How come Shan Masood can score at a 75+ SR while Sami Aslam scores at a 39 SR on the same wicket? It's all about your mindset. Guys like Sami Aslam and Azhar Ali cannot and will not ever become great Test batsmen if all they think about is survival. Azhar Ali remains in the team because at least he scores big when he's set. Sami is the poster boy of anti-modern-Test cricket. He should never be allowed to open for Pakistan unless he changes his mindset on how to go about batting.

Sami Aslam, Saad Ali, and Usman Salahuddin have got 3 innings now against Aus and NZ A. Sami has failed twice whereas the other two have failed all 3 times. They will get one more innings before one of them makes way for M Saad in the second 4-day match against N A.

If these 3 are not picked for Pak test team against NZ and SA, they have on one else but themselves to blame. I hope our PakPassion experts are following their batting exploits.

Mohammad Saad has had a very poor QEA FC season so far, didn't deserve to be selected.

Usman Salahuddin and Saad Ali have done themselves no favours, the former has failed in most of his appearances so far for the A side while the latter has struggled this season after a great showing last year.

Shan Masood since he got dropped from the team:

Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2017/18: 304 runs at an average of 27.64 with one fifty
Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2018/19: 66 runs at an average of 16.50

The only thing that should be under the scanner is how he got selected. If he was selected for his performances in the List A format, then we may as well shut the QEA Trophy down.

Inzi has made the batsmen selections based on last year's completed Quaid Trophy. That is the reason you see likes of Saad Ali, Usman Salahuddin, and M Saad in there.

M Saad's stats do look bad. However, he did score in the 2 ODIs against NZ A, albiet at a slow pace. Seems like a test batsman and a late bloomer.

I completely agree that Shan and Rahat should not have been selected in this A team. While Shan has done exceptional in domestic limited overs cricket, his quaid-e-azam trophy record has been poor for the last 2 seasons. Seems someone wants to see Shan Masood back in test team. That is why he was drafted in the last minute against Aus in the warm up match and now selected here.

Well, he has now scored. So, it seems like he will be the backup opener for both NZ and SA tests. With Imam and Fakahr as your first choice openers, only thing that can keep Shan Masood out if if Hafeez is selected as the 3rd opener against NZ and SA. Don't think Sami Aslam is getting a chance anytime soon now, and perhaps deservedly so.

Saad Ali and Usman Salahuddin's selections are fair enough. Saad scored a hundred recently and has shown semblance of form. Plus, he didn't play any Tests despite being in the squad. Usman has performed in QEA and deserves chances with the A team too.

Mohammad Saad made runs last season, but just at a par average really (650 @ 38). Has a very poor FC record overall. And no performances this season. May as well select Fa... Al..

Agree on M Saad. But he scored those runs in one of the most difficult domestic season in Pak history, on green tops. So maybe selectors wanted to have a look. But the overall stats don't look great.

    From NZC:

Talented Wellington teenager Rachin Ravindra was the star turn for New Zealand A on a demanding second day of their four-day fixture against Pakistan A in Dubai.

The day began well for the New Zealand bowlers, who chipped out four wickets for 46 runs in 13 overs before the Pakistan declaration at 346 for nine.

By stumps, New Zealand A were 168 for six off 68 overs when bad light once more cut the day short. Allrounder Todd Astle was on 16 and seamer Kyle Jamieson on one.

However the 18-year-old Ravindra was the standout figure, making 70 on his first-class debut.

Pakistan's bowling was demanding through the hot day and the runs were hard to come by, the rate dropping to one an over late in the afternoon.

Captain Jeet Raval went early, bowled for one off 13 balls, while the other four dismissals were all to catches by wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan.

Opener George Worker grafted to 30 off 93 balls, putting on 40 with Will Young for the second wicket.

Young, a century-maker in one of the 50-over matches earlier in the tour, got to 23, while Dane Cleaver made four and test wicketkeeper BJ Watling 18 off 55 balls.

The 42-run stand between Ravindra and Watling for the fifth wicket was the best of the day.

All the while, double ICC Under 19 World Cup international Ravindra progressed past his half century and, scoring at a relatively decent clip, got to 70 before falling to left arm seamer Taj Wali off 119 balls, including two boundaries.

Ravindra, a century-maker during last season's World Cup in New Zealand, played all three List A matches on the United Arab Emirates trip and yesterday enhanced his growing reputation as having a distinctly bright future.

Earlier there were two more wickets for seamer Scott Kuggeleijn, who finished with four for 54 off 14 overs, while century-maker Shan Masood added three to his overnight score before going lbw to Jamieson for 167.

Jamieson ended the innings with three for 46 off 16 overs and Blair Tickner took two for 43 off 14.

So all the three middle order hopefuls, Saad, Usman, and Saud, failed. Time is running out for Saad and Usman. They have failed in 3 innings now. If they don’t turn things around in the next 1-3 innings, they will be dropped from the test team against NZ and SA, and may I say, deservedly so.

