Ravindra Jadeja, Siddarth Kaul to replace Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur in India’s squad [Post #265]
India squad for Asia Cup: Rohit Sharma (C), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Ambati Rayudu, Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Y Chahal, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur, Khaleel Ahmed #Cricket

Virat Kohli has been rested for the 2018 Asia Cup, starting on 15 September in the United Arab Emirates, and Rohit Sharma will stand in as captain, the Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed on Saturday, 1 September.
Manish Pandey returned to the side, thanks to his excellent recent form, but the standout name was that of Khaleel Ahmed, the left-arm medium-pacer from Rajasthan, who got his maiden international call-up.
Kedar Jadhav was also included in the 16-man squad, having missed the three-match one-day international series in England, as was Ambati Rayudu.
Suresh Raina missed out, though, along with Umesh Yadav, Siddarth Kaul, and Shreyas Iyer, all of whom were part of the ODI squad in England.
Kohli was rested, possibly with an eye on the Tests against the Windies in October, which start less than a week after the final of the Asia Cup on 28 September. The selectors, however, decided to play others likely to feature in the Tests, including Hardik Pandya, Shikhar Dhawan, Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul.
Pandey’s call-up is no surprise. He has been in a rich vein of form, and was the top run-scorer in the recent quadrangular series between India A, India B, Australia A and South Africa A. His 306 runs in four matches, including a 73* in the final, helped his India B side to the title.
Manish Pandey was rewarded for his excellent form in the quadrangular series Manish Pandey was rewarded for his excellent form in the quadrangular series
Jadhav was also part of the India B side, but his contributions were less spectacular – he totalled 30 runs in four matches, and in his one outing with the ball returned 0/10. However, he proved his fitness in the series, having come back from a hamstring injury that ruled him out of most of the Indian Premier League in April and May, and the tour of England that followed.
Rayudu was another player to make a comeback. He was originally in the squad for the ODIs in England, but was then excluded after failing the Yo-Yo fitness test. However, he cleared the test thereafter, and was part of the India A side in the quadrangular series, scoring 62*, 48, 11 and 66 in his four matches.
Ahmed, 20, has played 17 List A and 12 T20s so far, and was part of the India A side that toured England in June. He was also involved in the quadrangular series, picking up seven wickets in four matches, including a 3/45 against South Africa A.
The Asia Cup is a six-team affair, with India slotted in Group B, along with Pakistan and a qualifier. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are in Group A.
Squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Shikhar Dhawan (vc), KL Rahul, Ambati Rayudu, Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni (wk), Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur, Khaleel AhmedLast edited by MenInG; 1st September 2018 at 16:24.

Dinesh Karthik? It's quite amazing how a guy, with no performance, quietly sneaks into the national team so consistently for last 15 years.
-

As expected, India didn’t go with the full squad and rested the best player in the world.
A moment of silence for some of our Pakistani fans who were adamant that Kohli will play because India cannot afford to send a weakened team to a tournament where they will play Pakistan multiple times.
My apologies, but please feel free to lick your wounds.

Should have rested Pandya and Bumrah also. Asia cup isnt a significant tournament any more.

Not a bad squad. Only Kohli among the important players has been rested. The squad is good for UAE conditions

So we were told that india will rest there main player like bumrah, dhawan etc but only kohli is rested.
2 points to determine
1)Either india is one man army kohli
2)India team can perform witout kohli there batting don.t depend only on him
-

Squad looks pretty average without Kohli. Happy for Khaleel Ahmed we desperately need a left arm fast bowler. Guys like Axar, Rayudu and Jadhav makes me want to punch in the wall.

Was sure that Pandya would be rested. Suprised to see him in the squad. He's had a very heavy workload.
Shocked they picked DK over Pant. A 34 year-old backup for a 37 year-old Dhoni. Brilliant!
Also, I was really hoping they would revisit Jadeja as the 6th bowler and #7 batsman. India needs a 2nd all-rounder in the XI.

Kedhav Jadhav again? Didn't he look like a Joker in CT matches? His 2 or 3 spin overs with comic action is not going to help us win a tournament and the less we talk about his terrible fielding the better it is. I wish and pray he's not included in the Playing 11. This is looking like an extended version of CSK team to me. I would have felt very happy if we had players like Pant and Gill in place of Kedhar and Karthik or Dhoni. But can't stand this guy Kedhar Jadhav.
Karthik is done and dusted too. Why not Pant in his place??? Urgh!
And then comes Axar Patel, when did he last play for India? We added Krunal Pandya for Eng LOI series and he disappears again because of this good-for-nothing Axar Patel.
I thought Indian selectors would take a leaf out of England or Pak's Book and give opporunities to Youngsters, but looks like it's not gonna happen until we terribly fail in this Asia Cup and World Cup 19.
This is the right time to give opportunities to Pants, Gills, Shaws and Sirajs.. But Indian selectors never ceaze to amaze me with their terrible team selections.

