Guessing game for Punjab cabinet continues

LAHORE: Unlike the federal government, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf did not announce the Punjab cabinet following oath of the chief minister – as the potential candidates anxiously kept waiting for an announcement.

Sources in the PTI said the potential candidates were expecting that soon after chief minister’s oath, the cabinet would be announced. However, as the time passed, the candidates started losing hope and said “The cabinet might be announced after Eidul Azha holidays.”

Mostly the candidates, who were aspiring to be chief minister, topped the list of contenders for important departments. Abdul Aleem Khan, Raja Basharat, Mian Aslam Iqbal, Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed, Dr Yasmin Rashid, Hasnain Dareshak, Sibtain Khan and a few other MPAs are hopeful of getting portfolios in Punjab.

“The delay in the announcement of Punjab cabinet members will again keep aspirants on their toes as was the case in announcement of chief minister candidate,” a contender said.

Others also expressed their fear that the cabinet members might be given portfolios that did not match their expertise as was the case at federal level,” another aspirant said.

Freight business is usually profit making while passenger trains are running on subsidies.

The NLC still exists, it is not a inconsequential "contract from the 70s".

CM to meet legislators to work on change agenda

LAHORE: Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar has plans afoot to personally meet elected legislators and bring about “change” in the province in true sense as he was instructed by Prime Minister Imran Khan at a meeting in Islamabad on Tuesday.

While Mr Buzdar will be celebrating Eidul Azha in Lahore, he has communicated that he would begin personal meetings with legislators from D.G. Khan and his hometown Taunsa Sharif to have suggestions and employ collective wisdom to begin development work in the backward areas in southern Punjab. Afterwards, the chief minister would also be visiting every district to review the performance of public sector departments at the grassroots.

Explaining prime minister’s vision, Mr Buzdar told senior civil bureaucracy to be on their toes to activate state institutions and ensure law and order in a sustained manner to protect lives and properties of people. “Though the threat level has come down, the law-enforcement agencies should stay vigilant,” he added.

As the meeting discussed issues related to hides collection during Eid days, the chief minister asserted that only registered organisations should collect hides and no banned organisation be allowed to do so.

Mr Buzdar expressed his commitment that the archaic police system would be reformed according to the vision of the prime minister.

Promising that rule of law would be implemented in its true sense, the chief minister even went on to say that he would like to stop on traffic signals on roads. However, as the senior bureaucracy explained that it would not be possible in the wake of security threats, he directed that he would only allow essential security for himself. He also directed stopping the scourge of one-wheeling with an iron hand.

Reiterating that the PTI would strictly be focusing on austerity measures by cutting down the government expenditure, he assured that people would soon notice the pleasant change in government’s mindset towards people of this province.

Mr Buzdar directed that the local governments should be activated at grassroots level besides solid waste management companies to ensure complete cleanliness by disposing of the waste of sacrificial animals during Eid.

“Best cleanliness arrangements should be made across the province,” he said and made it clear that strict action would be taken, if people would face any difficulty due to presence of animals’ remains around.

I am honestly surprised, I think he can play the same role as Junejo did in 1985. Junejo also came out of nowhere to become the prime minister but I think he brought respect back to civilian government and all governance indicators in his time shot up. Good Luck buzdar sb.

Lets see, atm i am a litlle worried because although Showbiz is a bigger than thief than his locked up brother, he was good at PR gimmicks and visible projects. The PTI CM must ensure that education and health take priority and sufficient progress is made so that the public can see with their own eyes.

LWMC disposes of ‘44,000 tonnes’ of animal waste

LAHORE: In association with its international Turkish contractors, the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) disposed of 44,000 tonnes of animal waste during the Eid holidays.

The disposal operation was carried out by over 15,000 sanitary workers through 2,000 vehicles, equipments under command of the LWMC and its Turkish companies and supervisory assistance of the city district administration.

“A comprehensive policy was devised to effectively collect and dispose of 44,000 tonnes of animal waste through distribution of 2.1 million waste bags among masses at Eid camps, model points, shops, mosques etc. The strategy also focused on swift and timely lifting of animal waste from streets engaging additional vans; 297 Eid camps were established in all union councils that helped to work in a better and well-coordinated way,” claimed a spokesman for the LWMC in a press release on Friday.

Animal waste was dumped at designated points and covered with soil and lime. Special arrangements were made at major slaughterhouses by deploying workers and machinery there, including mechanical washing.

During their visits, senior LWMC officials, Lahore deputy commissioner, commissioner and others listened to public complaints related to non-collection of offal and the cleanliness situation in the areas of Mughalpura, Salamatpura, Taj Bagh, Johar Town, Iqbal Town, Kot Lakhpat, Shahdara, Singhpura and China Scheme.