Impressive performance by Pak A bowlers in ongoing 4-Day game against NZ A as they have reduced visitors to 196/8 on day 3; NZ A still trail by 150 runs with Taj Wali, Waqas Ahmed & Kashif Bhatti taking 2 wickets apiece

I have to say hard work & dedication can cover for lack of natural ability significantly. If he gets a 2nd ton here, Shan Masood deserves to start the 1st Test against Kiwis. I don’t care what he he did in past, but the guy is at right age and putting unbelievable (for his reputation) scores in last 10-12 months in both format. No way, Imam deserves to be opening ahead of this guy in Test or ODI.

He has only made one fifty in FC cricket during the last 12 months, but really making a case for selection here... seems to have decided to play more positively as well.

Must have mixed with List A then. Playing positively, playing longer and playing all round - playing like a proper opener.

At just 29 (just, because he was born in Kuwait, schooled in Kuwait & UK, so I believe his official age now is 29, not 23-25), he is probably the hardest worker in the squad, extremely fit, articulate in conversation & well educated in British system (& liked by the coach) - a little better in cricket skills, I probably would have asked for a vice captain’s role, at least in Test team; for the time being, just a simple opening role is deserving.

Shan Masood is far better player than Sami Aslam. Sami Aslam's main problem is too timid, too slow, lack of confidence and lack of strike rotation.

New Zealand A's first four-day clash with their Pakistan counterparts is set for an intriguing finish on the final day at the ICC Academy in Dubai.

Pakistan A will start the last day at 193 for two in their second innings, holding an overall lead of 261.

The hosts hold the upper hand but the key question will be when Pakistan choose to declare with the pitch starting to show small signs of wear.

Lefthand opener Shan Masood completed his second century of the match, and the 10th of his first-class career, and was 100 not out when bad light stopped play early.

New Zealand captain Jeet Raval showed a willingness to keep the game open by declaring 68 runs behind Pakistan in their first innings. New Zealand pulled out at 278 for nine, but had seamers Logan van Beek and Blair Tickner to thank for getting that close to Pakistan.

New Zealand lost three for 28 in the first session to be in a parlous state at 196 for nine responding to Pakistan's first innings 346 for nine declared.

However Wellington’s van Beek, who has a first-class century to his name, and Central Districts' Tickner grafted admirably.

The last pair shared a stand of 82, with former Dutch international van Beek reaching 56 and Tickner 22 off 88 balls to hold up Pakistan's march to a dominant position.

When Scott Kuggeleijn removed opener Sami Aslam in the fifth over of Pakistan A's second innings, it gave New Zealand the ideal start.

However George Worker spilled a catch off Abid Ali in the same over, which would have had Pakistan wobbling. Masood and Ali then put on 134 for the second wicket to lay the platform for Pakistan A, before Ali fell to Tickner for 61.

Former test batsman Masood has had a top class match, his century following 167 in the first innings.

Pakistan A scored at a brisk rate in their second innings, indicating they fancy pressing hard for a win on the final day, which should set up the prospect of an entertaining day's cricket.

The match is the penultimate fixture of the eight-game New Zealand A tour, which will end with the second four-day clash in Abu Dhabi next week.

    Very confusing.

CI, the PCB and now NZ are saying it was Sami who was dismissed for four and Abid Ali scored 61.

Cricbuzz, however, is saying Sami came in at three and scored 58.

Based on one single match? Masood has a very poor 32.87 average in 107 First Class matches. That is more indicative of his true talent than this single match.

Shan Masood might have genuinely improved. One thing known about him is his hard work so it's very possible he has genuinely worked hard on his flaws. If he is selected in the squad for the New Zealand series, no one can say it is due to nepotism.

New Zealand A’s tour of the UAE is shaping up as a good one for Central Stags batsman, Will Young.

Fresh from a watershed century in the third one-dayer against Pakistan A, the 25-year-old has joined forces with BJ Watling to thwart his hosts on the final day of the first unofficial Test, at the ICC Academy in Dubai.

Young’s unbeaten 74 was the dominant hand in an unbeaten 89-run fifth-wicket partnership with Watling, as New Zealand A saw off the draw at 163 for four – having been earlier set a target of 310.

    Watling finished unbeaten on 47.

The innings wasn’t without its drama for New Zealand A, which lost both openers inside the first seven overs and another two wickets in consecutive overs after the lunch.

Young’s assignment began after the fall of George Worker’s wicket in the opening over and became considerably more difficult when Jeet Raval was bowled by Waqas Ahmed with the total at 12.

However, he rose to the challenge and played an accomplished hand, consolidating the innings - first in tandem with Rachin Ravindra, with whom he shared a third-wicket stand of 61, and then with Watling.

The match was an encouraging one for Ravindra, who marked his first-class debut with 70 in the first innings and battled bravely for an hour in the second before being trapped in front by left-arm spinner Saud Shakeel, for 27.

When Dane Cleaver followed him back an over later, New Zealand A were 74 for four.

Young, unbeaten on 19 at lunch, brought up his half century at the start of the 40thover (111 balls) and in total batted for more than three hours while striking 10 fours.

Together with Watling he ensured there would be no further setbacks; the pair bringing up the 50-stand in 86 minutes and off 138 balls, before navigating their way to stumps.

New Zealand A will now de-camp to Abu Dhabi in preparation for the second unofficial Test, starting on Tuesday.
