Pakistan vs India | Asia Cup: Super Four | Dubai | Sep 23, 2018 | Pakistan Innings

    Game day

Hope we perform better than the 19th.

    =====

India may have bossed their clash against Pakistan in the league stage of the Asia Cup 2018, but with a lot more at stake in their Super Four game on Sunday, 23 September, things could be different.

    Overview

    India v Pakistan
Asia Cup 2018, Super Four, Match 3
    Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai
Sunday, 23 September, 3.30pm local time, 11.30am GMT

India will definitely not be complacent, especially given what happened during the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. India had beaten their rivals by 124 runs (DLS method) in the group stage, and were favourites for the title, but Pakistan stormed back in the final, famously winning by 180 runs.

In their previous match-up, Pakistan were far from at their best. Their batsmen, apart from Babar Azam and Shoaib Malik to an extent, crumbled all too easily, and they were bundled for 162. Then, once Rohit Sharma, the India captain, was allowed to settle in, there was only going to be one outcome.

A batting effort more representative of Pakistan’s capabilities was on display in their next match against Afghanistan, where all of Imam-ul-Haq, Azam and Malik scored half-centuries to power them in a nervy chase – they won by three wickets, negating the threat of Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

More of that will be expected this time around against India, especially with Mickey Arthur, Pakistan’s coach, not hiding his disappointment with the way his batsmen succumbed in their earlier encounter – “we sort of batted outside our roles, which was very disappointing,” he had said.

The real point of concern for Pakistan is fatigue. That game against Afghanistan went down to the wire, which would have been exhausting both mentally and physically. Furthermore, that was played in Abu Dhabi, and they would have had to make the trip to Dubai the next day. India, meanwhile, have no such concerns, being based in Dubai.

All in all, with the stakes – a spot in the tournament final – a lot higher, this one should be an engrossing contest.

Rohit Sharma has been in excellent form Rohit Sharma has been in excellent form
    Key players
Rohit Sharma (India): The opener hasn’t let captaincy bog him down. He has scored 52 and 83* in his last two outings, but more importantly, has caught the eye with his captaincy as well. “Every time he has got an opportunity to captain India, he has shown his acumen,” Sunil Gavaskar said. “He has shown how patient he can be and then as a batsman, the added responsibility, only makes him better.”

Babar Azam (Pakistan): How Pakistan’s batting fares will go a long way to deciding this clash, and that makes Azam crucial to their chances. He has scored 33, 47, and 66 in Pakistan’s three matches so far, and coming in at one-drop, he will play a big role in nipping out any potential implosion in the bud. The Indian bowlers will want his wicket quickly.

    Conditions
The dry heat will once again test players’ limits – temperatures are expected to touch 40°C. The pitches at the Asia Cup have so far assisted spinners plenty, and there’s nothing to suggest that will change.

    Squad
India: Rohit Sharma (c), Shikhar Dhawan, Khaleel Ahmed, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, MS Dhoni (wk), Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Manish Pandey, KL Rahul, Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, Deepak Chahar, Siddarth Kaul

Pakistan: Sarfraz Ahmed (c & wk), Fakhar Zaman, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Amir, Shadab Khan, Imam ul Haq, Shan Masood, Babar Azam, Asif Ali, Haris Sohail, Mohammad Nawaz, Fahim Ashraf, Hasan Ali, Junaid Khan, Usman Shinwari, Shaheen Afridi

Unimpressed with Pakistan’s performance in the Asia Cup, former offspinner Saeed Ajmal has urged the team to show better application when it faces India in the Asia Cup Super-4 match on Sunday. Ajmal came down hard on his former team’s performance against India in the league match that saw Pakistan lose comprehensively by eight wickets.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Ajmal reckons India have adapted better to conditions in Dubai than the home team, terming it a major factor behind the team’s unbeaten run so far in the tournament.

“With Hardik Pandya being injured, Ravindra Jadeja came in against Bangladesh and look how well he adapted,” Ajmal said. “The allrounder starts off with four wickets in the game. This is what makes you sit up and take note. If you notice, India haven’t looked to play attacking cricket with bat in hand. They have waited to launch an onslaught and have kept wickets in hand. The openers have given the team a good start in all the games. Rohit has been top-class both with bat and as captain. And now you have an MS Dhoni who looked in good form against Bangladesh.

