    England vs India | 3rd Test | Nottingham | August 18-22, 2018 | Day 1 Thread

Ben Stokes recalled by England for third Test against India

Ben Stokes will return to England's line-up for the third Test against India on Saturday just days after being acquitted of affray.

All-rounder Stokes missed England's second-Test victory at Lord's to attend Bristol Crown Court, but was restored to the squad shortly after being cleared on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old, who took 4-40 as India stumbled to a 31-run defeat in the series opener at Edgbaston, comes back at the expense of Sam Curran, who misses out despite being named man of the match in the first Test.

England, already 2-0 up, can wrap up the five-Test series with two games still to play with victory in Nottingham.

Skipper Joe Root Root admitted that dropping Curran was "probably one of the most difficult decisions I've had to make as captain" - the Surrey player averaging 37 with the bat and 24 with the ball so far in his three Tests.

"I just sat down and told him; the difficult part is that everyone is performing so well. I think some people would see it as the easy option to leave Sam out but he's offered so much to this bowling group.

"At the start of the series I said to the team that for us to win a five-match series against the best side in the world, it's going to take more than 11 players. It's about us as a squad performing collectively for five games.

"He [Curran] has played a massive part in the first two and it might be that he comes back in later on. He's unfortunate to miss out but what he's done so far has been nothing short of high-class."

Root insisted that he has no doubts that Stokes is mentally prepared to return to the Test arena after speaking to the all-rounder individually.

"He's just desperate to get back playing cricket - it's obviously his main focus moving forward," said Root. "I sat him down yesterday - just me and him - and asked him where he was at.

"He told me that he's desperate to get out there; he wants to put in performances and concentrate on his cricket now. He felt like he was ready to play; we obviously assessed his fitness over the course of the two days and made that call."

India will be led by Virat Kohli after the captain eased injury concerns by saying his back feels "absolutely fine".

Kohli was forced off the field at Lord's due to the problem but took a full part in training on Thursday, stressing that back pain is something he has successfully managed since it first became an issue in 2011.

Asked if some of his players' careers are at stake after the poor start to the series, Kohli said: "No - I think it's noise on the outside. For us the priority is just to win games of cricket. When it's your time it's your time!

"When your back is against the wall it's actually a good situation to be in. You literally have no room for thinking about anything else apart from what the team requires.

"All we've spoken about is to focus on what the team requires. It could be a good situation to be in because you've literally got no option but to win this game."

The tourists have yet to decide whether to bolster their batting by calling up Rishabh Pant in place of fellow wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik. Seamer Jasprit Bumrah could win a recall after missing the first two Tests with a hand injury, displacing spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

England: Cook, Jennings, Root (capt), Pope, Bairstow (wkt), Stokes, Buttler, Woakes, Rashid, Broad, Anderson.

India (possible): Rahul, Vijay, Pujara, Kohli (capt), Rahane, Pant (wkt), Pandya, Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Shami, Sharma.

Weather looks promising for next 5 days - at least BBC weather Nottingham suggests no rain till Thursday.

Added to that, ENG has dropped Curren for Adil, which suggests it's going to be a better batting surface/condition for Indians. Ball always swings at Trentbridge, but if there is not enough grass, often it becomes a slow seemer (which I think is the case, otherwise no point playing Adil).

I think, both teams would love to bat first and get better use of the batting wicket, which I think is going to get better on 2nd & 3rd day, but it'll be difficult on Day 5 - best bet is to bat first and post 450+.

This Test probably has the best chance for a Draw in this series, if all 5 Tests don't end in direct W/L result.

If it is a flat wicket, then both Ashwin & Jadeja should play. But still there should be third seamer (which means Pandya should be dropped) But the bigger problem is batting! If the pitch is flat, then Rahul, Vijay & Rahane should get another chance to get back to form. But Vijay is so low on confidence, so maybe they can look at Dhawan (India should definitely look for other proper opener/openers in future) Also Pujara should find a way to score runs at least on flat pitches, this is leading to his self destruction! Batting is the main worry for India!

The batting line up of India looks so thin when you have a wk debutants coming at 6. Basically, been said many times but the lineup has nothing baring Kohli. But then a lil bit of luck, a couple of edgy boundaries and who knows Dhawan mite score a century today.

The way the ball is coming of the pitch, you can tell this pitch is slow. There will be movement for the first hour, whilst the ball is new, after that, will be flat. Therefore, India should score big - if they dont score here, they wont score anywhere.

But, will be the same case when England bat. England will score big too. Will be a repeat of the last game here between England and India.

This is where they should have played Kuldeep or Jadeja. But their thinking is so muddled after the losses. 3 and a half seamers (Pandya being the half) on a slow flat one is a mistake.

On another note, good opportunity for Pant to make his debut. Should be an easy ride in. Vijay and Karthik must be feeling sorry for themselves. Get screwed on difficult wickets, and dropped for the flat one.

Also, England should have been brave and dropped Broad and kept Curran in. Can understand the need to bring Stokes back, but Curran has been one of their best players in the series. Chipped in with both runs and wickets.

    Harbhajan Singh's commentary is terrible...

He does not offer any opinion until prodded by his co-commentators, and even then he just says the obvious or repeats cliches.

I can understand if he struggles to articulate his opinion into English, it is not his first language, but at least try to offer some insight. This game has been your career for 15 years. You have to have developed some understanding of the game to offer us mere fans.

My heartbeat raises when Rahul starts to play shots! Probably Pujara's soul should get inside him from time to time, because if he stays as long as Pujara in the crease then the scoring will be automatically done at better strike rate!

Woakes the destroyer. That was poor from Pujara. Like Sarfraz at Lord's.

Coach sahib's face is a picture at that dismissal, doubt this was what the doctor ordered.

Definitely major overhaul is needed for Indian test batting lineup! This will also struggle in India in coming days! You can't have so many bad days & bad lucks & bad pitches!

Matter of time before experts start blaming Kohli for Pujara's dismissal because he was batting too fast. He got run out twice in the same match and the blame was on Kohli that he had said to his players to show intent.

The test series against Australia at home should have been the indication! Now I guess Rahul should never have got picked for LOI or IPL!

Surprised that Rohit Sharma was being forced into Indian test team when things were going well at home now when he has scored the most runs in ODIs’ and T20 legs of the tour, he is nowhere to be seen.

Ball started to swing a long way and India lose 3 quick wickets.

Dhawan played well. Much better than Vijay.
Rahul is a baccha. But was okay.
Pujara again throws his wicket away.

Still better than what they have been doing this tour.

If India can manage 250, they can have a chance.

Really hope you dont get disappointed as I havent heard that he is plays the swinging ball well also he hasnt been developed at international level. His natural game is attacking so he get under pressure to play the situation if wicket falls anytime soon.

His only advantage is that England doesnt know a lot abt him

India's about 20-30 runs ahead of where most predicted their score to be at this stage. Once again, Kohli's going to be the deciding factor. Get him quick, and the game's yours.

Yea, Unfortunately for him, the ball is swinging a mile, alien conditions , he might be hella nervous too, but hoping against hope that he does enough to shut out the 8 ball wonder.

Ian Chappel said, if you put someone in, to gain an advantage you must take 4 wickets by lunch on day 1; here Pujara probably has balanced the session or considering inexperience in Indian lower half, England ahead marginally.

I saw an stats that sides opting to field failed to win that Test around 70% times, when they have taken 3 or less wickets in 1st session - not necessarily all of that 70% ended in loss, but Chappeli’s comment make sense from stats.

Massive post lunch session comming - if IND goes to tea 6 down, almost game over. Horrible shot by Pujara, worse than Sarfraz.
