Gani is not wrong in saying that Gill is untested, especially in red ball. I have no doubt that Gill's potential is much higher than Vihari's. But that doesn't mean that he is already better than Vihari, today.

On merit, Vihari deserves chances before Gill.

Like I said he deserves his chance for piling on the runs in domestic. But scoring heavily in domestic does not necessarily mean you can cut it in international cricket especially tests. Otherwise Rohit Sharma would've been a regular considering he had an FV average of 60 odd at one point. If anything Nair was treated a bit unfairly.

It also doesn't mean that you can't cut it in international cricket. For every Rohit Sharma and Aakash Chopra, there are 50 other Indian batsmen who have gone on to have international careers ranging from "good to Sachin". Vihari deserves a chance to prove himself.

KL Rahul isn't going to get dropped from Australian tour! But I guess he might be passenger in that tour most times. Dhawan may get selected, M.Vijay may get a call back, If Agarwal plays a match and does well (probably in next test?) then he may get some matches! This is going to be Rahul's story! (He was a passenger even in Asia Cup!) I don't know what it helps him and to his team with this passenger business! So even I agree that he may do well if he is dropped and he had to work on his technique, mental strength or whatever! OR he should be given permanent run like Marwan Atapattu regardless of results if he is so special and if India really has that much talent-dearth (it appears so with Dhawan being asked to open in Tests, DK & co playing in LOIs...) he may come good one day! Both team management & himself are equally to be blamed for his current state! Yes team management didn't handle him well, but at the same time he should have pushed himself to take up the challenge & cement his place! One solution I can give is he should forget LOIs completely for a while except IPL (even if it means he is not part of World Cup! I know its a heart break, but guess he may still be part of the squad as a backup keeper/opener!) that can improve his defense for Test-Opening (I am sure about this!)

Once he has absolutely cemented as Test Opener, I think it can give him enormous confidence to handle even LOIs (maybe even as opener in coming days with aging Dhawan/Rohit!) once he understands the right balance between attack & defense, LOI & Tests! He can concentrate on the follow up WC (everyone will be not so lucky as Sachin & Kohli to get multiple world cups! The thing that actually matters is how effective you are in the given chance & what are the results! Sachin & Kohli have had just 1 successful WC so far, Sachin in his last leg & Kohli in his first leg!) So he should have positive hopes about his prospects and plan accordingly (He may even talk to team management about all these matters!)

Teams like WI,SRL,Bangladesh,Afganistan,Zimbabwe should be restricted to play tests on home soil
, on each other's soil and in UAE,they are or may be competitive there. But for viewers' sake, not in India,Australia,England,Newzealand and South Africa. When they travel there they are enough to spoil the beauty of test cricket. We are just tired to see these huge margin of innings defeats.

You do have to play those teams in India,Australia,England,Newzealand and South Africa. Otherwise they will never get chance to play and improve against those teams.

This is blatant pitch tampering. When Indians bat, it is a road. When opponent bats, it is a minefield/green mamba/dustbowl. Big 3 cannot keep getting away with this.

Agree with this. Kohli and Co. scores on flat track and Indians bowlers get help of tampered pitches.

His performance in Tests is extremely frustrating. He scored a century in the last Test in England, giving an indication that he is able to play in English conditions. However, he was a dud in the earlier Tests when India really needed a contribution from him.

RAJKOT, India – The WINDIES bowlers had another laborious day in the field of the second day of the first Test match versus India in the Paytm India vs West Indies, Test Series in Rajkot.

India closed day one on 364/4 with Captain Virat Kohli on 72 not out and Rishabh Pant on 17 not out. The pair continued this morning where they left off. Kohli in particular took a liking to Shannon Gabriel’s pace, dispatching the WINDIES- quick for a handful of boundaries. Not to be outdone, Pant got on the attack to Devendra Bishoo and Roston Chase.

Kohli eventually brought up his century as he shared in a 133-run partnership with Pant. Wicketkeeper Pant smashed 4 sixes and 8 fours as he raced towards a century which would have been the fourth of the Indian innings. But Bishoo had other plans, as Pant was caught by Keemo Paul for an agonising 8-run short of what would’ve been a brilliant hundred.

Ravendra Jadeja joined Kohli and they posted a 64-run partnership before Shermon Lewis returned for the scalp of Kohli. Jadeja pushed on and was rewarded with his first Test century. As the last pair in the wicket, Jadeja and Mohammad Shami picked up the singles. But Kohli had enough and waved his team in, declaring on 649/9. Bishoo was the best WINDIES bowler, taking 4/217 followed by Shermon Lewis with 2/93.

The WINDIES never got the solid foundation they needed as Shami uprooted Kraigg Brathwaite’s off-stump with the score on 2. It was a continuous slide after that, as wickets kept falling at crucial moments.

The top order did not withstand the Indian bowling attack, as Shami accounted for both openers and then a horrendous mix-up saw Shimron Hetmyer run-out just when he looked to be settling. At the close of play the WINDIES were 94/6, still some 555 runs behind India’s first innings total of 649/9.

Speaking to CWI Media after, WINDIES Head Coach Stuart Lew said, “We still have plenty to play for in this Test match. It’s now time for a couple of the top six batsmen to stick their hands up in the second innings and show some fight.”

With all the TALENT, if you do not have the right combination of players - like Kohli GENIUS captain did - you are bound to lose badly. I think WI team do not have some players over compensation/injury issues. No shame in losing to India, which is far superior. India should think of giving more exposure to Kuldeep and other bowlers like Umesh who have had lesser match practice of late.

Yes let's drop all the players who haven't performed overseas.

