Australia [158/4] beat India [169/7] by 4 runs (DLS method) in the 1st T20I to take 1-0 series lead

India begin their long tour of Australia with the first Twenty20 International, the format in which they have won four of six games they have played in Australia to date.

    Overview

    Australia v India
    1st T20I
    Brisbane Cricket Ground, Woolloongabba, Brisbane
    Wednesday, 21 November 2018; 19:00 local, 09:00 GMT

One of the two final frontiers for India in terms of Test cricket, Australia has been a happy hunting ground for the them in the shortest format of the game in recent past they won the last T20I series they played here, sweeping the hosts 3-0 in 2016.

India, who "want to make a mark" this time around in Australia, will look to begin well. As it is, the challenge could be a tough one on the fast and bouncy pitch at the Gabba, which India vice-captain Rohit Sharma considers as the fastest in Australia.

India have enough quality and depth in the side and form too behind them to give Australia a strong challenge in their own backyard.

Sharma has hit two T20I centuries this year, captain Virat Kohli had another record-breaking series against the Windies at home, and newbie Rishabh Pant, in the side in the place of MS Dhoni, warmed up for his first tour of Australia with his maiden T20I half-century against the Windies.

In addition to the three, Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Dinesh Karthik and Krunal Pandya who had a good show with both bat and ball against the Windies in his debut series make a strong batting line-up.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah, the latter returning to where he made his mark as a star-in-the-making, form the potent as ever fast-bowling attack and have the spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal for company. Together, the four make a formidable combination.

Khaleel Ahmed, the find of the Asia Cup 2018 for India, impressed against the Windies at home and Australia could be for him what it was for Bumrah in 2016 a proving ground.

And while a 3-0 series win against the Windies, a 2-1 win against England before that and two more T20I series wins earlier in the year make India red-hot in terms of form, it has been completely opposite for Australia.

Their year began with the honour of completing the highest successful chase in T20I cricket and a victory in the tri-nation T20I series in New Zealand, but that remains the only highlight.

Australia lost to Pakistan in the final of another tri-series also involving the hosts, Zimbabwe, and then went on to lose the three-match T20I series in the United Arab Emirates and the one-off T20I against South Africa at home.

But there have been positives. Aaron Finch, who smashed the highest individual score in T20I cricket earlier in the year when he hit a 76-ball 172 against Zimbabwe, is always a threat at home.

Power-hitters in Chris Lynn, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis give their captain enough support in the batting order. The emergence of Alex Carey as a reliable middle-order wicket-keeper batsman has also helped.

Their bowling will be lead by Andrew Tye and Jason Behrendorff, the latter had a memorable T20I debut series against India last year when he picked up 4/21 to bowl Australia to a victory in Guwahati. Adam Zampa, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Billy Stanlake are also in the mix to add spice and variation.

Australia have all the talent; it's just that they need to get some form on their side, which India are travelling with.

    Key players

Aaron Finch (Australia): The hosts will rely heavily on their captain and will look up to him to give the team a strong start. With an ability to bat through the innings, Finch, with his experience, will be a threat for India.

Rohit Sharma (India): The man with more T20I centuries than any other man and who, by his own admission, cherishes fast and bouncy wickets such as at the Gabba, could be the No.1 target for the hosts. With runs aplenty in his kitty, Sharma will look to finish the year on a high.

    Conditions

It was cloudy and breezy when India arrived at the Gabba for their first practice session. But it is expected to be hot and humid on Wednesday. The traditionally bouncy wicket at the Gabba is expected to test the batsmen from both sides.

    Squads

Australia: Aaron Finch (c), Ashton Agar, Jason Behrendorff, Alex Carey (wk), Nathan Coulter-Nile, Chris Lynn, Glenn Maxwell, Ben McDermott, D'Arcy Short, Billy Stanlake, Marcus Stoinis, Andrew Tye, Adam Zampa

India (starting 12): Virat Kohli (c), Khaleel Ahmed, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shikhar Dhawan, Dinesh Karthik, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Krunal Pandya, Rishabh Pant (wk), Lokesh Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav

    Cricbuzz writes

There's quite a bit of grass left on the pitch. Very surprising for a T20 game. Gabba normally has bounce, so it may not be a case of holding the pitch together. A pacer's paradise it looks like, but bounce also means ball comes on nicely to the bat.

Great to read. Will be great if Aussies continue to produce out and out grassy and bouncy pitches all through the series across formats.

