Tottenham Hotspur FC | 2018-19 Season Discussion

Tottenham Hotspur’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was “lucky” not to knock down pedestrians or damage cars when driving erratically at the end of an evening in which he was “showered with drinks” at a restaurant, a court has heard.

The 31-year-old Frenchman caught police attentionwhen he was spotted “veering” across Gloucester Place in central London in a new Porsche Panamera, doing 15mph in a 30mph zone, and going through a red light in the early hours of 24 August, a month on from his World Cup heroics.

Westminster magistrates’ court heard officers spotted vomit in the car, which was carrying an unnamed passenger, while Lloris, of East Finchley in north London, had to be helped from the vehicle. He pleaded guilty to being more than two times the legal drink-drive limit and was fined £50,000.

Sentencing Lloris, magistrate Amanda Barron said the fine represented the seriousness of the offence as well as the goalkeeper’s financial means, although details of his salary were not disclosed in court. “This is a very serious offence, as you know,” she said. “Not only were you putting your own life at risk but also that of your passenger. It was pure luck that you did not cause damage to other vehicles or pedestrians in the central London area.”

Outlining the case, prosecutor Henry Fitch said: “Shortly before 2.20am, officers were on patrol in an unmarked vehicle when their attention was drawn to a Porsche – it was moving strangely and doing 15mph in a 30mph zone. It veered a number of times towards parked vehicles, nearly clipping them, before correcting itself. It then went through a red light.”

He said the officers saw there was a passenger in the front of the car and vomit nearby. Lloris was later “helped from the car”, and gave a sample containing 80 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit in England and Wales is 35mcg.

Defence counsel David Sonn said Lloris had been dining with “two friends” at a restaurant. He had initially booked a taxi but it cancelled, prompting Lloris to drive – something described by Mr Sonn as “the first of a number of unwise decisions”. Without mentioning the name of the restaurant or Lloris’s two guests, Mr Sonn said the player and his friends “were showered with hospitality, given the circumstances, not just by the restaurant but by others there, who were sending drinks to them”.

He added: “By 2am he was completely drunk. At that moment he should have left the vehicle where it was. But, as Mr Lloris pointed out to me, it is when you’re drunk you’re likely to make mistakes – that was to drive home.”

Mr Sonn also acknowledged his client’s fall from grace after being arrested. He said: “On 15 July he was arguably the proudest man on the planet – having captained France to the World Cup victory. Just 40 days later, he was arrested. He experienced the indignity of being handcuffed and put in a police station overnight. The spectacular fall from grace is not lost on Mr Lloris.”

Lloris, who wore a dark suit with no tie, spoke only to confirm his personal details and to admit a charge of drink driving.

He was fined £50,000, plus costs and a victim surcharge, and banned from driving for 20 months.

The magistrate said the punishment acknowledged the seriousness of the offence and the aggravating circumstances of having a passenger in the car, but also his admission at the earliest stage, including his statement released to the press shortly after his arrest.

Lloris, who made his way into the court building flanked by two members of his entourage, left the building without comment. His club, for whom Lloris has made more than 200 league appearances since signing in 2012, also declined to comment.

After sentencing, Joshua Harris, director of campaigns for charity Brake, said: “It is disappointing to see that someone who is a role model to many thousands of football fans has admitted breaking the law by drink-driving. We expect the captain of Tottenham Hotspur and his national team to be setting a good example, not flouting the law in such a manner. This kind of dangerous behaviour is selfish, illegal and puts lives at risk.”

The fall from grace didnt take long.. I think we have to bring in a new keeper next season or give Paulo Gazzaniga a chance. Vorm is way past his days.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said it was important to follow up their dramatic qualification for the Champions League last 16 in midweek with victory against Burnley in the league.

The Londoners needed Lucas Moura's 85th-minute equaliser at Barcelona on Tuesday to earn a spot in the knockout round, and another late strike on Saturday meant they keep up the pressure on the Premier League's top two.

This time it was substitute Christian Eriksen who came to their rescue when he slammed his shot past Joe Hart in the 91st minute.

"It is a very good week for us and a fantastic win for us today," Pochettino told BBC's Match of the Day. "It is so important to be focused and try to keep our energy.

"After the Barcelona game and qualifying for the next stage of the Champions League, it is difficult to find the way to perform like this.

"Today I congratulate my players' effort and the fans. It was a late victory but so important for us."

It looked as if the Clarets would come away with a deserved point following a tremendous defensive display. They limited Spurs to a handful of clear-cut chances, with Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min both going close, while Hart produced a magnificent save to deny Erik Lamela.

The victory moves third-placed Spurs to 39 points and within three of Liverpool in second. Burnley remain in 17th with 12 points - two points above the relegation zone.

Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli was struck on the head by a plastic bottle thrown from the crowd during the Carabao Cup quarter-final at Arsenal.

The 22-year-old was hit near the touchline as Arsenal prepared to take a throw-in in the 73rd minute at Emirates Stadium.

He reacted with a 2-0 gesture to fans - referencing the scoreline at the time.

"In a different country, maybe they close the stadium for a few games," said Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino.

"It's lucky it wasn't a big problem but I think people need to be careful, and we need to try and avoid this type of action. Some people behave very bad."

Arsenal have told BBC Sport they are examining CCTV to find the person who threw the bottle.

Alli had earlier scored the second goal and Spurs went on to reach the semi-finals with a 2-0 victory.

Wednesday's incident follows a banana skin being thrown towards Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the Premier League match between the sides at the same venue on 2 December.

The Spurs fan responsible was fined and banned from football for four years on Tuesday.

BBC Radio 5 live pundit Dion Dublin, who was co-commentating on the game, said: "It's sad to see. It's mindless. Why would you do that?

"It must have had water or something in it to reach Dele Alli. Why would you risk being idiots?

"Just support your club, don't do ridiculous things like that."

When asked about the incident after the game, Alli told Sky Sports: "It is what it is. It made the goal a bit sweeter and the win."

An EFL spokesperson told BBC Sport the matter would be up to the Football Association to investigate, but they would "assist" if required.

Dele Alli: Arsenal identify image of bottle-thrower during loss to Tottenham

Arsenal say they have identified an image of the person who threw a bottle at Tottenham's Dele Alli on Wednesday and are "embarrassed" by the incident.

England midfielder Alli, 22, was struck on the head by a plastic bottle during Spurs' 2-0 win in the Carabao Cup quarter-final at Emirates Stadium.

    Police are investigating the incident.

"Anyone identified will receive a lengthy club ban and their details will be passed to the police to commence legal proceedings," said the club.

Alli was hit by a bottle thrown from the crowd as Arsenal prepared to take a throw-in in the 73rd minute.

The Metropolitan Police says it is working with Arsenal to try to identify the person responsible, but no arrests have been made.

"We have all been embarrassed by the individual who threw a bottle at Dele Alli," Arsenal added in a statement.

"Behaviour of this type has no place at Emirates Stadium and after analysing CCTV footage, which showed him leaving the stadium after throwing the bottle, we have identified an image of the suspect.

"We are liaising with the Metropolitan Police and investigations continue in order to apprehend the culprit."

The Football Association is aware of the incident and will support the police and clubs as they look into the matter.

Alli will face no action for responding with a 2-0 gesture to fans - referencing the scoreline.

I feel that Spurs are a likeable team. Promote youth + lots of English players, don't spend tons of money yet have been one of the most consistent teams in recent seasons. People keep on using the argument against them that they haven't won any trophies but they are heading in the right direction.

Poch was celebrating his 26th wedding anniversay so nice to see the score at 2-6.

Spurs have a good XI but imo not enough squad depth to win the title. A couple of injuries to their main players will see a different team.

Agreed, they need to get some new players in January but Poch is already dropping hints they might not buy anyone since the squad is full atm but we should definitely sell some dead weight like Janssen, Wanyama, Llorente, Nkoudou and Vorm to make space. Dembele is also gonna leave as his contract wont be extended and Toby too. Poch is slowly giving some game time to more academy players who are doing quite decent but lack the experience needed for big games.

Haven't watched todays highlights but it seems the hectic festive period hasn't helped Spurs. You can't win a league title without spending to increase your squad depth. Let's hope for Spurs the likes of Kane dont get injured because there is no replacement.

Going 1-0 up and losing 1-3 to Wolves is a really bad result for Spurs who were keeping up with Liverpool but now are 9 points behind.

at Kane who just a few days back was insisting how the decision not to invest in the squad during the summer had been justified. Nine points behind the leaders I would strongly disagree with him. A player like him and Dele Alli won't hang around for to long if his Spurs continue to be an also-ran team. If Mauricio Pochettino departs for Man Utd in the summer as rumoured the exit door at Spurs could be a revolving one.

Tottenham say their new stadium will not be ready to host matches until at least March.

Spurs were originally scheduled to move into the new White Hart Lane stadium in September but the project has suffered construction delays.

The club took their latest decision after an update from contractors.

"I should like to apologise to our fans and thank you for your continued patience," said Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

The new ground, which will also host NFL games, has a capacity of 62,062 and is located on the site of their old White Hart Lane home.

In December, several thousand season ticket-holders were allowed to explore the South Stand during a fan familiarisation event.

