Pakistan Super League 2020 - Discussion Thread

    As per reports:

Earlier this year it was reported that the initial five franchises have suffered a loss of ranging from PKR 200 million to 700 million in just two seasons. After suffering huge losses, the national board met with representatives from all of the six teams (including Multan Sultans). Eventually, PCB has reduced the salary cap from USD 1.38 million to USD 1.1 million.

They also have given confirmation to the franchises that they will be exempted from paying bank guarantee which will value around USD 14.51 million before the start of the next season.

When anyone compares PSL with other T20 leagues, like IPL who pay around USD 11.8 million on players, CPL – USD 0.764 million, Global T20 Canada – USD 0.65 million, and according to the reports players featuring Pakistan Super League play on lower wages in different leagues. To cut the salary cap of the players, it is expected that the size of the squad can also be reduced from 21 to 18 so that it will not impact the wages of players individually.

The other reason behind the clash among the franchises and the board is because of the falling value of Pakistan rupee against the US dollar and board has come to a conclusion of setting the conversion rate to PKR 138.50. When the franchises signed their agreement during the inaugural season of PSL in 2016, the value the currency of Pakistan was 104 PKR in against the dollar and now that value has slumped to 154.

While its understandable to reduce the cap, but exemption of Bank guarantee is dangerous.

PSL local players category renewed for 2020 season

HBL PSL local players category renewed for 2020 season

    • Two-step category renewal process involving representatives of all six franchises completed

    • Pakistan T20I captain Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Imad Wasim join 14 other local stars in Platinum category

    • Imam-ul-Haq, Haris Sohail and Asif Ali feature in Diamond category list

    • “Our preparations are in full swing, the HBL PSL 2020 edition will be held in Pakistan, we are focused on delivering another world-class edition of the prestigious league, says PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan

    Karachi, 25 October 2019

HBL Pakistan Super League will once again feature the best of Pakistan cricket talent as the new categories of local players who took part in the HBL PSL 2019 season have been finalised.
Pakistan T20I captain Babar Azam heads the Platinum category; teammates Shaheen Shah Afridi, Imad Wasim, Hasan Ali (leading wicket-taker in HBL PSL 2019) and Shadab Khan have graduated to the Platinum category for the HBL PSL 2020 season.

The completion of the renewal process has also kick-started the player recruitment process for the upcoming season (HBL PSL 2020).

As part of the category renewal process, one representative from each of the six franchises voted for local player categories. Franchise representatives were not allowed to vote for their own players. Teams had a right to submit review requests at the end of this process.

Head of Player Acquisition and Management Imran Ahmed Khan and National Selection Coordinator Nadeem Khan then reviewed the final list based on this process.

PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan said: “With the completion of the category renewal process for the upcoming season of the HBL Pakistan Super League we have reached an important milestone. These are exciting times as we move closer and closer towards the 2020 season which will be a truly historic one as all 34 matches will be played in Pakistan.

“HBL PSL has become one of the most sought after T20 leagues in the world, the next edition will be even bigger and better, I am sure league fans both in Pakistan and around the world will enjoy top-class cricket, with world-class facilities at the stadiums and top-quality broadcast once the tournament begins in February 2020.”

Meanwhile, various factors such as HBL PSL performances, national team performances, domestic performances and perceived T20 brand value were considered at length as part of the two-step player category renewal process.

All those who have donned the Pakistan colours were assigned a base category of Gold. According to this year’s draft rules, each team is allowed to retain up to eight players from last year’s roster.

Players who are U23 but have been called up to the Pakistan squad before the category finalization process cannot be a part of the Emerging category. Additionally, U23 players cannot be part of a squad as an Emerging player for more than two years unless they have played three or less matches in these two years.

Teams reserve the right to float relegation requests for the players before finalizing retentions. After relegation request is floated, all other teams shall be given a chance to meet the player’s base category. If no team matches the player’s base category, the player will be relegated to a category below his base category.

Relegation requests may only be floated after obtaining consent from the player. The list of all local players who were not part of the HBL PSL 2019 shall be released separately.

Exactly. I don't get why Haider Ali is being ignored in t20 cricket. He is tailor made for the format. He made a century at 100+ strike rate in FC cricket and always plays at a high strike rate in U19 cricket.

Don't think this is a complete list.

Bro can you do us all a favour?

Can you clarify with whoever would have the answer whether players not on this list are allowed to be drafted.

Also will those players (if allowed to be drafted) ex. Rohail nazir muktar Ahmed etc. Be automatically in the lowest category?

Final question.... if you're allowed to draft a max of 5 players from q category but you only draft 4, can you draft 1 extra from a category below that category?

    Thanks

This list of players is just for the player retention process, since these players were part of PSL teams in the previous season. Each team can retain up to 8 players from their previous squad (ahead of the draft). Their remaining squad will be completed at the draft.

The full list of players will be published later and of course, the additional players who aren't in this list can be picked at the draft.

I'm not too sure about the final question, but in most cases teams use their quota of picks. For example, 3 platinum, 3 diamond, 3 gold - these spots are usually filled up by every franchise. But squads this season are rumoured to be smaller so I guess we'll find out regarding the categories and number of players soon enough.

They weren't a part of PSL squads last seasons so they obviously won't be in these lists.

They probably will be in the complete draft list which will be released later.

It will obviously take a little longer this time considering that PSL will be held completely in Pakistan.

