Who will be the next President of Pakistan?

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday nominated former provincial information minister Shah Farman for the slot of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) governor.

The decision was taken during a consultative meeting chaired by the party chairman Imran Khan at his residence in Bani Gala, who ultimately approved to nominate Farman for the coveted post.

In the July 25 general elections, Farman won the PK-70 and PK-71 Peshawar constituencies. He, however, lost the PK-70 seat after a vote recount to Awami National Party’s (ANP) Khushdil Khan.

Following announcement of his nomination, Shah Farman along with K-P CM Mehmood Khan met Imran at Bani Gala to hold consultation about formation of the provincial cabinet.

Similarly, sources claim that name of senior party leader Dr Arif Alvi has been finalised as next President of Pakistan. While, PTI vice-chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi will be given foreign affairs ministry.

    Punjab CM

Among a couple of claimants for the slot of Punjab chief minister, an MPA from Lahore Mian Muhammad Aslam Iqbal has emerged as the likeliest candidate for the top position while PTI has announced it will officially name nominee for the slot today (Thursday).

Meanwhile, Imran has kept his cards close to his chest and is not sharing even with his closest aides his possible choice for Punjab’s top slot. “I am not sure as [Imran] is keeping it to himself. But I suspect it could be Mian Aslam Iqbal. May be I prove totally wrong,” a close aide to PTI chief informed when asked about possible nominee. Another senior leader also confirmed this development adding Dr Yasmin Rashid is still in race.

Earlier, PTI decided to put off the announcement of party’s candidate for this slot on the request of its ally, PML-Q, that apprehended that announcement of name at this stage could create rifts among party MPAs in the province requesting it should be announced after the election of speaker and deputy speaker in the Punjab Assembly.

    Federal cabinet

Another important decision made by PTI’s central leadership is that prime minister-in-waiting Imran will keep an additional portfolio of Federal Minister for Interior, apparently because several party heavyweights — including former K-P CM Pervaiz Khattak, Shafqat Mehmood and Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rasheed were strongly lobbying for the position.

A senior party leader said the decision is political in nature and probably to avoid rifts among senior leadership. “It’s likely that once all heavyweights will be given their respective portfolios in next federal cabinet, Iman may appoint a person of his choice as interior minister at a later stage,” he predicted.

For the information ministry, Senator Faisal Javed and PTI spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry are strong contenders, while the name of Senator Shibli Faraz is doing the rounds for commerce minister.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, PTI spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry said that the party was holding consultation to finalise next cabinet and announcement to this effect would be made within next three days.

PPP nominates Aitzaz Ahsan as its presidential candidate: sources

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party has nominated Aitzaz Ahsan as its presidential candidate, sources said Sunday.

The party chairperson and co-chairperson, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Asif Ali Zardari, nominated Ahsan from the president’s slot.

A day earlier, Prime Minister Imran Khan nominated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Arif Alvi for the same slot.

The Election Commission of Pakistan announced on Thursday that the presidential election will be held on September 4. Voting for the presidential election will be held in the National Assembly and the four provincial assemblies from 10am to 4pm.

According to the schedule issued by the electoral body, nomination papers for the presidential polls can be filed with the presiding officers in Islamabad and the four provinces by 12pm on August 27.

Scrutiny of the nomination papers will be conducted on August 29.

Candidature can be withdrawn by noon on August 30. The list of validated candidates will be published the same day at 1pm.

This will be very tough. PPP, PML-N, and independents + others have enough seats to win this election. PTI + allies will need to bring independents and others on board to win this. Either that, or we better hope that PPP and PML-N don't come to a consensus.

Watch out: Asif Ali Zardari aiming to get hold of Presidency in order to derail Imran Khan's govt.

Zardari is eyeing the President post. Currently he's nominated Aitzaz Hassan but may put himself forward at the last minute.

It will mean he will get pardoned if he is convicted and also he will try his best to make it difficult for Imran's Govt and a PPP President could even bring Imran's Govt to an end.

