"We've still got the best depth of any cricket nation in the world" : Ricky Ponting

Australia are in the midst of their worst ever one-day international streak, but legendary former captain Ricky Ponting insists they will be a force at next year's World Cup.

Led by first-time ODI skipper Tim Paine and new coach Justin Langer, Australia were last month handed a 5-0 drubbing by world No.1 ODI side England in the United Kingdom, the venue for next year's showpiece event.

Australia, the reigning one-day world champions, have now lost 16 of their past 18 ODIs (the worst 18-game stretch in their 47-year ODI history) and have lost their four most recent bilateral 50-over series (the first time they have ever lost that many series on the trot).

But Ponting, a three-time World Cup winner and twice as captain, boldly asserted Australia will be able to match it with the best when they begin their title defence in June next year.

"One thing I do know is we've got still the best depth of any cricket nation in the world and I will continue to say that," the 43-year-old said at a Channel Seven promotional event. "We'll keep producing great players.

"It's only 12 months away from the next one-day World Cup. The last five games - (while) the results did not quite go our way, it gave an opportunity for some younger guys to get some games under their belts.

"There are 16 one-dayers to be played between now and the next World Cup.

"I'll guarantee you when you put the Australian group of 15 players down on a sheet of paper, that group will line up as good as any other team in the world."

Australia will host both South Africa and India for three-match ODI series this summer, while the International Cricket Council's Future Tours Programme has the Aussies down for five-ODI tours of both India and Pakistan in February and March next year.

Fitness pending, at least four first-choice players missing from the England whitewash due to injury Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitch Marsh look set to resume their places for those forthcoming one-dayers at home.

But banned duo Steve Smith and David Warner will not. Their suspensions from the Cape Town ball tampering incident run through to late March, which may leave them short of 50-over match practice before the World Cup.

It leaves a lot of question marks for Australia's limited-overs brains trust, yet Ponting is confident Langer is creating a dressing room culture that players will thrive in during the coming years.

"The environment Justin Langer will create around that team will be a place that everyone will just get better, they'll just improve, they'll love the environment," said Ponting, who will commentate for Channel Seven this summer.

"I'm really excited about what the future holds not just right now but for the next 20 years. We are a passionate cricket nation that keeps producing good players.

"We've got some seriously good players that at their best will challenge any team in the world in any conditions."

After helping out as an assistant to Langer during the England ODI series, Ponting also confirmed on Tuesday he plans to continue working with Australia's limited-overs sides when time permits.

I guess when you put Warner, Smith & Starc back in the line up, it does look a quality team.

Sorry Ponting but I disagree. Some of your second string players are mediocre.

They have good depth. I don't disagree. Just because they lost it doesn't mean they don't have depth. Problem is each time you collect bunch of fringe players they fail not because they don't have the ability but because they take time to gel as a team. Biggest challenge while testing bench strength is that not the quality itself.

Will be interesting re: Smith and Warner when they come back IF they get in the team.

I guess those are the decisions you get paid for.

I would have agreed to it around a month back but from what we saw during england odi series, Australia has one of the worst batting lineups. They can't play spin and they can't score fast.

Australia's biggest problem as been finding a decent wicket keeper batsman. None of the options they have tried recently worked for them. A full strength team should look like this. It is a good outfit but not really among the top 3.

    1. Warner
    2. Finch
    3. Smith
    4. S Marsh
    5. Maxwell/Head
    6. M Marsh
    7. Wicket-keeper?
    8. Cummins
    9. Starc
    10. Hazlewood
    11. Zampa

No good spinner, no quality middle order batsman other than Smith and a pretty mediocre keeper batsman. On top of that bench strength is really weak.

They always do well in world cups so cant right them off but overall its not a world beater team and rightly 6th ranked

Full side got destroyed in their own backyard in January. Lost to England in the CT last year, got saved against NZ due to rain. Lost in NZ before that. Aussies have been a poor ODI side away for the last 2 years.

I don't see them making the semis next WC.

I won't write off Aus in WC despite some poor performances. I also agree with Ponting about depth, but I think depth is mainly true for pace bowlers.

They are in the same position they were in the 2011 WC and 2013 CT. "Depth" but no real threatening batsman and no true bowlers, just bits and pieces guys with a mediocre WK/batsman.

WC19 is in England and no pace bowler can save them on these small pattas.Even Starc was manhandled twice in Australia itself. And apart from Smith, none of them can play spin or even swing.Warner was all at sea against Bhuvi when he found some swing in India in last bilateral.

I think Hazlewood and Starc must be in ODI lineup. Plus a decent spinner. Agar is not the right choice. Where is Adam Zampa? And then with Smith and Warner in ranks, it will be one of the changing teams again

A full-strength Aus side defeated England 5-0 at home, lost in a competitive 1-2 series in India and would have took apart most teams.

A team with an ATG batsmen, a great batsmen and few good batsmen and agreat bowling attack of S.C.H.L won't be quite for too long.

Their best team with Steve and Warner back will still be a world beating team.

But a nation with great depth will have some younger batting and bowling coming through every 5-6 years. Australia have had none since a Warner and Smith in 2010-11, bowling unit is also mostly at least 5 years old and they had to go to a Siddle as reserve pacer.

Pointing as a pundit is far too biased towards Australia (not bad per se but his predictions have been more emotional and less realistic).

    Also Ricky Ponting:

"India should play Shami, umesh and Ishant/Bhuvi as their first choice attack" (before the adelaide test)

"Cheteshwar batted too slow for the match"

"I tip Khawaja to be the leading scorer"

Here we go again lol. Just cannot be happy at all can you ? Addicted to self loathing by any chance?

Both Smith and Warner have never played against Bumrah but yeah I guess these things don't matter. It is a sure shot guarantee that Indian players will suck no matter who and in what form but the reverse is a dead certain guarantee. Laughable.

A considerably bad Ind team only lost 0-2 to full strength Aus last time with one loss being the result of going for a big 4th day chase when they couldve played easily for a draw.

Good point and that too without Bumrah.