No Kuldeep or Chahal! Playing 4 seamers and Krunal Pandya. A bit strange, wrist spinners on these huge AUssies grounds would have been good to have in the team. Even Aussies have got Zampa.

The quality of commentary leaves a lot to be desired.

But I can't imagine why this practice surprises you. This is the norm nowadays in every sector, not just broadcasting. Business operations are becoming leaner by the year in every industry.

You are conflating two different things. I agree that Uthappa and Dasgupta are boring commentators.

But the practice of sending over the broadcasting team to the host nation is not a norm anymore. Channel 9 don't send their commentators to India during a tour either. It's saves on cost and logistics and that's what most boards/organisations are trying to achieve nowadays.

India has been really poor on the field today. Hopefully it's nothing but just a bit of rust on the first day in a new environment. But they really have to bounce back in the next game. This kind of fielding is unacceptable from India.

Not at all. Your average Indian would struggle to follow an all-Australian commentary team with their accents.

Plus a lot of these Indian commenters like Dasgupta, Chopra, Murli Karthik, etc also double up as Hindi commentators.

So no, common sense dictates exactly how things are right now.

Hardik Pandya is a fine AR. Krunal is a limited bowler but good enough for T20s. Plus he is in the side because we are missing Hardik as the AR. Otherwise Chahal would always play ahead of bowlers like Krunal.

And Khaleel is a very good talent. If you think he is "useless" then I have to think that you don't know much about cricket.

So no, common sense dictates exactly how things are right now.
I am talking about English commentary only, keep these guys for Hindi commentary. Most who would listen to English commentary would rather prefer the fox team to deepdas gupta and Robin uthappa.

And how exactly did you come to this conclusion? I'm assuming you live in a metro city. Do you have any idea what the audience in less developed parts of the country want? Australian accent will be difficult to follow for most middle class Indians. Stop being so miopic.

A fine AR who cannot actually bowl his full quota of 10 overs unless he has had an exceptional day, I think not. He is average batsman who can actually hit from ball 1, he won't get picked ahead of any proper batsman or bowler in this team. I have seen nothing from this good talent to suggest he is nothing but the poor man's version of bhuvneshwar without the excessive swing or ability to be consistent with line and length.

Far from it. He is custom built for t20s and mid lower order for ODIs. One of the few Aussies who can hit out vs spin.

Then I suggest that you should apply for the position of India's bowling coach. Because Zaheer hand-picked Khaleel and you seem to know better than him.

So let losers like Zaheer Khan stick to commentary. And you can take Indian pace bowling forward.

But he also gets out to spin a lot. More so than pace bowling.

Bhai audiences in Mumbai would want commentary in tapori language, does that mean Star or Sony shoul hire tapori commentators ?
This is India Vs Australia not a gully mohalla match. Commentary should be top notch.

Poor logic. Even bowlers like Dinda and Vinay were choosen/mentored by some great at some point of time. Does that make them immune to criticism ?

Hand picked was he so he must be fantastic, because talented players who are also hand picked and lauded don't ever turn out to be useless. I can give you a list of players who were similarly highly rated only to turn out to be duds.

These are ganguly's quotes on dinda in 2012, how dare you question the great man after all what cricket have you played

Criticism? Sure. But what @jagatk is doing is not criticism at all. So what you're saying doesn't apply.

PS: I can't recall Vinay or Dinda ever being hand-picked by any great pacer. Khaleel and Bumrah are the only two pacers who have been literally hand-picked in recent times.

Why don't you list out the pace bowlers we had in 2012.

Dinda wasn't going to replace Bumrah in 2012. He was going to replace the likes of Praveen Kumar and an Ishant Sharma with an avg of 38.

As for Manoj Tiwary, he is a class batsman and everyone knew him as one of the more talented batsmen of his time. Just like Ambati Rayadu. His FC avg of 50+ over a 100 matches proves just that.

I was surprised why India are going with Krunal Pandya as their fifth bowling option when you don't have a sixth option with the bowl. But then thought its T20s, so dont really care much.

Fifth option has to be Hardik Or Jadeja, not Krunal. Jadeja is a better bowler than Krunal and Hardik is a fast bowling all-rounder,so gets the nod.

I would prefer Ponting, etc commentating over Deep Dasgupta.

But that certainly doesn't mean the rest of the country will be comfortable with that choice too. You are taking a leap of faith and it shows me how out of touch you are with the rest of the Indian population.

PS: The Indian panel also includes Michael Clarke and Mike Hussey, btw. It's not all Indians.