“If you come to the bowling attack, you have Jasprit Bumrah who has been exceptional. Then you have someone like Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Bhuvneshwar can bowl with both the new and old ball. Thanks to these two India’s death bowling has become strong. The spinners have also done an excellent job except for Yuzvendra Chahal.”

Ajmal also understood that India are a far more experienced team than Pakistan.

“They have the experience and if you look at the Pakistan team, you only have a Shoaib Malik who is a senior pro. India on the other hand have 4/5 players who have been in the team for a while now. Yes, Pakistan might have beaten India in the final of the Champions Trophy, but that doesn’t take away the fact that India have experience on their side,” he said.

The last time the two sides met, Pakistan batsmen struggled to get going against India and were bowled out for 162. Barring Shoaib Malik and Babar Azam, no batsman showed any resistance. More than anything, the manner in which Pakistan went down has disappointed Ajmal.

“I have just one message for them and that is for them to play positively. They shouldn’t think too far ahead and when you have some quality bowlers in your ranks, you just need to stay positive and look to have the right attitude. In the last game, India won one sided and when the team does that minus Virat Kohli, that is unacceptable. A good contest is what is expected, after that if you lose well bad luck,” said Ajmal.

“Losing with dignity is one thing and getting thrashed is another. I feel that Pakistan have a better bowling attack than India’s and it is the batting which let the team down in the last game. If the batsmen can give the bowlers something to play with, things can change. You have to realise that India have the batting to score 300. On the other hand, the Pakistan attack is one which can keep them under check. But, even then, the batsmen have to put at least 250 on the board if they bat first.”

Ajmal believes Pakistan should play at least two frontline spinners against India on Sunday. With Shadab Khan declared fit, the legspinner is set to take his place back ahead of Haris Sohail but if Ajmal believes, Mohammad Nawaz should retain his place in the side so that the two could operate in tandem on the slow and turning surfaces of Dubai.

“If you ask me, I would say Mohammad Nawaz and Shadab Khan should be playing together as spin is the way to go,” he said. “Secondly, the bowlers need the support of the batsmen and Pakistan must score 250 plus as all the teams have managed to do that when it comes to winning games. In this case, they must also remember that India chase really well and if they cannot put at least 250 on the board, the Pakistan bowlers will not have much to do. They should fight till the end and make this a contest that shall be remembered for ages.”

The Former team manager of the Pakistan cricket team, Intikhab Alam thinks that only good fielding can help Pakistan win against India in their second match of the Super Four stage in the Asia Cup on Sunday.

Intikhab while talking to the media on Saturday said that a couple missed chances against Afghanistan put Pakistan under serious pressure.

“You need to be at your best with the fielding otherwise the same situation would occur as it happened with Pakistan against Afghanistan,” Intikhab said.

He further said that the team need to play with the positive mindset against India because that match is really crucial for the green caps in terms of directly qualifying for the Final of the tournament.

“The boys should stick to their plans and try to not take immense pressure which can lead to another setback for them,” he said.

On the other hand, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt advised Sarfraz and his men to not create panic and to play fearless cricket against India.

“Without any doubt, India is a hard but not an impossible opponent to beat but there is just a need to play fearless cricket against them,” Salman said.

He was quick to add that the batsmen need to build long partnerships and try to spend the time on the crease.

“The only thing which can pull them out of pressure against India is to play long innings,” he said.

Moreover, discarded fast-bowlers Mohammad Irfan and Wahab Riaz also backed Pakistan team to perform well against India in a high-pressure match on Sunday.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan has already won their first match of Super Four stage against Afghanistan to gain two crucial points.

If they win against India on Sunday they will make their position strong to advance to the final of the 14th edition of Asia Cup.

I really hope Arthur has spoken to our players about the dot balls and the importance of keeping the scoreboard ticking.

    Thanks.

Looks like Indian players take the game too seriously. Ravi Jadeja also spoke in the conference on how the game is the biggest match of cricket and now Shikhar. Hmm @Bhaag Viru Bhaag bhai looks like the fake posturing of some posters is getting exposed here

On the contrary, wasnt the pitch fresh this time?

It's 39 degrees out there today.

Pakistan won toss. Batting first. Makes sense a bit considering how hot it is out there.

Amir is in instead of Shinwari. Shadab is in instead of Haris.

Anything below 300 should be an easy game for India.

Pathetic Sarfraz has almost gifted the match to India.

    Its a flat pitch.

Anything less than 250 should be curtains for Pakistan no matter how good our bowling is in my opinion.