"The response from those who attended the familiarisation event was great to hear and reinforced our commitment to deliver an exceptional matchday experience for everyone," added Levy.

"We shall now seek clarity in respect of building test schedules and test event dates and provide further information on these in the next two to three weeks."

Tottenham, who host Manchester United at Wembley on Sunday in the Premier League, said in a statement that top-flight matches against Watford, Newcastle and Leicester would also be held at the national stadium.

Additionally, the home leg of their last-16 Champions League tie with Borussia Dortmund and any FA Cup fifth-round fixture, if they reach that stage, will also take place at Wembley.

Their next home game after that would be a Premier League game against north London rivals Arsenal on 2 March, but it is considered highly unlikely police or safety advisory groups would want that to be the first game at a new ground.

That would mean the game against Crystal Palace on 16 March could be Tottenham's first at their new home.

Tottenham are investigating an allegation of racism against winger Son Heung-min by one of their own supporters during Sunday's 1-0 loss to Manchester United at Wembley.

It is understood the club has spoken to the supporter who made the allegation on social media during the Premier League match.

Spurs will work with the fan and stadium safety officials to try to identify the person alleged to have abused the 26-year-old South Korea international.

Last month a Tottenham fan who threw a banana skin during the north London derby at Arsenal was banned from football for four years and fined.

A 23-year-old man is under police investigation after being arrested on suspicion of using anti-Semitic language before Tottenham's 1-0 win over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg on 8 January.

He was one of three people arrested at Wembley on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.

Why would anyone abuse their own players? And what did he do wrong anyway to trigger this reaction. I watched the game and IIRC it's not like he missed any great chances or anything, majority of saves De Gea made were against Kane, Alli, Eriksen or Alderweireld. The only time I'd expect someone to abuse their own player (don't get me wrong, it still wouldn't be justifiable at all, but a bit more understandable in the heat of the moment) is if they were to miss an easy chance but that didn't even happen to him. I hope they can identify the fan and ban him permanently, if he is racist to his own player over nothing, imagine what he will be like to an opposition player.

Yep looks like he is out for a month or more, Lucas Moura is also out for another week or two and Son returns end of the month. We have Llorente and Lamela to cover but I feel like with those two it will be tough to beat Chelsea in Fa cup and Palace in EFL cup.

I think buying Malcolm from Barcalona is a perfect option, we scouted him and he has the quality. They will surely let him leave in January since he is getting no game time under Valverde anyway. A new midfielder is also needed.

Spurs are falling apart as always seems to be the case. Kane could be out for a while after limping off versus Man Utd. Son will be playing in the Asian games further weakening them. I don't see what all the fuss about Mauricio Pochettino is with Man Utd strongly being linked to him. He's not even taken Spurs to a major final yet. They won't be winning anything this season.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane will be out until March after injuring ankle ligaments in Sunday's 1-0 Premier League defeat by Manchester United.

Spurs say the England captain, 25, will return to training in early March.

Kane, Tottenham's top scorer this season with 20 goals, is likely to miss both legs of the Champions League last-16 tie with Borussia Dortmund.

He will also be unavailable for the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea on 24 January.

Spurs, who are third in the Premier League - nine points behind leaders Liverpool - are likely to be without Kane for the games against Arsenal and Chelsea.

Tottenham forward Son Heung-min is currently on international duty with South Korea at the Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

Son, who has scored 12 goals, could be unavailable until February depending on how far South Korea progress. The final is on 1 February.

France midfielder Moussa Sissoko was substituted with what appeared to be a hamstring injury against United at Wembley.

Oooops. And with Son going away on international duty, is this where Spurs' season starts to crash? Lots of big games coming up that Kane will miss. Heck, if they go on a bad run, then not even top 4 is guaranteed, that would a nightmare for them!

Looks like we probably wont panic buy from the signs, Son is back in the end of the month or earlier so he can cover for Kane and Moura looks to be back this week or next. I think we can survive till then. Hopefully..

Tottenham have sold midfielder Mousa Dembele to Chinese Super League side Guangzhou R&F for £11m.

Dembele, 31, was due to be out of contract in the summer but will seal a move after international clearance.

He had flown to China to join Beijing Guoan but complications with the deal saw Guangzhou move for the Belgium international.

"I go with an unbelievable feeling and a certain love for the club," said Dembele. "It has been very special."

"Sometimes you separate in a bad way but I don't feel it in a bad way. Everyone has been positive with me and has wished me luck and happiness. "The club always treated me fairly.

"It has been an unbelievable experience for me and I will always remember it."

A large pay rise and playing in a less physical league are believed to be behind Dembele's decision to leave, while Tottenham are trying to trim the squad.

Dembele joined Tottenham for £15m from Fulham in 2012 and made 250 appearances but has only played 13 times this season.

