Can Rohit Sharma break Shahid Afridi's record of 351 ODI sixes?

Rohit Sharma has today hit his 200th six, in his 188th inning.

Afridi hit 351 in 369 innings.

Rohit is 31 1/2 yeard old. Is it possible for him to come close to or overtake Afridi?

I don't think so. Rohit will play for 6 more years at best. India is playing much less ODIs these days. Also, you may never know when his form dips.

    300 six is possible.

I hope its not the priority. Tendulkar wouod have hit 800 sixes in his ODI career if he went out there with the aim to have such a record. Aim is to score important runs and win matches for the team. This is just for fun. Hes already ahead at hitting rate wise.

Has hit 178 sixes in his last 105 innings (since becoming an opener in 2013) and with each year, his six hitting rate got better. In AST 2 years, in 40 ODIs, it’s 85 sixes, and 52 sixes in last 22 matches. Going by that he could get there in another 75-80 ODIs which is another 40 months away.

He will be around till 2023 WC in India, so 12000+ ODI runs, 45 100s and most sixes should be his target.

His name hitman is an appropriate one. If Virat is a Knight, a warrior who fights with immense work, Rohit is a like a skillful sharp shooter, a bowman. Why do all the work and fight, grinding out opponents, when you can just sit and take headshots.

If he plays as many innings as Afridi he will get there

    Afridi
    369 innings 351 sixes - 0.95 sixes per innings
    Rohit
    187 innings 202 sixes - 1.08 sixes per innings

He is going at a faster rate than Afridi in terms of innings. In terms of balls Afridi will remain unconquered as no team would allow someone to throw his wicket away carelessly for that long

I disagree. He wouldn't have if he went out with that aim because no other Board would have given him as many chances as Afridi received.

Him being Tendulkar arguably one of the most gifted batting talents ever seen, would have still managed to average a respectable 35 something an had a full career. But yea given the number of matches Afridi completely bottled because he couldn't control his instinct, no other board or captains would have shown as much patience.

Afridi played cricket with the aim of hitting sixes only and he is still behind Rohit who's already made himself one of the best ever ODI openers during the course.

Can't match Afridi's class in six hitting.

You have to keep in mind that he won't play all his matches on tiny IND grounds with roads and 3rd grade bowling.

We all know what he does in places like SA.

What a joke. Rohit has hit many sixes in big Australian ground more easy than lala can ever dream of. His failures in SA and six hitting ability both are pretty different thing which you are for no reason trying to connect. Today's ground was big and he was still hitting big sixes which could have been six on any ground. I doubt you even saw it and start to talk crap about it.

Afridi was highly overrated and was a better bowler than a batsman who only clicked once in a blue moon. All he knew was to seeing his bat and hoping he would get lucky and hit.

Folks, I respect Rohit for his lazy elegance and the timing when he connects bat with the ball.

But still, Afridi was a monster, he was ruling the world in six hitting even in the 90s. When it was still far too difficult.

His sixes are monsterous. He hits some of the longest sixes compared to others. Only guys like Yuvraj , Dhoni can match those sixes. He relies purely on timing.

Six hitting was not difficult. Not many wanted to play that way. once T20 started every goddamn guy started hitting sixes at will where Afridi couldn't do jack. Only difference is attitude.

It doesn't matter how you start, what matters is how you end & Rohit's strike rate in last 10 overs in odis is around 270+ & difference between him and next best is way to big.

third six; This guy is a monster!

    19.1
Lockie Ferguson to Rohit, SIX, you can't bowl short to this man, it's meat and drink for him. Dug in short from Ferguson and Rohit just swivels to help this pull over a leaping fine leg fielder. Used the pace nicely well

    17.6
Lockie Ferguson to Rohit, SIX, Rohit Sharma completes his fifty with a six. 38th half-century in ODIs for India's vice captain. Applauses ring around the ground and Dhawan congratulates him. It was short, no venom or nothing. Sits up nicely for Sharma, who swivels around and pulls it into the grassbanks behind square

    12.4
Ish Sodhi to Rohit, SIX, "Catch it, catch it" was the shout but it goes all the way over the fielder's head at deep mid-wicket. Did he misjudge it by running forward a bit too early? It was dropped short and Sharma jumps back to mow it towards deep mid-wicket. Lockie was the fielder, who leaped back at the ropes but it sails over his head. The breeze also benefiting Sharma there

Hitman is taking this record. I see no stopping now. Hes the most gifted six hitter ever in international cricket. I said international because Gayle may be the universal boss in domestic T20s but even he cant match the hitman in high intensity internationals against quality bowlers.

    213 sixes in 192 innings.

138 more to go. Assuming he will play cricket for 5 more years, he needs to hit 28 sixes each year.

For the record, since 27-Jan-18, Rohit has hit 50 sixes.

But anything can happen, he might be injured, lose form etc and is still a long way behind... so yeah... its possible he might not make it.

Please check his six hitting rate in last 2 years. He is on an insane level that no other international player has been on.

    The juggernaut continues.......

    214th Six
    13.3
Santner to Rohit, SIX, lovely, nicely tossed up outside off, Rohit comes down the track, gets underneath the length and swings it high and over long-off for a maximum

    215th Six
    23.4
Lockie Ferguson to Rohit, SIX, oh yes! Thank you for coming. Shot of the day. 143kph short of length delivery and Rohit has picked the bones out of that one,

Most sixes for India in ODIs:
    215 ROHIT SHARMA

    215 MS Dhoni
    195 S Tendulkar
    189 S Ganguly
    153 Yuvraj Singh

Surely he would if he maintains his fitness and doesn’t go Sehwag’s way fitness wise. Still he is carries a slightly bulging tummy.

He is indeed a treat to watch and a very fine Basman indeed.

Haven't seen him hit those long sixes this year. He still manages to hit sixes but he has ability to hit really huge ones. I expect him to play one great knock in next 2 matches under his own captaincy. Hopefully will get first hundred or 200 in NZ.

Sixes have nothing to do with tummy if you're a pro athelete. Slim build is necessary for running, not generating power.

Rohit's longevity is not guaranteed. He is not the fittest player around and in couple of years , with slightest slowing down of his reflexes, he will lose that six hitting capability , particularly his wonder pull and hook shots. Just like Sehwag.

This is a silly record, but given Rohit's six-hitting per game in the last 2 years, he can get there.

Besides Rohit Sharma is about 20 times the batsman Afridi ever was.

I don't see Pandya playing long enough for India to be able to break that record tbh.

Very difficult for a lower-order batsman. Afridi himself would not have got there had he not opened for many years. Rohit has the best chance by far.

Simply because he's a pace-bowling all-rounder bowling at 135-140k and that asks a lot from your body. Over time I think he'll become less effective with both bat and ball and at that time he might not even find a place in the team unless he adjusts accordingly.

    Phenomenal six hitter.

Seems to particularly like hitting triplets. How many occasions has he already hit triple sixes. Incredible.