KL out, Rahane out, Pujara out, Ashwin out, Vijay out, Shami out, Kuldeep out, Pant out, Saha out.

Shaw hasn't played overseas so he's out too. Mayank also out because he's never played outside.

Let's just go with Kohli, Ishant and Bumrah. Thr only people who have performed every match overseas. Three players will be enough to whitewash Australia, SA, England abroad. Why bother fielding all 11 players?

The same West Indies will go and thrash the other sub continent teams. Just wait for their Bangladesh tour to begin.

So give credit to the Indian team. This team has some all time great Indian cricketers.

WI should have batted little sensibly. At least tire out the bowlers for next test.

West Indies is not that bad, won a test in UAE (MisYou team) and England recently. Just that this Indian team is one of the mightiest test outfits ever assembled in SC conditions. Look what Kohli and co did in Sri Lanka compared to other teams. I think even a World XI will get humiliated by a fit and firing Indian team anywhere in Asia. I am a huge fan of the Indian team of the late 2000s but I don't see how they can compete with the current XI we have.

Since the 2013 Aussie series this is India's record at home:

    W 22
    L 1 (against Australia in Pune 2017)

Very few draws, that too mostly rain affected. Feel sorry for West Indies, simply a class above and ruthless this Indian team in home conditions.

We play too few tests at home, can't believe we don't have a dedicated home season for tests like England, Australia and South Africa. After this short WI series we will have to wait till October 2019 for a home test.

Lambs don't win matches in SA and ENG. Lambs get bowled out for 43 in West Indies.

India are lambs mainly in England because our batsmen are weak against conventional swing. In fact we might be the easiest match up for England in those conditions.

In rest of Asia and WI India does well. I expect us to compete better in SA/Aus, maybe even NZ but we hardly tour there.

I think future line up will be better. There were lot of pass by sell date players. Not like England was any good against swing. But for England's lower order scoreline would have been completely different.

RAJKOT, India – The WINDIES suffered one of their heaviest defeats ever when they lost the first Test of the Paytm India vs West Indies, Test Series in Rajkot, by an innings and 272 runs.

Starting day three on 94/6 and some 555 runs adrift of India’s first innings total of 649/9 declared, Roston Chase and Keemo Paul looked settled and ready to give the WINDIES a glimmer of hope of stretching the match.

Paul was the aggressor of the pair, ad he played fearless shots and charges to the Indian bowlers. He attacked Ashwin, Yadav and company when they came at him. The pacers also felt the brunt from his bat. Chase chose to take the more docile route, picking up singles and despatching the bad balls from India’s premier bowlers.

But just when his first Test half-century was in sight, he slashed at one and was caught for 47. Chase then soldiered on, since he was the last real batsman in the WINDIES line-up. Devendra Bishoo joined Chase and the pair continued the quiet build to a reasonable score with the current 7th wicket down.

Chase brought up his half-century but fell soon after for 53 when he was bowled by Ashwin. The rest of the batting line-up folded soon after, Bishoo the only other to get double figures. He remained not out on 17.

India enforced the follow-on and the WINDIES started their second innings with a more attacking style and confident defence. It showed when Kieran Powell struck a couple boundaries and a six within the first four overs. Brathwaite looked more settle than the first innings, but he did not last too long at the crease, Ashwin had him caught by Prithvi for 10. The WINDIES 32/1.

Powell continued, and it seemed he had found a patient partner in Shai Hope but Kuldeep Yadav trapped Hope lbw for 17 to start his wickets tally. Shimron Hetmyer looked dangerous and focused to make amends for the runout in the first innings. He struck a magnificent six but going for another big heave, got an outside edge to short leg and was caught for 11.

Sunil Ambris danced down the wicket facing his third delivery and was quickly stumped off another Kuldeep Yadav delivery. Despite the wickets falling around him, Powell soldiered, bringing up his half-century in just 92 deliveries. After he became Kuldeep Yadav’s third wicket. The only other batman to deal with the dead-end pressure, was Roston Chase, he made 20 in what would have been a “less than ideal” overnight and then this morning.

The WINDIES all out for 196/10. Kieran Powell and Roston Chase were the best batsmen for the WINDIES, with scores of 83nd 20 in the second innings. While the WINDIES’ started strong in the second innings, the batsmen could not defend as frequently as they should have.

Stand-in Captain Kraigg Brathwaite admitted “It’s not start we would like. We did not have the big partnerships as we would have liked, and I believe that’s what costed us the match. I told the guys to trust their abilities and defend their wicket, it wasn’t easy, and it was our downfall.”

Difference is the bowlers. India has far more ruthless bowlers at home now. Ashwin and Jadeja are phenomenal in Asian conditions, and the pacers take wickets whenever they are tired. So rarely gets under pressure in a session.

Rahane should be dropped now. He cant score anywhere now. Averaged 26 in England over 5 tests. Very soft cricketer as well.

Pujara should be persisted. He is also not good outside Asia but you cant drop whole team and he had a decent outing in England this time. So, persist with him. Rahul should be given one more chance and he should be paired with an young opener.

Dhawan has been given a lot of chances already and same for Sharma. Also, get in someone in place of Rahane.

My XI for Australia, first test would be:-

    Shaw
    Rahul
    Pujara
    Kohli
    ______(time to try Gill)
    Pant(wkt)
    Jadeja
    Kuldeep/Ashwin
    Shami
    Ishant
    Bumrah

Why Gill when Vihari and Nair are already there sitting on the bench?

Plus, Gill is not ready for test cricket. He hasn't even played 1 whole Ranji season.