    Specifically the foreign players.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has come up with yet another innovation as they have decided to introduce traditional street cricket style in the upcoming edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

The first pick in the draft for PSL season five will be decided on ‘Pugam’ [Show of Hands]. The draft for season five will be held in mid-November. The exact date will be disclosed soon.

All franchises’ representatives will be gathered either at Minar-e-Pakistan or Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore to do ‘Pugam’.

The cricket board aims to attract cricket fans in the country towards the game by implementing different interesting ideas. Earlier, they introduced no toss rule in domestic cricket to reduce the extra advantage for the home side.

In 2018, the Cricket Australia (CA) introduced bat flip in place of toss in their popular franchise event, Big Bash League (BBL). Their this innovation attracted the entire cricket world.

It must be noted here that the fifth edition of the PSL will be from 20 February to 22 March 2022. The whole edition will be played in Pakistan.

HBL Pakistan Super League Player Draft first round pick order for the 2020 season will be determined at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore on Sunday.

Representatives of the six HBL PSL franchises and PCB senior management will gather at the headquarters of Pakistan cricket to determine the pick order of the first round of the HBL PSL 2020 Player Draft.

The event will include a panel discussion and the draw. The first picks will be revealed through the depiction of an age-old street cricket tradition involving the cricket bat at the Gaddafi Stadium outfield.

The cricket bat pick order method is often used for determining the batting turns in single-wicket cricket across Pakistan. It also works as an alternate to the coin-toss to start a match. The cricket bat pick order method has become an integral part of Pakistan cricket folklore and is commonly used across the country in hundreds and thousands of tennis and tape-ball cricket matches each day of the week.

Once the pick order for the first round is determined, a specially-designed statistical model will be used to decide the pick order for the remaining 17 rounds of the Draft. This order will be generated and released on Monday, 4 November.

This year’s HBL PSL Player Draft pick order will be randomised in line with a 2018 PSL Governing Council decision of applying this rule from the 2020 season onwards.

Once the full pick order is released, the transfer and retention window for HBL PSL 2020 will officially open. As part of this year’s Draft policy, each team can retain up to eight players before the Draft.

The HBL PSL 2020 will be staged in Pakistan with action set to start in February 2020.

are none of the other players from national t20 cup 1st xi or the national t20 cup 2nd xi sides allowed to play in PSL?

or are they only allowed to be picked as a supplementary category player?

    this is so confusing.

if you are not attacking you are defending. And if you are defending you are losing.

No such thing. They just haven't finalised the lists yet.

Again, the list of players that is in this thread so far is for retention. Teams can retain 0-8 players so the categories of the players have been amended according to their stature. The full list which will obviously include a much larger pool of players will be released later, and at the draft, anyone from THAT list can be picked, not just this one.

Why isnt Zeeshan Malik in emerging category? He would have been only 23 by PSL 2020.

Also how come Ammad Butt is still emerging after playing as emerging player for almost 3 seasons if I am not wrong?

    Good questions.

From PCB release: True to its tradition of promoting young Pakistani talent, HBL PSL rules require teams to have at least two Emerging cricketers in a squad of 16. Players need to be U23 as on 1 January 2020 to qualify for this category.

Zeeshan will be 23 on Dec 26. By U23, I suppose they mean birthday must be post 1 Jan 1997.

I am quite sure Amad Butt doesn't fall in Emerging

Yes it looks like that birthday must be 1 Jan 1997 as Zeeshan was in emerging category till last PSL.

For Amad Butt I think it might be a mistake as he is 24 and has already played more than 2 seasons and has played more than 3 matches as well which is defying every criteria of the emerging category. Hopefully it will be corrected before the draft.

Pakistan Super League 2020 - Team retentions

    Lahore, 30 November 2019:

Left-arm fast bowler Usman Shinwari has become the first player to be transferred for the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 as he moves from Karachi Kings to Lahore Qalandars.

Usman was one of the players who had agreed to drop one category through the relegation request process for the event whose all 34 matches will be played in Pakistan in February/March.

As per the event regulations, when a team sends in a relegation request for their local player to drop down one category, it is shared with the other teams based on the player’s consent. The other five teams can then either match the player’s original category or allow him to relegate on his existing team’s roster.

Based on the teams’ expression of interests, the player’s existing team is then given time to either retain the player in his original category or release him to the team willing to match the player’s registered category.

In this instance, Lahore Qalandars matched Usman Shinwari’s relegation request resulting in his transfer to the Qalandars for HBL PSL 2020.

Five other players who have successfully relegated as a result of this relegation request process are: Imam-ul-Haq (Peshawar Zalmi, diamond to gold), Junaid Khan (Multan Sultans, diamond to gold), Salman Butt (Lahore Qalandars, gold to silver), Shan Masood (Multan Sultans, gold to silver) and Umar Amin (Peshawar Zalmi, gold to silver).

Usman missed the inaugural 2016 event but represented Karachi Kings in the subsequent editions.

The transfer/retention window opened on 4 November and closes on 1 December with each team allowed to retain up to eight players from last season.

How is Usman Shinwari a LQ retention when he wasnt even in LQ? Is it a trade with KK?

Also surprised to see Imad Wasim agreeing a demotion to diamond to keep both Babar and Amir in the team? So Babar might not be captaining with Imad Wasim there as well.

Does cricket survive off of it's money or does it survive for it's money?

Other than Salman Butt I think LQs retentions are fine. MS really surprised by retaining Shan Masood and letting Malik go though.

They still have two of their platinum picks left, so they might atleast turn the poster around.