Very difficult for Arif Alvi to win as PTI does not have the numbers in Senate to overall win the Presidential election. Zardari is already working on getting a hold on the position with his man or himself.

I urge everyone to watch Dr Shahid Masood's show from today. You'll find it on YouTube and he explains the details.

September 4th. It depends on many factors, no one is really in a commanding position. PTI will probably need to convince other parties/independents in the senate and in Balochistan too. Either that or if PML-N don't agree on Aitzaz Ahsan, then PTI will win by virtue of having the highest number of votes.

President does not require a majority, Dr Arif Alvi just needs to get the highest number of votes.

    Election of President
    Article 41

    18.
    (1) The Chief Election Commissioner shall determine the result of the election in the following manner, namely:-
    (a) the number of votes cast in the Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament) in favor of each candidate shall be counted;
    (b) the number of votes cast in a Provincial Assembly in favor of each candidate shall be multiplied by the total number of seats in the Provincial Assembly for the time being having the smallest number of seats and divided by the total number of seats in the Provincial Assembly in which the votes have been cast; and
    (c) the number of votes calculated in the manner referred to in clause (b) shall be added to the number of votes counted under clause (a).
Explanation: In this paragraph, "total number of seats" includes seats reserved for non-Muslims and women.

    (2) A fraction shall be rounded off to the nearest whole.

    19. The candidate who has obtained the largest number of votes compiled in the manner specified in paragraph 18 shall be declared by the Chief Election Commissioner to be elected.

    20. Where at any poll any two or more candidates obtain an equal number of votes, the selection of the candidate to be elected shall be by drawing of lots.

PPP wants PML-N to back Aitzaz in return for endorsing Shehbaz as opposition leader

Former Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif is all set to become leader of the opposition in the National Assembly after over 100 lawmakers endorsed him for the slot.

After lots of political bickering seen during the election to the leader of the house between the two leading political parties – Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) – the environment has changed altogether.

According to PPP officials, they have submitted signatures of their lawmakers with Speaker Asad Qaiser, recommending Shehbaz as leader of the opposition in the lower house of parliament.
PPP’s Nafisa Shah told The Express Tribune that they recommended Shehbaz because the PML-N is the second largest party in the house and therefore it was their right and “we do not want to create any hurdles in their way”.

“Our Chairman Bilawal Bhutto has signed the nomination and showed his grace towards the PML-N by recommending Shehbaz for the slot,” Shah said, adding; however, in return the PPP wants the PML-N to support our candidate for the office of president of Pakistan.

According to the speaker’s office, over 100 members from the opposition have submitted the nomination with their signatures. The formal notification will be issued on Monday (today).

The PPP had stayed away from voting for Shehbaz during election to the leader of the house against Imran Khan. “Not all of us (54 members) but many of us who were present on Thursday submitted the nomination,” Shah said.

The PPP on Sunday announced fielding former senator and senior party leader Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan against PTI’s Arif Alvi.

“Ahsan has been nominated keeping his struggle for federalism and democracy and we will now seek other parties’ support for him,” she concluded.

The Awami National Party has appreciated the PPP’s move in a press note.

“The nomination of Shehbaz is a welcome move that will go a long way bringing opposition parties on a united stand,” the note said, adding the PPP candidate was better compared to the PTI’s.

Former Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Haider Khan Hoti is lone lawmaker representing the ANP in the National Assembly.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced that presidential elections would be held on September 4.

A notification issued by the commission outlined the procedure for presidential poll in pursuance of provisions contained in paragraphs 1 and 3 of the Second Schedule read with clause (3) and (5) of the Constitution.

The nomination forms will be available at the ECP Secretariat and the offices of provincial election commissioners. The nomination papers will be submitted to presiding officers in Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar, Lahore and Quetta by 12pm on August 27 and the presiding officers — include provincial chief justices of high courts.

The scrutiny will begin on August 29 while the candidates will have until noon August 30 to withdraw after which the final list will be made public on the same day.

Polling will be conducted from 10am to 4pm on September 4 at the Parliament House in Islamabad and provincial assemblies in Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and Quetta.

