Zimbabwe vs Pakistan | 4th ODI | Bulawayo | July 20, 2018 | Pakistan Innings

Overview
Zimbabwe v Pakistan
Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo
4th ODI
Friday 20 July, 09:15 local, 07:15 GMT

After a humbling at the hands of the visitors Ė Zimbabwe were bowled out for 67 in the third ODI Ė the hosts will be itching to put their game together and prevent a whitewash.

Zimbabwe have just not clicked as a team in any of the three games played so far and consequently Pakistan have dominated.

Pakistan won the first ODI by a massive 201 runs and the following two games by nine wickets. Zimbabwe's highest team total in the series so far has been 194 while Pakistan notched up 308 in the first ODI.

The stark contrast between the two sides can also be put down to Zimbabwe lacking many of their gun players for various reasons. A young Zimbabwe side, thus, has been found lacking against an experienced and in-form Pakistan.

While Faheem Ashraf was the wrecker-in-chief for the visitors in their series-clinching game with his five-wicket haul, Usman Khan Shinwari (seven wickets from three games) has been equally effective. They have been assisted by leg-spinner Shadab Khan (five wickets).

Among the batters, Fakhar Zaman seems to be in the form of his life, having notched up 220 runs in the series at a strike rate of 98.65 with a century Ė 117* Ė in the second ODI.

The hosts made several changes to their playing XI for the third ODI with Prince Masvaure replacing Brian Chari, Elton Chigumbura coming in for Tendai Chatara and Liam Roche, who was handed his ODI cap this series, dropped after two matches. However, none of these changes to could inspire any confidence.

To add to Zimbabwe's woes, Pakistan chased down the target of 68 in just 9.5 overs. The visitors, charging towards a series whitewash, may be tempted to make a few changes to their XI, bringing in Yasir Shah, their premier Test spinner, left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz and opening bat Haris Sohail.

Key players

Hamilton Masakadza (Zimbabwe): When the going gets tough, it is the leader who has to lead from the front. Zimbabwe will expect their captain and one of the most experienced batsmen, Masakadza, to come out of his lean patch and get among the runs.

Fakhar Zaman (Pakistan): The Pakistan opener averages a majestic 220 in the series from three games and he will be the No.1 threat for Zimbabwe. His partnerships with Imam-ul-Haq have been crucial for Pakistan at the top of the order.

Conditions: Bulawayo is likely to be cold throughout the day with temperatures ranging between 7 and 17įC. 58% humidity is forecast and a precipitation of 10%, which means that the game could go on without any hindrance as has been the case throughout the series.

Squad:

Zimbabwe: Hamilton Masakadza (c), Tinashe Kamunhukamwe, Ryan Murray, Peter Moor, Tarisai Musakanda, Blessing Muzarabani, Liam Nicholas Roche, Malcolm Waller, Brian Chari, Chamu Chibhabha, Elton Chigumbura, Tendai Chisoro, Tendai Chatara, Wellington Masakadza, Richard Ngarava, Donald Tiripano

Pakistan: Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Hafeez, Shoaib Malik, Babar Azam, Asif Ali, Sarfraz Ahmed (c), Mohammad Nawaz, Shadab Khan, Faheem Ashraf, Mohammad Amir, Junaid Khan, Usman Khan, Yasir Shah, Hasan Ali, Haris Sohail

It's frustrating to see that Imam has made his runs to be a lock selection for next ODI matches when he hasn't deserved it to be honest.

He is poor at strike rotation, lacks range of shots, has no power hitting ability and somehow leaves short and wide deliveries well into the match. He is young enough to improve but he's very mediocre LOI batsmen right now.

People here should understand that if a player scores a hundred in an odi then that vastly improves the chances of that team winning...

Imam so far doing well and if he converts this one to a century then thatís good for the team.

So far in the few games heís played heís already scored two centuries so itís a little it early to be getting the knives out.

Struggling to rotate strike against ordinary bowlers here. Good bowlers will blast him out. Frustrating part is he has shown no inclination to try something different, specially im the comfort zone he is in right now. Very poor batsman

since when did just holding on to your wicket become the template for modern odi cricket?

why not just stick with azhar, who at least is proven performer in big tourneys, ie the CT?

But you wonít know that until heís played against the better teams.
So far heís scored runs in the few games he has played. Heís shown temperament to stick in their when he hasnít been able to score quickly but even more importantly heís gone onto score centuries...

Someone who scores centuries will win you games especially in ODIís.

So thatís why I say keep the knives hidden for a while.

See how he played if Fakhar gets out early.
See how he handles the pressure then...

Imam so far doing well and if he converts this one to a century then that’s good for the team.

So far in the few games he’s played he’s already scored two centuries so it’s a little it early to be getting the knives out.
imam does not look to me like someone who will score a century against a good side.

and he puts so much pressure on his partner. just bogs the game down.

Let's shift focus to Fakhar, time to get a double
Don't see us ascending from 7th/6th in the near future. 5-0 in England and South Africa awaits us, we will be lucky to even draw one match.
This Zimbabwe of all teams and his 4th match against them. Still failing to get a move he can hardly keep his SR at around 70. This is the team he should be feasting against. We need better alternatives.

Yes heís doing well.
Allowing Fakhar to play the way he does.

Both have faced 69 deliveries.

Fakhar has scored 73.

Imam has scored 50.

23 runs difference. That is the difference between winning and losing.

Since when is it a problem for Fakhar to score freely? Wouldn't rotating the strike be an even better way of enabling him, rather than blocking?

Fakhar is taking a few more undue risks than usual, as the commies have noted. No need to take on fielder in the deep a few overs back. Because Imam. Is. Not. Scoring?

What's up with these singles on the last delivery?

Surely he's playing a match losing innings here.

Someone who scores centuries will win you games especially in ODIís.

So thatís why I say keep the knives hidden for a while.

See how he played if Fakhar gets out early.
See how he handles the pressure then...
Played an ODI against New Zealand. Kept playing and missing against Boult when the ball was pitched up, eventually getting out to a mistimed pull straight to square leg. He's young and should be given time, but he needs to stamp his authority when the situation is relatively easier. If he's content to play at a SR of 70 against a depleted Zimbabwe side, what do you expect his thought process to be when he's up against the best bowlers in the world?

3 dots then a single. Garbage. Reminds me of Misbah and Younis back in the day.

So a SELFISH 50 was all he needed?

Breaking the shackles after a 50.

SELFIE GONE, but you guys have found another opener with SELFISH approach.

Lol again retaining the strike. This is annoying.

Imam is clearly an improvement over Azhar. He has a wider array of shots and unlike the 33 year old stroke-less wonder.

He is quite similar to the 2013-14 version of Shehzad, who would score hundreds but his low strike rate and poor rotation meant that any innings where he didnít convert was pretty much useless.

Why does he hog the strike? Taking a single on the last ball only to waste 4 balls from the next over.
