Brian Lara vs Ricky Ponting - Who was better?

Two of the greatest modern day batsmen of all time across formats. While Lara is generally rated higher in tests, Ponting is in odis.

Who do you rate higher? Discuss!

Lara was obviously the better bat. No question about it.

Ponting was the more effective batsman (consistency of run scoring & consistency of important runs).

I may be in minority but I feel lots of batsmen (SRT, Waugh, Ponting, Dravid, Kallis, Sanga) were more effective than Lara who used to either go BIG or go home (with little in between).

But Lara is Lara. Magical player who in his zone was probably the greatest test batsman the world has ever seen.

Same as you stated , Lara in test and Pointing in odi.
Here point to be noted that Lara was one of the best odi player but somehow he decided to play as a lower order batsmen in later part of his career which hampered his stat.
Lara completed 7000, 8000 runs faster than Sachin. He had a world record for fastest 7000 and 8000 which was broken by Ganguly .

Lara being a man of crisis is a heavily overblown myth imho.

Till 1995/96, Lara was peerless. Ruthless in both tests and ODIs. Thrashed ATG bowlers like crazy in both tests or ODIs. Then he started slipping in ODIs (never recovered) and lost form in Tests before he got back to his old self post 2000.

All things said, I believe SRT was the better batsman compared to Lara.

    For me,

    Peak - Lara
    Overall - SRT

With that being said, let's not bring Tendu here and deviate cos this thread will get easily derailed.

People will always have their preferences reg SRT vs Lara with each side convinced about their choice. Nothing wrong as those 2 were truly magical players.

Lara because of his unbelievable temperament.

His hunger for runs was massive. Plenty of daddy hundreds and that too against McGrath, Warne and Murali.

Ponting didnt faced attacks as strong as Lara did.

Hence, its Lara. But he himself hasn't done that well against genuine pace.

Lara was clearly ahead than ponting. Both were excellent players , played memorable knocks .Lara faced That ATG Australian bowling which ponting didn't,so that might be one reason for the people to rate Lara above ponting. For me , those trade mark ponting's pull and hook shots were treats to watch.

Lara was more brilliant in talent & aesthetics.

Ponting (no slouch in those two either!) was more consistent throughout his career.

Ponting achieved more in the game- was part of stronger team.

Lara had to produce herculean efforts to save or make his team competitive time & again. He could not do this every series but you could visibly see him rise for the big series & the best bowlers. Known for his attacking flair but I saw Lara in epic Test duels that really showcased his defensive abilities too, seeing off vs a top speed Brett Lee, a prime McGrath, Warne & especially Murali and he came out on top far more often than not. he'd survive their best shots & then counterattack- you could see for rare times doubt on these bowlers faces as he did.

If I was choosing one vs the other for an ATG XI I'd go Lara (and that is said even as an Aussie) but not by much.

I would choose Ponting, he seemed to churn out ton after ton at his peak without making much of an effort and his runs always had a big impact on the outcome of the match.

That's a tough call to make. Would Lara's hundreds have made more impact if he had a Warne & McGrath in his sides?

He did have Ambrose and walsh in his first half.
But Australia did have fantastic team taking lot of pressure off Pointing with great opners, Martyn , Hussey, Clarke and Waugh as middle order and best keeper batsman and I am not talking about bowlers. So his runs will end up as winning runs.

Lara was a magical batsman at his best, but I would probably have Ponting in my team.

Lara was too inconsistent. If you have lara as your opponent, you can still smell victory.

    If ponting, no way.

Perhaps, it is difficult to say. Only 4 out of 41 Ponting centuries came in Tests that Australia lost, so, over 90% of the time when he scored, Australia were not beaten. There is just as likely to be a link there as well.

I would add that while there is definitely something to be said for being a ďpressure playerĒ when you are (a) against the scoreboard, (b) the conditions and quality of bowling are against you and (c) you are the only decent batsman in your team [Lara] there is actually a very underrrated and overlooked kind of pressure as well: when you are rated as the best team and you are captaining that team - when you have got to the top of your profession but now you are doing something even harder, staying at the top of it (how often do number one ranked teams / individuals in all sports so quickly slide right back down the ladder); when you are expected to succeed in every innings and win every match - that is some serious pressure as well, and many a batsmanís performance has capitulated under it.

I would add that while there is definitely something to be said for being a “pressure player” when you are (a) against the scoreboard, (b) the conditions and quality of bowling are against you and (c) you are the only decent batsman in your team [Lara] there is actually a very underrrated and overlooked kind of pressure as well: when you are rated as the best team and you are captaining that team - when you have got to the top of your profession but now you are doing something even harder, staying at the top of it (how often do number one ranked teams / individuals in all sports so quickly slide right back down the ladder); when you are expected to succeed in every innings and win every match - that is some serious pressure as well, and many a batsman’s performance has capitulated under it.

    The second type.

People are quite forgiving in life - mistakes are discouraged, but they are also generally permitted, supported, forgotten, and viewed on a learning curve, until the dreaded moment arrives: when you make so few mistakes that your peers can see that you have become the best at what you do.