Members of the NA and four provincial assemblies would be the voters in the election of the 13th president. The incumbent president was appointed by PML-N in September 2013.

Also, during the 90s perhaps you might have heard how presidents consistently worked to bring down elected governments.

Pakistan's electoral system is honestly a joke, serious constitutional reforms are needed. Unfortunately, it's not possible without a 2/3 majority.

    At an absolute bare minimum:
    -President should be directly elected.
    -Senate should be directly elected.

If the above two reforms are done, there would be no chance of PPP or PML-N grabbing the presidency despite the people giving their mandate to PTI, nor would any horse-trading occur in senate or presidential elections.

There are of course several other reforms that I would like to see, but the above two things should be an absolute bare minimum. Power should go to the people, democracy should be strengthened. The current system is only partly democratic, there is a lot of improvement needed.

Zardari can't become president as ppp ****** off pmln by not voting for Shebaz Sharif for PM. None of the 3 parties can get a president on their own. No way pmln votes for Zardari. According to the constitution, the president does not need a majority, he just needs the highest number of votes. A split opposition plays right into PTI's hands.

    So according to Wikepedia

The Electoral College of Pakistan is formed by a joint sitting of the six leading political bodies in Pakistan:

    the Senate of Pakistan,
    the National Assembly of Pakistan,
the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab,
    the Provincial Assembly of Sindh,
the Provincial Assembly of Balochistan and
the Provincial Assembly of Khyber Paktunkhwa

So that each province has an equal vote, all provincial assemblies are given exactly 65 votes in the electoral college. This mean that the each member of the Punjab Assembly has 65/370 = 0.176 votes, each member of the Sindh Assembly has 65/168 = 0.387 votes, each member of the KPK Assembly has 65/124 = 0.524 votes and each member of the Balochistan Assembly has 65/65 = 1 vote.
We have an overwhelming majority in KPK. And if our allies in Balochistan and the National assembly vote for Arif Alvi we may be able to pull it off.

The main issue is that out of the 108 Senate seats PTIs coalition only holds 27. This will probably mean 81 votes in favor of Aitzaz Ahsan, unless if PML-N decides to not vote for PPP or push forward their own candidate.

"100 Days Plan" is key. If PTI can create a public perception of moving in right direction, no one can threat PTI but PTI itself. With positive wave, PTI can always play for early elections and win more comprehensively. Opposition knows it and they can't dare threatening PTI for At least 2 years.

PMLN and PPP meeting today to discuss President candidate. Aitzaz Hassan may not be put forward now.

The two crook parties are at it again today trying every trick in the book to save their corrupt behinds.

They are meeting today to discuss the Presidential candidate.

Aitzaz Hassan's name might be taken back and a new name, possibly from PMLN might be put forward.

The whole purpose is to set free and protect the crooks from both sides who might be or have already been caught by NAB.

Remember the President can pardon and also refuse to sign certain orders sent by the PM. By doing this he will put huge barriers in front of the PTI Govt.

Expect Zardari and Nawaz to get their cheque books out in order to buy votes in the Presidential election.

PTI is still ahead right now. PML-N, PPP, MMA, and ANP are going to have to rope in pretty much all the small non-government parties, as well as almost all of the independents to have a chance of winning.

Remember that a majority is not needed for presidential elections, you just need the highest number of votes.

MQM confirms support for Arif Alvi

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) nominee for the slot of president Arif Alvi on Tuesday visited the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) office in order to seek the party’s support in the upcoming presidential poll.

After long deliberations at the party’s Bahadurabad office, the MQM leaders announced their support for PTI’s candidate in the September 4 election. It is pertinent to mention here that MQM-P is already a part of the PTI-led government in the Centre and voted for PTI nominees Asad Qaiser, Qasim Suri in polls for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of National Assembly and later supported party chairman Imran Khan’s bid to become the country’s 22nd prime minister, earlier this month.

