11-member cabinet proposed by K-P CM

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister Mahmood Khan proposed 11 names for the provincial cabinet and forwarded a list to Prime Minister Imran Khan for approval on Sunday night.

The finalised list hands out two ministries to representatives from Peshawar and Malakand divison and one ministry to those from Mardan, Swabi, Bannu, Hazara division and Nowshera, sources within Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) told The Express Tribune.

“The list has been sent for Imran Khan’s final approval and it will be decided in a day or two,” said Shaukat Yousafzai.

Sources said the provincial cabinet will have limited number of members to avoid unnecessary expenditure.

Former environment and forestry minister Ishtiaq Umer and Taimur Saleem Jhagra have been chosen from Peshawar, former minister housing Dr Amjad Ali from Swat, Shakeel Khan from Malakand. Former education minister Mohammad Atif Khan will be representing Mardan and Shahram Khan has been inducted from Swabi.

Bannu’s Shah Mohammad Khan, who served as former special assistant to the chief minister for transport and mass transit, is included in the list along side former minister for communication and works Akbar Ayub and his brother Arshad Ayub.

From Nowshera, PTI has selected former minister for excise and taxation Mian Jamshed and former advisor to Khattak Mian Khaliqur Rehman. Hisham Inamullah will be representing Lakki Marwat.

According to sources, Shahram is seeking status of a senior minister for local government along with planning and development while Mohammad Atif is inclined towards finance, sports and tourism. Jhagra is expected to lead education ministry.

Sources said since the prime minister could not finalise the names due to oath-taking ceremony and deliberations over federal cabinet. However, the tentative date K-P’s cabinet is said to be August 25.

Atif Khan as senior minister and minister for tourism, Taimoor as finance minister are the 2 that stand out right away.

Wonder if Atif will be directly reporting to IK himself, especially with IK trumpeting the imminent arrival of 4 tourism resorts in KPK.

No education minister? And also no women cabinet members. That's gonna get picked up on by ANP & PPP.

Is the health minister from KPK a doctor or PHD? if doctor then it's wonderful to see both Punjab and KPK health ministers being doctors.

Can K-P’s new textbooks end rote learning?

PESHAWAR: In a bid to help end rote learning and move towards the conceptual understanding of educational content, the provincial government has revised textbooks for grades I through X.

However, teachers have been critical of it, calling for extensive training on the new material
The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Elementary and Secondary Education Department (K-PESED) has brought reforms in the textbooks for the academic year 2018-19. Around 55 million revised textbooks have now been distributed across the province in government-run schools.
PTI govt vows to allocate more resources to education

In the first phase, 15 textbooks from grade-I to V were revised in accordance with the approved standards of textbooks development.

Under the second phase, nine textbooks from grade VI to VIII were revised. The third phase 10 textbooks from grade IX to X were revised and distributed amongst schools in all districts.

The department stated that revised textbooks will help promote conceptual development and in the development of essential analytical critical thinking skills amongst the students.

A senior official in the K-PESED, who did not wish to be named, shared that changes in the textbooks were introduced to eliminate an over-emphasis on rote learning.

The reforms have affected textbooks for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in an interdisciplinary and applied approach for all classes. He further elaborated that the textbooks have adopted the latest teaching and learning techniques with a focus on activities and problem-solving.

    Teachers unimpressed

The changes, though, have left the teaching community — who have to directly work with the textbooks in classrooms — have different views regarding the changes.

Some teachers have lauded these changes, while others have criticised it, noting that the new textbooks will be difficult for both teachers and students.

Fazal Rabi, a senior high school teacher in Mardan, told The Express Tribune that these changes can be easily managed by the newly-recruited teachers since they were more qualified as compared to the older cadre while they also understood modern tools and the new techniques included in the books, hinting that the revisions were indirectly setting out the government’s preference amongst the teaching staff.

He added that some senior teachers are just unaware about modern teaching methods and the needs of students, hence their hesitation.

Rabi urged the K-PESED and the concerned authority to provide training and to build the capacity of the older cadre of teachers.

Muhammad Ilyas Khan, a primary school teacher, also criticised the new additions in the textbooks.

He stated that a teacher for Islamic Studies, Arabic or Pashto cannot manage new courses which were in English. He said that the government must make the subjects and courses easy to comprehend for children instead of making them more complicated for both teachers and students.

Meanwhile, the All Primary Teachers Association Provincial President Azizullah Khan too has decried the recent changes as too difficult.

He said that unless teachers were provided with proper training, the new material was nearly impossible to instruct. Azizullah added that no major changes were made in the books save the addition of a few topics.

He urged the concerned department to provide them with extensive training of 15 days to a month so that the teachers can learn the new changes and how to instruct students accordingly.

KP to serve as base camp for making Pakistan tourism hub

Famous for lush green valleys, waterfalls and mountaineering tourism, KP is all set to make a leading role in materializing the vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan to make the country a hub of tourism.

Tourism, which was the most neglected sector prior to 2013, had witnessed massive turnaround during last government of PTI in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where the record number of projects and schemes were completed besides significant increase in development budget of tourism sector has been witnessed.

