FIFA World Cup 2018 - Squads

Brazil defender Dani Alves has been ruled out of the upcoming World Cup in Russia, the Brazilian Football Confederation have confirmed.

Alves injured his anterior cruciate ligament while playing for Paris Saint-Germain in the final of the Coupe de France on Tuesday night.

The 35-year-old, who has won 107 caps for his country, will need surgery on the injury and has now been ruled out of this summer's tournament in Russia after being assessed by the Brazilian medical team.

A statement released on Friday read: "The patient underwent close examination and confirmed the initial diagnosis of anterior cruciate ligament injury, which will require surgical treatment.

"The technical team of the Brazilian National Team wishes Daniel Alves a prompt recovery so that his technique and leadership is back for the Amarelinha as soon as possible."

The 2018 Russia World Cup kicks off on June 15, with Brazil's first group game two days later against Switzerland.

Brazil could also be without PSG forward Neymar, who faces a race against time to prove his fitness after breaking a bone in his foot.

German brewery scraps World Cup bottle caps after Saudi Arabia flag row

A local German brewery announced on Friday it was halting a marketing campaign tied to the World Cup after sparking outrage on social media.

The Eichbaum brewery, located in the southwestern German city of Mannheim, printed the flags of each of the 32 World Cup national teams on its bottle caps to celebrate the upcoming soccer tournament.

The inclusion of Saudi Arabia's flag on the beer bottle caps, however, prompted numerous complaints on Facebook and Twitter.

Many social media users noted that it was inappropriate to print the Islamic statement of faith — which is featured on Saudi Arabia's flag — on an alcoholic beverage.

The consumption of alcohol is banned in Saudi Arabia and many Muslims in other areas around the world also abstain from drinking alcohol.

After consulting with local police and other authorities, Eichbaum said in a Facebook post on Friday that they'd stopped producing the World Cup bottle caps and that they were working to remove the Saudi Arabia bottles from stores.

The brewery said the move was to "prevent further possible insults."

    'Disrespecting Islam'

Eichbaum initially sought to address the controversy in a letter addressed "Dear Muslims" that was posted on their Facebook page on Wednesday.

"We are not interested in religious or political comments — certainly not on our products. If we have unintentionally offended you, we sincerely apologize," the Wednesday post read.

He added that the brewery wasn't aware that Saudi Arabia's flag contained the Islamic statement of faith.

The initial post was eventually deleted, but only after it accumulated some 1,355 comments, reported local newspaper Mannheimer Morgen.

"The discussion around the Saudi Arabian bottle caps took on a form that overstepped the boundaries of freedom of expression," Eichbaum wrote in its Friday post.

The brewery's Facebook page was also swamped with one-star reviews over the past few days due to the issue. Many stated in their reviews that Eichbaum's marketing stunt was "disrespecting Islam just to sell alcohol."

Other one-star reviewers complained that the brewery was filled with "cowards" for pulling the beer bottle caps.

Brazil have named injured Paris St-Germain forward Neymar in their 23-man squad for the World Cup in Russia.

Manchester City quartet Ederson, Danilo, Fernandinho and Gabriel Jesus are among the Premier League-based players named in the squad.

They are joined by Liverpool's Roberto Firmino and Chelsea's Willian.

Brazil are in Group E with Costa Rica, Serbia and Switzerland, and play their first match on Sunday, 17 June.

"I believe this is a squad we can be excited about," Southgate said.

Manchester United's Paul Pogba was selected for the team, while Manchester City's Benjamin Mendy was also included, despite being injured for most of the season.

Here is France’s preliminary 2018 World Cup squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Hugo Lloris (Tottenham Hotspur), Steve Mandanda (Marseille), Alphonse Areola (PSG)

Defenders: Djibril Sidibé (AS Monaco), Benjamin Pavard (VfB Stuttgart), Raphaël Varane (Real Madrid), Presnel Kimpembe (PSG), Adil Rami (Marseille), Samuel Umtiti (FC Barcelona), Lucas Hernandez (Atletico Madrid), Benjamin Mendy (Manchester City)

Attackers: Kylian Mbappé (PSG), Olivier Giroud (Chelsea FC), Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid), Ousmane Dembélé (FC Barcelona), Nabil Fékir (Lyon), Florian Thauvin (Marseille)

Still feel like they will make the KO stage, plus the expectations will not be as high compared to the past so perhaps they will perform better when the pressure is no where near as high. Regardless, it will be a successful campaign if they make it pass the group stage lmao but am making a bold prediction of a semi-final position.