During the joint press conference, Alvi talking about the meeting said they discussed various issues including presidential election too. “We are forming a task force for the issues of Sindh and discussed its formation including the names to be included,” said Alvi whose party and MQM-P are both part of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly.
“The party has nominated me for the slot of president and I was here to request their [MQM]’s support,” stated the NA-243 winner who would now have to vacate his seat if he becomes the president of the country, succeeding Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s Mamnoon Hussain.

Alvi thanking MQM for its support in electing Imran as the premier said that the party has assured their vote for him against Pakistan Peoples Party’s nominee Aitzaz Ahsan for the president’s post.

Backing Alvi’s announcement MQM-P leader Khali Maqbool Siddiqui added that his party is already a coalition partner of PTI and hence would also support their candidate in the upcoming polls.

The dentist-turned-politician said that PTI would also support MQM’s demand to empower local bodies system in Sindh and redress their other issues too. “Karachi has played pivotal role in electing incumbent prime minister and it would again play the role to elect president of this country,” he remarked.

Senior PTI leaders including Firdous Shamim Naqvi, Haleem Adil Shaikh accompanied Alvi for the meeting.

The polls for selecting the country’s next President will be held on Sept 4 where the Senate, NA and all four provincial assemblies would place their votes in support for those in run for presidency.

As far as the numbers go, PTI is currently the largest party in the national assembly with 158 seats followed by PML-N with 82 seats. While PPP and MQM-P were successful in clinching 53 and seven seats respectively after the addition of reserved and minority seats

PML-N, PPP agree to field joint candidate

LAHORE: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) met on Tuesday in an effort to sort out differences emerged between the parties over the election of the president.

PPP’s unilateral decision to nominate senior party leader and legal wizard Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan as its candidate for the country’s top constitutional post has widened cracks in the alliance of opposition parties.

The PPP without consulting the opposition has decided to field Ahsan in presidential election scheduled for September 4 against the nominee of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Dr Arif Alvi.Taking exception to the PPP’s unilateral decision, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Sunday had categorically stated that Ahsan could not be considered a joint opposition candidate because the PPP had not consulted any of the parties sitting on the opposition benches before making the decision.

The PML-N is also angry because the PPP refused to vote for its president Shehbaz Sharif in the Aug 17 election for the office of prime minister.

However, the two sides met at the residence of Shehbaz Sharif to discuss the upcoming presidential elections.

On Tuesday, the PML-N, while expressing reservations over the PPP move, requested it to at least change its candidate “if it wants the PML-N’s support”, The Express Tribune has learnt.

PPP’s senior leaders Khursheed Shah and Raza Rabbani met Shehbaz Sharif and other senior leader to chalk out a joint strategy for the upcoming presidential elections.

PPP leaders discussed the decision of their party to pitch Ahsan against PTI’s Arif Alvi.

The PML-N senior leadership present during the meeting told The Express Tribune that the party had communicated its dismay over not consulting it and other allied opposition parties, but also expressed its reservations over the very name of Ahsan.

No PPP support for Shehbaz’s PM candidature: Khursheed Shah

The PML-N had taken exception to Ahsan’s remarks over the illness of former first lady, Kulsoom Nawaz.

The PPP delegation was told to communicate the concerns of the party to its top leadership and suggested the PPP to forward a new name for the slot.

The PPP has also been asked to bring any new name in the multi-party conference and get it accepted from that platform for the sake of keeping the opposition alliance intact.

The PML-N source revealed that the MPC has been called on August 25 at Murree where the joint candidate for the presidential election will be decided.

He said that PML-N despite being double crossed once by the PPP has no option but to move ahead with a joint candidate for the presidential election, if it wanted to challenge the PTI.

The source said it would be an easy win for PTI if the opposition gets divided.

Former Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal, briefing the media after the meeting said, “We want all opposition parties to bring a joint candidate for the upcoming presidential election.”

He said the PPP delegation also agreed on the suggestion of fielding a consensus candidate. “The PML-N will move forward with the idea of joint opposition.”

Another senior party leader said if all opposition parties get united, the difference of votes between the PTI and the opposition’s would hardly be 8 to 10.

He said that a joint candidate option could only work, if the PPP came in the MPC meeting with an open mind.