Tottenham are not under "pressure" to sign a new forward this month despite captain Harry Kane being injured, says manager Mauricio Pochettino.

England skipper Kane is not due to return to training until March after damaging ankle ligaments.

Pochettino acknowledged the 25-year-old's absence will affect Spurs' performances.

But the Argentine added: "I think it's not going to change our mind about the view of the squad."

Who will score the goals for Spurs with Kane injured?
Spurs, third in the Premier League table and nine points behind leaders Liverpool, are still competing on four fronts.

They will take a 1-0 lead to Chelsea in their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg, and then meet Crystal Palace in the FA Cup fourth round before facing Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last 16.

Asked on Friday whether he was under pressure to find a replacement for Kane, Pochettino said: "When he is one of the best strikers in Europe, it is going to affect performances.

"Always we're open to improving our squad, to adding players that can improve us. But I think that's not going to put pressure on us to sign some players.

"We know very well the market now is so difficult, and the circumstance that we have. Of course, like always I tell you, if we identify the player that is going to help us and can add qualities that we don't have in the squad, we're more than open to trying [to make] that happen.

"But at the moment I think there's not too many possibilities to add this type of player that can improve us."

A Harry Winks header in injury time saw Tottenham come from behind to beat relegation-threatened Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Spurs looked set to lose ground on league leaders Liverpool, on a day they lost Dele Alli to injury after he had earlier equalised for the visitors, but Winks stooped low in the 93rd minute to head past Sergio Rico from close range.

Fulham had nine shots on goal in an impressive first half and they took a deserved lead when Tottenham striker Fernando Llorente scored an own goal.

The Spaniard, making his first Premier League start of the season in place of the injured Harry Kane, inadvertently beat Hugo Lloris from close range while attempting to clear the danger inside his own six-yard box after a Jean Michael Seri corner.

The hosts thought they had doubled their lead five minutes before the interval but Aleksandar Mitrovic's header was ruled out as the Serbian was adjudged to be offside.

However, Spurs responded in the second period and they drew level six minutes after the interval when Alli ghosted in behind the Fulham defence to head a pin-point Christian Eriksen cross past Rico.

And Winks completed the comeback in stoppage time when he stooped low from five yards out to meet substitute Georges-Kevin Nkoudou's cross and break Fulham's resistance.

Spurs remain in third after the win, nine points behind Liverpool, while Fulham stay in 19th, seven points from safety.

Spurs find a way despite Kane and Son's absence
The 50th meeting between these two London clubs saw Tottenham - the side with the best away record in the league - facing the division's worst defence.

However, Spurs were without their two top goalscorers because of injury (Kane) and international commitments (Son Heung-min), and for 50 minutes, they looked devoid of ideas and opportunities to break down their well-organised opposition.

Mauricio Pochettino's men had just four shots in the first half which was less than half the number Fulham produced (9).

The man chosen to play instead of talisman Kane made an impact at the wrong end and Son's replacement, Erik Lamela, only managed one shot at goal in the 79 minutes he was on the field.

Spurs were better after the break as Eriksen's influence on the game began to grow, but when Llorente had a late chance to make amends for his earlier mistake, his header drifted wide with the game heading for a draw.

Kane is not expected to return to the side until March, and with Llorente showing signs of rustiness at Craven Cottage, Pochettino may be forced into the market for an alternative striking option as the midfielders may not always be able to bail them out of jail.

Late win for Spurs but Dele Alli injured. Along with Kane also injured and Son away on international duty, things could go downhill for Tottenham soon, will be 10x weaker without Alli, Kane and Son. Up next, Chelsea away in 2nd leg of EFL Cup SF

I guess Liverpool or Man City can win the title this season. I would much rather we win it once we’ve moved to the new stadium.

Dele Alli is not expected to return until March due to a hamstring strain, Tottenham Hotspur gave confirmed.

The England international limped off against Fulham on Sunday and was in visible agony as he left the pitch.

Incredibly, Dele has suffered the same injury twice already this season and missed the Champions League clash with Barcelona at Wembley.

Spurs said on Twitter: “Following scans and clinical assessment, we can confirm that @dele_official has suffered a hamstring strain, sustained during Sunday’s match.

“Dele will now undergo a period of rehabilitation with our medical staff, with the expectation of returning to training in early March.”

He joins his England team-mate Harry Kane in the treatment room and is set to miss the club’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg with Chelsea, and the potential final, the Champions League last-16 first leg against Borussia Dortmund and a host of important Premier League games.

Big blows with Alli and Kane out for a while. Spurs won't win the EPL and wil struggle without them. Their gaffer should consider going in to the market for some loan deals.