Then, people start to expect you to be the best. If you do not remain the best, then it is no longer good enough. That is the only time when mistakes become impossible to fathom, unthinkable whilst they unfold, and unforgivable when they have happened.

Imagine being the one man at the centre of all of this, carrying it all on your shoulders, and always one bad month away from the loss of your reputation. Thatís pressure!

But Australia did have fantastic team taking lot of pressure off Pointing with great opners, Martyn , Hussey, Clarke and Waugh as middle order and best keeper batsman and I am not talking about bowlers. So his runs will end up as winning runs.
He did, and the stats show he shot off to a very bright start & big lead over the other two after 10, 30, 50 tests, before his team started to really crumble.

Yes your assessment of Ponting & his team is clear- he had the benefit of coming in behind an ATG opening PAIR (not just single good opener) so had about as optimum opportunity as you could ask for a #3.

Reminds of the half dozen at least times Warne was told in Oz media he was washed up, couldn't spin it anymore, had been figured out, was too injured to be his old self again. Remarkable to keep shrugging that off when his form did indeed seem in a terminal dip. He had several phases in his career marked by huge comebacks.

    .

Lara also had one of the most stressful, annoying, frustrating jobs in the history of cricket. Once Ritchie Richardson left, that West Indies team was in a constant state of flux and squabbling, and all the batsmen sucked. Jimmy Adams sucked after his head injury, Chanderpaul only figured out how to make tons in the late 2000s, Sarwan bloomed late, Gayle bloomed after Lara left, Hooper sucked and the team spent the entire 1990s with no stable openers. The team was basically Lara, Walsh, Ambrose and lots of stress.

Lara because he was averaging close to 60 when the big guns of the nineties were firing, while Ponting was on about 45.

Once he got going, Lara was unstoppable, jaw-dropping, you would just watch in amazement. Never felt that with Ponting. After Richards, Lara was best I ever saw. Maybe as good as Richards.

While Ponting averaged 45, Lara didn't average 60.

Here is the end of 90s when Ponting average was 45,

I was also under the assumption that Ponting was more consistent but then I did a detailed analysis once in another thread and discovered that they were about the same. Lara was equally consistent despite playing in a far weaker team.

Lara was clearly the superior batsman in all formats. He was also a GOAT batsman against spin.

Both Lara and Sachin would have averaged higher IMO if they had the support that Ponting got throughout the career.

Itís easy to come and bat when you are at 150-2 instead of having to come at 18-3 facing Mcgrath and Gillespie

Of course it ainít pontingís fault that he was born Aussie

    Brian Lara vs Ricky Ponting

Both Brian Lara and Ricky Ponting were #3 batsmen. Both have almost similar records and both were legends. But, who was better?

I personally feel that Lara was slightly better than Ponting. Ponting had the luxury to play in an all-star team which Lara didn't have.

    Discuss.

We can cut Lara some slack there, India didn't have any world class bowlers for most of Lara's career. So him not performing in India isn't a big deal.

Lara, for the simple fact that he carried a weak batting line-up and could play spin 10x better.

Lara against spin was far superior , I think Lara is better than Pointing.

Lara was def more entertaining but he bottled it against AD in 97/98 and again against McGrath in the early 2000ís. Ponting was less entertaining and not as good player of spin and struggled badly in Ind at times.

Lara was far more clutch than Ponting though. It's not Ponting's fault, but he rarely had to play a match winning/saving knock all by himself. Before Chanderpaul arrived, Lara was the only WI batsman who was of test quality. Pressure breaks even the toughest of batsmen. Ponting only enjoyed his peak because he had Hayden, Waugh and Gilchrist besides him.

As a proof, after the old legends retired, Ponting became a shell of what he was. He definitely thrived with support and failed without.

Lara was a better test batsman than Ponting by every metric.

Lara and McGrath were often neck-to-neck.

Against AD though, he truly did bottle but returned to almost win single-handingley against AUS the next year.

Lara was a superior player and also a fine gentleman. I have never seen Lara doing sledging. He never needed sledging to perform well.

Ponting was a good player but he crossed the line many times with sledging.

Even Sachin didn't play that well against AD.
Only Steve Waugh,Mark Waugh stood up against AD.
As far as McGrath is concerned Lara averages 40 against him.

Ponting was a nobody in subcontinent. He was in all honesty a better version of David Warner. Outstanding peak ruthless matchwinner everywhere except in subcontinent and was generally poor in England.

If you are telling ponting is nobody in sc conditions then i say you have no knowledge of cricket.
I agree ponting didnt do well in india but he did well in srilanka in 1999 tour where every australian batsmen didnt do well but ponting played murali very well and still averages better than dravid and kallis in srilanka.
Remember in 2006 when australia toured bangladesh in first test it was gilchrist who saved them from having follow on but during chasing 300 runs it was ponting who saved defeat from bangladesh.
He averages 40 in England and it is not bad average.

He's still a nobody in Asian bloc.

And he's quite poor in England.