He said that if it arrived in the meeting to divide the opposition, then the PML-N would be forced to back off.

He said that PML-N has been fooled once by the PPP and it should not expected the PML-N to be fooled twice.

Another important revelation that he made was that PML-N President Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif was reconsidering his narrative that he put up during the last one year or more.

He said, “Shehbaz has realised that his soft stand is not winning him any hearts in the establishment and will not bring any concessions for him.”

The Election Commission of Pakistan has already announced the schedule for the presidential election which will be held on Sept 4 — five days before the expiry of the five-year term of President Mamnoon Hussain.

MULTAN: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Wednesday Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is pressuring Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) to withdraw Aitzaz Ahsan's name as the party's presidential candidate.

Speaking to the media here earlier today, Qureshi said the PPP must have put forward Ahsan’s name after consultation.

He hailed Ahsan’s performance as the opposition leader in the Senate from 1994 to 1999 while representing the PPP.

If Ahsan’s name is withdrawn it will mean burying ideological politics, he said, adding that the presidential candidate is a governor of ideological politics.

Speaking about Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s presidential candidate Dr Arif Alvi, he said Alvi belongs to the middle class.

About the overseas Pakistanis voting for the first time in the upcoming by-elections, the foreign minister said he is happy that it is finally happening.

'Working to bring home Dr Aafia Siddiqui'

On the subject of the detained Pakistani doctor Aafia Siddiqui in the United States, the foreign minister said he understands what her family must be going through.

"We are working to bring Dr Aafia Siddiqui home," he assured, while acknowledging the legal obligations of the process.

'Water crisis a result of mishaps'

About the ongoing water crisis gripping the nation, Qureshi blamed a series of mishaps for the problem.

"The mishaps have resulted in the water issue becoming a huge crisis," he said, pointing out that the previous governments had not focused on the water crisis.

He added that he backs the construction of Bhasha Dam and that Prime Minister Imran Khan has designated its construction as a top priority.

'Ready to talk to political parties over South Punjab province'

Referring to the PPP, Qureshi said their government was in power for five years and if they wanted they could have made the South Punjab province.

"Our government needs support from National Assembly and Senate for the South Punjab province," he said.

Qureshi added that he is ready to talk with other political parties over the new province.

"I am hopeful PPP will assist in talks regarding the new province."

You're right, the pardon can only be granted on the advice of the prime minister.
Similarly, temporary legislation i.e Ordinances can also be issued only on the advice of the prime minister.

PML-N leader and former information minister Pervez Rashid on Friday said that the party would consider supporting PPP leader Aitzaz Ahsan for the post of president "if he visits Adiala jail and apologises to Nawaz Sharif for his remarks".

Rashid, who did not specify which remarks by Ahsan he was referring to, was talking to reporters outside Adiala jail where Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam are currently serving the sentences handed to them by an accountability court.

When asked whether the PML-N would support Ahsan in the upcoming presidential elections, he said that the party has been consulting with other opposition parties and wants to field a joint candidate.

Cracks in the alliance of opposition parties have further widened following PPP's unilateral decision to nominate legal wizard Ahsan as its candidate for the post of president of the country.

PML-N, soon after PPP's announcement, had categorically stated that Ahsan could not be considered a joint opposition candidate as the latter had not consulted any of the parties sitting on the opposition benches before making the decision.

The PML-N is also angry because the PPP refused to vote for its president Shahbaz Sharif in the Aug 17 election for the office of prime minister only because of his controversial statements against the PPP leadership in the past, whereas the PPP has now nominated a person who had also made some unbecoming remarks about the illness of Nawaz Sharif and his wife Kulsoom Nawaz in recent past.

The PML-N has yet to announce a candidate for the presidential election. To reach a consensus on a joint candidate, the opposition parties are expected to meet after Eidul Azha.

The ruling coalition, led by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, has named MNA from Karachi Dr Arif Alvi as its candidate.

