Darren Berry rejects Pakistan fielding coach job [Update Post #27]

Mickey Arthur's preferred option as the next fielding coach is Darren Berry.

Berry played for South Australia and Victoria during a 15 year First-Class career.

Let's see if Berry agrees a deal with PCB to replace Steve Rixon.

He is also the fielding coach for Islamabad United. So he already has the experience of working with Pakistani players. His credentials are also pretty impressive.

He will be a good choice IMO.

He worked with our players for over 3 years but our fielding didn't improve much. Look at what Rixon did, the results are for all to see. I remember Fountain posting a tweet about fielders as not being hungry enough which he likened to not thirsty enough horses and him being a fountain or sth

Given PCB putting up ad for new coach, wonder if this mean's that Berry is not interested?

Could be standard procedure so that no Buzurg can challenge later. Berry will apply online with many others - then PCB might short list 3/4 for interview. Say Berry, Shoaib Md., Ijaz & Mansoor Rana - it won’t be any issue for HR audit in future.

Darren Berry is a fantastic modern coach; I think he is a bit over qualified for fielding coach only; may be Arthur is looking for someone capable of being his deputy. He won’t be cheap for sure.

Shohaib Mohammed in 1992 was a fantastic fielder but I don’t know now where he is or what he’s doing. Just saying Pakistan has some good fielders but the problem is ground fielding on grounds that don’t allow for diving and sliding inevitably causes problems in development. Australia England New Zealand and South Africa have quite lush outfields even at the under 19 level so they can slide and dive without injury from a young age.

The better Pakistan fielders are those that have had early playing experience in these overseas countries.

Pakistan to tour Zimbabwe without fielding coach

Pakistan will be without a fielding coach on their upcoming tour of Zimbabwe. Australia’s Darren Berry, who has been shortlisted for the job, informed Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that he won’t be able to join the team before the Asia Cup in September due to his existing commitments in Australia. The former Australian first class wicketkeeper-batsman, who played for South Australia and Victoria and has also taken to top coaching positions at the state level, has apparently been recommended by Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur.

Berry’s name was shortlisted after fellow Australian Steve Rixon completed his contract with the PCB and left for home after the T20 series in Scotland instead of preferring to extend his contract. Though officially the reason given for Rixon not wanting to continue as fielding coach was family commitments, but it is no secret that he had issues with the PCB over the non-compliance of some of the clauses in his contract. He is said to have even refused to come to the ground on the eve of the second Test at Headingley in England in June after his monthly salary was delayed.

Pakistan is set to play 5 ODIs in Zimbabwe starting July 13. There will also be a triangular T20 International tournament involving Australia and Zimbabwe.

From the sound of it, its PCB's fault apparently. There to blame for lack of effort, they kept on delaying the signing of his contract to the point where Darren had enough and chipped. Well done PCB.

LONDON: Former Australian state team cricketer Darren Berry has rejected the role of the Pakistan fielding coach which was offered to him by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The wicket-keeper/batsman, who is currently working with the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Islamabad United, believes that it is too soon for him to take the full-time International job.

“I’m extremely thankful for the opportunity presented by Mickey Arthur and the PCB. After healthy discussions between the PCB and myself, I have decided that at this point in time with a young family [Berry has three children] that full-time international travel was a bridge too far right now,” Berry was quoted as saying.

“I will continue to work with Islamabad United in the PSL and will keep an open mind in relation to international coaching opportunities in the future,” he added.

The right-hand batsman was considered for the job after Pakistan’s former fielding coach Steve Rixon decided not to renew his contract citing personal and professional reasons.

Before getting associated with Islamabad United, Berry, who played 153 first-class matches from 1989 to 2004, spent four years with domestic team South Australia and guided them to 2010-11 Big Bash victory.

Credit to him for choosing to parent a young family. Hopefully in the near future that can change and he can do something internationally.

Nice of him to try and not blame PCB. If this was about his family, he wouldn't even have been in consideration for this long.

I'm sure @Saj or @MenInG will confirm this sooner or later, but this was incompetence by the PCB, not just him choosing his family