“Before PTI Govt in KP, tourism was kept on 30th position in priority list in public sectors departments and corporations in term of funding and now it has attained 8th position, thus showing PTI’s priority for this key sector,” said Sajjad Hameed, General Manager, Tourism Corporation KP (TCKP) while talking to APP.

The KP’s annual development programme (ADP) for tourism, which was only Rs311.204 million in 2013-14, had jumped to record Rs811.772 million in 2017-18 and resultantly scores of mega projects were completed during the tenure of PTI Government, giving an enormous boost to tourism in KP.

The previous PTI Govt had laid a strong foundation to make KP a hub of tourism as per the vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan and TCKP would follow policies of newly elected PTI Government in letter and spirit, he maintained.

Chairlift at Malam Jabba, which was totally destroyed during militancy in 2008-09 was reconstructed and opened for tourists. ‘The newly reconstructed chairlift has been imported and is safe in all aspect,’ he told APP.

As per the agreement, he said, KP Govt would earn Rs12million revenue annually with the 10pc increase each year from Malam Jabba chairlift. “Construction work on four-star hotel adjacent to the chairlift has entered in the final stage and would be opened for tourists in the upcoming summer season with all modern facilities,’ he said.

Under Beautification Projects at Kalam, Naran and Galayat, a flagship project of PTI Government, conditions of access roads in these scenic tows were improved besides establishment of children playing areas, tuck shops and other facilities to promote tourism.

The GM TCKP said five Camping Pods, an eco-tourism friendly project of PTI Government, were also established at Thandyani in Abbottabad, Shahikh Badeen in DI Khan, Shahran in Manshera, Bishigram in Swat and Yakhtangi in Shangla that would help expand tourism and reduce load on established tourists resorts in the province.

A total of 29 rest houses of different departments had been notified for handing over to TCKP against which 19 were transferred to TCKP, he said, adding his department improved conditions of these rest houses and made 12 of those fully operational before handing over it to Galyat Development Authority (GDA). “Rs15million revenue was collected from these rest houses during 2014-16 when these were under the custody of TCKP,” he mentioned.

To create awareness about our rich cultural heritage, architecture and civilization, the GM said TCKP has planned and participated in a number of important tourism events during last five years including youth visits to Jahanabad Buddha, Saiful Mulok, trekking and camping from Thandyani to NathiaGali, Jishan e Chitral sports festival, special training excursion from Peshawar to Attock Khurd, vintage car rally from Karachi to Peshawar, Indus river water crossing jeep rally near Swabi, fire engine centenary Gor Khatree, Khanpur lake festival, restoration of Malam Jabba resort, international tourism expo, Kalash festival, Lahore international expo, Broghil festival near Pak-Afghan border, motorbike rally Supat, Kumrat sports festival.

TCKP has also organized and participated in events like jewels of KP, international tourism exhibition, investment roadshow in Dubai, tour de Galiyat cycle race from Islamabad to Nathia Gali, Train Safari, Huner-e-Hawa & Huner Mela, Peshawar colours, train safari for transgenders besides launching of the first ever tourism policy on March 16, 2016 of KP.

Hayat Ali Shah, Senior General Manager TCKP told APP that with the assistance of UNDP Camping Pods in all tourism potential areas would be established with an estimated cost of Rs250 million and so far about Rs50 million were already spent on this mega project that would attract a large number of foreign and domestic tourists.

Under public-private partnership (PPP), he said 400 Kanal land was acquired in Swabi district for water sports, tourism and recreational facilities, adding a modern chairlift would be set up in Narran at Manshera for which 63 kanal land has already been acquired with the assistance of private sector.

A network of tourists information centres was set up near Peshawar Museum, Jalalabad Abbottabad, Chitral and Landaki in Swat besides tourists friendly police was raised in Swat and Abbottabad to guide and facilitate tourists in these scenic regions.

In addition to holding of Shandor and Kalash festivals, he said, excess and links roads in all major hilly districts including Chitral, Swat and Manshera would be improved to give an easy excess to tourists.

“The rest houses, private tour operators, hotels, motels and guest houses had received record booking orders from foreign and domestic tourists this year compare to last year, showing unshakable trust of tourists and people in the policies of PTI Government,” he said.

The senior GM TCKP said the recently merged tribal districts are ideal for tourism as these areas have enough natural tourist’s resorts that needed to be tapped.

Hayat said TCKP is ready to establish camping pods in Govt. rest houses in North Waziristan, South Waziristan, Kurram Agency, Bajaur and Mohmand districts on priorities basis for facilitation of tourists.

And where will the money come from?

I know you have qualified it with the word "slowly"... but It's not good to raise expectations, pakistan needs to invest drastically in native industry and education and increase productivity and taxes.

All of which Imran Khan mentioned in his speech and is legislating towards.

Think he also mentioned in his speech he didn't expect to be alive when it all eventually came through, so Fahdi wasn't too far from the truth when he said slowly

From where it does in the rest of the world. Through taxation. You increase the tax base, grow the industry, increase trade all of which brings in revenue in the form of taxes. Fix government institutions like the railway and PIA which should be providing revenue instead of giving losses.