Nothing to do with Pakistan. Asia cup just isnt a premier tournament anymore.
Australia tour is far far more important than Asia cup and Bumrah and Pandya should be fit for that.
Bcci has shown what they think by resting their captain their best player the best batsman in the world and arguably one of the greatest batsman in ODIs.Last edited by cricketjoshila; 1st September 2018 at 14:51.

Why? All three have done well given the limited chances they have received.
Jadhav has tailed off a little, so I can still understand your displeasure about his selection.
But Rayadu has a 50+ avg and Axar has the lowest economy rate of all bowlers in the squad. He's a good defensive bowler. But he needs to do a lot more with the bat.

It's a very insignificant tournament anyway , disappointed that so many seniors Indian players are being played.
Should have selected a squad of 11 amateur players and India would still do ok .

This is a very poor move by BCCI. This is a ' neither here, nor there' Indian team. They are still playing Bumrah and Bhuvi, who need rest. In batting, they still have an expired Dhoni in the team. In addition to them, DK, Axar, Rayadu, Jadhav, Shardul are not the players who are going to set the world on fire. These kind of players pull the Indian team 20 yrs back in time.
The BCCI is quietly slipping these players in so that, when they send all these seefarishi players in major tournaments, including WC, people will not raise eyebrows. Corruption to the core. Indian cricket is suffering big time due to bad and corrupted selection.
Whereas, an express quickie like Siraj has not been given chance, even Avesh and Prasidh could have come in to just have a feel of international cricket.
A blunder which will cost India dearly in the long run.

Unlike Sachin who faced whoever got him out cheaply to take revenge.

Kohli and Amir have played 6 matches against each other.
India have won 4, Kohli was man of the match twice in those matches. Furthermore, he scored 81 in 68 balls in one of the matches where he did not win the Man of the Match Award.
No wonder Kohli running away from Amir. Let’s get real - Amir is nothing but a speck of dust in front of Kohli. Even if Kohli retires today and Amir plays for a hundred years, he will not have half the legacy Kohli has.

I see how this thread is going to progress.
"IND/Kohli is so afraid of Amir, he decided to rest!".
"Coward Kohli".
Yep, you can try and make yourself feel good. But the fact is this tournament isn't being given much attention and importance, sadly.
The terrible scheduling and over the top ego to NOT change that horrible scheduling added to it.

So India A will take part in the Asia Cup. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan have no excuse to not make the final outright now. Pakistan should play with the same intensity against India A as they would have with a full strength side.

Time for KL Rahul to cement his place in LOIs (preferably No.3 - as Dhawan & Rohit are fixed and Kohli willing to move down if some younger guy plays well at No.3) He has to make his mind up for two choices (Opening in Test Cricket or No.3/No.4 in LOIs) I don't think he is capable of handling both, that's assured now! He should have took guidance of Gambhir or Sehwag of how to handle opening in both formats & be successful, as switching between formats & batting positions is way too much for him to handle!

Best post in this thread so far. This was a perfect opportunity to test players like Gill, Shaw, Mavi etc but once again we choose players like Axar, Jadhav, Rayudu. We have all seen how they perform when they step outside of subcontinent.
Why waste our time on these players again and again? Pathetic squad. On one hand they have rested Kohli and giving a message that they don't care about Asia Cup and on the other hand bowlers like Bhuvi and Bumrah have been selected.

Sir, on one hand kohli played each and every match in the England series and on the other hand bhuvi nd bumrah barely played any...bhuvi gone missing in the 5 tests and bumrah played just a t20 and 3 tests in the overall uk tour
They can rest a player who played 16-17innings in a month and half but the same cannot rest players who played barely 6-7innings..may be in your parallel world the workload of kohli nd bhuvi/bumrah are same but in reality they are not

May be if you read my post again then you will understand. I clearly said that the selectors look confused by resting Kohli and picking Bhuvi and Bumrah. If they were in a mood to experiment then they could have selected better players than TTFs like Jadhav, Rayudu and Axar. Stop being stubborn for once.