“On public complaints, the LWMC management suspended four officials over poor performance in their respective areas,” the spokesman added.

The offal collection and disposal operation was also participated by film and TV star Afzal Khan (Jan Rambo) on all three days of Eid. He visited multiple LWMC camps and distributed waste bags among the public. “I am thankful to the government for inviting me. I am always on toes to help LWMC in this noble cause, which is the responsibility of every citizen of Lahore, Pakistan,” the spokesman quoted Khan as having said during the visits.

Khan’s wife, film star Sahiba, also recorded a video message, which was aired by news channels. She urged the people of Lahore to use waste bags provided by LWMC and avoid littering.

    Bonus for LWMC employees

LAHORE: The Punjab government on Saturday announced a heft bonus equaling to 17-day salary for every Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) employee in recognition of their good performance in collection and disposal of sacrificial animals’ offal and maintaining cleanliness in Lahorel during Eid days.

“The chief minister has appreciated solid waste management arrangements made by the LWMC in the city,” Deputy Commissioner Anwarul Haq told a press conference on Saturday.

“That is why a bonus equaling to 17-days salary for all LWMC employees has been announced as a token of appreciation.”

He said the LWMC suspended from job its three ghost workers who were found working in the house of Union Council (UC) Chairman Jahengir Durani during office hours.

According to a spokesman for the LWMC, there would be zero tolerance on corruption or any misappropriation. “The chairman of UC-142 retaliated over LWMC action by stopping the workers from work in his area. He took out the keys of the machinery working in the area. He threatened the LWMC staff and called reporters for propaganda against the LWMC,” he explained.

After news went on air, UC counselors met the LWMC chairman and informed him the UC chairman was involved in other misappropriations, the spokesman claimed.

DETAINED: The city administration got 88 people detained for burning sacrificial animals’ heads and torts in the provincial capital.

Since burning of the heads and torts at the points other than the designated ones was banned under section 144 of the criminal procedure code during Eid days, the teams constituted by Deputy Commissioner retired Captain Anwarul Haq checked over 1,000 points in City, Model Town, Shalimar, Raiwind and Cantonment tehsils, got registered 65 cases and detained 88 people for flouting the law.

According to a spokesman, teams also sealed eight premises and confiscated 91 gas cylinders being used for burning heads and torts of the sacrificial animals.

“Enforcement staff of Shalimar, Wahga, Ravi, Data Ganj Bakhsh, Samanabad, Nishtar, Gulberg, Aziz Bhatti and Allama Iqbal zones also accompanied the teams headed by the assistant commissioners,” the spokesman added.

Also, the city administration on Saturday decided to hold a three-day round of polio drive in 79 high-risk union councils of Lahore from August 29.

DEMOLITION: A Lahore Development Authority team on Saturday demolished structure of a shop being constructed in front of the camp jail in violation of the rules and regulations, according to a spokesman.

And no minister for agriculture, unless irrigation is covered by it?

PM Imran urges Punjab Cabinet members to eliminate corruption on priority

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday urged members of the Punjab Cabinet to eliminate corrupt practice in the province on priority.

The premier met with the members of the Cabinet at Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Lahore.

Imran felicitated the officials on assuming their portfolios, saying a huge responsibility lies on their shoulder as Punjab is the biggest province in terms of population. He stressed that the performance of the government should be a trendsetter for other provinces.

Discussing various reforms, Imran noted that elimination of corrupt practices is one of the biggest challenges in Punjab. He emphasised austerity and simplicity, saying the Cabinet members should set an example by remaining on the forefront to remove extravagance on taxpayers’ money.

“We must invest on human development while rationalising our expenditures because Pakistan has the lowest Human Development Index in the region,” he said.

The PM expressed serious concern over land grabbing and encroachment in the province in general and Lahore in particular, and directed that mafias and groups who have been involved be taken to task.

He directed the chief minister to immediately launch an anti encroachment drive and take action against land grabbers, and assured his full support for the cause.

Imran urged the provincial cabinet to work tirelessly for implementation of the government’s 100-day agenda to bring a visible change in the socio-economic spheres of the people. He that he would be frequently visiting the province and will remain at the forefront to oversee progress.

The Cabinet members also shared their proposals concerning their departments during the meeting.

Earlier, PM Imran also held a meeting with Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar upon arrival at his secretariat. The CM reaffirmed the commitment to implement the government’s reforms and development agenda.

The premier also planted a sapling upon arrival at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat.
