can only see one winner from here.
    Awesome

Australia will really have to bowl the best they have ever had in the history of the game, to be able to run through this ATG South African Batting Line up.

I don't understand this pitch with Australia having bad batting apart from Smith. South africa should go for green tracks , their best chance to win series.

People usually complain that in subcontinent , win the toss and win the match. Although India have changed that , SA have really become that way.

Point exactly, I've just reassessed this pitch. Australia should have set South Africa a 1000 runs at least. Kirsten once batted for two full days on this very same ground for a stupendous 275*, 14 years ago and saved a Test.

South Africa weren't the master chasers they are currently. I reckon these rock stars have got this.

SA's future holds in hands of Markaram, Elgar, Rabada and de Kock.

Sad there is no one in the middle order(3-6) good enough to provide stability to the team after the retirement of senior players.

Lyon has just bowled a ripper.

I have to say South Africa has the best bowling conditions in the world. Finger spinners, wrist spinners, medium pace, fast and swing bowlers including seamers have all enjoyed these conditions. In most countries wickets don't suit certain bowlers. But not here.

I hope the Global T20 doesn't mess with our wickets.

Wickets in UAE are way better for bowling. Team rarely cross 120 in the PSL

Amla certainly didn't disappoint at doing what he does best.