I know it's not going to happen in the next 8-9 years, probably not even 14-15 years, but that is why I mentioned slowly. Also I mentioned "move towards" to point out that we should look to the model of Scandinavian countries or other European countries like Germany instead of a state like the USA. Imran has already hinted towards this in his speeches when he says he wants a welfare state.

Peshawar BRT to offer bicycle-sharing system along with bus rides

PESHAWAR: Once complete, commuters hopping on to the mass transit bus project in the provincial capital will also be able to enjoy cycle rides in a dedicated cycle lane using the same payment card as the bus service. Commuters, though, will have to learn how to ride a bike on their own.

TransPeshawar, the urban mobility company owned by the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government and is responsible for operating and maintaining the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, plans to purchase around 360 bicycles in a bike-sharing feature which will be introduced along with the project.

This was announced in an official statement released by the company on Wednesday.
In this regard, a separate bike-lane is being built along the entire 28-kilometre-long corridor for the BRT.

To rent-out and the bicycles, travellers can use their “Zu Fare Card,” which they can procure from TransPeshawar. The card can also be used to travel on BRT buses.

With a one-size-fits-all design, the bicycles will be using a step-through frame, so that it is gender neutral with both men and women using these without any hindrance. A step-through frame bicycle is more appropriate as per the cultural needs of women in Peshawar, for easy riding.

The 360 bicycles will all have easily adjustable seat posts which can be adjusted to different heights for individual riders.

To ensure the safety of riders during poor lighting conditions, the bicycles will be equipped with an automatic light emitting diode (LED) light and reflectors. To further enhance the safety of riders, the bicycles will be chainless and use safe pedals.

The company will also have a rewards system built on the service’s website, and mobile application to encourage good behaviour. Customers who take bicycles from relatively full stations or return bicycles to relatively empty stations will be rewarded.

To discourage theft of the bikes, they will be manufactured using unique parts and components.

Three trucks will also be deployed throughout the system to redistribute cycles where demand is high. The bicycle sharing system will have bicycle stands at each station and at popular locations along the corridor to facilitate passengers.

Once customers are registered in the system, they can utilize the fare card, customer website or system app to access their credentials, which will be interlinked.

The bicycle terminal will also have a facility for customers to view the status of their card. Additionally, passengers can also rent the bicycle through the accompanying mobile application.

This follows the introduction of bicycle renting systems on university campuses where students can rent bicycles through a mobile application and can just leave them when done and the company can track them with built-in positioning systems.

This is how a developed country builds mass transit system by the sound of it. In fact, many developed urban areas do not have bikes lanes. Amazing if KPK delivers the promise while still keeping the health and education as a top priority - A slap on Noora Culture.

Police should be under control of civil administration. Now they are running free calling themselves independent. Police is not some army working for national security that it should be independent. Mayors and district admin should keep a check on them.

I am not aware if hamza shahbaz was running punjab police however even in Punjab elected and appointed district officials have minimal say in the police. They can't even do much in the face of complaints from public about police brutality and inefficiency because of this obsession with independent police.

A police controlled by the mafia is bad and a totally independent Police answerable to no one is just as bad. Need to find a mediun where accountability and operational independence are guaranteed.

That's what I am saying, we should not fall for the independent police mantra and mould the laws as per the need of our society.

To all Janoonis worshippers of Ameer ul Momineen Imran Khan Niazi and to the Zaid Hamid ISI 5th generation War employees I have a question. Please Answer

Do you know BRT project of Pervez Khattak Lead gov ?

ISI’s stooge promised to make Peshawar Metro cheaper than Lahore and Rawalpindi Metro,

Where does BRT stand after 4 years ?

Estimated cost has shot up to how many billion rupees ?

Who is responsible for these fake promises ?

Who is responsible for loss of Billions of Rupees to national exchequer ?

Why Imran Khan’s brainchild “ Ehtesaab Commision “ is being closed after 4 years ?

Why KPK Ehtesaab Commision cannot probe BRT project ?

Why Imran Khan Niazi is sending all KPK Accountability cases to judicial arm of ISI ie NAB ? To Musharaff dictators setup NAB which indulged in Political victimisation ? The Dry Cleaning laundery which gifted PTI electable by blackmailing ?

Why ? To get clean chit ?

Will Pervez Khattak, KPK cabinet and IMRAN Khan Niazi deposit 60 Billion Rupees of tax paid money in national exchequer ? Will they be jailed ?

Two wrongs don’t make one right. Suppose that Imran Khan is guilty on all the above mentioned accounts, how does that exonerate the Sharif’s from their years and years of abuse of law. For years they were the pets of ISI and establishment. They were actively involved in sabotaging BB’s governments. They took money from the establishment and used it against their political opponents. They attacked higher courts, conspired against sitting PMs and whatnot. As far as I’m concerned, they had it coming. It’s the law of nature. If IK is repeating the same mistakes, he’ll get the same results. What goes around, comes around.

Saw this a few months ago, it's perfect for a place like Karachi, which needs to be cleaned, needs water, jobs, and electricity. Really needs to be looked into, and I think the PTI government are looking into this, saw Arif Alvi tweet about it a few months back.