Facing Tunisia who are ok and Panama whose team is full of oldish players, England really should bag 6 points from those two and get to the KO stage. I suppose the good thing for England is there are plenty of other teams they can beat if they play their good football but knowing England being bigger chokers than the Saffers you cant count out another embarrsing early exit. Interstingly Gary Linker wrote England should write off this world cup! . they should play all youngsters and build for the future but we both know there are silly exceptions from casual England fans who will want them to get to the final and win it. Semi would be a success for England but I cant see them getting past the quarters. I love the World Cup so cant wait for a month of festival football, hopefully the Russians will put up a good party.

Yes it is... Was so heartbreaking to see Robben retire with such an ending of his international career.
I still remember the feeling of the people here. The next day after Holland didn't qualify was just so sad for the fans (literally every fan was cursing the coach before Dick Advocaat (Danny Blind) as he messed everything up) as they also didn't qualify for the EC 2016

West Ham striker Javier Hernandez will make his third appearance at a World Cup after being named in Mexico's final 23-man squad.

Hernandez, 30, is the only Premier League player in Juan Carlos Osorio's squad to travel to Russia.

He made his World Cup debut in South Africa in 2010 and was a Manchester United player by Brazil 2014.

Mexico, 15th in Fifa's world rankings, are in Group F with holders Germany, Sweden and South Korea.

Three players from Portuguese champions Porto make the cut - defender Diego Reyes, midfielder Hector Herrera and forward Jesus Manuel Corona.

Mexico's opening match is against Germany in Moscow on 17 June (16:00 BST).

Making a 16th appearance at the World Cup, Mexico have reached the knockout stage at the past six tournaments.

Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has included Vincent Kompany in his final 23-man World Cup squad despite a groin injury - but Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke has been left out.

Kompany, who missed Euro 2016 due to injury, had seen his participation in Russia put into doubt when he limped out of Saturday's friendly draw with Portugal.

The veteran Manchester City skipper over-stretched in an attempt to make a tackle and was immediately replaced during he goalless draw.

But Martinez has elected to take the 32-year-old and is hopeful that he will be good to go when the competition gets underway, despite admitting that uncertainty will continue to surround Kompany's fitness for the next 7-10 days.

"We are going to take the time we get for Kompany, which is up to the day before our first match," said Martinez, who has kept Laurent Ciman with the squad on stand by. "Kompany has been performing strongly in the training camp and his leadership is essential for us.

"We want to give him every opportunity to be there. It is a World Cup, not a friendly international, so we take this exceptional decision.

"The scan is not going to be decisive, we still need seven to ten days to see if he is ready.

"Kompany's strength is that he has a real winning mentality, which we have seen again, going from deep disappointment during the match to determined work yesterday with the physios."

"I have faith in our medical staff and we will work together to make this a success. If Vincent is not fit on June 17, he will not be there, but we have to use that period, we give him time."

Misfiring Palace striker Benteke, who scored just two league goals in 2017-18, has missed out however.

Chelsea forward Michy Batshuayi has been preferred following his fine end-of-season form at Borussia Dortmund.

"He did everything during this camp, leaving him at home was the hardest decision," said Martinez of the Palace star's omission.

"I choose the balance in the team, so I only take two deep strikers."

Tottenham trio Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele and Toby Alderweireld have all been included. Eden Hazard, Marouane Fellaini, Simon Mignolet and Romelu Lukaku are also included, while the major surprise is West Brom's Nacer Chadli.

The 28-year-old made just five Premier League appearances for the relegated-Baggies, totalling just 214 minutes, and hasn't started a game since October 21.

Goalkeepers: Koen Casteels, Thibaut Courtois, Simon Mignolet

Defenders: Toby Alderweireld, Dedryck Boyata, Vincent Kompany, Thomas Meunier, Thomas Vermaelen, Jan Vertonghen

Midfielders: Yannick Carrasco, Nacer Chadli, Leander Dendoncker, Kevin de Bruyne, Mousa Dembele, Marouane Fellaini, Eden Hazard, Thorgan Hazard, Adnan Januzaj, Youri Tielemans, Axel Witsel

Forwards: Michy Batshuayi, Dries Mertens, Romelu Lukaku

Russia have named a largely domestic-based squad for the 2018 World Cup.

All but two of the hosts' 23-man squad play in Russia, with Villarreal's Denis Cheryshev and goalkeeper Vladimir Gabulov of Club Brugge the exceptions.

Defender Sergei Ignashevich, who turns 39 in July, was a late addition in place of the injured Ruslan Kambolov.

Former Chelsea winger Yuri Zhirkov and Artem Dzubya, Alan Dzagoev, Igor Akinfeev are other high-profile inclusions.

Aleksey and Anton Miranchuk will be the first twins to play at a World Cup since Philip and David Degen of Switzerland at Germany in 2006.

Russia play Saudi Arabia in the opening match of the tournament on 14 June, before facing Egypt and Uruguay in Group A.