He comes across as a good guy, but would've preferred him as the face of our new nhs style health service etc. He's got too much to offer to be wasted in what's pretty much a ceremonial role, which would fit in with Nasira Iqbal perfectly. 1) she's pretty much retired 2) she's a highly qualified highly intelligent female who is respected by all Pakistani's, from patwari to Khoobi liberal, would really improve our PR game. I think the likes of Khattak kicking up a fuss stopped a dream cabinet happening.

Agreed, Dr Alvi is one of PTI's most valuable parliamentarians. I was looking forward to someone like Nasira Iqbal, who is very well respected across Pakistan, and would be our first female president too.

-He is from Karachi, Imran Khan wants to make up for all the years Karachi has been neglected.
-He is one of the founding members of PTI, gives the image that nazryati workers are being rewarded for their service.
-He is a very trustworthy guy.

2 of our last 3 Presidents were also from Karachi. The third lived in Karachi but was from Sindh. Don't know how putting up more Karachi presidents makes up for the neglect.

Agreed instead of giving token positions to Karachiites, they better start focusing on the real issues facing Karachi. I doubt the residents of Karachi could care less about the President and other positions given to Karachiites.

I have a big worry with PPP being in Sindh, Karachi/Sindh will be left behind the rest of Pakistan in the next 5 years as PPP will try their best to keep things at status quo in Sindh.

Karachi has already been left far behind, the city has been destroyed in the last 10 years while Punjab and KPK have thrived (relatively speaking) with heavy investments.

Karachi has gone from a livable city with reasonable infrastructure (Musharraf/Kamal era) to mass garbage dump in the last decade

Aitzaz, Fazl emerge as nominees for president after consensus eludes opposition alliance

With the grand opposition alliance failing to reach consensus on a single nominee, the PPP's Aitzaz Ahsan and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Monday emerged as the two candidates who will challenge Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) candidate Dr Arif Alvi in the September 4 presidential election.

The failure of the opposition parties to field a joint candidate is expected to provide a virtual walkover to Dr Alvi, an MNA from Karachi, for the president’s office.

Ahsan filed his papers for the presidential election hours before the 12-noon deadline on Monday. Meanwhile, a JUI-F spokesperson stated that Fazl would be the 'single nominee' of the opposition parties, to the exclusion of the PPP.

The JUI-F chief will submit his nomination papers as the candidate fielded by the PML-N, Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA), Awami National Party, Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party and National Party, the spokesperson told DawnNewsTV.

Sources in the opposition had earlier told Dawn that PPP and PML-N representatives directly and with the help of mediators remained in touch throughout Sunday in their bid to reach an understanding, but all their efforts failed due to the PPP’s refusal to withdraw Ahsan’s name.

A PPP delegation comprising Khursheed Shah, Naveed Qamar, Chaudhry Manzoor and Qamar Zaman Kaira had met PML-N leaders at the Parliament Lodges residence of former National Assembly speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq late on Sunday night, but left without talking to reporters who were waiting outside.

PML-N’s acting secretary general Ahsan Iqbal, however, had told media that they had been making "all-out efforts" to bring a joint opposition candidate and expressed hope that the PPP might show “flexibility”.

Iqbal had said if the opposition failed to agree on a consensus candidate, it would be a “setback” and a bad omen for democracy.

    Opposition in disarray

The grand alliance, which was formed by 11 opposition parties soon after the July 25 elections, had suffered a blow within weeks after its formation. The controversy had erupted following the PPP’s refusal to vote for PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif as a joint opposition candidate for the Prime Minister's Office despite agreeing on a formula during the previous multi-party conference that had authorised the PML-N to nominate its candidate for the PM’s election.

Later, the PPP nominated Ahsan as its candidate for the president. The PML-N leaders, who claimed that they had come to know about Ahsan’s nomination through the media, stated in categorical terms that Ahsan’s name could not be considered as the PPP had not consulted any of the opposition parties before making the decision and also because of his ‘nasty remarks’ over the illness of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his wife Kulsoom Nawaz.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan, the presidential election will be held on Sept 4 — five days before the expiry of the five-year term of President Mamnoon Hussain.
