Australia [231] beat South Africa [224/9] by 7 runs in the 2nd ODI to level the series at 1-1

Excellent start by Steyn in his first 3 overs. Pace upto 144 kph and generating some outswing on a flat track.

Series saver for AUS & probably they are happy to be put in rather than chasing.

It's a good batting wicket but RSA bowlers are bowling well. No respite for Australia

Still, AUS would like to defend a total rather than chase against Tahir, Also, Aussies have lost like last 6 or 7 games against SAF, at one point they’ll win - may be today is the lucky day from the way Finch is still there as it looks.

Well. He's out now. They desperately need Smith and Warner back at the World Cup. Otherwise they won't even make semifinals.

They’ll come back just in time for WC.

I am really impressed with CA in this regard, truly a matured board with clear vision. At the moment the type of result team AUS is giving, I am sure any south Asian board, by now would have called back Cameron White, Cullum Ferguson, Bailey ... may be even Watson or MoJo could have been asked to “unretire” and be Captain.

But, Aussies are using these few months to find their depth. Barring injury, 6 spots are fixed -

    Warner
    Finch
    Smith
    Open
    Open
    Open
    Open (WK)
    Cummins
    Strac
    Josh
    Open (spinner)
    ———————

They have brought Lyon back in LO set up for that spinners spot while trying few young players in both LO formats in different spots - Short, Lynn, Mitch, Shaun (not young but still has a 40/80 sort of stats in ODI), McDermott, Stoinis, Khawaja,..,.. Labuschagne, while one of Bancroft or Carey will keep the wicket.

AUS is my dark horse - won’t be surprised to see them as one of the finalists. These bilateral games are just an extended net session for them - I doubt ever any players fate has been decided by couple of such games. Rather, they judge players from domestics and test their combination in these games - if someone fails, it’s not like the selection was wrong, rather the player selected wasn’t fit for the role.

Australian batting is bad but not this bad. Very apparent they have been deeply unsettled by the controversies dogging their team. Crippled mentally and not able to overcome it.

Currently Australians have some a lot of problems in the batting department but their two big issue are:
    1. The wk batsman: they don’t have any wk batsman who can bat in the top 6.
    2. Stoinis isn’t a good enough all rounder. For this, they have Mitch Marsh who is a good ODI batsman.

Their batting is virtually non existent lol. If you can allow a trundler like Pretorius to end up with such figures on this wicket then Australia have serious problems. Never have I seen an Australian ODI batting lineup so limited and weak. Aaron finch is probably their batsman right now and that speaks volumes about the state of their batting.

I agree. That's why I'm not predicting Australia demise. Once Smith and Warner are back , the team will look stronger.

Fastest opening spell that Starc has ever bowled according to Gilchrist.

Last 21 games, 2 won, 2 no result, 17 losses. Basically after PAK tour of Australia they have been getting smashed by everyone.

Nice close match and low scoring too. Better than the glut of 300 + scores we've had in recent times.