    Russia squad
Goalkeepers: Igor Akinfeev (CSKA Moscow), Vladimir Gabulov (Club Brugge), Andrey Lunev (Zenit St Petersburg).

Manchester City winger Leroy Sane has been left out of Germany's final 23-man World Cup squad.

Sane, Bayer Leverkusen pair Bernd Leno and Jonathan Tah and Freiburg striker Nils Petersen were all dropped as Joachim Low cut the defending champions' 27-man provisional squad.

Keeper Manuel Neuer, who came back after nine months out in Saturday's 2-1 defeat by Austria, is in the squad.

Three Premier League players are selected.

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger, City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan and Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil have all been named in the squad.

Germany are in Group F with Mexico, Sweden and South Korea, and play their first match on Sunday, 17 June.

Sane being dropped from the squad was a surprise after an excellent season with City, which saw him named the Premier League's young player of the year.

He scored 14 goals and assisted 19 in all competitions as City won the league with five games to spare. Midfielder Ozil scored five times and made 14 assists for Arsenal.

However Ozil did create 84 chances in the Premier League, compared to Sane's 58.

Low said it was a "very close decision" between Sane and Julian Brandt, who scored 12 goals and made seven assists for fifth-placed Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen this year.

Sane had played in six of Germany's past seven games, including starting in their most recent game - Saturday's 2-1 loss to Austria.

Goalkeepers: Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona), Kevin Trapp (Paris St-Germain)

Defenders: Jerome Boateng (Bayern Munich), Matthias Ginter (Borussia Monchengladbach), Jonas Hector (Cologne), Mats Hummels (Bayern Munich), Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich), Marvin Plattenhardt (Hertha Berlin), Antonio Rudiger (Chelsea), Niklas Sule (Bayern Munich)

Midfielders: Julian Brandt (Bayer Leverkusen), Julian Draxler (Paris St-Germain), Leon Goretska (Schalke), Ilkay Gundogan (Manchester City), Sami Khedira (Juventus), Toni Kroos (Real Madrid), Mesut Ozil (Arsenal), Sebastian Rudy (Bayern Munich)

Strikers: Mario Gomez (Stuttgart), Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich), Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund), Timo Werner (RB Leipzig)

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been named in Egypt's World Cup squad despite being injured in the Champions League final.

Salah, 25, will not meet up with his team-mates until 9 June as he continues his recovery from a shoulder injury, his national team said.

Egypt's opening World Cup fixture is against Uruguay on 15 June.

They meet hosts Russia on 19 June and conclude their campaign in Group A against Saudi Arabia on 25 June.

Salah struck a 95th-minute penalty in the final qualification game to send Egypt to the World Cup for the first time in 28 years.

But in the Champions League final against Real Madrid, Salah left the pitch in tears midway through the first half after landing heavily on his shoulder following a challenge by Sergio Ramos.

Egypt's national team doctor said he met Salah soon after the final and subsequently confirmed his absence "would not exceed" three weeks.

Hector Cuper's Egypt drew 0-0 against Colombia in Italy on Friday without Salah.

Salah will also miss Wednesday's final friendly with Belgium, but will meet up with his team-mates once they return to Cairo for an open training session on 9 June prior to their departure for Russia.

    Egypt squad
Goalkeepers: Essam El Hadary (Al Taawoun), Mohamed El-Shennawy (Al Ahly), Sherif Ekramy (Al Ahly).

Defenders: Ahmed Fathi, Saad Samir, Ayman Ashraf (all Al Ahly), Mahmoud Hamdy (Zamalek), Mohamed Abdel-Shafy (Al Fateh), Ahmed Hegazi (West Brom), Ali Gabr (Zamalek), Ahmed Elmohamady (Aston Villa), Omar Gaber (Los Angeles FC).

Midfielders: Tarek Hamed, (Zamalek), Shikabala (Zamalek), Abdallah Said (Al Ahli), Sam Morsy (Wigan Athletic), Mohamed Elneny (Arsenal), Mahmoud Kahraba (Al Ittihad), Ramadan Sobhi (Stoke City), Mahmoud Hassan (Kasimpasa), Amr Warda (Atromitos Athens).

Forwards: Marwan Mohsen (Al Ahly), Mohamed Salah (Liverpool).

We all know the famous line – ‘you can’t win anything with kids’.

Alan Hansen was talking about Manchester United in the Premier League back in August 1995, but many believe the same about football on the international stage.

Received wisdom suggests you need a few elder statesmen who have experienced not only international tournaments but the highs and lows of the beautiful game.

With all the World Cup 2018 squads confirmed there are plenty of differences in the average ages of those nations participating in Russia.

But which countries have the youngest average age? Scroll down to find out…
